The Descent director Neil Marshall returns with action thriller Duchess, starring Charlotte Kirk. Here’s the first trailer for the movie.
Neil Marshall made his name with a string of successful horror films like Dog Soldiers and The Descent. The latter is often considered one of the best, most terrifying horror films of the 2000s. Marshall was only involved with the sequel as an executive producer, though.
He then ventured into science fiction with 2008’s Doomsday followed by historical adventure Centurion. While he found little success with the 2019 reboot of Hellboy, he returned to his roots for the last couple of films, including 2020’s The Reckoning and 2022’s The Lair. He has also pivoted to the small screen in recent years, directing episodes of Hannibal, Westworld, Timeless and Lost In Space.
Now, he turns his hand to action with Duchess. The synopsis reads as follows:

A young crook known as Duchess (Charlotte Kirk) gets involved with the nefarious Robert (Phillip Winchester) and the underworld of diamond trafficking. Her wrong turns take her halfway across the world, and she ends up being left for dead when a deal quickly goes wrong. Duchess is quick to try and seek retribution, and that means taking everyone on.
The good thing — “thing,” not “things” — about Duchess is even just by watching the trailer, seeing a poster, or reading the cast list, you know exactly what type of movie you’re going to get. Unfortunately, that type is fairly unsavoury. Forget any Guy Ritchie film, Fight Club, or Layer Cake, this time, it’s never been a worse thing to be British. Charlotte Kirk put herself on the map with Vice alongside Bruce Willis and Thomas Jane and has since starred in the likes of No Panic with a Hint of Hysteria, Ocean's 8, and The Juice.
She's also co-written, produced, and starred in Neil Marshall's The Reckoning and The Lair and now reteams with the filmmaker for Duchess, an action-packed new British action-crime thriller also starring Colm Meaney, Sean Pertwee, Stephanie Beacham, and Philip Winchester.
We recently spoke to Kirk and asked about creating Scarlett, a.k.a. The Duchess. "As a writer/producer, I sat down with my co-writer/director Neil Marshall...we've done two films previously and were like, 'What do you want to do next.' We wanted to do a really cool gangster movie and it came really organically," she explains in the video below.

London pickpocket Scarlett pulls herself up by the bootstraps after catching the eye of smuggler Robert. He brings her into his flashy criminal world, but his operation comes with risks. When betrayal leaves Scarlett dead in the desert, she rebounds from the ashes like a true phoenix. Now going by Duchess, she aims to avenge Robert with the help of loyal associates Danny and Baraka.
But does director Neil Marshall’s throwback to vintage British gangster flicks hit the mark? The flashy style nods to greats like Guy Ritchie, yet the thin plot and flat characters struggle to rise above the formula. We get a busy introduction over exposition instead of seeing Scarlett’s fire sparked onscreen. The sluggish pace waits an hour to truly ignite the vengeance action fans crave.
Still, Marshall shows flashes of his early magic. Ferocious lead Charlotte Kirk drives thrilling violence and black comedy beats.

A heroine who looks good in Lycra and a love interest with no chemistry don’t leave you wanting more, despite Duchess’s sequel-friendly ending
So derivative that it almost qualifies as a type of financial instrument, this crime thriller is clearly investing in its own future as a low-budget franchise, given how sequel-friendly it leaves the conclusion. Much will depend on whether viewers take to its titular heroine, scrappy Londoner Scarlett Monaghan (Charlotte Kirk). Our leggy heroine graduates from minor crimes such as pickpocketing drunks to more advanced forms of larceny when she hooks up with mid-level gangster Robert (Philip Winchester), whom she describes in voiceover as the love of her life. That assertion isn’t all that convincing given how little chemistry there is between the two leads, but who are we to question the feelings of fictional characters?
At least there is no need to ponder too...

Director Neil Marshall made one of the all-time coolest werewolf movies with his 2002 film Dog Soldiers (watch it Here), so it’s shocking that we’ve never gotten a sequel… especially considering we’re living in a world where An American Werewolf in Paris exists, and there have been eight Howling movies. A few years ago, Marshall said there was “more of a chance” of the sequel happening than ever before… but in a new interview with Inverse, he gave a disappointing update, saying he fears that Dog Soldiers 2 is dead in the water.
When asked for a status update on Dog Soldiers 2, Marshall told Inverse, “I’ve a feeling it’s probably dead in the water because things have gone very quiet from the other side. I’m not giving up, though; there’s still a possibility. We’ve been trying to get it off the ground for the past six years.

After a relatively sparse decade of werewolf cinema, the early 2000s unleashed a new wave of fur, fangs and bone-breaking transformations. Ginger Snaps was ahead of the curve, especially considering how it approached the same old ideas but in a fresh way. Nevertheless, Dog Soldiers was also bracing and innovative; Neil Marshall delivered a high-concept actioner bristling with colorful characters, entertaining melee, and, of course, ferocious lycans so dissimilar from prior celluloid renderings. While not exactly the first of its kind — Full Eclipse crossed genres back in the ’90s — Dog Soldiers did lead this sudden charge of hyper-violent and stylized werewolf films.
In spite of the saturation of American werewolves, these creatures can go wherever storytellers please. Marshall, perhaps inspired by England’s enduring Beast of Bodmin legend, created vague fakelore for his film’s scenic setting; the tranquil Scottish Highlands were really the hunting grounds for an old family of uncanny predators.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: It’s the Sagrada Familia of Shitty Horror Movies
“Oh, this is your Sagrada Familia,” IndieWire’s Christian Zilko said to me as the credits of “Event Horizon” rolled, tears from laughter still streaming down my face. “You’re like one of those architecture nerds who think it’s more beautiful because it’s unfinished.”
Much like the semi-sentient spaceship in Paul W. S. Anderson’s magnificently misguided horror flick from 1997, Zilko knows me so well that I’m occasionally startled by his insights into my cinematic soul. That...

Director Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner was written by Hampton Fancher and David Webb Peoples, based on the Philip K. Dick story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – and when director Paul W.S. Anderson brought Peoples’ sci-fi action script Soldier to the screen sixteen years later, he and his crew added in references that set the story within the universe of Blade Runner. But during an interview with author Danny Stewart for the book Soldier: From Script to Screen (pick up a copy on Amazon), Peoples revealed that he had never intended for Soldier to be connected to Blade Runner.
When asked if he wrote Soldier as a “side-quel” to Blade Runner that was set in the same universe, Peoples answered, “No, I never had any thoughts about that.” The screenwriter went on to reveal, “I wrote Soldier in 1984. Very quickly on my own. I wrote it because...

Soldier: From Script to Screen

144 pages/BearManor Media/$32 (hardcover) $22 (softcover)
Everyone has their passion, whether it is universally acclaimed or not. Thankfully, BearManor Media provides an outlet for their authors to share that unique passion with those who also find the subject matter of interest.
Here, Danny Stewart delves into the 1998 film Solider, which came and went with little notice when Universe released it. Despite some marquee names making the film, it opened to poor reviews (in addition to 15% at Rotten Tomatoes) and dismal box office, earning a mere $14.6 million against a $60 million budget.
It’s justifiable if you don’t recall or never heard of the film. It was based on a script by the noted screenwriter David Webb Peoples, best known for Blade Runner. Some even call the film a “sidequel” to that classic. Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson (best known for the Resident Evil...

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering Dog Soldiers was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
A group of well-trained soldiers are dropped into the wilderness. Where they start getting picked off by a mysterious attacker. It quickly becomes apparent that their enemy is some kind of monstrous creature. And the weapons they have aren’t so effective when the target isn’t human. This sounds like a description of Predator – but it’s actually Dog Soldiers (watch it Here). Which is one of the coolest werewolf movies ever made, and The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Neil Marshall knew from an early age that he wanted to be a filmmaker. Raised on the classics from the ‘70s and ‘80s, he was especially fond of horror. The films of John Carpenter,...

Back in 1998, the legendary Kurt Russell teamed up with Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson for a sci-fi action movie called Soldier – which is considered to be set in the same world as Blade Runner, and also shared screenwriter David Webb Peoples with that Ridley Scott classic. But Soldier came and went without many movie-goers noticing, sputtering out with just $14.6 million at the domestic box office. It has earned some fans over the years, like JoBlo’s own Jake Dee (who wrote about Soldier for the Black Sheep series)… and now author Danny Stewart has put together the book Soldier: From Script to Screen to pay tribute to the film, dig into the story of its production, and try to draw in some new fans.

Joe Goldberg is out of his element in the official trailer for You Season 4.
Netflix unveiled the trailer on Monday morning, and the series embraces change as Joe moves to London.
Unfortunately, he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery in which it looks like he's being stalked.
We've witnessed Joe stalk his way through three seasons of the juggernaut, but now, the show is on the other foot.
"After his previous life went up in flames, Joe Goldberg has fled to Europe to escape his "messy" past, adopt a new identity, and, of course, to pursue true love," Netflix teases.
"But Joe soon finds himself in the strange new role of reluctant detective as he discovers he may not be the only killer in London."
"Now, his future depends on identifying and stopping whoever's targeting his new friend group of uber-wealthy socialites…"
It's a compelling hook and one that helps reinvigorate the series.
