By the age of 20 he had his own orchestra and was accompanying silent films. From 1926 he was organist at The Shepherd's Bush Pavilion theater in London. He became a full-time composer after his marriage in 1937. Some of his light music compositions were published under pseudonyms, including Graham Collett, Jose Jordana, Ralph Rutherford and Richard Springfield. He retired to Bournemouth and died there 6 September 1973, aged 74.
