The sight of a southern swamp opens the latest feature from writer/director/star Nick McCallum, with the area including gators residing in the water, and a hand visibly poking out of the ground. It belongs to murdered ranch owner Robert Marks, who was last seen boarding a boat with his missing daughter, Sloan. This is conveyed in the intrusive voice-over from ex-cop Isaiah Slade (McCallum), arriving in the small town searching for answers as to Sloan’s whereabouts.

As he converses with the local Chief (Richard Gunn), tries speaking with Robert’s remaining daughter Beth (Mary Drew Ahrens), and forms a bond with aspiring musician Brandy (Anais Lilit), it becomes clear that Slade is personally invested in uncovering the truth.

This is a kind of movie of bygone times which seeks its thriller seeking its own ecosystem.

Find Her has the virtue of knowing how to go back in time in the genre and fulfill its principles from the very start,without attempting to be what it is not and knowing how to go to the sources of dark thrillers and the classics of the Forties of the past century. It is impossible to not recall the kind of film noir hero who is a prey of his own nightmares.

Because beyond creating a captivatingly suspenseful premise with which to build a plot, grain entrapment is a significant enough issue to demand a path towards awareness as much as cinematic entertainment. As the text that appears right before the end credits states: one person has been victim to such incidents approximately every fifteen days since the 1960s. That’s a crazy stat and yet those of us who’ve never set foot on a farm would still be ignorant to it without a piece like this to bring it to our attention. For us the nightmare is an abstract fluke. To those like the characters on-screen, it’s a sobering reality.
