Okay, I get it. The West Wing is a fantasy. But it’s not just a liberal fantasy television series. It is a series that celebrated patriotic Americans who all thought they were working to create a better country. The staffers in the west wing of the White House and their president strove to bring their best efforts, and as we watch, we see them try and fail, we see them try and succeed, and we see them try and not get everything they wanted. There was no breast-beating or pouting on national television.
The 1999-2006 series celebrated patriotism and intelligence, two things lacking from way too many elected officials today, making us long for the Bartlet Administration. Long overdue, Warner Home Entertainment has chosen the show’s 25th anniversary to finally release The West Wing: The Complete Series on Blu-ray.

On September 20, creator Aaron Sorkin, executive producer and director Thomas Schlamme, and some of the cast of “The West Wing,” including the show’s fictional president, Martin Sheen, celebrated the 25th anniversary of their beloved political TV series with a special event at The White House hosted by the First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden. It was part of a reunion lap the show has been having the last few months, both in relation to the upcoming election and the release of “What’s Next: A Backstage Pass to ‘The West Wing'” by co-stars of the show Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack. In reminiscing about the show in a recent interview with The New York Times, Sorkin shared that the timetable for when the show was supposed to be made had to be shifted as a result of a real-life political scandal.

Aaron Sorkin was clearly moved on Friday during his visit to the White House to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “The West Wing” — so much so that it has him pondering a revival of the critically adored political drama.
“If I had an idea, sure,” Sorkin told Variety afterward. “I didn’t think about it seriously, frankly, until today… We’ll see what happens when I wake up tomorrow. But, if you’re asking me now, this is how I feel.”
Sorkin, director/exec producer Thomas Schlamme and stars Martin Sheen, Richard Schiff, Dulé Hill, Janel Moloney, Emily Procter, Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack met with President Joe Biden in the map room, and then were given a personal tour of the building. (President Biden then left for meetings in Delaware.) Later, First Lady Jill Biden held a formal Rose Garden ceremony for the show, held right outside the real-life West Wing and Oval Office.

Cast members of The West Wing emerged from the real Oval Office this afternoon for a White House Rose Garden reception recognizing the NBC show’s 25th anniversary.
Speaking to a couple hundred attendees, First Lady Jill Biden said that President Joe Biden wanted to make sure that “President Bartlet and his staff had a chance to see the Oval Office again,” while she cited the 1999-2006 show’s inspiration to “so many to step forward and serve our country.”
Martin Sheen, who played Bartlet, thanked the first lady for getting the opportunity “to morph once again into the wonderful character that changed my life and lot of the others as well.” He then made a soaring statement from the Rose Garden steps, reiterating an Irish story themed to the idea of “something worth fighting for.”

Christine Lahti had a compelling but tragic arc as Sonya Paxton on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. As a recurring character who was outspoken, not afraid to butt heads with those she disagreed with on both sides of the law, and was part of some iconic scenes, it seems odd that her time on the show was so short.
Between 2009 and 2011, Lahti appeared in just seven episodes, with her character forced off-screen for a period of time while she was in rehab recovering from alcoholism.
Why was Sonya Paxton killed off?
Sonya Paxton was portrayed as a no-nonsense, uncompassionate Ada who unfortunately had a drinking problem. After appearing in court drunk, she was placed under a court order to overcome her addiction before returning to work.
Having restored her reputation and proven that she was still a brilliant prosecutor, she became involved in an old cold case, got attacked by a serial killer,...

Plot: When Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker faces sudden bankruptcy, political and business interests collide as Charlie defends his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace. From Showrunner/ Writer/ Executive Producer David E. Kelley, A Man in Full is based on the New York Times bestselling novel by the late Tom Wolfe.
Review: Jeff Daniels has had a career that includes acclaimed performances on stage in Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird and on the big screen in dozens of dramas, as well as his iconic turn in the Dumb and Dumber films opposite Jim Carrey. To say the actor has a wide range would be an understatement. To follow up his brilliant turn in Sorkin’s HBO series The Newsroom, Daniels headlines the limited Netflix series A Man In Full, which has him channeling the most nefarious antagonist characters he has ever played.

“A Man in Full,” the sprawling Tom Wolfe novel now adapted by screenwriter David E. Kelley into a limited series for Netflix, centers on a protagonist who, for all his resources, can’t bend the world to his will. Over six episodes, the show finds itself in a similar bind. “A Man in Full” boasts an all-star cast, led by Jeff Daniels as Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker; an Oscar-winning multi-hyphenate behind the camera; and a dense lode of source material. But the show ends up far less than the sum of its parts, an oddly generic and muted take on a larger-than-life American story.
Wolfe spent the bulk of his career as a longform journalist before turning to fiction. His first novel, “Bonfire of the Vanities,” was a social satire of 1980s New York that helped define the Wall Street boom’s impact on culture. For his sophomore effort,...

A Man in Full is highly entertaining, which should be no surprise. The series is an adaptation from David E. Kelley, the brilliant mind behind Ally McBeal, Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, and HBO’s Big Little Lies. Kelley has been in the thick of television since the days of Doogie Howser, M.D.
Kelley brings his signature brand of strong characters, a blend of genres, and sharp dialogue that you need to figure out just how deep the cut goes. The bench of actors is deep (and the likes of directors Regina King and Thomas Schlamme) with stars Jeff Daniels and Bill Camp, who turn the whip-smart and clever wordplay into instantly memorable lines that stay with the viewer long after the episode is over.
You wish A Man in Full had taken the time to develop the highly ambitious source material into something that better reflects modern societal dilemmas.

Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane rarely put in anything less than stellar performances, but the Emmy winner and Oscar nominee are rarely as good as they are in Netflix’s adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s A Man in Full.
In a fortnight that has seen the premieres of Hulu’s Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough starring Under the Bridge, the Elisabeth Moss spy thriller FX series Veil, HBO’s The Sympathizer, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize winner and a third season of the still wonderfully wicked Hacks launching today on Max, executive producers Regina King and David E. Kelley have put a real winner on the track for Netflix with A Man in Full.
On any other show, the never better Daniels as a pugnacious Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker on the brink of bankruptcy, and Lane as his revitalized razor-sharp ex-wife Martha would be more than enough of a payoff.

Nearly four years ago, Disney+ attempted to adapt Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff. There’s no reason for you to remember the series — it wasn’t renewed — because it was the one thing a Tom Wolfe adaptation should never be: wholly forgettable.
The innocuously mediocre series served to disabuse me of one of my favorite pet theories — that De Palma’s adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities failed not because of incompatibility between story and storyteller, but because his tapestry lacked sufficient scope. De Palma captured a lot of Wolfe’s literary excess with his camera, but just couldn’t capture the narrative excess in two hours, leading me to hope that someday somebody would do Bonfire as a miniseries (attempts to do just that remain ongoing). But Disney+’s The Right Stuff made it pretty clear that the key to adapting Wolfe is capturing the size and tone of his prose,...

Netflix is throwing a last-minute limited series Emmy contender into the ring with “A Man in Full.” The six-episode drama series premieres May 2, the streaming service announced Wednesday.
The series stars two-time Emmy winner Jeff Daniels as Charlie Croker, an Atlanta real estate mogul facing sudden financial and reputational ruin who has to fend off enemies that, sensing weakness, are coming for his business empire. In a teaser accompanying the date announcement, Croker looks out over the city from a high floor of a skyscraper while he ignores an urgently ringing phone. “I heard once a man reaches a point where he’s older,” he intones in a Southern-accented voiceover. “That ain’t the tragedy. The tragedy is he refuses to recognize it.” Then another voices asks “Mr. Croker, are you ready?”

“They’re Scared”: 5,000-Plus Demonstrators Rally in L.A. to Support Writers Strike, Pressure Studios
Over 5,000 writers and supporters descended on the mid-Wilshire neighborhood of Los Angeles on Wednesday to rally support during the eighth week of the Writers Guild of America labor stoppage.
The “WGA Strong” rally featured spirited and sometimes expletive-filled speeches from the likes of I’m a Virgo writer-director Boots Riley, WGA negotiating committee member Adam Conover and Teamsters Local 399 leader Lindsay Dougherty, as well as a musical performance from singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc (who pointedly sang, at one point, “I Need a Dollar”). The overall message to writers, who are now 51 days into their first strike in 15 years? Hollywood labor is behind you.
The event also served as something of a flex to the industry. “We are out here today to tell the companies how strong we are,” said WGA negotiating committee member Conover (The G Word), who acted as the rally’s emcee. He added, “Carol [Lombardini, the president of the AMPTP] didn’t plan for how strong we are.

Thousands of striking Writers Guild of America members along with other union workers marched in solidarity past the Academy Museum in Los Angeles on Wednesday before staging a rally at the La Brea Tar Pits.
The rally was hosted by WGA board and negotiating committee member Adam Conover, who has become one of the most outspoken voices in the Writers Guild after he called out Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav during a CNN interview on the first day of the strike.
“[AMPTP president] Carol Lombardini did not plan for how strong we are. She did not plan for the fact that eight weeks in, we are bringing the same energy as on Day 1,” Conover said. “She did not plan for our picket lines to include members from every union in town! We are marching with janitors, with housekeepers, with teachers, with strippers! We have union strippers! And that because we know have the same fight.

He urged the studios, via the AMPTP, to get back to the table to negotiate with the writers.
“It would be somewhat disingenuous of me not to be in total support of this guild, since I owe a great deal of my career to the incredible writers that I have been so fortunate to work with,” he said on stage. “It has also been a fucking gift and often a cash cow to the companies that were lucky enough to produce their works, which is why those same companies, after SAG has hopefully wrestled them to the ground and gotten what they deserve,...

“In this new agreement,” DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter told members, “we were able to win many significant advancements, including a number of important industry ‘firsts’ including: essential protections regarding AI, terms and conditions in non-dramatic SVOD programs as well as high-budget AVOD programs, Feature Director compensation for ‘soft prep,’ expanded paid post-production for Episodic Directors, a new foreign streaming residuals structure based on subscribers, and banning live ammunition on sets. The Directors Guild of America’s national board of directors has unanimously approved the tentative agreement reached by the guild’s negotiating committee late Saturday, a deal that aims to set parameters around the use of artificial intelligence and boost streaming residual rates.
With the board’s approval, the contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers will be sent to a ratification vote by DGA membership. The guild expects to send materials to its members this week.
“We set out to negotiate a contract that would build for the future. This is a significant deal with gains for every Director, Assistant Director, Unit Production Manager, Associate Director and Stage Manager,” said DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter. “Our industry is rapidly changing and expanding, and this agreement is what we need to adapt to those changes, break new ground and protect the DGA’s 19,000 directors and directorial team members today,...

"Justified" is one of my favorite shows. It's a slick, satisfying neo-Western that alternates between the semi-procedural adventures of Kentucky Marshall Raylan Givens and a slow-burn plot about bad dads and the thin line between heroism and villainy. It's also, unfortunately, a show whose entire premise – and title – comes from its law enforcement protagonist's ability to take the law into his own hands, shooting criminals as casually as if he were playing target practice with tin cans. "Justified" both interrogates the trigger-happy Western hero archetype and upholds it, and in 2023, it's certainly an understandably tough sell for new viewers.
This is something that series executive producer Dave Andron seems to be acutely aware of. Ahead of the summer release of "Justified: City Primeval," Andron attended a panel about gun violence and media at the Atx television festival in Austin, where /Film's Ryan Scott was also on the scene. The Directors Guild said today that it supports the WGA in its ongoing negotiations for a new film and TV contract. The WGA’s contract expires on May 1, and the DGA will begin bargaining with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for its own contract on May 10. The DGA’s contract expires June 30.
“As the WGA enters the last week of negotiations before its contract expires on May 1, we
support them in their efforts to achieve a fair and reasonable agreement for their members,” the DGA said in a statement. “During this time of significant change for our industry, all the creative talent, artisans,

For seven seasons, audiences tuned in to watch the fictional Bartlet Administration face the pressures of running the office of President of the United States of America in "The West Wing." Created by Aaron Sorkin, the series ran from 1999 to 2006 on NBC and followed President Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and his dedicated staff as they overcame crises on a domestic and global scale while maintaining public support. Widely acclaimed across its entire run, "The West Wing" was nominated for a staggering 95 Primetime Emmys and ultimately won 26, including a nomination for its 2021 reunion special.
Praised for its frank tackling of real-world issues and its idealistic depiction of a liberal-oriented federal government functioning relatively free of cynicism, "The West Wing" is still one of the most highly influential political dramas on television. However, with creative shake-ups behind-the-scenes and several longstanding storylines that didn't quite click, not every season is as sterling as its superior counterparts.

Despite its often idealistic portrayal of the White House, "The West Wing" is still the gold standard for a fictional Presidential administration. Aaron Sorkin's political drama is known for its snappy, long-running dialogue, though the excellent cast helped lift it all off the ground. Martin Sheen, in particular, thrived as President Joseph Bartlet, a force of nature in the series best characterized by his earnestness. The quintessential President, Sheen embodied every aspect you would expect from the leader of the nation. Indeed, it was because of his imposing qualities that "The West Wing" make certain not to overuse him.
Although he's a consistent presence throughout the show, it was clear from the first episode that President Bartlet was simply one part of a bigger machine. In the pilot, President Bartlet remained largely absent, mainly due to his bike accident. But when Bartlet did appear, he gave a long speech to his staff,...

Hailing from Aaron Sorkin, "The West Wing" is the epitome of the ideal, fictional White House. Every imitation pales in comparison, not for lack of trying. The political drama features an all-star cast spearheaded by Martin Sheen as President Josiah Bartlet, and scripts that sing thanks to the rapid-fire dialogue. The witty, likable characters that make up the administration might be a bit too far-fetched in today's world, but "The West Wing" is a prime example of some worthy escapism. And there is nothing that exemplifies that more than the famous walk-and-talk scenes, of course.
The snappy dialogue often identified with the series creator is aptly glued together by director Thomas Schlamme's penchant for long takes and use of the Steadicam. Each main character gets some time in the spotlight during these extensive sequences, also serving as a seamless transition between scenes. It works so well that the walking-while-talking...

DGA leaders have told their members that the guild’s upcoming contract talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers “will not be an ordinary negotiation” and that “if necessary, we are prepared for a fight.”

The DGA’s current contract expires June 30, and no date has been set for the start of negotiations.
The DGA has only struck the industry once in its entire history – back in 1987. That strike only lasted 15 minutes on the West Coast, and for three hours and 15 minutes on the East Coast, before a deal was reached.

There are 136 submissions on the 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Directing, which will yield six nominations. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Queen’s Gambit” (Scott Frank), while the other nominees were “Hamilton” (Thomas Kail), “Mare of Easttown” (Craig Zobel), “Wandavision” (Matt Shakman), “The Underground Railroad” (Barry Jenkins) and two episodes of “I May Destroy You” (Sam Miller for “Eyes Eyes Eyes Eyes” and Miller and Michaela Coel for “Ego Death”).
For six of the last eight years, the Best Limited/Movie Directing category has rewarded directors who helmed the entirety of their limited series. That could work in favor of Mike White, who directed all six episodes of “The White Lotus,” which should have enough overall support to be competitive in the series category. That could work in favor of Mike White, who directed all six episodes of “The White Lotus,” which should have enough overall support to be competitive in the series category. Miniseries that also only submitted their sole director for the whole series, per the Emmy ruling, include “Gaslit” for Matt Ross,...

The end is in sight for FX’s critically acclaimed drama series Snowfall. The network has renewed the series, co-created by the late John Singleton, for a sixth and final season.
The renewal comes a little more than midway through Season 5, which is pacing as the series most-watched season ever, according to Nielsen and FX, up 6 from the equivalized first six episodes of Season 4 and +55 from Season 3. Season 3 did not air next day on Hulu.
“FX first partnered with legendary writer/director John Singleton and the rest of the creative team six years ago to pursue their vision for an ambitious, powerful drama about the explosion of the crack epidemic of the early 80s,” said Nick Grad, President, Original Programming. “Today, as the fifth season of Snowfall reaches new heights of acclaim and viewership, there is no question that this series has become an FX classic drama. When the Directors Guild of America’s annual awards gets underway March 12, there will be a number of changes from years previous. Most obviously, the ceremony will finally be held in person at the Beverly Hilton, after two straight years of virtual celebrations. But just as importantly, it will also be the DGA’s first awards gala under new president Lesli Linka Glatter, who succeeded two-term president Thomas Schlamme last September.
A multiple Emmy- and DGA Award-nominated television veteran, Glatter is best known for her work as a director of “Homeland,” “Twin Peaks,” “Mad Men” and “The West Wing,” as well as the cult coming-of-age feature “Now and Then.” She’s also a veteran of the DGA itself, having served as the guild’s vice president and been a three-time member of its negotiating team, as well as heading up a number of its diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Clearly, she maintains a crowded schedule,...

FX’s Snowfall started off its fifth season strong, hitting series highs with its two-episode debut.
On Wednesday, FX revealed that Snowfall averaged 4.3 million Total Viewers across linear, VOD and streaming with its Feb. 23 premiere, marking the series’ most-watched season to date. The latest total viewer count was up 13% from the previous season and 43% up from Season 3. Snowfall Season 4 was FX’s most-watched series of 2021.
Season 5 of Snowfall is set in the summer of 1986. Franklin Saint (Damson Idris) and his entire family are rich beyond their wildest dreams, on the verge of having everything they’ve ever wanted…right as the ground begins to fall out from under their feet.
The sudden and tragic death of basketball star Len Bias makes the rock cocaine epidemic front-page news, the target of both Democrat and Republican lawmakers. Law enforcement is on a warpath and the militarization of the L.A.P.D.
