A slow-motion panic attack in movie form, “The Young Wife” swirls around the hopes and doubts of a young woman (a radiant Kiersey Clemons) on the day of her “non-wedding.” It’s not a moment of matrimony, nor is it quite a commitment ceremony, but instead a day-long party, a celebration of the love between Celestina and her wishy-washy boyfriend River (Leon Bridges), who’s hours late. Set 10 years in the future and imbued with an ineffably otherworldly glow that almost makes you feel like you’ve been planted on another planet, “The Young Wife” is , and one with plenty of spiky characters and admirable visuals to pluck from.

Have you watched "Knives Out" and "Glass Onion" and found yourself in desperate need of more tales of murder from writer/director Rian Johnson? Or perhaps you've binge-watched both seasons of "Russian Doll" and are ready for another show where Natasha Lyonne attempts to solve a mystery with a lackadaisical attitude and some sharp wit. Or maybe you just want to see Adrien Brody, Stephanie Hsu, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ron Perlman, Benjamin Bratt, Chloë Sevigny, Lil Rel Howery, Clea Duvall, Tim Blake Nelson, and a whole clown car of other acclaimed actors all in one place.
If any of the above apply, then "Poker Face" might be the show for you. Created, written, and directed by Johnson, the 10-episode case-of-the-week murder mystery series stars Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a casino hostess turned detective with an uncanny ability to know whether or not someone is telling the truth. It begins, like so many TV shows, with a missing girl poster. In the opening moments of Search Party, restless twenty-something Dory (Alia Shawkat) walks past a sign tacked to a phone mast in her New York neighbourhood, announcing the disappearance of a young woman named Chantal Witherbottom. A flash of recognition prompts Dory to make an about-turn, so she can better contemplate a face she seems to recognise.
So far, so generic crime story – until we cut to a Brooklyn brunch spot, where Dory shares the news with partner Drew (John Reynolds) and their friends Portia (Meredith Hagner) and Elliott (John Early) over mimosas and Bloody Marys. Chantal, it transpires, was on the outskirts of the group’s social circle at college, but Dory’s myopic pals are resolutely uninterested in her vanishing act. “She sucked… she had nothing to offer,” Elliott declares, speaking fluent, scathing hyperbole while tapping out an elegy (“In shock.

Twelve years after the launch of Instagram, it’s hardly news that no one’s life is really as blissful as it looks on their carefully curated feeds. Yet as Becky (Erin Doherty) can attest, it can be difficult to remember that when you’re stuck in a run-down two-bedroom flat on the unfashionable side of Bristol with your ailing mother, poring over snapshots from the much prettier, posher life of someone you used to know.
In fact, it’ll take most of the six hourlong episodes of Chloe for Becky to learn just how messy and troubled the life of her childhood friend Chloe Fairbourne (Poppy Gilbert) really was. But if the series ultimately offers few revelations we haven’t seen before, they’re still ones that ring more or less true, especially with Doherty’s mesmerizing performance at the center.

Sixty-four years late and right on time, Alice Childress’ wise and stirring backstage comedy-drama Trouble in Mind is making its long-in-coming Broadway debut tonight, and to describe the play as prescient would be an understatement. Uncanny rings truer.
With a star turn by Lachanze that takes a strong place in a theatrical season already formidable in its roster of performances, Trouble in Mind takes a behind-the-curtain look at the racism, coded prejudice, self-flattery, sexism and built-in bigotry that Broadway has always professed to eschew.
Childress, who died in 1994, knew better, and her insights fuel Trouble in Mind. First staged to acclaim Off Broadway in 1955, the play, about a Black actress in a big Broadway play who must choose between truth and security, was optioned by producers to open on Broadway in 1957 – if only Childress would write a more upbeat and forgiving ending. She chose truth.

Cameras have officially started rolling on Hulu’s How I Met Your Father — and we have an intriguing first look, courtesy of series co-creator Isaac Aptaker.
Aptaker on Tuesday commemorated Day 1 with a photo from the set, which shows series leads Hilary Duff (Younger) and Chris Lowell (Glow) at a bar that looks nothing like MacLaren’s. Brightly lit, with seating that better resembles Friends‘ Central Perk than How I Met Your Mother‘s central watering hole, this is not the same Upper West Side pub once frequented by Ted, Barney, Robin, Marshall and Lily. It’s an entirely new hangout.

Amazon Studios has announced that it will co-produce BBC psychological thriller Chloe, and the six-part series has set a cast that includes The Crown star Erin Doherty.
Produced by Mam Tor Productions, run by former Cuba Pictures cofounder Tally Garner, Chloe was originally announced by the BBC in February 2020 and is created and written by Sex Education director Alice Seabright.
It centers on the character of Becky, who becomes obsessed with the death of her estranged friend Chloe. Becky assumes a new identity to infiltrate the enviable lives of Chloe’s closest friends as she attempts to establish what happened.
Through her alter-ego Sasha, Becky becomes a powerful, transgressive heroine; a popular, well-connected “someone” with a life, and loves, that are far more exciting and addictive than the “no one” she is as Becky. However, the pretense soon obscures and conflates reality, and Becky risks losing herself completely.

“The Surrogate” is the kind of movie you’d expect to be based on a stage play, because it is so entirely driven by well-honed dialogue arguing social issues from nicely detailed if schematically conceived character viewpoints — like something by Donald Margulies, Rebecca Gilman or the pseudononymous Jane Martin. That writer-director Jeremy Hersh’s debut feature is a screen original surprises, not because it’s “stagy” (though he has written plays), but because .

CBS this morning renewed 18 shows for a total of 23 scripted/reality series and newsmagazines picked up for next season. Left off the list were freshmen Tommy, Carol’s Second Act and Broke and comedy Man with a Plan, now in its fourth season. The development is not surprising: All four had been on shaky ground and now have been canceled.
As Deadline has reported, the grounding of all broadcast pilots was expected to benefit bubble series as networks are considered more likely to stick with a modest performer that has an established following than to take a chance on a pilot that has not been filmed and tested.
Indeed, CBS has renewed nearly all of its established series, with Matt LeBlanc starrer Man with a Plan as the only returning CBS show not to make the cut for renewal this year. The family sitcom has been a reliable utility player...

God Friended Me has been canceled by CBS.
It's sad, but it's true.
The two-hour series finale is slated to air Sunday, April 26, and we're not prepared to say goodbye.
The official trailer teases some high-stakes moments that would make many people believe this is a planned conclusion.
Given the way the cast has reacted to the news, it certainly seems like these final two episodes were constructed to set up a potential third season.
What we can tell from the clip is that Cory allowed the God Account to be destroyed thanks to the virus, meaning that the gang has just one friend suggestion remaining.
On a show filled with happy moments, it's hard to imagine the account not being restored in some capacity.
Then again, a wild development could have been planned to shake the show up for a potential third season.
