Elle Mills‘ first short film has been picked up by content creator-focused studio/distribution platform Creator+.
Mills—a longtime YouTuber with 1.75 million subscribers—raised almost 24,000 on IndieGoGo to produce Reply, which she describes as “Ferris Bueller + Parent Trap + 13 Going on 30 + Wes Anderson but gay?”
The short film follows 15-year-old Sam (Anthony Rosenthal), who finds a box of tapes documenting his mother Casey’s (Ciara Riley Wilson) last summer at her childhood home—which was also the summer an intriguing new neighbor Hayden (Ava Capri) moved in next door.
“‘Reply‘ was very much a passion project—it’s a love letter to my high school self and the film I wish I had growing up,” Mills said in a statement. “Getting to work with Creator+ to finally release this into the world has been a dream come true experience.”
Per Variety, Reply will debut exclusively on Creator+ Nov. 10. It’ll cost...

When it comes to representing the diversity of the Australian population, both in front of and behind the camera, it is film in particular that continues to be a “problem area”, according to Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason.
Mason spoke last week at the New Zealand Film Commission’s (Nzfc) Power of Inclusion conference in Auckland, on a panel with Nzfc CEO Annabelle Sheehan, National Screen Institute – Canada acting director Joy Loewen and Geena Davis Institute CEO Madeleine di Nonno, looking at country-specific initiatives aimed at broadening representation on and off screen.
Screen Australia’s development-focused Gender Matters initiative has been successful in “flooding the pipeline” with female-led projects, Mason told the conference.

Even if you don’t know who Wengie is, there’s a good chance you’ve probably heard her voice.
The 33-year-old creator, who’s amassed 13.8 million subscribers on YouTube, didn’t plan to showcase her voice when she joined the platform in 2013. And she definitely didn’t plan for YouTube to launch her career.

Until 2010, the pathway to success in the screen industry depended on convincing broadcasters and film producers to give to you airtime or production resources. These days, all you need is an internet connection and a laptop or smartphone.
A new creative industry has been born in the last decade called “social media entertainment”. It’s peopled by young entertainers and activists who you may never have heard of: Hank Green, Casey Neistadt, PewDiePie and Tyler Oakley.
