Justin Harding’s Carved, based on the filmmaker’s 2018 short of the same name, falls victim to typical short-turned-feature issues that Brandon Espy’s Mr. Crocket better sidesteps. It's a bite-sized idea in a king-sized wrapper. Hulu's latest "Huluween" treat is stale, dismissively tropey, and cannot sustain its elongated duration. Save for a smattering of body-hacking practical effects, Carved is an unenthusiastic holiday dud that’s not worth its momentary highlights of violent pumpkin-inflicted punishments.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
This September, we’re celebrating Back to School Night with four midnight movies that aren’t just academically themed but also teach the lessons essential to understanding this school of cinema.
First, read the spoiler-free bait — a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film and why we think it’s worth memorializing. After you’ve watched the movie, come back for the bite — a breakdown of all the spoiler-y moments you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.
The Bait: A Lesson in Midnight Movies from Ant Timpson
Midnight movie-goers tend to be friendly, but Ant Timpson is more popular than most.

Exclusive: The rise and fall of World Championship Wrestling (WCW) is to be explored in a new docuseries for Vice TV.
Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia, founders of Seven Bucks Productions, are exec producing Who Killed WCW?
WCW was founded by Ted Turner in 1988 after his Turner Broadcasting System acquired the assets of National Wrestling Alliance territory Jim Crockett Productions. It competed aggressively with the then-titled WWF (now WWE), regularly beating it in the ratings on Monday nights where its Monday Nitro outrated Monday Night Raw. However, it endured significant losses and suffered from the merger between Turner parent Tim Warner and AOL and was shut down in 2001.
The series, which premieres on June 4, will explore the complex factors that led to the promotion’s downfall, including management challenges, creative decisions, and the intense competition during the infamous Monday Night Wars. It will feature exclusive, in-depth interviews with wrestlers, executives,...

Production on MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it Here) and X (watch that one at This Link), is said to have wrapped last May, around the time that production company and distributor A24 unveiled a first look image from the movie that shows franchise star Mia Goth alongside singer Halsey. (That image can be seen at the bottom of this article.) Things have been pretty quiet on the MaXXXine front since then, aside from news of a lawsuit being filed by a background actor – but now, thanks to the YouTube interview show What’s Under the Bed?, we have a bit of a status update from West, who also happened to show off a prop from the film during his interview.
At about the 26:37 point of the What’s Under the Bed? interview, West is asked about the props he has kept from the movies he has made.

Inspiration strikes at the oddest times. Recently, I was watching Blumhouse's "Night Swim" and started thinking about all the strangest killer objects in the history of horror movies. "Where would a swimming pool rank on such a list," I pondered. "Would it rank lower or higher than a hungry bed?" These are the hard-hitting questions that race through my head, only eased by tasks like ranking all the craziest, head-scratchiest, most out-of-bounds killer objects in horror movie history.
We're not talking about flesh and blood killers or animal attackers. Even something like "Santa Jaws" is omitted from contention because while you could blame either the magical pen or sketchbook canvas that brings the Great White Santa to life, it's still a jingle-jangling shark gobbling up victims. This list is dedicated to deadly things that should not kill. Monstrous versions of household items that spring to life and slay the innocent with a most baffling reaction.

What better time to celebrate "Thanksgiving" than midwinter? Eli Roth's latest slasher is officially due out on digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray before the month of January is through, which is good news for horror fans trapped in the doldrums of what is traditionally the worst month for the genre. If you haven't already seen the colonial holiday kill-fest, which was built around a fake movie trailer Roth made for the film "Grindhouse" way back in 2007, you can check it out on premium video on demand now.
You can also watch it for a cheaper price digitally on January 16, 2024, or grab a DVD or Blu-ray version on January 30 -– just make sure to watch out for a mob of shoppers, a la the film's Black Friday-set opening scene. If "Thanksgiving" somehow wasn't on your radar before, here's a quick primer: The movie takes place in the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts,...

Eli Roth’s gory and twisted slasher Thanksgiving is yours to own on DVD and Blu-Ray next month. More details here:
Thanksgiving was one of the bigger surprises of 2023, especially after an uneven year of horror films. Released relatively late in the year, Thanksgiving was met with a lot of positive buzz, including from us.
We wrote in our review that “Thanksgiving is probably the best no-budget, straight-to-streaming, goofy horror flick you’ve ever seen – except it’s distributed by a major studio.”
Thanksgiving follows a town terrorised by a serial killer in a pilgrim costume. Patrick Dempsey, Nell Verlaque, Addison Rae, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Milo Manheim and Rick Hoffman star.
Well, if you missed Roth’s gloriously gory film in the cinemas or you’re just a big fan of physical media, you can buy the disc version of Thanksgiving very soon. The film is due to be released...

Horror is the gift that keeps giving, especially when it comes to inventive carnage on screen. On that front, it’s been a stellar year for memorable kills in horror thanks to a slew of franchise entries, original slashers, surprising takes on demonic possession, and more.
What might be most surprising, in the best possible way, is how 2023 horror pushed boundaries when it came to on-screen deaths. 2023 horror wasn’t afraid to get ruthless when it came to shattering the taboo of killing kids. Nor was it afraid to deliver unforgettable moments on screen through unexpected demises that made us groan, cheer, recoil, and even laugh.
We’re saluting the ten best kills in 2023 horror movies, which means massive spoilers ahead.

When the Weinstein Company gambled on Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s goal of reviving a disgraced type of movie for Grindhouse in 2007, they turned up snake eyes. Audiences weren’t interested in the vintage aesthetics of the double feature, which included Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, as well as a series of fake movie trailers directed by Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie, Eli Roth, and Jason Eisener.
Roth’s contribution to Grindhouse was a promo for Thanksgiving, a cheeky and unremittingly violent nod to holiday-themed slashers like Halloween, Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, My Bloody Valentine, and more. Now, over 15 years later, the feature arrives to offer more of the same, only it isn’t styled as a throwback to the grindhouse era.

It's been 16 years since "Grindhouse" was released and it's still one of the most fascinating genre movies to ever hit theater screens. Not so much in terms of quality (the movie has its die-hard fans and exasperated critics still to this day), but in just how influential it was, especially for a movie that bombed so spectacularly at the box office.
To brush you up on the movie, it was Robert Rodriguez hot off of "Sin City" and Quentin Tarantino joining forces to pay homage to a particular favorite period of genre filmmaking: the "Grindhouse Era." That's where really gory, sleazy, typically super low-budget horror movies had their place to shine in rundown theaters. It was an era of little to no executive oversight, so anything went in these hyper-violent movies.

This Thanksgiving, it's not just turkeys that'll be getting carved up. Horror director Eli Roth is set to follow in the footsteps of "Machete Kills" filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and "Hobo With A Shotgun" director Jason Eisener, turning the fake movie trailer he made for Rodriguez's 2007 film "Grindhouse" into a real, feature-length movie. "Thanksgiving" is now set to strut its way to theaters in time for the colonialist feast day.
While Roth has yet to drop a trailer or first footage from the movie, fans of the filmmaker probably have a good idea of what to expect from the feature-length expansion of a delightfully nasty short that left audiences laughing (and flinching) back when Rodriguez's "Grindhouse" made its debut. It's too soon to tell how much "Thanksgiving" will borrow from its source material, but as the first fiction feature co-written, directed, and produced by the "Hostel" filmmaker since 2015's Keanu Reeves-led erotic thriller,...

Casey Jones has appeared alongside his friends the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in many adaptations of the comic-book series, but the vigilante has never received his own movie. But if Jason Eisener had his way, we’d be watching that Casey Jones movie right now.
Jason Eisener is best known as the director of Hobo with a Shotgun and the recent Kids. vs Aliens, and he took to Twitter to show off a tone reel for a potential Casey Jones movie he pitched to Paramount Pictures five years ago.

There are some filmmakers that just effortlessly ooze cool, and Jason Eisener is absolutely one of those people. The Canadian creative first came to mainstream public consciousness after winning the "Grindhouse" fake trailer contest hosted by Robert Rodriguez and SXSW Festival, and his winning short, "Hobo with a Shotgun," led to a feature film of the same name starring Rutger Hauer. In the years that followed, Eisener has been involved in a slew of ridiculously rad projects, like the killer Christmas tree slasher, "Treevenge," serving as a producer on the well-loved "Turbo Kid," co-creating the Vice series "Dark Side of the Ring," and directing a segment of "V/H/S/2" that evolved into the genre-bending feature film, "Kids vs. Aliens."

You'd think Halloween would be the holiday that the lion's share of holiday-themed horror movies would center around. But that would have to be Christmas, which has inspired the likes of classics such as "Black Christmas," "Silent Night, Deadly Night," "Gremlins," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the incredible "Tales From The Crypt" segment "And All Through The House," and so many more.
Maybe it's because Christmas is supposed to represent the pinnacle of goodness and charity that mucking it all up with blood, guts, and terror is just too perverse to resist. But of all the other holidays on the calendar, Thanksgiving gets my vote for the most untapped potential, horror-wise. Pilgrims? Unseasoned food? Family coming to my house? Wake me up when the nightmare is over.
While there has been a solid assortment of Thanksgiving-themed shockers over the years, from "Kristy" to "Séance" to the delightfully campy "Into The Dark" film "Pilgrim,...

Sixteen years after Eli Roth created the faux trailer Thanksgiving for the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse, and a dozen years after he wrote the screenplay for a feature version of the concept with Jeff Rendell (who played the homicidal pilgrim in the trailer), Thanksgiving is finally set to start filming in Toronto next month… and The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Patrick Dempsey of Grey’s Anatomy and Scream 3 is in talks to play the sheriff in the film. A role that was played by Michael Biehn in the faux trailer.
Thanksgiving is finally happening because Spyglass Media stepped in to provide the funding. Roth jumped at the chance to get the movie made, even though it meant having Deadpool‘s Tim Miller take over as director on the reshoots for his video game adaptation Borderlands.

An adaptation of what I still believe to be one of the creepiest and genuinely unnerving short stories Stephen King ever wrote, the latest Children of the Corn movie (the eleventh overall in the film franchise) has been acquired by Rlje Films and Shudder, and the film is slated for a March 3rd theatrical release, followed by an On Demand and Digital release on March 21st:

Jason Eisener Is Back!
The filmmaker behind cult classics “Treevenge” and Hobo with a Shotgun, not to mention Vice TV’s hit “Dark Side of the Ring”, has turned his V/H/S/2 segment into the full-blown traditional feature Kids vs. Aliens, now in limited theaters and on VOD platforms from Rlje Films and Shudder.
Kids vs. Aliens, which delivers all of the charm, fun, and chaos of a Jason Eisener film, is the latest collaboration between Bloody Disgusting, Cinepocalypse, and Studio71, who jointly produced V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99.
In Kids vs. Aliens, all Gary wants is to make awesome home movies with his best buds. All his older sister Samantha wants is to hang with the cool kids. When their parents head out of town one Halloween weekend, an all-time rager of a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing the siblings to band together to survive the night.

Director Jason Eisener is back with the horror/sci-fi movie Kids vs. Aliens, released in Theaters, On Demand, and Digital on January 20, 2023, from Rlje Films and Shudder.
In Kids vs. Aliens, produced by Bloody Disgusting, Cinepocalypse, and Studio71, all Gary (Dominic Mariche) wants is to make wrestling home movies with his best buds. Jason Eisener has been quite the busy filmmaker over the last decade or so, largely focused on documenting the world of wrestling through his series, "Dark Side of the Ring." That might explain why the guy who made "Hobo With a Shotgun" had a full decade-long break before making his next feature film. Well, fortunately, Eisner has indeed stepped back behind the camera for a new movie, and this time, he's made a kid-focused sci-fi flick in the form of "Kids vs. Aliens," which is set to make its debut later this week.
The movie focuses on a kid named Gary who wants to make awesome home movies with his best friends. Meanwhile, his older sister Samantha wants to hang with the cool kids. When their parents head out of town one Halloween weekend, they throw an all-time rager of a house party that takes quite the turn when aliens attack.

Kids vs. Aliens gets off to a promising start as the crew of a fishing boat witness a UFO splashdown near them and are quickly decimated by its occupants. The scene then cuts rather jarringly to Gary his friends Miles (Ben Tector) and Jack along with his older sister Samantha (Phoebe Rex) making a super 8 post-apocalyptic epic.
After their shoot is disrupted by neighbourhood bully Billy and his friends Sam finds herself interested in things other than filmmaking. There are just two problems. One, Billy is only interested in one thing, well two things, he also wants her to let him throw a Halloween party at her house while her parents are away. Two, or I guess three now, the aliens plan on attending as well.

When Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez teamed up for the hybrid horror crime film "From Dusk Till Dawn," audiences knew to expect a sleazy drive-in movie that was going to be filled to the brim with sight gags, bloodstained carnage, and whip-smart dialogue. The vampire action comedy featured television star George Clooney in his first major role after breaking hearts as Dr. Ross on NBC's smash-hit hospital drama "ER." Seeing Clooney playing against type as a maniacal bad boy must have appealed to the mainstream, and the cinematic clout earned from the new indie classics "Pulp Fiction" and "Desperado" translated into an unlikely hit when "Dawn" staked its way into theaters in January of 1996.
With that success under their belts, Tarantino and Rodriguez had every right to think that the regular moviegoing public knew what a grindhouse theater was, and that they were familiar with 1970s exploitation films. "From Dusk Till Dawn...

One of the most popular films to emerge from Fantastic Fest 2022 was Kids Vs. Aliens by Jason Eisener.
All Gary wants is to make awesome home movies with his best buds. All his older sister Samantha wants is to hang with the cool kids. When their parents head out of town one Halloween weekend, an all-time rager of a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing the siblings to band together to survive the night. The movie features Dominic Mariche, Phoebe Rex, Calem MacDonald, Asher Grayson Percival, Ben Tector.
Sitting at 75 on Rotten Tomatoes, Chris Evangelista of Slashfilm said in his review from September that Kids Vs. Aliens “embraces gore and danger to emulate the type of old-school monster movie kids would gleefully devour late at night during sleepovers.”

Rlje Films and Shudder debuted a rad and expletive-filled trailer for Kids vs. Aliens, a new film from Jason Eisener. The Kids vs. Aliens trailer gives us a fantastic look at the upcoming thriller focusing on a group of teenagers forced to defend their home (and the planet) from extraterrestrial invaders hellbent on using human skin to fuel their spaceship. The footage contains lots of gross-out visuals you’d expect from an Eisener-directed film, in addition to style, vibrant colors, and spooky cinematography.
Eisener directs from a script he co-wrote with John Davies. In addition to dropping a Kids vs. Aliens trailer, the studio also debuted key art and an official synopsis for the upcoming science-fiction horror adventure:

"It's just one of their stupid pranks!" Here we go! From the filmmaker behind Treevenge and Hobo with a Shotgun comes Kids vs. Aliens, his latest wild and crazy indie horror flick from Canada. This premiered at Fantastic Fest, FrightFest, and Sitges this fall, opening in January. Made by filmmaker Jason Eisener - an all-time rager of a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing two warring siblings to band together to survive the night. While it sounds similar to Attack the Block, it looks entirely different. Starring Dominic Mariche, Phoebe Rex, Calem MacDonald, Asher Grayson Percival, and Ben Tector. "Utilizing elements from Spielberg and Donner’s templates, Eisener crafts a nostalgic homage to timeless childhood favorites like The Goonies and Monster Squad, but spices them up with foul-mouthed dialogue and gallons of gore." I had a blast watching this film! Glad they included so many F-bombs in here.

Ahead of the streaming release of "V/H/S/99" this month, Shudder has announced the next installment of the franchise with "V/H/S/85." "Sinister" and "The Black Phone" director Scott Derrickson and "Hellraiser" and "The Night House" director David Bruckner will helm new segments in the found-footage anthology sequel along with Gigi Saul Guerrero ("Bingo Hell"), Natasha Kermani ("Lucky"), and Mike P. Nelson ("Wrong Turn"). Derrickson himself confirmed on Twitter that he has already filmed his segment for "V/H/S/85."
This will be the sixth movie in the main "V/H/S" series, after the original film and its first four sequels, "V/H/S/2," "V/H/S: Viral," "V/H/S/94," and "V/H/S/99." Since the VHS home video format hasn't exactly been in fashion in the 21st century, it makes sense that the series would go back in time to the 1980s with "V/H/S/85" rather than try and move forward into the 2000s.

This past weekend, Jason Eisener celebrated the world premiere of his latest feature film, Kids vs. Aliens, at Fantastic Fest 2022. While it’s been 11 years since the last time Eisener was in the director’s chair for a feature, that doesn’t mean the Canadian filmmaker hasn’t been plenty busy. He’s created several short films, edited and produced a handful of other projects, and has been the executive producer and director for this writer’s favorite TV docuseries, Dark Side of the Ring, for Vice TV.
While at Fantastic Fest, Daily Dead had the opportunity to catch up with Eisener to chat about Kids vs. Aliens, and during our chat, he discussed his extremely busy schedule, why the timing was right to make another feature, how Kids vs. Aliens was inspired by many of his own childhood experiences, and more.

Vice’s “The 3:07 Am Project” gave four emerging horror filmmakers a chance to play around in ‘The Conjuring’ universe with minute-long morsels of murder.
The Conjuring has proven itself to be a worthy cinematic universe, delivering two proper sequels and a slew of spin-offs, with more creepy content on the way to further expand the multi-billion dollar horror franchise. The reception towards Ed and Lorraine Warren’s cinematic antics has somewhat cooled down in recent years and left audiences wondering if what’s currently on slate for The Conjuring universe will be its last hurrah or if “The Nun 3” or “Crooked Man Vs. Annabelle” are inevitable.
There are lofty expectations in place when it comes to The Conjuring IP, but there were also surprisingly ambitious plans in place even during the production of the original movie. A connected Conjuring universe may not have been on anyone’s radar yet.

In Kids Vs. Aliens, all Gary wants is to make awesome home movies with his best buds. All his older sister Samantha wants is to hang with the cool kids. Sometimes you just need a simple monster movie. Look, I watch a lot of horror and genre pics, and I love it when they stretch themselves beyond the boundaries of the genre. I love when filmmakers attempt to use the building blocks of horror and rework them into new, unique shapes. But I also love it when someone says, "You know what? I'm gonna make a simple monster movie." And that's what makes the silly, unhinged "Kids vs. Aliens" so enjoyable.

Although the locker room drama was often just as good if not better than whatever was going on in the ring, and if you knew which message boards to visit or which magazines to subscribe to, there's a chance that you'd still be privy to some of these stories. But most wrestling fans were completely in the dark about things like that.
All of that changed in the modern era thanks to tell-all interviews, company-sanctioned podcasts, and hard-hitting documentaries that leave no stone unturned. The best example of the latter is "Dark Side of the Ring," a Vice series co-created by Jason Eisener and Evan Husney. This fan-favorite show covered some of the most famous and infamous figures and events in wrestling history without...
