After nearly a year of allegedly ducking service of a lawsuit claiming child sexual abuse in his organization, Scientology leader David Miscavige sent his lawyer to a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday to seek disqualification of the judge on the matter using a peremptory challenge — a special right that doesn’t require a reason and is allowed only within the first few days of appearing in a legal matter for the first time.

The Church of Scientology has been accused of trying to “derail” actor Danny Masterson’s rape trials, according to legal documents filed in December 2023 and obtained by TheWrap. He was convicted in those trials for raping two women in 2001 and 2003 whom he had met through the church.
Masterson’s rape victims filed legal documents in December 2023, obtained by TheWrap, claiming the church launched a “campaign of harassment and intimidation directed at one of the prosecutors assigned to Defendant Masterson’s trial” in an effort to “derail Masterson’s criminal trial” as well as his second criminal trial.
The prosecutor’s name wasn’t revealed in the document, though the charges do match similar ones discussed in a speech by L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller last year, according to the Los Angeles Times, which also reports that a spokesperson for the church has denied the claims.

Leah Remini’s defamation and harassment suit against the Church of Scientology is far from dead, but it’s constitutionally wounded.
In a March 12 split final ruling from Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Randolph Hammock (read it here), the David Miscavige-led organization has prevailed on getting significant portions of the ex-Scientologist’s action stricken on First Amendment grounds. However, parts of Remini’s harassment claims, “allegations of surveillance” and the tortious inference claim remain in the case going forward.
Having issued a tentative ruling on these matters weeks ago, and overseen hearings in Dta on January 16 and February 6, Judge Hammock’s final ruling doesn’t really contain anything anyone in the case didn’t know what coming. Still, even with an October 27, 2025, trial start date on the books right now, it would be foolish to say that Remini hasn’t suffered a setback from Scientology’s successful use of...

A Los Angeles judge has thrown out portions of Leah Remini’s lawsuit against Scientology, finding that some of the church’s attacks on her are protected under the First Amendment.
But in a mixed ruling, the judge also found that the church cannot claim free-speech protection for allegedly stalking, harassing and surveilling Remini, or for harassing producers and staff who worked on her anti-Scientology podcast.
Since leaving Scientology in 2013, the “King of Queens” actor has become its most prominent critic, writing a memoir and hosting two seasons of the A&e docuseries, “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.”
Last August, she filed a 68-page lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging she had been subject to a decade of online attacks, stalking and intimidation designed to punish her for her criticism of the church.

Update, 8:30 Pm: After a very brief turn in Charles Manson’s old prison, Danny Masterson has another new home behind bars.
Serving out the opening months of a 30-year sentence, the convicted rapist has been moved to the cushier digs of California’s Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo. Unlike the harsher conditions and even harsher residents at the Golden State’s high security Corcoran State Prison, where the Helter Skelter leader spent his last two decades before dying in late 2017, the Men’s Colony is a medium and minimum-security facility.
Concerns for “the inmate’s well-being” begot the 47-year-old That 70s Show actor’s move in the last week or so, according to a law enforcement source. In custody since being found guilty on May 31, 2023 of two rapes in his second trial and held in Dtla and then North Kern State Prison, Masterson was moved to Corcoran...

(Editor’s Note – this story has been updated to reflect more information that has been presented about Leah Remini’s name on anti-Scientology websites) The Church of Scientology should be labelled a “criminal enterprise” due to its “pattern of racketeering activity,” say the plaintiffs in the civil harassment case against the David Miscavige-led organization and Danny Masterson. With three more rape claims against the incarcerated That 70s Show actor in a proposed second amended complaint, the accusers want the LA courts to allow mafia-inspired Rico charges to be included in the case now.
At almost the same time, in another lawsuit, the Church seems to have put forth weak evidence for its own argument that the one of the main reasons it harshly criticizes Leah Remini is because the former Scientologist has long been “inspiring violence” against Scientology and its leadership.

Update (8/4/23):
The Church of Scientology has fired back at actress Leah Remini, who announced earlier this week that she planned to sue them, along with their head, David Miscavige, over harassment and defamation claims. In a statement, the group labeled Remini a “horrible person” and a “bigot”, adding that her claims are out of “pure lunacy.”
The Church of Scientology also remarked that Leah Remini is actively against free speech, saying, “Remini’s complaints are like an anti-Semite complaining about the Jewish Anti-Defamation League for exposing the anti-Semite’s bigotry and propaganda…The Church is not intimidated by Remini’s latest act of blatant harassment and attempt to prevent truthful free speech. If Remini does not believe in free speech, then she should consider emigrating to Russia.”
Further, their spin tried to take the position that her words are harming both the actress and the organization. “Remini’s obsession with attacking her former religion,...

The Church of Scientology has responded to a fresh lawsuit filed by former member, Leah Remini, calling it “frivolous.”
Remini — who’s been an outspoken former Scientologist for years, often claiming the religious organization was a “cult” that surpassed boundaries and inflicted an abusive force over her life — filed the suit Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. She even released her own Apple TV+ docu-series in 2016 titled “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath”.
In her filings, the 53-year-old actress took her allegations against the Church even further, wielding a steep lawsuit against them that alleges claims of harassment, stalking and defamation, as per a report by The Hollywood Reporter.
Remini left the organization in 2013 after joining at 9 years old with her parents in 1979.

Updated: Leah Remini has filed a lawsuit against the Church of Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige, for harassment, defamation and other unlawful conduct. Remini, who joined the Church in 1979 as a child and left in 2013, claims Scientology’s “mob-style operations and attacks” have “significantly” impacted her life and career.
“For 17 years, Scientology and David Miscavige have subjected me to what I believe to be psychological torture, defamation, surveillance, harassment, and intimidation, significantly impacting my life and career. I believe I am not the first person targeted by Scientology and its operations, but I intend to be the last,” Remini stated in a press release sent out Wednesday.
In a statement released Thursday, the Church of Scientology responded to Remini’s lawsuit, calling the actor and former member “an anti-free speech bigot.”
“If Remini can no longer get a job, she has nobody to blame but herself,” the Church continued.

Updated with church response: The relations between Leah Remini and her former friends in Scientology have been bitter for a decade, as the actor’s harassment lawsuit against the church this week made clear.
On Thursday, in an invective-filled response to that suit, the David Miscavige-led organization made the point themselves.
Calling the multi-claim complaint against the church and Miscavige “ludicrous and the allegations pure lunacy,” Scientology got personal in its response, referring to the Emmy-winning Scientology and the Aftermath host as “a horrible person” and a hate-speech-spewing “bigot.” The statement seemingly sidestepped the issues brought up in the suit to slam once-favored member Remini as “toxic to so many who have the misfortune to come in contact with her.”

Actress Leah Remini filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige.
Remini is claiming years of attacks and is alleging that they have been stalking, threatening, defaming and harassing her. In addition, she is seeking “to end Scientology’s policies against Suppressive Persons so that current and former Scientologists, and others who wish to expose Scientology’s abuses, including journalists and advocates, may feel free to hold Scientology accountable without the fear that they will be threatened into silence.”
According to the lawsuit, Remini is maintaining that she is the victim of “intentional malicious and fraudulent rumors via hundreds of Scientology-controlled and -coordinated social media accounts that exist solely to intimidate and spread misinformation.”
She is alleging defamation as she claims that Miscavige and other Scientology members created false video statements about her. This includes that she “was abusive to her mother and daughter and that she is a racist.

Leah Remini is moving forward with legal action against the Church of Scientology.

The King of Queens alum's lawsuit is the result of alleged "civil harassment, stalking, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and intentional interference with prospective economic advantage."
Remini says the Church has "undertaken a campaign to ruin and destroy" her life and livelihood.
The lawsuit states she is "a former Scientologist of nearly 40 years, a two-time Emmy-award winning producer, actress and New York Times best-selling author" who was "deemed a Suppressive Person and declared Fair Game by Scientology in 2014 when she publicly departed Scientology, a Suppressive Act as laid out by Scientology directives."

Leah Remini has sued the Church of Scientology in a wide-ranging lawsuit that includes claims of harassment, stalking and defamation.
Remini, who broke with the organization in 2013 before becoming a outspoken critic, alleges in a suit filed on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court that she has been “stalked, surveilled, harassed, threatened, intimidated, and, moreover, has been the victim of intentional malicious and fraudulent rumors” to intimidate and silence her. She points to a “series of retaliatory activities” against people and groups deemed an “enemy” of the church.
The complaint names church chairman David Miscavige and the Religious Technology Center, which allegedly manages policing operations and enforces punitive measures. Remini seeks unspecified damages and a court order requiring the group and any entity it controls or funds to “cease and desist its harassment, defamation, and other unlawful conduct.”

Among other consumer benefits, one major upside to the increasing niche-ification of popular culture has been the continuing emergence of esoteric micro-genres of film and TV. Twenty years ago, you might not necessarily think of “horror documentaries” as its own subgenre. Sure, there were documentaries that maybe fell a little more on the creepy/unsettling side, but it was rare that a nonfiction film would be tailored to appeal to a horror-first genre audience. Now, of course, things are different. In recent years, a robust tradition of terrifying nonfiction films have emerged, many as terrifying – or even more eerie – than their traditional narrative counterparts.

Last year’s Top Gun: Maverick, with its millions at the box office, helped rescue the movies and movie theaters from the brink of Covid-19 and streaming. This year’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh and ostensibly penultimate installment of the secret agent series,...

Mission: Possible
“Movies for the big screen”: Tom Cruise launched the latest edition of his sprawling Mission: Impossible franchise Monday afternoon with an elaborate red carpet hoisted up on the Spanish Steps in Rome, and Nancy and Baz were there to witness all. The eternal city and it’s famous stone staircase feature heavily in the film alongside the Piazza di Spagne, giving it quite the European feel. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the seventh entry in the wider franchise and is once again helmed by Cruise’s now-frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie. You can check out images from the premiere here, which appeared to be an emotional event for Cruise, who spoke passionately with Nancy about...

With an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and six Golden Globe Awards to her name, Nicole Kidman is no stranger to winning big, but it's safe to say that her children are her most prized possessions. In 2018, when Kidman took home a Golden Globe Award for best actress in a limited series or TV movie for her role in "Big Little Lies," she gave a moving speech about the power of women in light of the Time's Up movement to end sexual harassment and gender inequality. She also gave a sweet shout-out to her two daughters with husband Keith Urban, Sunday and Faith, joking that they can actually watch her since she won the first award of the night. "This means my daughters are still awake, so, Sunny and Faith, I love you," she said at the time. "I'm bringing this home to you, babies!"

The jury in Danny Masterson’s rape retrial has begun deliberations.
The panel went behind closed doors this morning not long after the conclusion of the prosecution’s final rebuttal and a last unsuccessful move by the defense to have a mistrial declared.
Following closing arguments on May 16 by deputy D.A. Ariel Anson and then closing arguments by defense attorney Phillip Cohen, deputy D.A. Reinhold Mueller was the last person to address the jury in the downtown LA courtroom, before Judge Charlaine Olmedo sent the panel to come up with a verdict.
Facing over 40 years behind bars if found guilty on a trio of rape charges, Masterson’s first trial started on October 18, 2022 and ended in a mistrial being declared on November 30 after the jury remained deadlocked.
Despite attempts by the defense to get the case dismissed, the retrial of the That 70s Show actor began on April...

Leah Remini has been attending the trial of Danny Masterson, who’s accused of raping three women in separate incidents that occurred between 2001 and 2003, when he was starring on “That ’70s Show”.
Remini, a longtime Scientologist who left the controversial church in 2013, had some thoughts on Masterson’s lawyers, which she shared in an essay she posted on Substack.
“As always, I attended to support the brave women who were raped by Danny and then later harassed, stalked, and attacked by Scientology,” the former “King of Queens” star wrote.

“That ’70s Show” actor Danny Masterson is back on trial again.
The new trial began on Monday morning with jury selection in downtown Los Angeles, after the jury in Masterson’s first trial last year failed to reach an unanimous verdict, stating they were “hopelessly deadlocked.” With a hung jury, a mistrial was declared in November and Judge Charlaine Olmedo denied a defense request to dismiss the case.
Now, Masterson will face the same three rape charges associated with the same three alleged victims, but in front of a new jury.
Masterson — who maintains his innocence — is accused of forcibly raping the women at his home in the Hollywood Hills in incidents spanning from 2001 to 2003. At the time, he was starring on the hit sitcom “That ’70s Show,” which ran on Fox from 1998 through 2006.
Masterson’s first trial began last October and spanned over the course of two months with lengthy deliberations.

The director of the Scientology documentary Going Clear has said he is “surprised” there hasn’t been a “reckoning” for Tom Cruise.
The Top Gun: Maverick star is one of the highest profile members of the Church of Scientology, having joined the controversial religion in the 1980s.
Alex Gibney is a filmmaker known for directing the 2015 film Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.
The film, which was vehemently denounced by the Church of Scientology upon its release, made a number of shocking allegations about the organisation, involving claims of abuse inflicted upon members and misconduct among its leadership. Representatives of the church denied the allegations.
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine in a new interview, Gibney was asked what it was like to see Cruise endure as the “King of Hollywood”.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were one of the defining power couples of the 2000s. The reasons weren’t all positive, however. As with all of Cruise’s marriages, his time with the former Dawson’s Creek actor was something of a strange public spectacle thanks to his involvement with the Church of Scientology.
Holmes was distressingly quiet about her situation while married to the Top Gun star. Eventually, she had a dramatic split with both Cruise, and the clutches of the notoriously possessive Scientology leadership. While not all the details are public knowledge, there are a few shocking details out there about how Holmes got away from Scientology and her superstar ex-husband.

Jennifer Connelly is pushing for her Top Gun: Maverick costar Tom Cruise to receive an Oscar nod for Best Actor.
The veteran action star reprised his titular role as US naval aviator Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Joseph Kosinski’s 2022 reboot of the 1986 original. Connelly played Cruise’s love interest in the new film, Penny Benjamin.
Action stars rarely receive a nomination for Best Actor, with that category typically honouring the stars of dramatic roles.
Asked if Cruise should buck that trend this year in an interview with Variety, Connelly confirmed that he should.
“He’s extraordinary,” she said. “He does an amazing job in the movie. He’s extraordinary as a person and fantastic as an actor, and I think that he is just perfect. He embodies that character so beautifully, and I think he absolutely deserves it.”

In his new ad campaign, former Navy prosecutor Ron DeSantis dons an aviator outfit replete with goggles, billing himself as “Top Gov” and spoiling for a dogfight against the liberal-leaning media. Those who disagree with his positions are promptly dis-invited to future speeches or press conferences.
Will this strategy appeal to a broad audience, or will it limit the Florida governor to a “niche”? Top Gov has his eyes on the widest niche — the presidency — and hence has set his campaign on a political version of Cruise control. Says his top communications aide, ”We know the media hates us and hates everything we stand for.”
Does DeSantis honestly believe he can unite the Republican Party by being even more polarizing than Donald Trump was before he was voted out and, many charge, fomented an attempt at a government overthrow by his unruly hardline base, the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers crowd?...

Director Todd Field has recalled how Tom Cruise helped save his first film from interference from Harvey Weinstein.
Field, whose latest film Tár has been drawing rave reviews and Oscar buzz, starred alongside Cruise in the 1999 Stanley Kubrick film Eyes Wide Shut.
The incident with Weinstein came back in the early 2000s, when Field had just directed his first film, In the Bedroom.
After the film was well received at the 2001 Sundance film festival, it was acquired by Miramax, the company owned by the powerful producer – now a convicted sex offender.
Speaking to The New Yorker, Field revealed that he was concerned about Weinstein’s reputation for imposing substantial re-edits on films distributed by his company.
“I was weeping in the bathroom,” Field recalled. “I called up Tom Cruise and said, ‘Something terrible has happened.’ He basically said, ‘This is how you’re going to play it. It’s going to take you six months,...

Ezra Miller has avoided a jail sentence as they pleaded guilty to trespassing on a neighbour’s property.
Last year, the actor – who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns – found themselves facing a string of arrests and reports of erratic behaviour stretching from Hawaii to Vermont.
The trespassing incident involving Miller took place on 1 May 2022, when Vermont State Police responded to a burglary complaint in Stamford after several bottles of alcohol had reportedly been taken from a residence while the homeowner was away.
The homeowner said he had been friends with Miller for about 18 years and bought the home a year and half ago in the town, where Miller had also purchased a home.
Miller was charged after police consulted surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses. In October, they pleaded not guilty to stealing the alcohol.

Kai Lawrence, the subject of The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker, has accused Netflix of “ruthlessly exploiting” him.
On Tuesday (10 January), the streaming platform released a feature-length look at Lawrence, who became a viral sensation in 2013, and the deadly events that followed.
Lawrence – whose real name is Caleb McGillvary – was a homeless person who prevented a man from trying to kill a woman after “smashing” him round the head with a hatchet.
After a video of him detailing the incident was shared online, Lawrence was hailed a hero and received instant fame.
Chat shows hosts lined up to interview him, and musicians, including Justin Bieber, requested collaborations with him.

However, Lawrence’s story didn’t end there. Just three months later, he was on trial for the murder of New Jersey attorney Joseph Galfy, which he claims was self-defence after being “drugged and raped”.

Fans of The Traitors are cancelling their January plans in their droves.
In December, the BBC game show became a breakout hit throughout its three weeks on the air.
The series, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, saw 22 strangers play “the ultimate game of detection, backstabbing and trust” at a Scottish Highlands castle in the hope of winning up to £120,000.
After the series, which is executive produced by Studio Lambert, came to a dramatic conclusion on 22 December, viewers were left wondering if the show would return for a second outing.
While the BBC has yet to officially say whether this will happen, fans are being given the perfect gift to tide them over until that announcement is inevitably made.
On Friday (13 January), the US version of the series became available to view as a boxset on BBC iPlayer.

The Brit Awards are receiving widespread criticism after failing to recognise a single woman in the Artist of the Year category.
Nominees were announced for the forthcoming ceremony on Thursday (12 January). This year is the second year that the organisation has abandoned gendered categories.
The artists nominated in the category celebrating the best in the UK were Central Cee, Fred Again.., George Ezra, Harry Styles and Stormzy.
No women were nominated for the prize, which has been seen as a big step backwards after Adele won the award in the gender-neutral category’s inaugural year in 2022.
“So the Brits introduced an Artist of the Year category as a gender-neutral replacement for Best Male and Best Female Artist category – but this year all five nominees are blokes,” tweeted musician Tim Burgess. “One step forward, three steps back.”
“Florence and the Machine being snubbed at the Brits when she could have fit...

Ryan Dorsey has penned an emotional message, remembering his late ex-wife Naya Rivera on what would have been her 36th birthday.
In July 2020, the Glee star went missing after renting a pontoon boat with her then-four-year-old son Josey Hollis, whom she shared with Dorsey.
Though Josey was found unharmed at the time, Rivera’s body was discovered days later and she was pronounced dead from accidental drowning. She was 33.
On Thursday (12 January), alongside an old photo of Rivera and Josey, Dorsey wrote on Instagram: “A little easier with each little bit of time that passes by to look at pictures
“But I still don’t have the answers to the questions to the ‘why’s’ our sweet boy asks from time to time. I never will,” he added. “Doing the best we can.”
Dorsey then added a note to those reading, saying: “No matter what you’re going through, take...

A past Seth Rogen interview has resurfaced after Golden Globes host Jerrod Carmichael shocked the audience with a Scientology comment about Tom Cruise.
During the ceremony, Carmichael joked: “Backstage, I found these three Golden Globe awards that Tom Cruise returned. I think maybe we take these three things and exchange them for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige.”
Miscavige is a member of the Church of Scientology, and is married to its leader David Miscavige. She has not been seen in public since 2007. Cruise is a known Scientologist, and has been a member for 30 years.
While promoting his 2021 book of essays, Yearbook, Rogen appeared on Howard Stern’s radio show and recalled the time he and director Judd Apatow were invited to Cruise’s house around 2006.
The Pineapple Express actor began what he called his “bizarre” story by explaining that the visit took place shortly after the birth of Cruise...
