“American Star” is an introspective British thriller with Ian McShane in the lead role of Wilson, a mysterious hitman of few words. Filmed on location in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, the English actor revels in the fact that his character “goes there and disobeys his first rule, which is, do the job and leave.” But is Wilson a government operative, a black ops soldier, or something else entirely? “There’s a whole other world out there we don’t know about,” McShane theorizes. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The actor discusses some of Wilson’s quirks, including taking down a flower painting at his hotel and seemingly always wearing black. “In these three days, you get a reflection of what his life is,” McShane says. “He’s missed out on a lot, as exemplified by the people he comes into contact with. I’m not saying he regrets it,...

All people are divided into two categories: the ones who hate horrors and never watch them, and the ones who find them quite entertaining and never miss a new one. It’s only natural that people have different preferences, but with horrors it’s just something different, because you’ll never persuade a hater to watch even a slightly scary movie.
It goes without saying that psychological horror is much scarier than a simple slasher, but when you mix the two subgenres together, you end up with something that will either kill you emotionally or raise your blood pressure with adrenaline.
In 2012 Franck Khalfoun directed a psychological slasher movie named Maniac, which was actually a remake of the 80s movie with the exact same name. The new movie featured Elijah Wood and Nora Arnezeder as the main characters.

American Star is the latest film from Spanish director Gonzalo López-Gallego whose output has ranged from Apollo 18 and Open Grave to Backdraft 2, a 28-year later Dtv sequel to the 1991 hit. Here he and writer Nacho Faerna are presenting a variation on a well-worn theme, the criminal who’s about to pull off their last job before retiring.
In this case, the criminal is a hitman named Wilson who has come to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands to perform what should be an easy assignment. But complications ensue right from the start, when he drives out to the unnamed target’s secluded house, he’s not there. Someone does arrive, but it’s a young woman, not the man he was expecting. Wilson bides his time, then slips out unseen,...

Short days on site, nice rental cars, plus room and board — being a hitman doesn’t seem so bad. But a job is a job, and everybody deserves a vacation now and then. That’s what Wilson (Ian McShane) treats himself to in “American Star,” checking into a Canary Islands resort after discovering his target’s residence empty for the time being. A foreign location and senior citizen with a gun can often indicate a bargain bin actioner these days, but filmmaker Gonzalo López-Gallego surprises with an art-house touch, pushing his star into a considered, if also very safe, tranquility.
The director’s most rewarding decision: simply trusting McShane to summon the mood. Now 81 years old, the decorated English actor conveys a wealth of character with his delicate but steady gait, playing a hitman of few words. It’s beguiling enough to see Wilson scan an empty room for signs...

Ian McShane is 81, but you’d never know it watching him in “American Star.”
Also a producer of director Gonzalo López-Gallego’s new film, the English actor plays Wilson, a seasoned assassin who visits the Canary Islands’ Fuerteventura for a job, but instead unexpectedly becomes involved in the life of a French expatriate (Nora Arnezeder) and the lonely child of a vacationing couple (Oscar Coleman). From the first scene, McShane dances across the screen with the same effortlessness of a performer a quarter of his age, as his character reckons with an escalating series of disruptions to a sequence of events whose outcome is inevitable: someone dying of a bullet from his gun.
Though he’s been working in film, TV and theater for more than six decades, McShane has become well known in America largely in the last two, playing mentors and authority figures on series like “Deadwood” and “American Gods,...

"Rule Number 1 – the less you know about the target, the better." IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for an assassin film called American Star, directed by Spanish filmmaker Gonzalo López-Gallego. There are no American actors in this movie, however, and the title is actually a reference to big shipwreck called the "American Star", which really exists and can be found on the west coast of the Fuerteventura island in the Canary Islands – which is where this film was shot and it also takes place. This 2024 films follows an assassin on his final assignment on Fuerteventura, who remains on the island while his target is delayed in arriving. He becomes drawn to the people he meets and a ghostly shipwreck which complicates his mission greatly when the target arrives. Ian McShane stars + produces, with Nora Arnezeder, Adam Nagaitis, Fanny Ardant, Oscar Coleman, Andres Gertrudix, and Thomas Kretschmann. This really doesn't look that bad,...

One of the best feelings in the world is discovering a series or a movie that you didn’t know about and realizing how distinct it is from anything else out there. Since working at JoBlo.com, I have been lucky enough to come across several series that I enjoyed and got to tell you about them. Sometimes, I am lucky enough to talk to the talent involved about the project and how it came to be. Such is the case with the new Peacock series, Leopard Skin. After watching the excellent series Jett, creator/director Sebastian Gutierrez and star Carla Gugino were kind enough to let me know about their latest project, this half-hour crime series that debuted on Peacock recently (check out our review).
Leopard Skin can be categorized as a heist series, a thriller, a drama, or any number of labels but it thrives by not being locked down to one genre.

Plot: A criminal gang takes two women and their guests hostage when they seek shelter in a remote paradise, where secrets, betrayals and desires bubble to the surface as everyone awaits their fate.
Review: Never underestimate a well-crafted heist. A masterfully constructed plan, whether or not it goes awry, is always a sight to behold. Like a Rube-Goldberg Device or painstakingly arranged rows of dominoes, I am a sucker for a good heist story. Over the years, film and television have played home to stellar examples of this but many are focused on trying to one-up what came before rather than revel in the story itself. Sebastian Gutierrez’s latest project, the Peacock original series Leopard Skin, is a prime example of the pulpy fun you can get out of a heist and its aftermath by pitting a group of characters opposite one another with only the prospect of survival driving them.

At a time when so many crime thrillers tend toward the dark, gritty and prestige-minded, Peacock’s Leopard Skin stands out for being none of those things. While its setup sounds typical enough for the genre — a botched heist, terrified hostages, secrets and standoffs and betrayals — its execution proves to be anything but.
Created, written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez (Jett), this series dances backward and forward in time, taking leisurely detours down semi-random rabbit holes and flights of fancy. It rarely misses an opportunity to admire the beauty of the (frequently unclothed) female form, or to plug into the crackling tension, amorous or otherwise, coursing between its characters. It’s ostensibly a drama, but one studded with oddball jokes.
All these excesses are held together not with airtight plotting, but through a hazy dream logic that at times feels downright opaque. As such,...

Los Angeles-based VR motion chair company Positron has come on board as ‘immersive cinema exhibition partner’ for the title, which received its premiere in the Cannes Xr programme of this year’s film market.

“Le Musk,” the directorial debut of Oscar, BAFTA and Grammy winning Indian composer A.R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”), will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Market’s Cannes Xr program.
The 36-minute film is billed as a cinematic sensory experience incorporating virtual reality, with motion, music and scent integrated into the narrative. It follows heiress and musician Juliet Merdinian, who, 20 years since she was orphaned, seeks out the men who changed her destiny with one powerful memory — that of their scent.
Rahman developed the story from an original idea by his wife Saira. They share a love for perfume and wished to employ scent as a narrative device in immersive cinema. Rahman directed from a screenplay by Gurachi Phoenix, besides composing the score.

Paramount+’s new limited series The Offer tells the behind-the-scenes tale of how the classic film The Godfather made it to the big screen — but not everyone was happy to see it get there.
Thursday’s premiere begins years earlier: As New York gangster Joe Colombo (Giovanni Ribisi) looks to move up in the Mafia hierarchy, Hollywood studio executive Robert Evans (Matthew Goode) faces a financial crisis at Paramount Pictures and Albert S. Ruddy (Miles Teller) is a bored computer programmer at the Rand Corporation. Al meets a TV writer friend for a drink at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont,...

Why is The Offer recommended viewing?
Matthew Goode.
He's so good as longtime producer and Paramount Studios head Robert Evans that you cannot take your eyes off of him, and anything that doesn't work about The Offer is swept under the rug.
Goode's performance is brilliant as he transforms from the actor we've known from The Crown, A Discovery of Witches, Downton Abbey, and The Good Wife into Evans so entirely that it seems as if The Offer was always intended to be his vehicle.
Miles Teller might disagree, as he portrays The Godfather's sole producer, Al Ruddy, and the man from whose book The Offer is adapted.
And to be fair, Teller does a decent job with the material. He makes quite the show of Ruddy's unlikely tale about the mob being as entrenched in The Godfather's production as Mario Puzo (Patrick Gallo) and Francis Ford Coppola (Dan Fogler...

Exclusive: Tony Amendola (Stargate Sg-1) will topline Rough Magic: Exit Shakespeare, a new film from veteran TV director Andy Wolk (The Practice) and Silver Spring Road Films that has recently wrapped production.
The film is set in 1611 on a single night where Shakespeare (Amendola) is at a crisis point in his career. It’s about how writers age, their jealousies, resentments, and regrets, why they can’t revisit their old glories, and how their writing can overwhelm their life. Shakespeare has sacrificed much of his family life for his theatrical success and now—haunted with guilt about missing his young son’s death to the plague—he is forced to reflect on the price at which glory comes.
WGA and Humanitas Award winner Wolk directed from a script he wrote with Elliot Krieger, and produced alongside Matt Handy.

For some reason, too many science fiction films dwell on disasters and not on the sense of wonder of being in space. The majesty and grandeur of the universe doesn’t hold enough promise and therefore release after release seems to focus on the terrible things that will happen to us out there. The latest such release, The Colony, is now out on disc from Lionsgate, which they hope will amuse you until they inflict Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall.

We flip back and forth between not-very-interesting flashbacks about Louise’s childhood (played by Chloé Heinrich), focusing on the relationship with her father Sebastian Roché, and what she sees of a water-logged Earth. "Stop being sorry and learn how to cook!" Dark Star Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a strange, trippy indie horror-thriller mind-f*#k film titled That Cold Dead Look In Your Eyes, which is arriving on VOD next week. Yet another new film made by filmmaker Onur Tukel, who also released Scenes from an Empty Church earlier this year, too. This one is described as "another wildly fun multi-genre hybrid" about a man experiencing strange hallucinations. "Is it stress or an after effect of new technology installed all over the city? He must figure it out or he'll be trapped in this nightmare forever." The film is mostly in French - starring Nora Arnezeder, Franck Raharinosy, Alan Ceppos, Max Casella, with Denisa Juhos, and Barbara Beddouk. This looks like it gets into way more than just horror, a psychological thriller about infidelity, making the right choices, lust, love, and so much more.

According to almost every movie made on the subject, the future of our species and planet is pretty bleak. Mill Creek Entertainment has released a Blu-ray edition of Universal Pictures’ Safe House from 2012. This spy thriller features a first-rate cast including Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson, Ruben Blades and Sam Shepard.
Directed by Sweden’s Daniel Espinoza, the story concerns the capture and escape of a former CIA operative who possesses damning evidence that his superiors are spilling secrets to anyone with a large bank account. The script is by David Guggenheim and may remind viewers of Matt Damon’s Bourne films.
Ryan Reynolds plays Matt Weston, a young CIA agent stuck on housekeeping duty at an empty safe house in Capetown, South Africa. He's restless and eager for a more important post in a less isolated location. The house doesn't see much action, nor does Weston apart from conjugal visits from his gorgeous girlfriend played by Nora Arnezeder.
