‘Never Too Late’ (Photo credit: Bradley Patrick).
The launches of the Liam Neeson action drama Honest Thief and Australian ‘geezer’ comedy Never Too Late helped reverse a three-week slide at cinemas last weekend.
But ticket sales remain depressed and the year-to-date national Bo total through Sunday is $334 million, a woeful 67.5 per cent down on last year’s $1.03 billion.
Among the limited releases, Polish drama Corpus Christi posted the weekend’s highest per-screen average while US indie comedy-drama Kajillionaire struggled. The Taika Waititi-produced Kiwi comedy Baby, Done did not resonate either.
Numero reported the top 20 titles generated $2.28 million, 7 per cent up on the previous frame.
The feature writing and directing debut of Ozark co-creator Mark Williams, Honest Thief stole $696,000 on 206 screens and $722,000 with previews for Rialto, in line with the US results where it’s been No. 1 for three weeks in a Covid-19 devastated market.

Antony I. Ginnane.
After 50 years in the business of producing films, Antony I. Ginnane is calling on the screen industry to fight to help the next generation of creatives.
Ginnane slammed key measures of the Federal Government’s media reforms including lowering the Producer Offset for films to 30 per cent and exempting producers’ overheads from the minimum qualifying Australian production expenditure (Qape), coupled with the failure to impose local spending obligations on SVOD services.
“It’s vital that we push back on these changes to film regulations,” he said in a webinar with Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner. “We have to fight to help the next generation so they don’t come in and get screwed from the get-go.”
The producer who has more than 70 screen credits fears many films won’t get made because the ensuing funding gap of 15 per cent – 25 per cent will be impossible to fill.

Four Vietnam vets reunite for a mission, one that will lean on their wartime exploits but also expose more than a few old tensions. No, this is not a revisit of “Da 5 Bloods” but a brief description of the genial, cliché-encumbered, Aussie comedy “Never Too Late.” Directed by Mark Lamprell, it opens in virtual — and a few actual — cinemas nationwide on July 10.
Wily and determined, former special forces soldier Jack Bronson (James Cromwell) arrives at the Hogan Hills Retirement Home for Returned Servicemen and Women looking the worse for wear. He’s in a wheelchair and appears to have had a stroke. The facility’s ramrod director Lin (Renee Lim) admits him. After he’s taken to his new abode, we learn that decrepit act was subterfuge. In his 63 years as a film programmer, Bob Parr had never experienced anything like the current crisis as ticket sales flatlined across the country over the past few weeks.
“All exhibitors and distributors are losing a lot of money,” the Wallis Cinemas consultant told If on Sunday. “Many cinemas have closed because there are no patrons.
“Many small exhibitors make their living in school holidays and barely break even except for blockbusters during the remaining time. They are in the business because they love it.”
Later that day the Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced all cinemas and entertainment venues, registered and licensed clubs, hotels, pubs, casinos and nightclubs will close today.
Exhibitors and distributors had been steeling themselves for that decision after cinemas were shuttered in the Us, the UK and myriad other markets.

Anni Browning accepts the 2017 Spa Award to Film Finances for Best Service and Facilities.
In 22 years with Film Finances Australasia, Anni Browning experienced numerous highs and faced a few challenges as the cinema industry ebbed and flowed.
Browning, who has stepped down as MD of the completion bond company but is still a consultant, supported Rachel Perkins’ debut feature Radiance.
She took one of her biggest risks on a Rolf de Heer movie, which she counts as one of her proudest achievements.
The biggest trend during her time has been the proliferation of low budget films, despite the need to pay crews and allocate reasonable money for post- production. Film Finances bonded a lot of films budgeted at $1 million- $1.5 million and one-off feature docs costing as little as $100,000- $200,000.
One thing which has not remained constant is the insurance bond premium. When she started it was as high as 6 per cent of the budget.

Huw Higginson.
Huw Higginson often plays admirable, upstanding characters but sometimes he gets more of a kick out of tackling villains.
In the past year the English-born actor has portrayed a brutish magistrate in Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale and a serial killer truck driver in Playmaker Media’s Mandarin series Chosen directed by Tony Tilse.
He played more nuanced characters including the abandoned husband and father of Miranda Tapsell’s bride-to-be in Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding; a lawyer who represents the family of a missing priest (Sam Reid) in Lingo Pictures/Foxtel’s drama Lambs of God; and a wealthy gentleman who sends his ward to boarding school in Fremantle/Foxtel’s Picnic at Hanging Rock.

It’s more like sitting in on some well-honed hilarity, and trying not to make a tit of yourself when you try and interject with a question. This is what it felt like when I sat down with Julian Barratt and Simon Farnaby for twenty minutes, in a snazzy central London meeting room, to talk about Mindhorn.

Nearly a dozen bodies — mostly of women — have been found on Gilgo Beach in New York. Are they connected? Subscribe to People now for details of the Long Island Serial Killer, on newsstands now.
He’s the sort of killer who is often social and extremely good at making people feel comfortable. He grooms his victims before he strikes. He takes risks — and sadistic pleasure — in taunting his victim’s family and friends. He probably isn’t a substance abuser.

From Doctor Who and The FiveIsh Doctors to Campion and Button Moon: we chat to the fifth Doctor, Mr Peter Davison...
Ah, the mighty Peter Davison. The Fifth Doctor, All Creatures Great And Small, Campion, and living in a house with Freddy from Rainbow are just some of the topics we chatted to him about, ahead of the publication of his terrific autobiography, Is There Life Outside The Box.
We’ve got a fair bit to get through, so without further ado….
I got a sense you thoroughly enjoyed writing this book, once you were over some initial research-y hurdles. Would that be fair?
Yeah, that’s fair. It was kind of a journey, really. A reassembling. I’ve had these memories, and it was really a chance to put them down on paper and order them. Everything fragments as you get older, and things come out,...

Dennis Waterman has suggested that the funeral of his Minder co-star George Cole will be "horrible but a wonderful celebration".
Cole, who was best known for playing used-car salesman Arthur Daley in the hit ITV comedy-drama opposite Waterman's Terry McCann, passed away at the age of 90 last Thursday (August 6).
Speaking on Good Morning Britain about the late actor, Waterman said: "He was a wonderful man.
"I mean, it's easy to talk [about] him but it's what everybody would say. He was the most loved man in the profession, I would imagine. You won't ever hear anybody say a bad word about George.
"He was a wonderful actor, he had a fantastic career and he stayed the nicest person you could meet."
Waterman recalled: "We met, we sparred a bit together, you know - because we didn't know each other and we hadn't worked together - and then within two or...

Minder star George Cole has died at the age of 90.
The actor was best known for playing used-car salesman Arthur Daley in the hit ITV comedy-drama opposite Dennis Waterman's Terry McCann.
His agent Derek Webster confirmed that he died on Wednesday (August 5) surrounded by his family at Royal Berkshire Hospital, following a short illness.
When once asked what prompted him to accept the iconic role of Arthur, Cole said: "When I read the proposal for Minder, it said Arthur's favourite film was The Godfather, that he was behind the then-Home Secretary as far as law and order were concerned and that he dressed like a dodgy member of a Citizens' Advice Bureau. That made me want to do [it]."
Cole's movie career started in the 1940s, and he appeared opposite Laurence Olivier in his movie version of Henry V in 1944.
After the war, he had the lead role in radio comedy A Life of Bliss,...

Dennis Waterman has admitted 'New Tricks' ''wasn't the same'' without Amanda Redman and Alun Armstrong. The 67-year-old actor has starred in the BBC One comedy-crime-drama since it's first episode in 2013 but he's confessed he didn't enjoy it as much after his co-stars quit the show. He said: ''This is no slight on the new cast, but everything did change really dramatically and suddenly when Amanda and Alun left. ''I'd already signed up for the next season. I did ask Amanda if I'd look sad carrying on after everybody else had quit and she said, 'Don't be daft'. And then my wife started...

Lord Lucan Mystery. Acorn Rlj Entertainment
Kieran Kinsella
Fans of British TV have an enduring fascination with murder mysteries. The most intriguing cases are often based on real events and the brutal murder of Sandra Rivett certainly falls into that category. The identity of the victim herself is often over shadowed by the notoriety surrounding her alleged killer: Lord Lucan. He was never charged with the crime but she was the nanny of his estranged family and was found dead on the very same day that Lucan vanished. The case has never been solved and Lucan’s whereabouts have remained a mystery for the last 40 years. Rumors abound that he continues to evade capture thanks to the aiding and abetting of his high society friends. That said, 81 years on since his birth, the sands of time may catch up with him even if he continues to evade the long arm of the law.

New Tricks is to end after its upcoming 12th series.
The BBC is bringing the long-running crime drama to an end "to make room for new series", Broadcast reports.
In a joint statement, BBC One controller Charlotte Moore and BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson said: "We are incredibly proud of New Tricks and would like to thank Roy Mitchell the brilliant creator, Wall to Wall and Headstrong, and all the cast and teams involved across the 12 series.
"However, on BBC One, it's important to make room for new series and continue to increase the range of drama on the channel, so it won't be returning after the next series airs this summer."
Headstrong Pictures - who are producing the final series - added: "For eleven series, New Tricks has been one of the most enduringly popular dramas on television, and Wall to Wall and Headstrong Pictures are hugely proud of the success of the show.

BBC New Tricks
The popular BBC crime drama New Tricks is set to return for an eleventh season this Fall. At the end of the last season, Tamzin Outhwaite (Eastenders) and Nicholas Lyndhurst (Only Fools and Horses) joined the ensemble cast and they’ll be back for the new season alongside regulars such as Dennis Waterman (Minder) and Denis Lawson. Outhwaite and Lyndhurst will attempt to fill the void left by the departures of Amanda Redman and James Bolam.
With regard to the new arrivals Producer, Tom Mullens, said: “There’s definitely a new dynamic within the team, the format is still the same with three unruly boys running rings around their boss. Tamzin’s character brings something slightly different to the dynamic and so do the guys and there are different relationships to explore between them all.”

By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.

Quite often, TV soundtracks are only mentioned when they're particularly bad. A clunking tune or wobbly composition can turn a beautiful, tense or dramatic TV moment and stink out the whole scene.
But what about the great soundtracks? The ones that make a good moment great. The tunes that give TV shows swagger. Digital Spy has picked out the 10 TV show soundtracks from 2013 that have rocked, helped us get our groove on or made us cry.
1. Peaky Blinders
The Brummie gangster drama, which ended this week, was beautifully shot, brilliantly acted and deliciously dark. The cherry on the top of the flat caps was the soundtrack. Tom Waits, the White Stripes, the Raconteurs and a hefty topping of the brilliant Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

2. Broadchurch
The TV phenomenon of 2013's soundtrack matched its content. Eerie, brimming with drama and totally captivating, the music of Ólafur Arnalds was almost as...

Costume drama lovers are in for a treat as Acorn Media are set to release the 2007 multi-national production of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace on DVD on 24 September. Originally broadcast in France and Belguim, the production has never aired in the U.S. although it was available on Acorn’s streaming service earlier this summer. While there have been many adaptations of this Russian classic, few if any can boast a cast that includes such luminaries as Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Clemence Poesy (Birdsong) and Brenda Blethyn (Vera). The director, Austrian film-maker Robert Dornhelm is no slouch either, having been been behind the lens for hits including the Oscar nominated The Children of Theatre Street.
War and Peace is so long and so impressive that it makes “epics” such as Dr Zhivago look like short children’s stories. It features a colorful cast of...

With all the paparazzi pictures that have appeared of her new film, Taking Stock, you may feel you have already seen it. Still, if it's going to save the industry …
Once again, Lost in Showbiz contemplates paging Jimmy Carr's tax accountant, in search of an urgent explanation for a forthcoming work of British cinema.
I am joking, of course. Admittedly, none of us is yet clear what precise percentage of Britflicks are deliberately conceived as Producers-style calamities, which nonetheless result in millions plopping into various tax-avoiders' bank accounts. But I seek absolutely no explanation for news that Kelly Brook has landed a movie role other than the notion that cinemagoers will gladly pay to see her act.
For Kelly, appearances on the silver screen are second nature. "I can't wait to get back to doing what I love," she informed fans. Which is? "Which is being on set and...

New Tricks Season Nine
New Tricks has become one of the staples of British TV over the last decade and its success is hardly surprising given the quality of the cast. Regulars include Dennis Waterman (Minder), James Bolam (The Beiderbecke Affair) and of course Amanda Redman (Honest). The show is a humorous drama about a group of haggard old cops who are tasked with solving cold cases. The evidence is typically scarce, the witnesses are dead, senile or unwilling to talk and aside from the other obstacles they face, the squad members have to try and get along with each other. When they’re in the mood, the team are quite effective but all too often DS Sandra Pullman (Redman) is forced to bang heads together to get things done.
New Tricks Season Nine starts with the kind of jaw dropping moment that fans of long-running shows dread.

Tamzin Outhwaite is to join BBC One drama New Tricks.
The former EastEnders stars will play Dci Sacha Millard on the long-running crime series.
Outhwaite replaces Amanda Redman as the show's female lead, with the latter's character Sandra Pullman set to depart in the eighth episode of the tenth series.
"I'm delighted to be joining the cast at such an exciting time," said the 42-year-old actress. "I've been a huge fan of the show for years - and can't wait to be working with the amazing cast and crew."
Alun Armstrong will also exit New Tricks in the next run's fourth episode and will be replaced by new cast addition Nicholas Lyndhurst.
Dennis Waterman (Gerry Standing) will remain as the show's sole original cast member.
James Bolam - who played Jack Halford between 2003 and 2012 - was replaced by Denis Lawson in the previous ninth series.

Django Unchained's lead is set to write, direct, executive-produce and star in a new five-part Syfy horror anthology...
Short of writing the theme tune and singing the theme tune (a Little Britain/Dennis Waterman nod for up-to-the-minute reference spotters, there), Jamie Foxx is planning to write, direct, executive produce, and star in a new five-part horror anthology series due to air on Syfy around this Halloween.
Described by Collider as a riff on Tales from the Crypt and The Twilight Zone, the new post-Night Tales Foxxhole project will comprise "truly scary cautionary tales" according to Syfy's President of Original Content, Mark Stern. Anthology horror and sci-fi series are a particular favourite of many around these parts, so we'll certainly be keeping an eye on this one.
