Before being hailed for his shocking transformations and commendable versatility, Christian Bale started as a child actor with not many roles in his now accolade-brimming career. Thanks to one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers, the English actor soon found himself on the path to fame after being cast in Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun.

Matt Damon was initially offered the role of Dicky Eklund in the 2010 film The Fighter. Damon revealed that while he found the subject interesting, the script was not great at the time. After David O. Russell joined the biographical sports drama, he rewrote the script. Christian Bale was cast in the role of Mark Wahlberg’s character’s brother, replacing Damon.

From beginning his career as a rapper to becoming one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, Mark Wahlberg’s journey to superstardom has been inspirational. While the actor has done a gamut of roles, his love for the action genre is well-documented over the years in films like Shooter, the Transformers series, Patriots Day, and many more.

Wahlberg has been a hardcore sports fan, especially when it comes to boxing and the UFC in which he has also invested in professionally. In 2010, the Oscar nominee went through rigorous training to play the role of a boxer in the sports biopic, The Fighter. Despite the celebrity continuing to maintain a ripped physique at age 52, he felt nailing this character now was a bit out of his reach.

Ever since Rocky took the world by storm in 1976, people have been enamored with the idea of an underdog fighting his way to victory. There is something about two people entering an arena and just seeing who is the best. Movies help us find the themes and metaphors we can use for this mentality in our everyday life. If you’re in a funk and then play the Rocky theme, you suddenly become more motivated than ever to get over that mountain called life. With Creed IV reportedly in the works, we figured this would be a great time to put together a list of the best fighting movies other than Rocky.

Tom Brady is getting the biopic treatment.
The Gotham Group is developing a scripted limited series titled “The Patriot Way” about the quarterback, following his rise from a sixth-round NFL draft pick to the global superstar who led the New England Patriots to nine Super Bowls, winning six. It will also cover the Aaron Hernandez, “Spygate” and “Deflategate” controversies as well as Brady’s conflicts with head coach Bill Belichick.
Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson are attached to write the “The Patriot Way,” which will be adapted from “12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady’s Fight for Redemption,” the 2018 book by sports journalists Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge.
Ellen Goldsmith-Vein will produce the series on behalf of the Gotham Group.
Tamasy and Johnson are best known for writing, along with Scott Silver, “The Fighter,” the 2018 biopic directed by David O. Russel that starred Mark Wahlberg as boxer Micky Ward.

Once upon a time, "The Fighter" might have starred ... Eminem? Development on the film began in 2003, while Eminem was fresh off his lead role in "8 Mile," which won an Oscar that year for Best Original Song with "Lose Yourself." He had also achieved success the year before with "The Eminem Show," which won the Grammy for Best Rap Album and was the world's bestselling album of 2002. As he racked up the #1 album, song, and movie virtually simultaneously, Hollywood wanted to continue riding that success and working with Eminem. And it seems he was looking to channel his own inner Rocky, too.

Eminem hasn’t focused much on a career path as an actor, but he apparently was in the running for a film that could have potentially changed his trajectory and had nothing to do with Mom’s spaghetti.
Film producer Todd Lieberman was a guest on the latest episode of the Hollywood Gold podcast, where he revealed that Eminem was initially producers’ top choice to star as boxer Micky Ward in The Fighter. The role in the 2010 David O. Russell-directed movie ultimately went to Mark Wahlberg, with Christian Bale playing his brother Dicky Eklund.
“The first person that we thought would star in this film was Eminem,” Lieberman said. “Eminem was going to be Micky Ward.”
The producer explained that discussions surrounding Eminem followed the success of director Curtis Hanson’s 2002 film 8 Mile, which featured the music superstar playing aspiring rapper B-Rabbit in a story that incorporated autobiographical...

In an exuberant social media post, Zac Efron showed a first look at the impossibly muscular physique he built to make himself ring shape for A24’s upcoming The Iron Claw.
Since Robert De Niro got himself into ring shape to play Jake La Motta in Martin Scorsese’s 1980 classic Raging Bull, it has become a badge of pride for actors to at least once put aside the pasta and wine, and hit the gym with fitness and fight trainers, severely alter their diets, and ingesting who knows what else, to get into ripped shape to be believable in the ring. Efron, if you saw Baywatch, has always had the muscle, and yet his ring photo is nearly as stunning as the one Deadline revealed of Jake Gyllenhaal when he starred in the Antoine Fuqua-directed Southpaw. When that photo went on Deadline, the site got so many hits we almost crashed.

David O. Russell’s The Fighter is arguably the director’s most acclaimed movie (certain more so than the recent Amsterdam). It tells the true story of boxer Mickey Ward and his older brother, Dicky Eklund, played by Mark Wahlberg and (in an Oscar-winning performance) Christian Bale. While based on a true story, you might very well be surprised by how many liberties were taken with some of the micro-and-macro details in the film while still honoring the overall legacy of the scrappy Lowell underdog and his embattled, drug-addled half-brother Dickie Eklund. To be clear up-front, most of what transpires in The Fighter genuinely occurred in how it’s depicted onscreen, with incredible efforts made to recreate the precise in-ring action as it truly happened.
However, in the interest of time and to increase the riveting dramatic stakes of Ward as a true underdog, O. Russell altered several details regarding fighters,...

As it’s that time of year to celebrate our moms for Mother’s Day, we thought it would be fun to look back at some of the most memorable mean moms of the movies. Not those lovable mothers who sang to their kiddos or who heroically sacrificed something great for their kiddos, but those moms who made us shudder at the not-so-great things they were willing to do for their offspring, made us despair that any parent could treat a child in such a way or just made us laugh at their absolute ineptness at parenting. Some might not exactly be mean in the traditional sense but are certainly overly permissive or vastly selfish.
Of course, “Mommie Dearest” herself makes the list. But Joan Crawford (played by Faye Dunaway) isn’t the only real-life mom to make the list. The notorious Tonya Harding has a doozy of a stage...

After landing three Best Director Oscar nominations and two for screenwriting in the last decade, “Silver Linings Playbook” director David O. Russell is heading into 2020 having already signed Margot Robbie and Christian Bale as the leads in his next project at New Regency.
Details are scant on the new movie, but Variety reports that Russell would direct from his own script. Collider reports that Michael B. Jordan has also joined the cast of the film, which revolves around a doctor and lawyer who form an unlikely partnership, while Russell is also courting Michael Shannon, Mike Myers, and frequent collaborator Robert De Niro. He’s eyeing an April start for production.
De Niro and Russell worked together on “Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Hustle,” and “Joy.”
Also coming aboard is Matthew Budman, who executive produced Russell’s most recent effort, 2015’s Jennifer Lawrence-starrer “Joy” as well as the 2013 black comedy “American Hustle.

Hoyte van Hoytema has emerged as one of the great cinematographers of our time: cerebral, emotional, poetic. He creates texture and beauty with formal precision. He’s the thinking person’s cinematographer, who synthesizes the past and the present, but prefers shooting on film for organic, analog warmth.
No wonder director Christopher Nolan was drawn to the Dutch-Swedish cinematographer. They are kindred spirits, and their work on “Interstellar” and “Dunkirk” (shot mostly with the 15-perf IMAX film camera) recalls the scope and intimacy of the legendary David Lean and Freddie Young pairing on “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Doctor Zhivago.”
In all likelihood, “Dunkirk,” which portrays the heroic evacuation of Allied soldiers from German occupation during the early stages of World War II, should result in Hoytema’s first Oscar nomination. Shot from three perspectives — land, sea, and air — the footage we’ve seen thus far is breathtaking in its visceral force.

Everyone loves a good family drama, or dramedy, or dark comedy — or whatever your personal genre-demarcation preference may be — and they’re usually awards-show catnip. Whether it’s a more whimsically dysfunctional family like the Hoovers in Little Miss Sunshine or a decidedly sardonic group like the Burnhams in American Beauty, your nuclear unit probably seems normal in comparison. The construct of this film reminded me a little of the first Alien, in that it spends so much time setting up characters, introducing us to their trivialities and bits of their life, so that when bad things happen, you’re far more invested in them.

A new year means an opportunity to reflect on the past. This is our list of the 100 best films of the last 15 years, Part 1 #100 through 76.
The first decade and a half of the 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the landscape of film. The advancement and sophistication of computers has made realistic computer generated effects a mainstay in both big-budget and small-budget films. The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success. Movie attendance has fluctuated along with the economy, but that hasn’t stopped films from breaking box office records,...

'The Fighter' movie: Mark Wahlberg as boxer Micky Ward. 'The Fighter' movie review: 'Smart' filmmaking from a business standpoint David O. Russell's The Fighter is a smart film; smart in the way it's constructed and executed as a means to appeal to a wide audience. People tend to like sports movies. They also tend to like movies where the good guys win and where the hardships the characters go through can all get tidily worked out by the time the credits start rolling. The Fighter is smart from a business standpoint. That also means Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy, and Eric Johnson's screenplay is predictable and much too “safe” as well. Russell and the screenwriters don't tread any new territory; in fact, they don't even try. On the positive side, The Fighter offers several solid performances that make up for some of what's lacking elsewhere. 'The Fighter'...

While biopics have been a successful genre in the move industry, they are also the hardest subset to engage in strategically. After all, a standard film about someone's life will usually cover all of the interesting parts in one sitting. David O. Russell's The Fighter knew to leave some events out of the film's running time, in hopes of producing a sequel built on the continuing adventures of Micky Ward. It's been a couple of years since the first word of a possible sequel has broken out, but producer Todd Lieberman seems to walk the middle of the road when it comes to a possible sequel. Collider caught up with Lieberman while he was doing the rounds on The Divergent Series: Insurgent, and the producer was asked about the potential sequel that's been in the works for around four years. Ryan Kavanaugh and Tucker Tooley at Relativity Media have been through different manifestations through the years that involved grand enterprises like slate financing half of the movies in Hollywood at one time, and plotting an Ipo in the near future. The story of this festival has been the number of upstart companies that bought films as they re-brand themselves into indie distribution players. They include the soon-to-be-renamed Millennium buying Madame Bovary, EuropaCorp buying Big Game for its new domestic distribution pipeline Red, and Rlj/Image acquiring the Thomas McCarthy-directed Adam Sandler comedy The Cobbler.
Relativity has also been honing its own identity, and it made the first two deals of the festival, buying the completed picture The Woman in Black 2, and Kidnap, a thriller that Halle Berry will star in. Relativity chased the Chris Rock film Top Five and premiered two films here, Beyond The Lights and Hector And The Search For Happiness.

The film follows Madeleine, an art dealer, whose very presence throws the lives of her middle-class, North Carolina in-laws into chaos. Amy Adams plays a childlike and naive pregnant girl who is amazed by her sister-in-law's seemingly glamorous life. This was really Adams' breakthrough performance and the first film to snag her an Oscar nomination.

Hong Kong in the summer time is a whole different magnitude of hot and humid than I think I've ever experienced before. While I'm sorry we didn't end up doing the interviews for "Transformer: Age Of Extinction" outside where you could have seen more of the city, I get it. It was punishing weather, and I'm sure if you're Mark Wahlberg, you don't want to to spend six hours sitting in that while people ask you about working with giant robots. I am an unabashed fan of Wahlberg, both as an on-screen presence and as a person. I think he's had a fascinating personal evolution over the last twenty years, and I love the way filmmakers have evolved their own thinking about how to cast him and what roles he fits. One of the best things that happened to him was when people realized that his earnestness can be wildly hilarious in the right context.

A quarter-century ago, Kevin Costner hit a double-play, following up "Bull Durham" with "Field of Dreams" and becoming king of the sports movie. Twenty-five years later, as "Field of Dreams" marks its 25th anniversary (it was released on April 21, 1989), Costner is back with "Draft Day." The movie's about football, not baseball, and Costner's character plays in the executive suite, not on the field, but his mere presence still offers a reminder of great sports movies past.
And after all, isn't nostalgia a key element of sports movies? "Field of Dreams" makes this explicit -- we long for the sports heroes of our childhood, for a supposed long-gone golden age of our preferred sport, as a way of connecting with our past and bridging the generational divide that separates us as adults from our parents. Sports movies offer more than just the drama of winners and losers, or the journey from dream to achievement,...

Just before we started this interview, I mentioned the craziest thing that happened on the set of "The Invention Of Lying," curious to see if Garner had ever made the connection. When I visited that set, it was in Lowell, Massachusetts, and it was just me visiting for the two days I was there. They sent a driver to my hotel on both days to get me to and from the set, and if there's anything I've learned over the years, it is that you should always talk to the drivers on a film, because they know everything. Sure enough, the guy who drove me back and forth during my time in Lowell was especially chatty, a really nice guy who had grown up in the area. One of the things we discussed was that another movie company had optioned the rights to the driver's life and they were planning...

To celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of Rush this week, we’ve taken a look back at sports in the movies to bring you the Ten Best Sports Biopics…
Brian’s Song (1971)
A weepie isn’t something you always associate with a sports biopic, but Brian’s Song does such an extraordinary job in portraying two teammates and friends. American football players Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers butt heads when they both compete for a starting spot on the Chicago Bears. They ultimately become buddies, yet their friendship is cut short when Brian is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Try to hold back the tears at the end of the film … just try.
Raging Bull (1980)
The argument continues to rage amongst scholars and everyday moviegoers as to what director Martin Scorsese’s best film actually is, but any conversation about it has to include his knockout boxing biopic Raging Bull.

Mark Wahlberg is back on the big screen this week with Lone Survivor, the gruelling true-life drama about four Us Navy SEALs who find themselves behind enemy lines during the war in Afghanistan.
Wahlberg has experienced a career resurgence of late, complementing high-profile acting roles with producing duties on Prisoners, Boardwalk Empire and Entourage. Dive into his back catalogue, however, and you'll find some great acting work from the man who started his career with the Funky Bunch.
Digital Spy picks Wahlberg's five best movie roles below:
Boogie Nights (1997)
Roles in The Basketball Diaries and Fear got Wahlberg up-and-running as a screen star, but it was Paul Thomas Anderson's porn opus Boogie Nights that cemented him as a leading man of note. As adult industry star Dirk Diggler - a role allegedly turned down by Leonardo DiCaprio - he swung from wide-eyed idealism to drug-addled desperation throughout the course of the film.

Christian Bale's performance in American Hustle sets him up for a future in which he can become screen legend, but for a while it seemed like we may never see the scope of his unique gifts as a character actor.
From the moment he fire-axed his way onto the Hollywood A-list with American Psycho in 2000, Christian Bale became a cult film icon. His character, murderous banking executive Patrick Bateman went on to become one of the most quotable film characters ever, as evidenced by the sheer amount of internet memes and YouTube clips dedicated to him. Don't get excited, Liverpool fans: director Ron Howard's latest film isn't about the Reds' all-time leading scorer Ian Rush and his rubbish 'tache. Instead, it tells the extraordinary story of the 1976 Formula One season, dominated by the battle between dashing British playboy driver James Hunt (played by Chris "Thor" Hemsworth) and austere Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel "Good Bye, Lenin!" Brühl). After a near-fatal crash at the Nürburgring, Lauda returned just six weeks later, his horrific scalp burns still bandaged and bleeding, to defend his world title. It's scripted by Peter Morgan, who's made a career out of dramatising real events in the likes of The Queen and Frost/Nixon.

"The Fighter" co-writers Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy are ready to explore some of that Olde Towne strength once again, this time giving cinematic nod to the city's reaction to the devastating Boston Marathon Bombing on April 15.
According to Deadline, the pair purchased the rights to an as-yet-unreleased book on the events of that day and the following four-day dramatic manhunt which led to arrest of surviving suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev on April 19.
The book, titled "Boston Strong" and expected to hit shelves next year, is still currently being penned by Casey Sherman (the pair previously adapted another of his non-fiction titles, "The Finest Hours," which is being readied for production) and Boston Herald journalist Dave Wedge publication by University Press of New England.
Johnson and Tamasy share an Oscar nom with Scott Silver for their work on "The Fighter," a drama based on real-life Lowell, Mass. boxing brothers Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund.

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Ah, the Oscars. We so rarely agree on the best film of the year, and yet you know I can’t quit you. There are plenty of recent Best Picture winners that I like – even love in the case of No Country for Old Men – but my personal favorite hasn’t taken the gold in decades. The same cannot be said for the acting categories. Of course there are winners that leave me less than impressed – you sure were fine in Little Miss Sunshine, Alan Arkin – but recently there have been more than a few instances where my winner is the Academy’s winner. This is especially true over the past few years, as this list will reflect.
Case in point, unless Sally Field shocks on Sunday (February 24) and wins her third Oscar, Anne Hathaway’s performance in Les Misérables will earn...

At last night's National Board of Review Awards, we offered our condolences to David O. Russell, who had gotten snubbed earlier in the day by the Directors Guild of America. This led to a rather glorious misunderstanding. First, his response: "What are you going to do?" he told us. "There's a lot of wonderful directors, and you just happen to be part of it, and we're still in the game. And like Micky Ward taught me, you always keep your head up, you know? So we're very happy to be here." Now the misunderstanding: Vulture thought he said Mickey Rourke. (Ward is the real-life boxer portrayed by Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter.) "When did Mickey Rourke teach you this?" we asked diligently. Then the lightbulb went off in our heads. "Oh, wait, you said Micky Ward — it's loud in here!" This made O. Russell laugh. "Micky Ward!" he reiterated.

David O Russell alternates between comedy and psychological drama in this hugely enjoyable film
Silver Linings Playbook has a suitably upbeat title and several of the key ingredients for a standard Hollywood "feelgood movie" – an oddball hero returning home to make peace with his family, an encounter with a kookie girl whom he ends up chasing through the festive, snow-flecked streets at Christmas, a couple of public contests (a dance and a football game) on the results of which the future depends. And indeed the movie does make you feel quite good about humanity as the final credits roll. But this is a David O Russell movie, his sixth since 1994, and for him feeling good is the reward for completing an emotional assault course.
Russell made his debut with Spanking the Monkey, a sparkling comedy about a middle-class lad on the threshold of leaving home to enter medical school, who...

The Oscar-nominated 2010 film "The Fighter" may become a new reality TV show, Deadline reports.
Mark Wahlberg, who produced "The Fighter" and whose performance as professional boxer Micky Ward earned him a Golden Globe nomination, is working on a reality series inspired by Ward's sisters and half-sisters in the movie. A&E has ordered a pilot of the half-hour project, which Wahlberg will executive produce.
The "Untitled Mark Wahlberg Boston Women Project" will follow the day-to-day lives of four real, tough women of Boston. Filming is slated to begin in a few weeks, according to Deadline.
"The Fighter" sisters became a sensation when the movie was released. "Almost everyone who's seen 'The Fighter' has come out talking about 'the sisters,' the six (or is it seven?) big-haired, loud-talking, punch-throwing Irish American siblings," an "La Times" reporter wrote in 2010. Mark Wahlberg turns 41 today, but the bad-boy rapper turned award-nominated actor and producer still has the pecks and abs from his younger days. We recently saw the evidence all over the Web, as he was filming his new movie Pain and Gain in Miami and showing off his killer physique all over town. Mark even took it back to his Calvin Klein ad days by parading around in his underwear on his balcony.

The Fighter Inspiration Micky Ward Tells Of Childhood Abuse Hell
The real life boxer played by Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter was sexually abused as a child.
Sporting legend 'Irish' Micky Ward, whose life story was the basis for Wahlberg's Oscar-winning movie, kept the devastating secret from his friends and family for many years, but has now opened up about the traumatic experience in his new autobiography.
Ward claims he was abused between the ages of nine and 12 by a man who was 10 years older than him, telling New York Post gossip column Page Six, "He never asked me to do anything to him, but rather I was always on the receiving end of his advances. It wasn't every month or every week, but it happened and it happened many times... I didn't tell anyone - I was too embarrassed."
The boxing legend also reveals he confronted his attacker many years later, but fought his instinct to assault him.
He adds, "I could have ripped his head off. But I realised that if I... took justice into my own hands, and wound up spending the rest of my life rotting in a prison cell... he would have won."
Ward's book, A Warrior's Heart: The True Story of Life Before and Beyond The Fighter, is released this week.
