Stars: Susan Gayle-Watts, Ranen Navat, Aj Bowen, Sean O’Bryan, Emily Goss, Rebekah Kennedy | Written and Directed by Pierre Tsigaridis
From the off, Pierre Tsigaridis’ sophomore film, Traumatika, promises its audience an exploration of the various sub-types of childhood trauma, focusing on emotional, physical, and sexual abuse alongside a gratuitous amount of violence.
The story is told non-linearly, starting in present-day L.A. We are introduced to Jennifer Novac’s (Susan Gayle-Watts) highly exploitative – verging on evil – true crime show intent on exploring a spate of child murders that occurred in 2003 in Pasadena, California. But, before we get there, the audience is transported back further in time to the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, when a lone wanderer buries a mysterious artefact only to then commit suicide after being plagued by visions of his child’s death at the hands of the demon Volpaazu.
93 years later, and we shift to a young Mikey’s (Ranen Navat) bedroom.

The Nowhere Inn: "From real-life friends Annie Clark (a.k.a. Grammy award-winning recording and touring artist St. Vincent) and Carrie Brownstein comes the metafictional account of two creative forces banding together to make a documentary about St. Vincent’s music, touring life, and on-stage persona. But they quickly discover unpredictable forces lurking within the subject and filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project, and the duo’s creative lives. From first-time filmmaker Bill Benz comes a densely woven, laugh-out-loud funny and increasingly fractured commentary on reality, identity, and authenticity. A story of two close friends who attempt to wrestle the truth out of a complex subject before the hall of mirrors that is their artistic lives devours them completely."

Scarehouse Celebrates 20 Years of Fears: "There’s no need to fear … actually, come to think of it, there is – because the legendary haunted attraction ScareHouse, named one of the scariest haunted houses in the United States, will open its doors of doom for its 20th spine-tingling year on Saturday, Sept. 18.
The first visitors to ScareHouse screamed their way through its horrifying haunts and sinister sights and sounds in 1999 – but it’s this year that the attraction is commemorating 20 Years of Fears as a result of a scaled-down, pandemic-influenced version last season.
Tickets to ScareHouse are available beginning today at www.ScareHouse.com. ScareHouse will be open Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 1; and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 6. General admission tickets – which require advance online reservations – begin at $22.95, with a special “Rip Ticket” that offers no-reservation front-of-line access available beginning at $39.95.

With the gore unfolding on Zoom-style calls and home surveillance cameras, the story of online influencers being hunted by a killer is very 2021
Shook opens with a smart satirical visual gag. It reveals the cast of characters, a bunch of female online influencers who pimp out various products, arriving at a swanky event, complete with popping flashbulbs. An edit from another angle shows not all is as it seems, which pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the film: a thriller in the stalk-and-slash tradition but one that keeps pulling the rug out from under the viewer’s expectations.
After the first gory bit of wrong-footing, blonde beauty specialist Mia (Daisye Tutor) emerges as the main protagonist. After she arrives at her family home in the suburbs to watch cute lapdog Chico for her sister Nicole (Emily Goss) for a few days, it gradually becomes clear that Mia...

Influencer culture should be fertile ground for horror. There’s a delicious potential in stoking our schadenfreude as we watch the vapid and the beautiful get bumped off in inventive ways; alternatively, there’s plenty of scope for a deep-dive on the psychology and sociology of Instagram celebs: what makes them tick, what role do we, the viewer, play in their lives, why do we watch, and why do they want us to? All of that stuff. The problem with Shook is that it attempts both approaches and consequently manages neither.
Mia (Daisye Tutor) is a moderately-successful influencer, sharing the glamorous ticks of her life via make-up tips on an unnamed Instagram-style platform. She has slightly less glamorous, less popular influencer friends, and a decidely unglamorous sister, Nicole (Emily Goss) living with the same degenerative genetic disease that recently killed their mother. Mia is back in the family home, passing...

"What do you want?" "I need you to make a choice." Shudder has unveiled the official trailer for a horror thriller titled Shook, yet another new social media horror story. When Mia, a social media star, becomes the target of an online terror campaign, she has to solve a series of games to prevent people she cares about from getting murdered. But is it real. Exclusive: Utah-based distribution company Excel Entertainment has acquired the distribution rights to the faith-based feature, Jane & Emma and released a first-look trailer. The film touches on the Mormon Church’s early history of racially discriminatory practices. Directed by Chantelle Squires, it tells the story of two women, Emma Smith, the wife of Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, and Jane Manning, one of the first black members.
For centuries, people of African descent were shunned from the Church as they were believed to have “the curse of Cain,” who, in the biblical account, was barred from the priesthood after murdering his brother Abel. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the end to that doctrine, which was heavily implemented by Brigham Young, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Early on in “Snapshots,” an elderly matriarch announces to her visiting daughter and granddaughter that two topics of conversation are forbidden for the weekend: “what-ifs and politics.” It’s as sure a sign as any that those themes — identity politics in particular, with the red-blue kind more implied — will proceed to dominate Melanie Mayron’s earnest, gentle-hearted film, an across-the-generations ode to following your heart and living your truth. If that sounds corny, this reflection on an illicit affair between two young married women, and the familial reverberations it has decades later, isn’t shy of stating its case in bluntly homespun terms: One rather wishes Jan Miller Corran and Katherine Cortez’s evidently heartfelt script placed a little more trust in its actors (and audience) to connect the emotional dots.
As it is, “Snapshots” wallows a little too readily in cliché to be quite as stirring as its story...

Seven months pregnant, Jennifer Branagan (Emily Goss) reluctantly returns to her hometown in Kansas after an unexpected mental breakdown. But when strange things start happening in their new rental home, Jennifer begins to fear that it may be haunted. Alone in her convictions, Jennifer is forced to question her sanity as she attempts to find out what, if anything, is plaguing the house.
The House on Pine Street checks all the horror boxes. Creepy people who stare, creepy kids, creepy sounds, pregnant women, insufferable mothers, you know, the usual. In fact, as horror stories go, it pretty much follows the path you would expect it to. But the thing is, it doesn’t really matter.
