Remakes are nothing new. They made up like 98% of the horror output through the 2000s, and though they have slowed to allow room for other types of storytelling (legacy sequels remain the current hotness), they are still very much a part of the horror landscape. The standard remakes are really no-brainers—a film reaches a certain age and the studio might want to breathe new life into it for an opportune release. Or maybe a director has a particular vision or a way to spin it for a more modern audience. And of course, foreign films are often remade in the US to make them more appealing to an American audience. Earlier this year, brand new production and distribution company Welcome Villain Films launched with “an expanded reimagining” of 2014’s Last Shift in the works. Today, Last Shift announced its lead and a tease of what to expect.

Split actress Jessica Sula (“Scream: The TV Series”) will star in director Anthony Diblasi’s reimagining of his 2014 chiller.

Sula will play “a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station. She hopes to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult, but throughout the night she’s thwarted by terrifying supernatural events that connect to her family’s twisted past.”

The untitled reboot has wrapped production, with post-production expected to finish this fall for a planned 2023 release.

Errol Morris’ “Wormwood,” a six-part nonfiction series for Netflix, investigates what really happened to Frank Olson, a biological warfare scientist working for the CIA who supposedly jumped out the window of a New York hotel (room 1018A) in 1953. It’s a mystery that spans 60 years of history of the CIA and is often told through personal lens of his son Eric Olsen who, now in his early seventies, is still determined to discover the truth of his father’s death.

“This is not, in any sense, a live action, vérité account of something that is transpiring in front of the camera,” Morris said in an interview with IndieWire. “The camera is trying to bore into the past, into history, is trying to discover what did happen using all of the tools that we have at our disposal.”

Netflix is continuing its diversification into audio mediums. The streaming giant has just launched a companion podcast for its latest true crime docuseries, the Errol Morris-directed Wormwood, which explores the mysterious death of a U.S. scientist in a secret Cold War mind-control program known as Mk-Ultra.

The podcast, launched last Friday, digs deeper into the unsolved case -- beyond the six episodes that launched on Netflix earlier this month, New York reports. It will feature appearances by Morris, Eric Olson (whose father, Frank, is at the center of the case), conspiracy expert Jon Ronson, and the actor Peter Sarsgaard (who stars in the docuseries as Frank in reenacted scenes). A total of three episodes are currently available for download on iTunes.

In hindsight, it was probably inevitable that Errol Morris would contribute to the abundance of true crime we’ve been experiencing these last few years.
