Gabriela Tagliavini’s Tequila Re-Pasado zoomed in on the story of Danny (Sebastián Zurita), a middle-aged man with a not-so-perfect life. Yes, he did have a lovely wife who loved him more than anything, but his nosy boss, Jero (Miguel Rodarte), and his mean colleague, Taylor (Ludwika Paleta), took away all the good things in his life. From the looks of it, Jero was a phony spiritual guru, motivational speaker, and the author of eight best-selling books. Jero couldn’t even write his own speeches or improvise when things went south. He had to depend on his employees, Taylor and Danny, for it.
As for his personal life, Danny rarely spent time with his wife, as he was always busy at work. Danny often forgot their anniversary and went back on promises he had made to Mon. However, Mon was still happy in her mediocre life and soon met with...

Pantaleon’s animated film Un Rescate De Huevitos (An Egg Rescue) is a rarity in the specialty box office as a Spanish language animated film. And its opening weekend success will certainly come as no surprise in Mexico where the franchise is its highest-grossing film series to date.
The Spanish-language animation performed tremendously at its 320 locations, averaging over $1,300 per screen—a solid achievement for an animated kids flick. With Sunday’s numbers in, the Alatriste brothers-directed film will have grossed $430K in its opening weekend. Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and Austin areas were Rescate’s best markets.
Un Rescate De Huevitos is a sequel to 2015’s Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos (A Rooster With Many Eggs) and the fourth film in the Huevos franchise overall. The latest tale follows a rooster named Toto (Bruno Bichir) who goes on a rescue mission to free his egg children Max and Uly...

The premise of Paolo Genovese’s 2016 Italian hit “Perfetti sconosciuti” was simple: A group of longtime friends – three couples, and one seventh wheel – gather for an intimate dinner party, and in a sort of ill-advised parlor game, decide to spend the evening with their cell phones on the table, reading all their incoming texts and DMs out loud, and taking all their incoming calls on speaker. After all, among such close friends and happy couples, who has anything to hide?

Less than a year after it was released in his native Italy, Paolo Genovese’s smash hit “Perfect Strangers” inspired a Greek remake. Within two years, there were nearly a dozen other remakes, including versions made in Spain, South Korea, France, Hungary, China, and India, with still more films planned in Poland, Germany, Qatar, and Sweden. (Wondering where the American version is? The Weinstein Company snapped up English-language rights before the company collapsed.)
Now Mexico is getting in on the act. Manolo Caro’s take on the lively chamber play is a modern comedy of manners that may hinge on the influence of cell phones and the internet, but chronicles emotions and twists that don’t need technological fluffing. "What secrets do you expect us to have, Eva?" Pantelion Films has unveiled an official Us trailer for the release of Perfectos Desconocidos from Mexico, remade by filmmaker Manolo Caro. The title translates to Perfect Strangers, and they're billing this as a "Spanish speaking comedy with English subtitles" from Mexico. It's actually the second remake of an Italian film which first premiered in 2016 - Perfect Strangers or Perfetti Sconosciuti, which was then remade in Spain last year, and is now being remade by Mexico. This version of the film stars Cecilia Suárez, Manuel García-Rulfo, Mariana Treviño, Miguel Rodarte, Bruno Bichir, Ana Claudia Talancón, and Spanish newcomer Franky Martin. This actually looks like a super fun cinematic party game, with a dash of commentary on how much phones have changed our lives. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Manolo Caro's Perfectos Desconocidos, from YouTube: We all have a secret life.

“Perfect Strangers” revolves around a circle of friends who decide to lay bare all their secrets at a dinner, placing their smartphones on the table to share any incoming messages or calls that evening. What starts as a parlor game takes an unexpected, disastrous turn.
“The premise cleverly zeroes in on a fear few want to even contemplate: Being found out,” said Variety critic Jay Weissberg in his review. “Once upon a time secrets were shared between friends, but now the cell has become the repository of our illicit behaviors, and the moment that’s exposed, all is laid bare,...

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has unveiled its 2015 line-up which includes films representing 54 countries, 23 world premieres and 53 U.S. premieres. The U.S. premiere of Niki Caro’s McFarland USA will close out the 30th fest. Based on the 1987 true story and starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello, the film follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. The unlikely band of runners overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.
The festival runs from January 27-February 7.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

"Mexico City. 2002, 2006, 2010. A cop. A hostage. A wife. Corruption, violence, vengeance. Three destinies, during 30 days, during three Soccer World Cups. Three ways to fight in order to survive." This is the synopsis of "Days Of Grace." Starring Eva Longoria, Carlos Bardem (Javier's brother), Miguel Rodarte and Paulina Gaitan, while writer/Director Everardo Gout's first feature doesn't have a U.S. release date yet (it screened out of competition at Cannes last year), it does have a rather interesting soundtrack worth noting and maybe that'll give it extra attention.

The title alone should give you some hint of the tongue in cheek nature of this gunslinger comedy action film, and for all the corny, melodramatic scripting, it manages to tell the story of a man attempting to rescue his brother from service overseas to fulfill his mother’s last wish (albeit, begrudgingly). With the help of some colorful banditos, Julian (Miguel Rodarte) sets off into war-torn Iraq on his chaotic misadventure that will see him and his crew ineptly scaling a half-baked rescue. Saving Private Perez has the potential to catch audiences off-guard, as its overly obvious title and silly premises set your expectations pretty low. Then the comedy hits you with some overly zany or absurd bits that come out of nowhere. It’s fair to say few people have seen a film quite like Saving Private Perez.

Seven Days in Utopia averaged an ungodly $2,203 per site according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Not faring any better, Beto Gómez's Mexican comedy Salvando al Soldado Perez / Saving Private Perez drew $670k at 161 locations, averaging $4,161 per site. Remember, all things being equal, the smaller the number of theaters, the higher the per-theater average should be. Now, a clarification: as a non-English-language film clearly targeting Mexicans and Spanish-speakers living in the Us, Saving Private Perez couldn't really...
