Mumbai, May 30 (Ians) The Tennis Premier League on Monday announced their expansion with a new franchise, Bengal Wizards with tennis icon Leander Paes as the driving force behind it, joining for Season 5 action to be played later this year.

The Bengal franchise of Tennis Premier League (Tpl), will be owned by the Wardwizard Group led by its chairman, Yatin Gupte, the announcement to this effect was made at a grand ceremony in Mumbai at the Club Millennium Juhu Tennis Courts.

Bengal Wizards will be in action in season 5 of the Tpl along with Pune Jaguars, owned by Sonali Bendre, Hyderabad Strikers, owned by Rakul Preet Singh, Bengaluru Spartans with Sania Mirza as ambassador and Punjab Tigers, owned by Taapsee Pannu. The Season 5 of the league will be played in December 2023.

Lucknow, May 27 (Ians) Sravya Shivani, an Indian international tennis player who won two medals, including a gold, in the 2019 South Asian Games, is participating in her second Khelo India University Games and trying to give back to the sport to make it more accessible.

Indian Wells (USA), March 19 (Ians) India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden won the Indian Wells Masters men’s doubles title, defeating World No.1 Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in the final, here on Sunday.

The victory marks Bopanna and Ebden’s first Masters 1000 title as a team, and their second in their first season as a pairing.

Indian veteran Bopanna, who turned 43 on March 4, became the oldest man to ever win a Masters 1000 doubles title, surpassing his former partner Daniel Nestor. He is also the first Indian man to claim the Indian Wells Masters doubles title since Leander Paes in 2007.

Matthew Ebden, who is the 2022 Wimbledon Men’s Doubles Champion, was bought on as the marquee player for season four of the Tennis Premier League and was the most expensive pick up at the Auction. Despite stiff competition from other franchises for the signature of the grand slam winning Australian, he was picked up by Delhi Binny’s Brigade for Rs 8.45 lakh due to smarts of their mentor Aditya Khanna.

In addition to Matt Ebden, Delhi Binny’s Brigade picked up Sowjanya Bavisetti, an Indian tennis player who won 2 Gold and 1 silver medal in team and individual events, at the 13th South Asian Games for the price of Rs 3.50 lakh.

Pune, Sep 23 (Ians) Punjab Tigers is the latest franchisee that has become part of the Tennis Premier League and is all set to compete in the fourth season of India’s premier tennis tournament.

The Tpl is returning for their fourth season this year and will run from December 7 to December 11 in Pune.

The Punjab Tigers will compete against the likes of the Pune Jaguars, co-owned by Sonali Bendre, and Mumbai Leon Army, co-owned by Leander Paes, to name a couple of teams.

All franchises will play a total of 4 matches to qualify for the semi-finals. Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Mixed Doubles and Men’s Doubles will be played between each franchise. There will be 80 points at stake in each tie between two franchises where each match would be worth 20 points. Each team will play a total of 320 points (80 points x 4 matches) at the league stage.

New Delhi, Sep 14 (Ians) Former Indian tennis player and Davis Cup captain Naresh Kumar, who was a mentor to Olympic medallist Leander Paes, passed away in Kolkata on Wednesday.

He was 93. He is survived by his wife Sunita, son Arjun, and two daughters — Gita and Preah.

“We have come to know about the sad demise of Indian Tennis Legend and former Davis Cup Captain Naresh Kumar. It’s an irreparable loss to Indian Tennis. We pray for his eternal peace and our deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans around the world,” said Aita in a tweet.

Kumar rose to prominence in 1949, making the latter stages of the Indian International championships and Northern Championships. He made his debut for India in the Davis Cup in 1952 and was a mainstay of the team.

New Delhi, Sep 10 (Ians) Ahead of the Davis Cup 2022 World Group I tie against Norway, the Indian tennis team on Saturday suffered a major blow after its most experienced player Rohan Bopanna pulled out due to knee inflammation.

The 42-year-old took to social media to inform that he was advised an indefinite rest before starting to compete again.

“I have had to make a tough call this week against my constant love and devotion towards representing the country and withdraw from the Davis Cup team against Norway,” Bopanna said in a tweet.

“I have an inflammation on my knee and have been advised to rest it before I start competing again,” he added.
