The Amazon series based on Catherine Ryan Howard’s bestselling novel “56 Days” has added four new cast members, Variety has learned exclusively.
Kingston Rumi Southwick, Ella Victoria, Megan Peta Hill, and Alfredo Narciso have all joined the series, which is now titled “Obsession.” Exact character details are being kept under wraps, but Hill and Narciso will appear in recurring guest star roles while Victoria and Southwick will be guest stars.
They will appear alongside previously announced main cast members Dove Cameron, Avan Jogia, Dorian Missick, and Karla Souza. Recurring guest stars include Kira Guloien, Celeste Oliva, Jesse James Keitel, Matt Murray, and Patch Darragh.
The official description for “Obession” states that it “follows Oliver (Jogia) and Ciara (Cameron), who, after meeting randomly in a supermarket, fall for each other fast, and dangerously hard. Fifty-six days later, homicide investigators arrive at Oliver’s apartment to find an unidentified body—brutally murdered and intentionally decomposed.

You can currently catch Gina Gershon in the action comedy film Borderlands. But before she took on that project, she had starred in the 2023 slasher Thanksgiving, which ended up being a box office hit. Now, she's set to star in a new horror movie titled The Designer, so it doesn't look like she is quite done with the horror world just yet.
The Designer is being described as a body horror flick. It comes from American filmmaker Em Johnson, who is writing the script and will also be directing. Johnson is best known for writing and directing the drama film Balloon Animal. Incandescent Entertainment, First Bloom Films, and Hemlock Circle Productions are the production companies behind the new horror film, with Jiarui Guo, Warner Davis, and Katherine Waddell serving as producers.

This is Day 130 of the WGA strike and Day 57 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
There was fan convention energy on the picket line outside Paramount offices in Manhattan on Friday as more than 100 people marched in a Star Trek-themed rally put on by the Writers Guild of America East.
The first of two “United We Trek!” pickets in New York and Los Angeles drew a show runner and actors from spinoffs of the original Paramount-owned franchise, a Star Trek novelist, and a contingent of Trekkies marching in Starfleet garb.
On another hot morning in the late-summer heat sink of Times Square, picketers incorporated Star Trek catchphrases into chanted refrains such as “Live long and prosper/We want their offer” and “Paramount, let’s engage/We want a fair wage.”

Classic "Star Trek" episode "The Amok Time" delved the most into Vulcan culture of any of the series' 79 installments. In the episode, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) had to return home to wed T'Pring (Arlene Martel), his betrothed since they were both age seven.
T'Pring isn't an especially sympathetic character in "The Amok Time." The implication is that since Spock had been away from Vulcan for so long, she never really knew him. She doesn't want to be "the consort of a legend" and her heart belongs to another — Stonn (Lawrence Montaigne). So, she connives to undo her wedding to Spock. First, she rejects him, forcing him into a challenge for her hand. Then, she selects Captain Kirk (William Shatner) as her champion in a duel to the death. She knows that no matter the outcome, both men will reject her, Kirk out of disinterest and Spock out of grief, so the...

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is, unlike the bulk of modern scripted television, presented in an episodic format. Like classic "Star Trek," each episode concludes at the end of the hour, presenting -- if done well -- a miniature morality play of the week. "Strange New Worlds" dares to dabble in that most taboo of modern storytelling tropes: the status quo. Trek has, if this author may opine briefly, gained the most amount of dramatic traction by depicting resolute, intelligent characters going about their daily routine. Seeing a team of Starfleet officers in constant crisis mode, moving throughout a larger story, robs them of their chance to impress audiences with their everyday skillsets.
The episodic nature of the show also permits guest stars to make more of an impact. When an antagonist arrives in a larger story arc, they must either be contemplated beyond the point of being interesting (in a "what's the villain's backstory?...

That makes him human, Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) told him, and after their hug, it certainly looked like they could kiss. Here, Bush discusses the latest episode, Chapel and Spock’s complicated dynamic, and what’s ahead for her in Season 2. Growing up in Britain, it was hard to avoid the cultural significance that swept the nation with the release of Russell T Davies’ Queer as Folk. It was a revolutionary series, and one still held in high-esteem today. But it is over 20 years old, and the landscape changes, society changes, and the community changes with it – and so Stephen Dunn has brought it, emphatically, into the modern world, with a reboot launching on Starzplay this week.
To mark the occasion we had the pleasure of speaking to a collection of some of its leading stars, such as Ryan O’Connell & Fin Argus, as well as CG & Jesse James Keitel, and then of course the writer himself, Stephen Dunn. We discuss their relationship with the original series, and how a community can rebuild itself, with a plot-line in this series taking inspiration from the tragic mass shooting in Orlando in 2016. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “Bleep,” the sixth episode of “Queer as Folk,” now streaming on Peacock.
The first two shows that bared the name “Queer as Folk” presented a fairly narrow view of what “queer” is. While Russell T. Davies’ 1999 British original and its first American remake on Showtime were groundbreaking at the time for their depiction of LGBTQ people as the leads of their own stories, the shows overwhelmingly centered the experiences of white cisgender gay men. The newly launched Peacock reimagining of the series, which was developed by Stephen Dunn, presents a far more diverse and varied depiction of queer life, exploring characters in an interrelated group of queer friends living in New Orleans.
“What ‘Queer as Folk’ meant in 1999 and 2000, that’s actually what we’re trying to reboot,” Jaclyn Moore, who serves as co-showrunner with Dunn, tells Variety. “What is the modern version of that?...

This article contains light spoilers for Peacock’s Queer as Folk.
The original British version of Queer as Folk broke a tremendous amount of new ground for LGBTQ+ storytelling in the late 1990’s. Telling the story of three wildly different gay men, creator Russell T. Davies was able to give a greater voice to broader experience of being queer in the Western world.
Straight people often have certain ideas in their head of how gay people act and what they desire. The characters in Davies’ show take those tropes and try to flip them upside down, filling in the missing stripes of the rainbow between simply going to nightclubs and hooking up with strangers you’ve found online. And while those things are a culturally significant part of being queer, they are not the entire picture.

Last week, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" introduced one of the series' most entertaining new characters to date: Captain Angel (Jesse James Keitel), the roguish and theatrical leader of a pirate ship called The Serene Squall. Angel ingratiated themselves to Spock (Ethan Peck) under the alias of Dr. Aspen, but in reality, the charismatic criminal only wanted to free their husband from prison.

Brodie makes an explosive mark in Queer as Folk Episode 3 — literally. In this clip from the episode, Brodie (Devin Way) avenges a friend and Bussey (Armand Fields), the reigning drag queen and matriarch of the New Orleans queer scene, performs a powerful drag number to “House of The Rising Sun.” The performance comes at a pivotal moment of healing for the community following the shooting at the Babylon nightclub in the premiere. In Episode 3, “Welcome to the Hellmouth,” the community attends a memorial for the victims where their families are gifted with new cars. Brodie and Ruthie (Jesse James Keitel) attend in honor of their friend, Daddius (Chris Renfro), who was killed in the tragic event. They sit in the audience in horror as Daddius’ parents — who wouldn’t claim their son’s body after his death — arrive on stage. Later on, before Brodie arrives at Bussey’s show, he...

But, from the perspective of the “prime” Star Trek timeline, this is actually the “first” time this character has come back into Spock’s life. Here’s what this twist means, and how it fits into the chronology of the classic Star Trek series and, most importantly, the feature films of the 1980s.
Who is Sybok?
In “The Serene Squall,” the character of Dr. Aspen (Jesse James Keitel) is eventually revealed to have a dual identity. They’re not really Dr. Aspen, but instead, a ruthless pirate captain called Angel. However, Aspen is not...

Until now, this newest addition to the Trek verse has been lauded for its return to the episodic format of the series that came before Star Trek: Discovery's 2017 premiere, and, to be frank, it has been quite a fun ride.
However, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 7 seeds the possibility of a long-arc and a Big Bad by (re-)introducing Spock's full-Vulcan half-brother, Sybok.
His appearance in the final moments is a powerful stinger scene possibly designed to propel the show into a climactic final trio of adventures as we race to the finale of this inaugural season.
But before we really dig into the potential of a Spock-Sybok showdown, let's talk Space Pirates.
I assume Angel left orders to keep her existence a secret from the Enterprise crew brought aboard the Serene Squall. That both Remy and Fran continue to obey those orders even as bonds of...

The new Peacock drama “Queer As Folk” opens with a video of naked men dancing in front of a psychedelic backdrop. As it loops, the camera pans out to reveal the TV screen its playing on and show the main lead of the series, Brodie (Devin Way), in the middle of a particularly messy hook-up.
For many viewers, the video might ring some bells to them — it’s similar to the opening sequence of the original U.S. version of “Queer as Folk,” which aired from 2000 to 2005 on Showtime. For Stephen Dunn, the co-showrunner (with Jaclyn Moore) of Peacock’s reimagining of the series, it was one of his first exposures to the queer community, and he wanted the opening to pay homage to it, before introducing them to one that’s completely new.
“There’s definitely a tongue-in-cheek energy with that opening scene,” Dunn tells Variety.

In Peacock’s new Queer as Folk, Jesse James Keitel stars as Ruthie, a trans woman and onetime party girl trying — and sometimes failing — to mature. The 28-year-old actress (a queer trans woman) made history in 2020 when she won the role of private investigator and aspiring singer Jerrie Kennedy on ABC’s Big Sky, which just concluded its second season in May. Her casting on Big Sky marked the first time a nonbinary actor (at the time, Keitel identified as nonbinary) played a nonbinary series regular on primetime TV.
Keitel says it’s now “a dream come true” to be a part of the rich Queer as Folk legacy. “The previous two iterations changed the TV landscape for queer stories,” Keitel says. “As an audience, we expect more from television today than we did 20 years ago. The issues queer people are facing in...

The very first thing one sees in each episode of the new reboot of “Queer as Folk” — before the action even starts — is the handwritten name of the streamer on which it appears, with an underline jauntily appearing beneath the last four letters of “Peacock.” It’s an elbow to the ribs, or to regions further south, that comes on strong from the earliest moments of the series; do you get it? Do you?
This show, about the lives of queer and trans people in New Orleans, centers that one syllable, and a few similar terms: Like the early-2000s Showtime series that preceded it (itself based on a British drama by Russell T. "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is continuing its so-far successful quest to be the most exciting modern Trek show around. The prequel series has just cast Jesse James Keitel in a guest-starring role as a non-binary character, according to Variety.
Keitel is a trans non-binary actor who will be playing the role of non-binary humanitarian aid worker Dr. Aspen, per the outlet. Dr. Aspen apparently used to be a counselor for Starfleet but was moved to change careers after witnessing the realities of the Federation border. The actor will appear in next week's episode of "Star Trek: Strange...

“Queer as Folk” and “Big Sky” star Jesse James Keitel is boarding “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” for a guest star role as a nonbinary character.
Keitel, who is a trans woman, will appear on the June 16 episode of the show’s first season, currently streaming on Paramount+. Keitel will play Dr. Aspen, who once worked as a Starfleet counselor, but whose experiences on the Federation border prompted them to shift careers and work as a humanitarian aid worker. During the episode, which was directed by trans filmmaker Sydney Freeland (“Reservation Dogs”), Dr. Aspen will develop a surprising connection with Spock (Ethan Peck).
Casting Keitel as Dr. Aspen continues recent efforts to expand LGBTQ representation on “Star Trek.” When “Star Trek: Discovery” launched in 2017, the series included the franchise’s first same-sex couple in Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz). In 2020, “Discovery” introduced Blu Del Barrio...

Stephen Dunn’s “re-imagining” of the groundbreaking British series “Queer as Folk” will premiere on Thursday, June 9, Peacock announced on Wednesday, along with a release of first-look photos and detailed descriptions of the cast and guest stars.
The new series explores a diverse group of friends in New Orleans whose lives are transformed in the aftermath of a tragedy.
Dunn, who serves as creator, executive producer, writer, and director, described how much the original British series from Russell T. It was the first time I really felt seen. The show offered a new paradigm — one where we could accept and celebrate queer love, families, and communities on a global stage. It was truly iconic. I am honored that Russell T.
