Stevie Nicks performs in New York City
Birthday shoutouts go to Anne Rice, who is 71, Susan Sarandon is 66, Liev Schreiber is 45, and Alicia Silverstone is 36.Speaking of Stevie Nicks, once again she's not among this year's nominee list for The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Yes, I know she's in with Fleetwood Mac, but her solo career deserves recognition. This year's nominees (of which five acts will be chosen) are Donna Summer, Joan Jett, The Meters, Public Enemy, N.W.A., Albert King, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Kraftwerk, Randy Newman, Procol Harum, Rush, the Marvellettes, Deep Purple and Chic. My five choices would be Heart, Donna Summer, Joan Jett, Kraftwerk, and the first band I ever saw in concert, Rush. Smash wonder-producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are developing another musical project for NBC. "The hour-long dramedy centers on a 30-something songwriter who has written the most epic love songs of our time,...

For Rush, all those years living in the limelight will hopefully lead them to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Canadian power trio is just one of several artists who have been nominated for the Rock Hall's class of 2013. The other nominees include Deep Purple, N.W.A., Public Enemy, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Albert King, Kraftwerk, the Marvelettes, the Meters, Randy Newman, Procol Harum and the late Donna Summer. To be eligible for inclusion in the Rock Hall's 28th annual ceremony, all nominees must have released their first album or single at least 25 years ago. More than 600 artists, historians and members of the music industry will decide who...

This year's 15 contenders for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame run the gamut from hard rockers Rush to disco diva Donna Summer. The eventual five inductees will be determined by a group of 600 leading lights in the music biz and, for the first time, the public who can have their say by voting online. In making the announcement, CEO Joel Peresman explained, “The definition of ‘rock and roll’ means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music. This year we again proudly put forth a fantastic array of groups and artists that span the entire genre that is ‘rock and roll’.” The 15 contenders are: The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Chic Deep Purple Heart Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Albert King Kraftwerk The Marvelettes The Meters Randy Newman N.W.A Procol Harum Public Enemy ...

As promised, Blur delivered two new songs via Twitter this week, "Under the Westway" and "The Puritan." Both now have official lyrics videos, and now one has a performance music video. Check out Blur's Damon Albarn behind the keys on "Under the Westway," filmed in the studio. It confirms the suspicion that drummer Dave Rowntree need only toms to make a beat interesting, that kid instruments still have a place in "adult" music, and Albarn must have a deep-seeded affinity for Procol Harum's "A Lighter Shade of Pale." Blur last released new music in 2010 on Record Store Day, a track called...

In 2006, before I started The Playlist film blog, out of boredom I began what I called the The Playlist Soundtrack Series. A sort of "If I Were _______ (insert filmmaker's name here)" type thing. The concept was naive and simple: choose a handful of music-savvy filmmakers whose work I admired and create imaginary soundtracks for movies they hadn't made, based on their taste and music they might conceivably use one day. It began as nothing more than a fun exercise for me, as I had time on my hands back then.
Eventually, I had amassed a half a dozen of these soundtracks in various states of completion, and to host them somewhere I started The Playlist blog in 2007. It then became a place to discuss music in film, soundtracks, etc., and when that topic was outgrown slightly (after a while you tend to hit all the classic film and soundtrack bases...

Everett Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1973)
Ken Scott has as many great stories to tell as anyone in the rock and roll world. And he isn’t shy about sharing them.
Talk about being a fly on the wall. Scott was the engineer on The Beatles’ White Album, among other sessions by the fabled band, and the producer on David Bowie’s classic 1972 album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.”

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Procol Harum's Gary Brooker were among the members of an all-star band who performed in celebration of Douglas Adams's birthday last night (March 11) in London. The musicians, who were long-standing friends of Adams's, headlined the "virtual 60th birthday" of the late Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy author at the Hammersmith Apollo. Other members of the band, who were introduced by Richard Curtis, included guitarist Robbie McIntosh, percussionist Jodi Linscott, synth player Paul 'Wix' Wickens, singer Margo Buchanan, bassist Dave Bronze and Paul Beavis on drums. McIntosh opened the set before being joined by the rest of the band in stages. Gilmour joined the band and sung Pink Floyd hit 'Wish You Were Here'. He also played lead guitar (more)...

Atlantic City, New Jersey — For the first stop on its traveling roadshow, the Dave Matthews Band Caravan brought a rootsy collection of friends to dusty Bader Field on Friday. And even after a career-spanning set that included "Don't Drink the Water," "Satellite" and "Why I Am," Dmb still have plenty of hits to draw from for the next two headlining performances of their inaugural three-day festival.
Matthews gave nods to almost all of the day's supporting acts, mentioning Delta Spirit, Carolina Chocolate Drops and The Head & The Heart, and saying, "It was a pleasure to share the stage with Ray Lamontagne." David Ryan Harris, who played Friday afternoon, joined the band for perennial crowd favorite "Jimi Thing" from their 1994 debut, Under the Table and Dreaming.

In 1985, things were not looking so good for Doctor Who. The show was to be put on ice for 18 months in the wake of controversial storylines and supposedly poor viewing figures – all tosh of course, especially when you think that the programme was still pulling viewing figures of about seven million – a perfectly respectable number.
So The Doctor doesn't get to take Peri to Blackpool – well, on screen, at least. And unlike previous years, there were no more customary Who repeats in the summer to mollify the fans. 18 months, as I've said, isn't such a long time by today's standards, but back in 1985, you can understand why fans were weeping into their scarves. The crisis was so bad that the infamously bad 'Doctor In Distress' record was hastily assembled. The so-called supergroup of Who Cares actually comprised Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Nicholas Courtney and Anthony Ainley, along with Faith Brown,...
