Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist was the talk of the Lido on Sunday as the seven-years-in-the-making period epic finally received its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival’s historic Sala Grande cinema.
The audience inside the premiere erupted in applause as the credits began to roll on the film’s epic three-hour, 35-minute running time, giving Corbet and his cast a rousing, festival-best 13-minute standing ovation. Stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones looked teary at times by the effusive reaction to the movie.
The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a rave review, with chief critic David Rooney describing The Brutalist as “a monumental symphony of the immigrant experience” with a “devastating” performance by Brody as Tóth.
The Brutalist has all the thematic heft and intellectual rigor befitting its subject: The historical trauma and artistic vision that gave rise to the great works of mid-century American Brutalist architecture. But Corbet...

A Norwegian model took the stand in Harvey Weinstein’s trial on Wednesday and testified that the former movie mogul allegedly raped her, masturbated in front of her and propositioned her for a threesome.
The complex testimony spanned a series of events over a number of years. The alleged incidents occurred during industry events such as the BAFTA Awards, New York Fashion Week, the Cannes Film Festival and AFI Fest, as well as an audition for the musical film “Nine,” which was distributed by The Weinstein Company in 2009.
Weinstein’s defense questioned the woman, known in the case as Natassia M., as to why she agreed to see Weinstein repeatedly after she alleges she was sexually assaulted. She spoke about the power imbalance between her and Weinstein, telling the jury she was concerned that if she didn’t keep up a friendly relationship with Weinstein, he would blacklist her from the biz.

Bouncing back after a breakup can be tricky. After a bad breakup? It can feel nearly impossible. And Georgina Chapman knows from bad breakups. Regardless of whether she should have been a bit more aware of then-husband Harvey Weinstein's insidious actions she was, by her own admission, shocked when the accusations of sexual harassment, assault and rape began to roll in from dozens of women in October 2017. These days the red carpet isn't merely a showcase of glitz and glamour. It's a platform used to advocate for social and political issues. Stars have used fashion to make a statement in various ways, such as wearing a specific color to show solidarity (2018 Golden Globes attendees donned black to stand with sexual harassment and assault victims) or wearing a controversial designer (Scarlett Johansson chose Marchesa for the 2018 Met Gala, designed by Harvey Weinstein's ex Georgina Chapman).

With only two episodes left this season, Wednesday’s Project Runway All Stars presented the remaining four designers with their greatest challenge yet — and not everyone rose to the occasion.
“Recently, what constitutes a family has been debated in society; families now come in all shapes and sizes,” Alyssa Milano told the group before explaining this week’s “family” challenge: “You will each be creating outfits for three members of a modern family. Your designs must be cohesive, because each of your families will take a portrait photo together, and that family portrait will be revealed to everyone on the runway.

The two designers on the chopping block at the end of “Nina Says Don’t Cry Over Spilt Silk” were Anthony Ryan Auld and Michelle Lesniak, the only two designers who had won two previous design challenges (Lesniak just won her second last week). It was Auld who ended up exiting the competition after a challenge he tearfully struggled with, but I don’t think he really deserved to go. He was one of the best designers of the season, and maybe I’m in the minority but I thought he was one of the better designers of the night too. Do you agree? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Auld’s heart wasn’t really in this week’s challenge, which was to design a gown for a royal ball with luxurious silk.

As Heidi Klum used to say on “Project Runway,” “In fashion, one day you’re in, and the next you’re out” … unless you’re Dmitry Sholokhov. The bulletproof designer, who won both “Runway” season 10 and “All Stars” season 4, has looked just as indomitable in “All Stars” season 7, which brought together an entire cast of past champions from around the world. He won the very first challenge of the season and has been safe every week since. But in “All-Inclusive” he found himself in uncharted territory: the bottom two! My hot take is that the judges’ criticisms were overdue.
“All-Inclusive” challenged the designers to create gender-neutral street-wear looks for various male, female, and non-binary models. Sholokhov’s primary inspiration was a trench coat with a crisscross in the front and an open back, all in a silver metallic fabric. Judge Georgina Chapman praised him for his “flawless,” “polished” clothes, but...

Sean Kelly just couldn’t get it together on “Project Runway All Stars.” He won the red carpet design challenge in “Pedal to the Metal,” but that turned out to be a rare triumph for him. He was plagued by inconsistency, and he ended up with more low scores than anyone else this season so far. This week, in “All-Inclusive,” he landed in the judges’ bottom three for the fifth time, and that was the last straw. Scroll down to vote in our poll to let us know if you thought he deserved his fate.
As a male “Project Runway” fan,” the “All-Inclusive” challenge was my favorite of the season so far since it required the designers to create gender-neutral street-wear looks for variety of male, female and gender-nonconforming models — at last I could judge the designers by whether I would be caught dead in their looks! Cynthia Hayashi just couldn’t get it together on “Project Runway All Stars.” A winner of the Brazilian version of the fashion series, she never distinguished herself to the judges in this country. She got a low score in the season premiere. And then she narrowly escaped elimination in “Of Corsets Fashion.” The panelists liked her well enough to advance her safely through the competition every other week, but she never once got a high score, so when she disappointed them again in “Penneys from Heaven,” it was clearly the last straw. Did she really deserve to be eliminated? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

You know the right designer was sent home when their only defense is: “I really don’t think that my outfit today was that bad.” (Oh, but it was. It really was.)
Wednesday’s episode of Project Runway All Stars sent the season’s remaining eight designers to Jc Penney to “shop for three different daytime separates and transform them into one sensational nighttime look.” Unfortunately, two of those elements — specifically “sensational” and “nighttime” — were missing from Cynthia Hayashi‘s final presentation.
“The vest is a little frumpy,” guest judge Vanessa Williams said in her critiques. “It’s a little matronly.

In the first six weeks of competition on “Project Runway All Stars” there had been six different design challenge winners — no repeats. That finally changed in the lucky seventh week. Or at least, it was lucky for Anthony Ryan Auld, who won the “Pure Imagination” avant garde challenge. That made him the first contestant to win two challenges. Did he deserve his repeat victory? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
This challenge, inspired by “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” was to create a never-before-seen fashion invention that would be incorporated into their looks. Auld’s idea was a coat that would aid in communication: a wearable dry-erase board. The ever-supportive Dmitry Sholokhov wondered what the point of such an invention was in a world full of smartphones, but the judges didn’t share his grumpy assessment.

“What we’ll see will defy explanation.” Those lyrics from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” couldn’t have been more fitting on “Project Runway All Stars.” In episode seven, “Pure Imagination,” the designers embarked on this season’s avant garde challenge. So who got the judges’ golden ticket, and who was booted from this factory tour? Scroll down for our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
The avant garde challenge has always been an opportunity for designers to let their freak flags fly, but they had better fly high, especially this season. In the first six weeks of the competition the judges saw some wild, unflattering designs, but they have often been harder on contestants who created bland, uninspired looks (like Juli Grbac) than those who took big swings and missed (like three-time low-scorer Django Steenbakker). And when it comes to avant garde fashion, there’s nothing worse than boring.

Django Steenbakker may be down, but he’s not out … yet. The “Project Runway All Stars” designer has gotten low scores from the judges for the last three weeks in a row, but he hasn’t even been in the bottom two yet, let alone eliminated. However, he hasn’t been safe since week three, and he hasn’t gotten a single high score from the judges yet. Will he finally have a breakthrough tonight in week seven, or will the judges finally cut him loose? Our readers think he’ll finally be eliminated — but we’ve been wrong before.
Steenbakker gets leading odds of 41/20 of being sent home from the show in ninth place, but if there’s one thing that might keep him in the competition for a while longer, it might be his bold choices. When he’s been near the bottom of the design heap he...

Anya Ayoung-Chee warned us in the season premiere of ‘Project Runway All Stars” that sewing wasn’t her strong suit. She was almost eliminated from the show on that very first challenge. But then she seemed to get along just fine, earning safe scores from the judges every week thereafter … until now. In episode six, “Pedal to the Metal,” the rubber finally met the road and she couldn’t drape her way out of it, even with ample assistance from her fellow designers. Did she really deserve to go? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Ayoung-Chee’s strength was in flowing looks, so she knew she was in trouble as soon as the challenge was announced: to create a red carpet look with metallic fabric. The problem was that a metallic fabric wouldn’t work with her usual aesthetic, so it exposed her biggest weakness as a designer.

A metal-themed challenge on Wednesday’s episode of Project Runway All Stars took one designer a little too far out of her element. The remaining 10 contestants were instructed to create an “elegant red carpet carpet look using metallics,” one that also includes a “unique texture.”
For the most part, the designers seemed pretty confident going into this challenge — perhaps too confident. Michelle Lesniak, who prides herself on her work with metallics, was the first to brag, declaring this the “sparkle dazzle challenge.” Irina Shabayeva, meanwhile, gave us a full rundown of the stars she’s dressed on red carpets: Carrie Underwood,...

To paraphrase a common sentiment, I don’t know much about fashion, but I know what I like. And I like “Project Runway All Stars” front-runner Dmitry Sholokhov just fine. But after five weeks of competition I’m kind of wondering what all the fuss is about. The judges have loved his designs, but I’m not sure he has belonged in the top three as often as the judges have put him there. Do you think his designs have really been as strong as his results? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know.
Sholokhov came into this “All Stars” season undefeated, having won the show both times competed before: “Runway” season 10 and “All Stars” season 4. Another one bites the dust on “Project Runway All Stars.” Juli Grbac was the latest international contestant to be deported from the show this season, which pits American “Runway” champs against the winners of foreign spin-offs. So far three out of the four eliminations were of designers who came from abroad. Did the Australian Grbac really deserve to be ousted at the end of the “On the Prowl” design challenge? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know.

“Some of these people are just wolves in sheep’s clothing,” said “Project Runway All Stars” contestant Michelle Lesniak after the drama that ensued during the “On the Prowl” challenge. She designed a jagged-edged look inspired by a porcupine, but some of her fellow competitors thought she plagiarized one of Dmitry Sholokhov‘s looks from a previous season. Sholokhov seemed to think so too. The judges were also reminded of his aesthetic, but they didn’t think she stole anything from him because they gave her the win. What do you think? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know if she really deserved this victory.

The “Project Runway All Stars” contestants this season designed looks inspired by national heritage, corsets and even airplane parts, but in episode five the show went to the dogs — or maybe the zebras, the elephants, or the gorillas. In “On the Prowl,” the remaining 11 competitors took their inspiration from zoo animals. So who won the challenge, and who went on the endangered species list? Django Steenbakker was cruising safely through “Project Runway All Stars” season seven before he got his first low score of the season in episode four, “Of Corsets Fashion.” Can he rebound from that? There have already been contestants this season who bounced back from a low score immediately to earn a high score, or even a win. But our users think Steenbakker is at greatest risk of elimination going into episode five tonight. Do you agree?
This season of “All Stars” pits American “Runway” champs against winners from the show’s international spin-offs, and Steenbakker comes to this competition by way of “Project Catwalk,” the Netherlands version of the series, which he won back in 2007. Our readers thought Jasper Garvida should have won last week’s unconventional materials challenge on “Project Runway All Stars,” but this week the judges thought it was time for him to go. It didn’t seem like his fellow designers will miss him much either. But do you think he really deserved to be eliminated in “Of Corsets Fashion“? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
This week the designers had to make sophisticated outwear out of underwear, using the style and structure of corsets to create their runway looks. But Garvida was already rubbing his opponents the wrong way before the judges even laid their eyes on the finished products. As we also saw last week in “Buckle Up!” Garvida had a tendency to be, shall we say, demanding with his models, instructing them on exactly how they should present his designs down to the smallest gestures.

None of Project Runway All Stars‘ remaining 13 designers were thrilled by the announcement of an unconventional materials challenge on Wednesday’s episode, but they channeled their inner Tim Gunn and made it work — for the most part.
Always the bearer of good news, host Alyssa Milano assembled the baker’s dozen of contestants on a Southwest plane, where she explained this week’s challenge: Repurpose flight-related items into a “glamorous look for modern-day air travel.” Additionally, they would have to recycle seat leather into an accessory for their garment.

I’ve had it with these monkey-fighting unconventional challenges on this Monday-to-Friday plane!

But “Buckle Up!” should be no sweat for a cast full of past “Runway” champions, right? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
Last week’s “Top of the Class” challenge ended with the elimination of Canadian “Runway” champ Sunny Fong, leaving 13 contestants in the running for the world title. Dmitry Sholokhov won the season premiere challenge, and then Anthony Ryan Auld recovered from his rough start by winning in “Class.” That means the American “Runway” champs are two-for-two, while the international winners are aiming to strike back.

It’s one thing to perform poorly on a “Project Runway” design challenge, but it’s quite another to reject the challenge outright.
