Atul Sabharwal‘s third feature film, Berlin, is an espionage thriller set during the times when India, under the leadership of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, was striving to establish a strong geopolitical relation with Russia. The Cold War had just been over, and it was time for new economic growth for the nation. With that changed scenario, the modus operandi of the intelligence departments also changed. The film is forthrightly cerebral and minimalist, and offers a stark and sharp presentation of mystery and tension. The tale largely unfolds in claustrophobic locations where civilians are at pains to constantly wonder. This proves to heighten the mood of the spy game, as it throws the viewer into the deceptive rituals of bureaucratic politics, where intelligence agencies walk a delicate tightrope between managing failures, honeytraps, and denial.

There is no dearth of films in the spy genre coming out of the Hindi film industry. Many stories are over the top, while only some of them manage to be subtle and focus on the nuances and the nitty-gritties of how intelligence agencies and bureaus work. As mentioned in our review of Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack, not many films have explored the subject of the constant tiff between the R&aw and Intelligence Bureau. Berlin, directed by Atul Sabharwal, is all about an interrogation that involves a mute man and sign language expert brought together to solve a puzzle. Berlin will be on Zee5 Global from September 13, 2024, and stars Aparshakti Khurana, Ishwak Singh, and Rahul Bose in the titular roles.
The movie is set in 1993 when Pushkin Varma, a sign language expert teaching at school for speaking and hearing disabilities, is hired by the bureau to carry out...

Zee 5’s new spy thriller, Berlin, by Atul Sabharwal, revolves around Pushkin, an ordinary teacher who must interrogate Ashok Kumar, who is suspected of being an Isi spy involved in a plot to assassinate the Russian president. What’s Ashok’s real motive, and who else is in on this conspiracy? Let’s dive into the cast and characters to find it out.
Spoilers Ahead
Pushkin Verma
We all know how talented Aparshakti Khurana is after his brilliant performances in Stree and Jubilee, and his performance as Pushkin Verma in Berlin really shows promise. Pushkin, like you and me, is just an ordinary man—a government teacher at a deaf and mute institution who had no idea he’d get caught up in something so dark and dangerous when he was asked to work with the Intelligence Bureau to interrogate Ashok, the so-called deaf and mute “spy.” At first,...

Berlin, directed by Atul Sabharwal, is probably one of the best spy thrillers that I have seen in a long time. The screenplay is beautifully written, and it is a treat to watch the mystery unravel slowly. The performances, especially by Rahul Bose, Ishwak Singh, and Aparshakti Khurana, elevate the experience of watching Berlin even more. We are made privy to complex characters that keep you hooked throughout the run-time of the film. We were introduced to a teacher who believed in principles like justice, equality, and honesty; a disabled individual who never got an opportunity that he rightfully deserved but wanted to prove his potential; and a practical man, a high-ranking officer in the intelligence agency, who was a part of the corrupt system and knew very well how the real world functioned. So, let’s find out what happened in Berlin and how the paths of these individuals crossed each other’s.

Actor Ishwak Singh, who is known for his work ‘Rocket Boys’, ‘Paatal Lok’, and ‘Aligarh’, has shared that his upcoming film ‘Berlin’ pays homage to the Delhi of the early 1990s.
‘Berlin’, directed by Atul Sabharwal, follows the story of a deaf-mute man who becomes embroiled in espionage accusations. As the authorities intensify their pursuit, a proficient sign language interpreter emerges, entrusted with untangling the truth on behalf of a government operative.
The film, which delves into the themes of deception, betrayal, and redemption, received huge acclaim at the Habitat International Film Festival in Delhi.
Talking about the film, Ishwak said, “Berlin is a deeply rooted and authentic film. Aside from the plot and the character arcs, the film’s strength lies in its strong cultural, political, and social references beautifully ingrained in the narrative. Tumse Na Ho Pyega (streaming on Disney+Hotstar)
Starring Ishwak Singh, Mahima Makwana, Gaurav Pandey, Gurpreet Saini , Karan Jotwani
Directed by Abhishek Sinha
It is sad and annoying to see so many talented people coming up with a film so dull and unfunny it gives a bad reputation to past bromances like Dil Chahta Hai and Sholay.
Forget Jai and Veeru, the three friends in Tumse Na Ho Payega (a suitable title indeed) don’t even look like long-standing friends. They seem more three unlikely people thrown together on the same table at a boring party by fluke. They are played by actors who want us to know that they know how to act. Every word they utter is punctuated and eye-rolling.
The main protagonist Gaurav (Ishwak Singh) speaks directly to us the audience, like Wamiqa Gabbi in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Charlie Chopra who keeps looking into the camera and talking,...

‘Tumse Na Ho Payega’ (2023) Review: Misses Its Mark Due To A Lukewarm Approach To An Inspiring Story
Every good movie is infused with a unique spirit that is very hard to miss. If it’s there, one senses it. It’s in the rhythm and pacing of every shot in every scene. It cannot be confused with sentimentality flooding the screen. Tumse Na Ho Payega is another lifeless film from writers Nikhil Mehrotra and Nitesh Tiwari. The duo had worked as writers in the latter’s directorial venture Bawaal, which was so stilted in its metaphors that it became preposterous. This one, directed by Abhishek Sinha, is perhaps less jarring, but it’s a bit of a straight story. It would be more accurate to say that the complex story, which is inspired by Varul Agarwal’s book How I Braved Anu Aunty and Co-Founded A Million Dollar Company, is made into a dull one by the writers. Varun Agarwal is an entrepreneur whose story has inspired...

Mumbai, Sept 1 (Ians) Actor Jim Sarbh, whose captivating performance as Adil Khanna in the web-series ‘Made in Heaven’ season 2 has left his fans enthralled, feels that the more prepared an actor is, the more spontaneous and fluid they can be on set in terms of their performance.
At a recent event in Mumbai, Jim has shed light on his unique approach to acting. He said: “I don’t think it is easy. Like any other job, preparation is key, and without it you haven’t got anything. The better prepared you are, the more spontaneous you can be on set.”

Foreword
Web series on streaming platforms have warranted a far more emotional investment both for actors in the cast and from the viewers who would try and get involved in the characters. Their sequels, however, are rarely as engrossing as the original first season of episodic developments. And for the same reason, I, for one, am a tad sceptical about watching successive seasons with as much enthusiasm as I am for the preceding ones. Unless it is ‘Made In Heaven’.
Made in Heaven Season 2
This series is a compelling watch and though there isn’t anything spectacularly novel about its storyline, the production values, immaculate writing and superb acting by the entire cast makes it riveting. It represents what present-day India is all about. Conservative on the one hand and modern in many ways with progressive mindsets of traditional people who face conflicting ideas to deal with at every step.

Made In Heaven , Season 2(Prime Video, 7 Episodes)
Four years after Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti whipped up a foamy but powerful series on two wedding planners, one on the verge of a divorce, the other happily gay. The entire cast of emotionally compromised characters is back, this time doing nothing that we haven’t already seen them doing.
First, the comfort of the familiar. Adil Khanna is still cheating on his wife, Jaspreet ‘Jazz’ Kaur is still stealing fucks from a ground level worker. Tara Khanna is still grey. And yes, Arjun Mathur is still gay.
So how to spice up the status quo?
The new characters are interesting only if you examine their underbelly to see how stylishly they break the rules. Trinetra Haldar, a real-life trans-gender joins the cast as Meher, who we are led to believe, was a part of the Made-in-Heavan (wouldn’t Made-in-Havan be more germane to the theme?...
