Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping should have been a hit movie. It came out when Andy Samberg was riding high on Saturday Night Live, thanks to the innovative, viral shorts he made with his crew, The Lonely Island. Their “Lazy Sunday” and “D*ck in a Box” shorts were early YouTube smash hits. This movie featured Samberg as Conor4Real, a pop star who split with his former boy band Style Boyz to go solo. It was a loving send-up of the music industry, with Conor having some similarities to Samberg’s pal Justin Timberlake and his split from Nsync. Always one to appreciate a good joke, Timberlake had an extended cameo in the film as Conor4Real’s chef.

Arcade Fire were on hand to celebrate a scientific achievement that’s equal parts awe-inspiring and bone-chilling — the first ever photo of the black hole at the center of our galaxy. And the reason for Arcade Fire’s presence? One of the songs on their new album, We, “End of the Empire IV (Sagittarius A*)” happens to namedrop that supermassive black hole, known as Sagittarius A*.

Some singers start young, before they have a clue about how the music business can chew up their talent and package it for mass consumption. Take Violet, the 17-year-old dreamer played with shy loveliness and a tough core by the luminous Elle Fanning. Violet lives in a tight squeeze on the Isle of Wight, where she’s mocked by schoolmates for singing for drunks at a local pub and berated by her Polish immigrant mother (Agnieszka Grochowska) for believing in fantasies that pay off in heartbreak. Then a British singing...

The 2018 edition of the Eaux Claires festival, the four year-old, artsy two-day fest curated by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and The National’s Aaron Dessner (pictured), came with a unique, potentially exciting concept for anyone tired of the same played-out fest tropes: no lineup would be announced until festival-goers took to the field in Eaau Claires, Wisconsin. In interviews and on social media, the organizers promised that the audience would not be disappointed. Coming on the heels of last year’s fest, which featured an extraordinarily diverse lineup with arena-sized acts including Chance the Rapper and Paul Simon, as well as cultier faves like Wilco and John Prine and a palpable inter-artist energy, it was quite the guarantee.
Sadly, it over-promised and under-delivered. Though Eaux Claires IV was full of one-off musical collaborations and unique sets, the lack of any true large-scale surprises on the lineup gave the whole...

In just its second year of existence, the Panorama Music Festival did much to excite its fans and concert goers. Brought to us by GoldenVoice (think: Coachella), Panorama took over Randall’s Island in New York from July 28 to 30, offering an outdoor concert venue with such great talents such as Frank Ocean, Mgmt, Tyler The Creator, Glass Animals, Spoon, Mo, and more.

Ubi SuntA thematic line running through many of the films in this year’s International Short Film Festival Oberhausen is the inherent materiality of cinema: the objects and bodies immortalized by the act of filmmaking, a desperate yet hubristic gesture which is, as Tarkovsky put it, a “harrowing preparation for death.” The ephemeral is celebrated in film—gestures, moments, glances, events—but to film life is to film death too. And this act of immortalization, the immortalizing of the image through filming (temporarily at least, before the bits and bytes dissipate before the cellulose faces, before the hard drives fail and the DCPs become unreadable) preserves the material world like naturalist specimens in tinted formaldehyde.Bodies are filmed; objects, animals, organs, light and texture. Yet no matter how much of the inner world is stripped away, this cinema of matter only urges the creation of spiritual link to the eternal...

Since filming began all the way back in 2011, it’s been a revolving door of speculation as to what actors and musical acts will make the cut of Terrence Malick‘s Song to Song. As we’re less than 10 days away from the film hitting theaters, we’re now getting a clearer picture.

For the most part, Terrence Malick has favored orchestral arrangements to accompany his films, leaning on original scores and classical pieces to provide their musical foundations. However, he’s changing things up with “Song To Song.” An array of Spotify-ready artists populate the cast and soundtrack, and Pitchfork has the breakdown on who you’ll see and hear in the film — and who you won’t.
Firstly, while he was listed as part of the cast last year, Christian Bale didn’t make the final cut of the movie, nor did performances by Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine, and Fleet Foxes.

When we shared a stream of Nicholas Britell‘s brilliant score for Moonlight last fall, we remarked how Barry Jenkins himself has said he wrote the script to a slowed-down remix of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange. While you can see the traces of that influence in the aural landscape of the film, Og Ron C and The Chopstars have taken the next logical step and created a chopped and screwed remix album, featuring both compositions from the soundtrack, as well as songs that influenced its creation.

A list of things The Reflektor Tapes comes close to being but doesn’t quite end up as: a concert film stitching together Arcade Fire‘s work on a worldwide tour supporting their most recent album, Reflektor; a travelogue of said tour; a sense-memory visual essay tracing the years-long life of songs, tracing from hashing-out and recording to a presentation for thousands of screaming, jumping fans; a channel-futzing sonic exploration...

Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) shot his latest effort, Song to Song, in the heart of Austin, Texas, and it’s also where the filmmaker lives. As such, it makes sense, then, that the notoriously media-shy auteur will bring his new film back to the City of the Violent Crown later this spring to have its world premiere at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival, where it’ll kick off the festivities.
In addition to hosting a film festival, SXSW is also notorious for their music, which means many of the film’s musical acts, including Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Arcade Fire and St. Vincent, will get a chance to stop by and celebrate the world premiere. It’s a win-win scenario, one that will also bring some of the film’s biggest stars, including Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Haley Bennett,...

Patti Smith, Iggy Pop and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are among a handful of musicians set to appear in Terrence Malick's new movie set in the Austin music scene, IndieWire reports.
Song to Song will follow two couples who become entangled: A pair of struggling songwriters played by Rooney Mara and Ryan Gosling and a music mogul and a waitress played by Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman. Billed as a "modern love story," the two couples will "chase success through a rock and roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.

This fall, Joss Whedon spent $508,374 of his own money to keep Donald Trump from becoming President of the United States.
At least, that’s how much money Whedon put into his political action committee Save the Day, per public Fec filings compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan research group that publishes financial information on PACs and super PACs. According to reports, the brand new super Pac, founded a few months ago, had exactly one donor over the last three months:
The Save the Date Super Pac’s funds were devoted to producing “digital advertisement productions” — Aka YouTube videos, which culminated in approximately 18,000 channel subscribers and 11.5 million views across 20 shorts over the last few months. The themes of these videos varied, as did the styles, but Whedon was able to recruit an impressive array of famous faces to appear in them, with one overarching theme taking priority: please vote,...

Last Episode’S Review: Tom Hanks Gives America The Pep Talk It Needs In Halloween-ish Episode
It’s the last weekend before the 2016 Presidential Election, and lord, does “Saturday Night Live” know it. Even they’re ready to be done with this madness, as the show acknowledged in an unusual cold open. Watching stars break character and run away together to the uplifting sound of Arcade Fire was a merciful break from this year’s too-real political commentary, which was about one episode away from going stale. (Looking at you, bizarrely sexist Update.)
As Baldwin and McKinnon address the audience directly, encouraging Americans to vote, we have to wonder – how will the show look next weekend? Fortunately, “SNL” and a magical roster of guest stars never quite let us get there.
Host: Benedict Cumberbatch
Benedict Cumberbatch did the most he could with this week’s material. Had it been a stronger overall episode,...

For the last time before Election Day, Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon reprised the roles of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a Saturday Night Live cold open that rebelled against the "gross" and "mean" presidential election.
The sketch begins with a joint interview between CNN, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, with the news network grilling the Democratic nominee over her recent email scandal, even as Baldwin's Trump is shown kissing members of the FBI and Kkk and Vladimir Putin.
"Hillary Clinton is the most corrupt person ever to run for president.

After weeks of mocking the race to the White House, Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon shared a heartwarming, emotional moment during the cold open on Saturday Night Live.
The opening sketch on Saturday started off as a straightforward lambasting of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton -- specifically the amount of attention being paid to Clinton's email scandals -- but quickly turned into something almost magical.
Baldwin, who has been guest-starring as Trump, has faced off against McKinnon's Clinton during every opening sketch this season, but for SNL's last episode before the general election on Tuesday, it was clear they wanted to do something a little different.
