Star Wars sequel trilogy star Daisy Ridley is swapping a lightsaber for an axe for her first foray into the horror genre.

Ahead of its world premiere at Australia's Adelaide Film Festival this November, Variety has shared the first official stills from new zombie survival thriller We Bury The Dead.

Written and directed by Zak Hilditch, the movie stars Ridley as a woman named Ava who is searching for her husband in the aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment that has decimated the population of Tasmania.

Ava joins a “body retrieval unit” in a desperate attempt to find out what happened to her husband, and ends up being tasked with burying the corpses. However, she soon comes to realize that some of the bodies aren't quite as dead as they should be.

A serial killer's violent impulses live on through voodoo in The Devil's Dolls, coming out in select theaters and on VOD and digital platforms on September 16th, and we caught up with director Padraig Reynolds in our latest Q&A feature to discuss the making of his southern-set horror movie.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Padraig. What attracted you to the story of The Devil’s Dolls?

Padraig Reynolds: I’m a big fan of voodoo films such as Serpent and the Rainbow and Venom. So when I read The Devil’s Dolls, I thought it would be a great opportunity to do something fresh and exciting in a genre that not too many movies are made about.

Christopher Wiehl co-wrote, produced, and stars in the film. What was it like working with Wiehl, who seemed very invested in the character of Matt?...

You can tell just by September’s VOD offerings that we are definitely inching our way closer to another Halloween season, as we have 12 different titles hitting VOD and various digital platforms this month. Things kick off on September 2nd with Danny Perez’s surreal Antibirth from IFC Midnight, and just a few days later, The Neighbor (the latest collaboration between Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton) comes home as well.

Both The Neon Dead and The Shallows hit VOD on September 13th, and two more horror films—The Devil's Dolls and Tell Me How I Die—arrive just a few days later on digital platforms everywhere.

UK genre specialist Jinga Films has sold three of its titles to North America in deals closed at the Cannes Marché.

Padraig Reynolds’ supernatural horror Worry Dolls [pictured] has been picked up by IFC Midnight, which in recent years has handled the Us releases of horror films including Can Evrenol’s Baskin and Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook.

Starring Christopher Wiehl (Jericho), Kym Jackson (Iron Sky) and Samantha Smith (Transformers), the film follows a detective racing against the clock to save his eight-year-old daughter from a voodoo curse. IFC previously released director Reynolds’ debut feature Rites Of Spring.

Padraig Reynolds’ second feature will be released in Q3 2016.

London-based genre specialists Jinga Films has sold Padraig Reynolds’ horror feature Worry Dolls to Studiocanal for the UK and Ireland.

The film, which premiered in Frightfest’s Discovery strand this year, stars Christopher Wiehl (Jericho) as a detective investigating a sequence of voodoo-related murders.

Also starring Kym Jackson (Iron Sky) and Samantha Smith (Transformers), Worry Dolls was produced by Christopher Wiehl, Greg Haggert, Padraig Reynolds and Danny Kolker. Wiehl and Kolker also wrote the screenplay.

Jinga Films also previously handled Reynolds’ debut feature Rites Of Spring.

Studiocanal has previously distributed two Jinga titles, Hellions in 2015 and Blood Moon in 2014, both of which received limited theatrical runs.

It’s been quite some time since I saw Padraig Reynolds’ debut feature Rites of Spring back at Glasgow Frightfest 2012 and since then Reynolds has been pretty silent on the directing front. However, being a huge fan of that film there was no way I was passing up the chance to see yet another slice of Reynolds’ particular style of Southern Gothic.

Much like Rites of Spring mixed genres, taking in crime drama and traditional stalk and slash horror, by way of Southern horror like Jeepers Creepers; Worry Dolls mixes old-school voodoo with the tropes of classic 80s slashers (yes, this is yet Another Frightfest movie to utilise the sterotypes of the slasher genre) in a tale that – like Last Girl Standing...

Worry Dolls is an upcoming horror film. In the film, an ancient cult curses a rural city as authorities search for a serial killer. Worry Dolls stars: Brea Grant (Halloween II), Brandon Johnson, Ashlynn Ross and Samantha Smith. The film was shot in Mississippi. And, the first trailer for the film is available here. The trailer develops the story further. However, a serial killer escapes capture, but he has his eyes focused on a dirtied, emotionally scarred, young woman. Meanwhile, a worry doll is found by a child; she is changed by her interaction, with this strange voodoo-like figurine. A cult leaves strange symbols about and the killer returns, late in the clip. Osiris Entertainment has picked up the indie thriller Ashes for a future release, while Time Warner has acquired video-on-demand rights for this title. Release dates are to be formalized, but expect Ashes to become available in early 2012 with a vod release likely to come earlier than the DVD release (prediction).

Ashes is a story of an obsessive doctor who turns patients in to shells of their former selves. Infected with a virus, these patients turn everyone around them into mulch to the doctor's despair. Kiss From Calcutta is a thirty-two minute short from director Christopher Drews and writer Jacob Gentry. A darkly themed film Kiss is suspenseful, but also frustrating as some of the film is left unexplained, all the way to the end. The excellent visual imagery and an interesting story make the film recommendable, but a little more time could have been spent developing the characters, and storyline.

The film is centrally a tragic love story between characters Pete (Jacob Gentry), and Ashley (Kym Jackson). However, Ashley is an assassin and Pete is a coke addict; so, this is a relationship in trouble from the get-go. Add in a greater criminal element, and things quickly deteriorate between these two flawed and desperate human beings. But what about the unexplained elements in the film?
