It can feel discordant to see someone mourning amid the pastel-hued bungalows of a beach-bound town, beneath a blue sky. Not that single mom Kristine is grieving exactly in bittersweet, comedic Sundance drama “Suncoast” — a fact Laura Linney’s character makes decidedly clear to a counselor at the hospice center of the title. After all, her son Max (a very still Cree Kawa), who’s dying of brain cancer, isn’t gone yet; he’s just no longer there.
Daughter Doris (Nico Parker), however, is still very present, and she’s bristling under years of Kristine’s not-grieving and Max’s unresolved state. If that sounds harsh, it really isn’t. In her semi-autobiographical directorial debut, Laura Chinn places her sympathies with the child who isn’t ill, at least at the outset. Doris has been conscripted into the kind of caretaking that can tax even the most trained of adults,...

‘They Cloned Tyrone‘ is directed by Juel Taylor and stars John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx.
This comedy blends absurd humor and government conspiracies, relying heavily on the charisma of its main trio.
And you know what? They deliver, especially Jamie Foxx.
Plot
A drug dealer, a pimp, and a prostitute stumble upon a government conspiracy to manipulate social behavior.
Movie Review
A tribute to 70s cinema in the purest “Pulp” style. This movie could have easily become a forgettable parody, but instead, it asserts its worth through visual elements.
They Cloned Tyrone
No, it’s not “art-house cinema” nor a film for niche audiences. It’s a highly entertaining comedy with extravagant dialogues that, through surrealism and farcical situations, reflects on more serious matters while maintaining a comedic tone without delving into social criticism.
Above all, it’s a very enjoyable film that owes much to the excellent performances of the actors and,...

"Your heart knows things that your mind can't explain." Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled an official trailer for an adorable indie romance titled Stars Fell on Alabama, from filmmaker V.W. Scheich. This is a very "Welcome to Alabama" film, all about going back home. Successful Hollywood agent Bryce Dixon is returning to Alabama for the first time in 15 years for his high school reunion. When he learns he's the only one of his friends who isn't married with children, he convinces his client, starlet Madison Belle, to pretend to be his girlfriend. But he soon learns that success has different meanings, and romance may be closer than he thinks. Of course. Starring James Maslow and Ciara Hanna, with Jason Burkey, Jaclyn Betham, Lesa Wilson, and Ginny MacColl. This looks like it has some Alabama charm, despite being super cliche. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for V.W. Scheich's Stars Fell on Alabama,...

Beacon Point is the kind of movie you have to watch in an isolation chamber because even the slightest distraction is more interesting than this hour and a half hiking montage.

Hannah is going through a rough time in her life: she has a severe case of asthma, a severe bout of depression and a severe crush on her best friend who is dating someone else. After having a panic-induced seizure onstage during her debut in a new play, Hannah learns that she was born severely prematurely—24 weeks—as the result of a failed abortion. Thus, Hannah begins her empowering journey of self-discovery and forgiveness in Andrew Erwin and Jon Erwin's October Baby.

Rachel Hendrix takes to the role of Hannah with a bipolar enthusiasm to match the bipolar tone of the film. What starts as an unbearably melodramatic series of revelations haphazardly switches to a light-hearted college road trip comedy. Hannah joins best friend—and major crush—Jason (Jason Burkey) along with his girlfriend Alanna (Colleen Trusler); comedic sidekick Truman (James Austin Johnson) and the comedic sidekick’s comedic...

Chicago – “October Baby,” which has generated a bit of controversy as we rarely see widely-released films that preach so directly to the pro-life choir and was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, is an incredibly frustrating film. Laying the political hot-button issue aside (and, for the sake of disclosure, I feel like I should note that I am strongly pro-choice), there are things to like here, especially the strong performances from Rachel Hendrix and Jasmine Guy. To be honest, it’s the stuff that’s generally unrelated to the emotional/political core of the film — the non-controversial material — that is the film’s downfall. Whether you’re pro-choice or pro-life, the road movie comedy and romantic drama that are shoehorned into this coming-of-age story are the parts that don’t work. When the film does allow Hendrix the emotional arc, she delivers and the tears are jerked.

If only October Baby played it straight with no agenda. The advent of the mega-church I believe has led to a mega-church sponsored filmmaking, with Courageous being the last film in this category. The problem is these films fit a melodramatic niche, produced by non-filmmakers the language developed is, shall we say, risk adverse. It’s enough to have a sad scene, but it must be heightened by music that tells you how exactly to feel and the grammar is a bit off. It’s a shame, October Baby tells a highly compelling story with strong performances and excellent cinematography by its co-director Jon Erwin. His brother and co-director Andrew Erwin is perhaps to blame, as he’s the editor.
Questionable sound mix aside (a bit rough for a theatrical release, it could use another polish especially in how sound levels frequently drop out as if they didn’t record enough room tone,...

Title: October Baby Directors: Andrew Erwin, Jon Erwin (‘The Cross and the Towers’) Starring: Rachel Hendrix (TV’s ‘Alumni’), John Schneider (‘The Dukes of Hazzard’) and Jason Burkey (‘For the Glory’) People often struggle when trying to figure out where they belong in life, and what their true identities are. This is the main message exemplified in the new drama ‘October Baby,’ the theatrical feature film debuts of actress Rachel Hendrix and directors and writers Andrew and John Erwin. While Hendrix’s main character is supposed to represent everyone’s need for independence and to discover their background, the film unfortunately fails to create its own unique identity with developed characters and detailed [ Read More ]...

Chicago – When reading the plot synopsis for the film “October Baby,” there were a few things I already expected. “A college freshman’s world is rocked when she learns she is the adopted survivor of an attempted abortion” (IMdb). While this is clearly a recipe for melodrama and emotion, writers Jon Erwin and Cecil Stokes ended up creating a story that is even more unrealistic than I first imagined. Luckily for them, the film is still salvaged by some strong acting performances and some engaging visuals.
Directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin and starring Rachel Hendrix, Jason Burkey, John Schneider, and Jasmine Guy, “October Baby” follows the story of Hannah (Hendrix), a 19 year-old aspiring actress who is shocked to find out that some of her medical issues she has had in her life stem from a traumatic birth she had no idea about. While Hannah had never really felt normal or herself,...
