Stars: Blu Hunt, Ben Smith-Petersen, John Karna, Katherine Hughes | Written by Elric Kane, Webb Wilcoxen | Directed by Elric Kane
Directed by Elric Kane and co-written by Webb Wilcoxen, The Dead Thing is an erotic thriller with a supernatural twist. By turns haunting, chilling and achingly melancholy, it’s also a compelling drama about digital dating and modern-day malaise.
Set in present-day Los Angeles, the film stars Blu Hunt as Alex, a bored twenty-something working a dead-end office job as a “scanner bitch” and spending her nights with a series of one-night stands she meets through a dating app called Friktion. Meanwhile, there’s increasing tension between her and her best friend Cara (Katherine Hughes), whose flat she has been “temporarily” sharing for more than two years and who is currently recovering from a recently called-off wedding.

Light-touch genre maybe isn’t as celebrated as it should be – human dramas that gently fold in elements of the sublime and surreal to make a louder and more exciting impact. They’re often not quite sexy or crowd-pleasing enough for horror fans, and a bit too aggressive for everyone else. Rarely does anyone manage to walk the ever-thinning tightrope between the two worlds, so to say that director Elric Kane’s engrossing relationship chiller The Dead Thing does is to not just call it impressive, but a full-on marvel.
An achingly millennial ghost story, set amongst the constant conveyor belt of swipe-right dating apps, Kane’s indie is a truly accomplished look at the hunt for human connection in an impersonal world. 20-something artist Alex (a likably messy Blu Hunt) barely exists, working nights in a menial job while slinking from casual hookup to casual hookup. It’s only...

It's tough out there for a single gal. Alex (Blu Hunt) is a woman caught in the throes of malaise, accompanied by a desperate wish to find something worth caring about. Her daily grind is uninspiring, her home life with her sister is fraught, and dating? An absolute nightmare. She spends night after night swiping though Friktion (a hookup app) looking for her next fling. She swipes, they meet, they screw, they leave. Lather, rinse, repeat. It’s a stultifying pattern to which she seems resigned, that is until she stumbles across Kyle (Ben Smith-Petersen). A lively, handsome guy who can actually carry a conversation and is interested in more than just a few furtive minutes of humping, Kyle seems like a dream. However, when he...

The Dead Thing
There are love stories and then there are stories about love, and the two do not always overlap. Elric Kane’s The Dead Thing is one of the latter – which isn’t to say that it’s mot beautiful or that there are not times when, watching it, you will be desperately hoping that it’s troubled central characters can make their relationship work. That’s Alex (Blu Hunt) and Kyle (Ben Smith-Petersen). Their connection is intense, but she’s been struggling in many areas of her life and he has a secret so dark that it threatens to overwhelm them both. It all begins with a date arranged over a phone app. When I meet Elric at the 2024 Fantasia International Film Festival, where it’s screening, I note that I’ve recently been discussing phone dating with Miguel Llansó, and that we were reflecting on how...

How does one form a meaningful relationship in the modern world? And once you do, how do you keep that relationship from dying, or turning into something else entirely? The Dead Thing is a supernatural story set in the modern online dating scene. It is an examination of how we make (or fail to make) connections in a technology-fueled world, and what can happen when those connections become too intense. This film comes from Elric Kane and is his first feature as a solo director.
Co-written with Webb Wilcoxen, The Dead Thing opens on Alex (Blu Hunt), a lonely woman trapped in the internet dating scene of LA. She splits her time between a colorless job as a document scanner and swiping through her dating app. She regularly goes out with men, hoping that one of them will be the right match. But none of the men that she meets are terribly interesting.

There’s horror to be found in LA’s dating scene, at least according to the first solo fiction feature film from director Elric Kane. Working from a script he co-wrote with Webb Wilcoxen, Kane’s The Dead Thing is a moody, atmospheric look at the toxicity of finding someone in the city of angels.
Alex (Blu Hunt of The New Mutants) is a twenty-something single who is stuck in a perpetual dating rut. She’s active on Friktion, a dating app, and the opening of the film finds her in a cycle of generic looking men: first on the app, then at the bar, and finally in bed. For Alex, this is repetitive, it’s unexciting, and it’s transactional.
It’s also notable that the only sound is dialogue from men and/or the score by Michael Krassner and Robin Vining. Alex herself doesn’t speak until nearly nine minutes into the film,...

Amid the heartache of saying goodbye to her mother, Lisa Marie Presley, in January, Riley Keough and her husband, Ben Smith-Petersen, revealed that they have a daughter. Smith-Petersen first shared the news while reading a speech his wife wrote in tribute to her mother during Lisa Marie's Jan. 22 memorial service in Graceland.
"I hope I can love my daughter the way you loved me, the way you loved my brother and my sisters. Thank you for giving me strength, my heart, my empathy, my courage, my sense of humor, my manners, my temper, my wildness, my tenacity. I'm a product of your heart, my sisters are a product of your heart, my brother is a product of your heart," Smith-Petersen read for Keough, who sat in the front row, per People.

Riley Keough is moving on and stepping out following the recent public buzz surrounding her late mother, Lisa Marie Presley’s, trust. On Saturday, the “Daisy Jones & The Six” actress attended the Dior Cruise show in Mexico City, Mexico.
For the occasion, Riley looked chic in a sheer white dress as she posed for pictures during the photo call. The actress was not joined by her husband, Ben Smith-Petersen, at the event.
Riley’s appearance came days after Et confirmed that a settlement had been reached between her, her grandmother, Priscilla Presley, and the father of her 14-year-old twin sisters, Michael Lockwood.

Riley Keough saluted the late Lisa Marie Presley today via Instagram on the first Mother’s Day holiday without her.
“Lucky to have had the best and most deeply loving mama I could have asked for,” Keough said on Instagram. It featured a photo of her mother and father, Danny Keough, holding her as an infant.
Keough, the star of “Daisy Jones and the Six,” was Lisa Marie’s oldest child from her relationship with Danny.
Expressing her sorrow over her mother’s death has been difficult for Keough. She had her husband, Ben Smith-Petersen, read her eulogy at the funeral.
The social media post comes as relations are strained between Keough and Priscilla Presley, her grandmother. Priscilla Presley is contesting Lisa Marie’s will, which removed her mother as a trustee.
The 2016 amendment named Riley as the trust controller of Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion and 15% ownership of the singer’s estate.

I have all the details from inside the event, which as usual attracted the most elite of the Hollywood set who poured in after watching Everything Everywhere All at Once score seven Oscar trophies including Best Picture.

Riley Keough turned up in Hollywood on Thursday night to attend the world premiere of her new Prime Video TV series, Daisy Jones & the Six, marking her first red carpet appearance since the sudden death of her mother, Lisa Marie Presley, on Jan. 12. It was quite the scene, too, as the Tcl Chinese Theatre was packed with guests dressed to match the ’70s glam dress code while Keough and her co-stars were supported by a producing team that included Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon.
Keough, wearing Schiaparelli Couture and accompanied by husband Ben Smith-Petersen, toplines the series as Daisy Jones, the co-lead singer of a ’70s rock band. Based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones & the Six details the rise and precipitous fall of that band, from early days toiling away at small gigs through a meteoric rise that culminates in a sold-out show at Chicago’s Soldier Field.
