We still don’t know who’s directing the next James Bond film, so of course why not throw Martin Campbell’s name into the mix….
Believe the rumours and Eon Productions is finally starting to nail down some key personnel for its next James Bond movie. It’s been three years pretty much since No Time To Die landed in cinemas, and since then, there’s been precious little obvious movement on James Bond 26. We certainly don’t know who the next 007 is going to be, although Aaron Taylor-Johnson is currently the running favourite to succeed Daniel Craig. Yet there are now reports that a director appointment is imminent.
Over the last few years, we’ve had rumours of Christopher Nolan, Yann Demange and Bart Layton being considered, and one or two of them may still be under consideration. You can cross Nolan off your scorecard, mind.

When you think of the DC live-action universe, Swamp Thing might not be the first thing that comes to your mind. Sitting somewhere in the back of our minds, Gary Dauberman’s show seems like a distant memory at best. Of course, its tragic fate in the superhero universe might have had something to do with this.

Shortly after its premiere, Swamp Thing was pulled off the stage and canceled before the rest of its episodes were released. Fans have still not forgotten the ill-treatment of the show and are calling DC out for giving up on it so easily and leaving the audience begging for more, especially as they reminisce on one iconic scene from the pilot episode.

Jon Watts’s Spider-Man films were like no other. With the ever-changing public opinion and the approach that the franchise took with the character, there is no denying that fans who did not see Tom Holland as the right fit for the role were forced to have this realization upon the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The film was legendary in many ways, setting many new records and being a moment in time that fans will continue to cherish. Josh Hartnett played the role of nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. He starred alongside Matt Damon in the film, who gave him advice on how to approach the role. Damon played Lt. General Leslie Groves in the film. The only problem was the advice turned out to be completely unhelpful for the Pearl Harbor actor.

Time, space and mortality work to no earthly schedule in the half-lit, hand-made twilight world of “Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass” — so it’s appropriate that this vertiginous stop-motion vision seems to operate by temporal laws of its own. The first feature film in nearly 20 years from cult animators the Quay Brothers runs just 76 minutes, though in the process of watching it, it feels both infinitely longer than that and over in the blink of an eye, like a dream of epic proportions that you forget seconds after waking. This dark, densely nested fairytale of life, death and what comes in between is inspired by the writings of Polish literary titan Bruno Schulz, but with entirely its own collapsing, free-form model of storytelling — driven less by logic than intuitive feeling and ambience, which is where the Quays’ distinctively ethereal visuals come in.

The Batman universe has seen numerous adaptations over the years, each bringing its own flavor to the Caped Crusader’s storied saga. While Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, particularly Batman Begins, set a new standard for superhero cinema, Matt Reeves’ The Batman also opened to starkly positive reviews back in 2022.

Starring Robert Pattinson, the movie set up a new reboot and starred Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, and Jeffrey Wright as the fan-favorite James Gordon. Now however, in what might be a slightly unnecessary debate, fans began comparing the two origin stories, with quite a few claiming that Batman Begins does not hold a candle to Pattinson’s 2022 remake.
Of course, there were plenty who think otherwise as well.
Fans have chosen between Batman Begins and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman

Daniel Craig’s stellar run as James Bond came to an end with the 2021 movie, No Time To Die. Starting from 2006’s Casino Royale, Craig has established himself as one of the best iterations of the character seen to date. Now, with Eon Productions looking for a replacement, all eyes are on the studio as they attempt to finalize the creatives that will be behind the upcoming movie.

For a long while, legendary director Christopher Nolan had been earmarked as the ideal choice. However, that seems to have changed for the time being, with the producers reportedly looking for a more traditional approach, and a “safe and seasoned pair of hands” to ensure the franchise’s continuity without overshadowing Bond’s character with a distinct directorial style.

What do you get when you mix a genius storyteller (who has an aversion to streaming services) and nearly a billion-dollar box office smash hit? The answer is, of course, Christopher Nolan, the Hollywood juggernaut who continues to paint the cinematic landscape with his visionary, in-your-face style.

Yes, he has been a Hollywood heavyweight for over two decades now, but 2023 might just be his piece de résistance. His latest brainchild, Oppenheimer, has not only basked in critical acclaim but also last year’s third-highest-grossing movie!
As we all know, Nolan is a cinephile who champions the traditional theatrical experience over digital streaming, proudly proclaiming it’s important to own a physical copy of a movie. “We’re not a tech company”, he reportedly said, likening his dedication to quality storytelling to the consistent excellence of Heinz ketchup. Who knew comparing movies to condiments could be so perfect?...

Jon Watts only had two indie films under his name before directing the big-budget Spider-Man flicks for the MCU. He gave one of the most significant post-Endgame MCU releases with Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Tom Holland film almost collected $2 billion worldwide. But, despite such success, the director denied leading Spider-Man 4 due to a major creative reason.

After the success of No Way Home, Jon Watts was eyed to helm Spider-Man 4 as well as The Fantastic Four. But soon, the director announced his exit from both projects and asserted that he wanted to do something on his own, outside Marvel. As a result, Watts went on to make the film, Wolfs for Apple TV+.

Jon Watts cut his teeth on indie movies like Clown and Cop Car, but his big break came when Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures tapped him to helm 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
He'd later return for Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), with the latter presenting more than its fair share of challenges thanks to the pandemic. Still, the threequel was a massive hit and Watts was announced as the director of The Fantastic Four, only to walk away from the project months later.
Now, the untitled Spider-Man 4 - which is expected to be released between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars - finds itself without a director because Watts will not return to helm the wall-crawler's next adventure.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker broke his silence on moving on from the MCU by admitting he's all too aware that following Spider-Man: No Way Home will be near impossible.

Thanks to his work on Spider-Man’s ‘Home’ trilogy, Jon Watts became a key figure in the MCU, credited with some of the franchise’s highest-grossing and most successful films. Watts infused the Spider-Man movies with a youthful, high school-focused tone, setting them apart from other superhero films.
This approach resonated strongly with both critics and audiences. In No Way Home, he successfully navigated the challenge of integrating Spider-Man into the Multiverse, delivering an exceptional and well-received film.
Watts was initially approached to direct Fantastic Four: First Steps but ultimately chose to step away not only from that project but also from the Spider-Man franchise. As Spider-Man 4 searches for a new director, Watts is focusing on his upcoming film, Wolfs, which stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney as rival “fixers.”
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Watts shared why he left the MCU and how Wolfs aligns better with his creative vision.

Largely due to the Spider-Man’s ‘Home’ trilogy, Jon Watts was one of the most important directors in the MCU, being credited for some of the highest-grossing and successful movies in the franchise.
Watts brought a youthful, high school-centric tone to the ‘Spider-Man’ films, which differentiated them from other superhero movies. This approach paid off well with both critics and audiences. With ‘No Way Home’ he had a gargantuan task of having Spidey join the Multiverse and thrive in it, and boy did he do it well.
Now Watts was also approached to handle the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ but the director eventually decided to walk away not only from ‘Fantastic Four’ but from ‘Spider-Man’ franchise as well. The upcoming ‘Spider-Man 4’ is currently looking for a director while Jon Watts is focusing on his upcoming movie ‘Wolfs’ a story about two “fixers” starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

At first glance, there doesn’t seem to be much common cause between Pablo Larraín’s anticipated Maria Callas biopic, “Maria,” starring Angelina Jolie as the titular opera singer, and Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” a 215-minute epic about a Holocaust survivor forging a new life in America. Though both films will premiere on the Lido at this year’s Venice Film Festival, where they’re competing for the Golden Lion, they are in most ways worlds apart.

In December 2021, Jon Watts found himself standing in the back of the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard on the opening night of his last film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The entry was one of the first major studio theatrical releases following the pandemic shutdown, and the audience was standing, screaming, crying and generally carrying on in a way that, even for the first showing of a fan-favorite superhero movie, was a spectacle all to itself.
“That was such a specific moment in time, and the reaction to that movie was just so unbelievable,” remembers Watts. It was at this point that the director came to the realization: “It’s never going to be like this, ever again.”
No Way Home went on to gross nearly $2 billion at the global box office, the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time and one of the top Marvel movies, trailing only the last two Avengers films.

Tim Burton is one of those directors that even the average person who has been alive on this planet for at least 20 years assuredly knows. He's got that Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan level of recognition. He's in many ways a movie star unto himself, even though he's never really on screen. Yet, his distinctive, gothic-influenced, macabre, funhouse style is unmistakable. If someone calls a movie Burton-esque, it's hard not to get a good idea of what's in store. That Burton-esque quality fully revealed itself for the first time in 1988 when "Beetlejuice" hit theaters.

For nearly 20 years, Zoe Saldaña has starred in some of the most financially successful films in history, including “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame.” You’d think an actress with such an impressive résumé would have scripts and prominent roles constantly coming her way. Yet, in Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” where Saldaña plays Rita Moro Castro, she sings and dances, and in one high-energy number, “El Mal,” she shows the ferocity that shows the depth of her talent. It was a moment that left me incredibly frustrated with Hollywood. Despite her box office success, Saldaña has rarely been allowed to showcase the full range of her abilities. Why are we only learning about this now?

Rotten Tomato scores may not say everything, but they can certainly tell you a lot. For better or worse (mostly worse), the entertainment rating site (which is all Roger Ebert's fault) is seen as a status symbol for success and failure in modern cinema. You can use it to see which Christopher Nolan films are the best of the bunch or use it as proof that E.T. is still Spielberg's best movie 40 years after its release. You can also use Rotten Tomatoes to compare an ongoing series from one season to the next. Case in point: Prime Video's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."
Season 1 of that serialized Middle-earth blockbuster rolled out to decidedly mixed feelings from both the diehard and fair-weather elements of Tolkien fandom. Those opposed were so intense in their reactions that Amazon delayed reviews on its own streaming platform to combat trolls.

Imagine a Batman movie unlike any other – a daring, standalone cinematic adventure that sought to redefine the iconic Dark Knight. This was the vision Ben Affleck had before reluctantly stepping away from the cape and cowl. This is the tale of the Ben Affleck-helmed Bat-project that tantalizingly never came to be.
Affleck’s planned film was an immersive, groundbreaking character study steeped in brooding Gothic ambiance. Rather than a conventional superhero spectacle, his story would intimately explore the gritty underbelly of Bruce Wayne, who was pushing fifty and facing the twilight years of his crimefighting career. The central antagonist was to be Deathstroke, with Affleck drawing inspiration from revered Batman comics to craft a plot he described as an enthralling “detective story” for the World’s Greatest Detective.

70mm is back! Thanks to Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan, one of the oldest and grandest traditions in Hollywood is making a comeback after years of financial setbacks and near-extinction. As Nolan has said many times, shooting in 70mm proved an immersive and more textured experience than any other form of cinema.
Due to the costly nature of film and theaters’ lack of 70mm projectors, it’s been quite a challenge to get to a place where Tarantino and Nolan can make entire features using 65/70mm, but the preservation of film is turning in their favor.
Below, we’ve gathered 20 of the most essential 70mm film releases. From Stanley Kubrick to William Wyler and David Lean, it’s clear shooting in 70mm is mandatory for any epic filmmaker.

Grab your flat caps, lads – Peaky Blinders is back, now in movie-length form. And befitting the leap from the small screen to the, erm, well, small screen just with a longer runtime (this one’s a Netflix production), the feature film is gathering some major names. It wouldn’t be Peaky without Cillian Murphy, who is of course back as Tommy Shelby – and we recently learned, too, that Rebecca Ferguson would be entering the fray this time. Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the finest directors in the industry and proved his worth with only a few films over the last two and a half decades. Anderson’s psychological dramas have starred the likes of Tom Cruise, Daniel Day-Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. In his new project, he has collaborated with Leonardo DiCaprio.

However, there’s one actor whom the director wished to work with. Even after two decades of expressing his interest in working with the great Robert De Niro, Anderson has yet to find a project for the 81-year-old actor. De Niro is actively doing roles in films and television, with his next projects being Alto Knights and Netflix’s Zero Day.

James Gunn is gearing up to start his DC Universe, first with this year's animated show "Creature Commandos" — which will hopefully overcome the limitations of corporate synergy to deliver something unique and visually interesting — and then with the cleanly titled "Superman" in 2025. So far, Gunn has been doing his best to reassure fans that his take on the DC mythos will be respectful to every aspect of the comics — the uplifting, the heartwarming, the funny, the weird, and the silly alike. He's bringing back Jimmy Olsen, while the new Superman suit looks like his mom made it (and even includes the iconic red trunks). Elsewhere, the DC Universe's take on Batman will finally introduce the Bat-family to the big screen in live-action.

“In space, no one can hear you scream… your girlfriend’s name,” would be a good tagline for Slingshot, a psychological sci-fi thriller about an astronaut suffering major romantic withdrawal during a voyage to Saturn’s largest moon, Titan.
Starring Casey Affleck and directed by Mikael Håfström, the film plays at times as both an intimate, low-key riff on Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, and a variation of James Gray’s Ad Astra. But it’s ultimately neither of those movies, opting for lots of narrative red herrings and plot twists instead of celestial wonders or emotional climaxes. The result feels more like a B-grade thriller that’s been elevated by a good cast and a script with some clever moves — which should help Slingshot land smoothly on streamers after a theatrical release.

Matt Damon was having a difficult time coming up with a way to continue the Bourne films after the original trilogy. So he took his ideas for a potential sequel to Christopher Nolan’s brother Jonathan, who gave Damon his honest opinion on the franchise’s future.

Even after The Bourne Ultimatum, Damon was curious about doing another movie featuring the action hero. But he wasn’t sure how a new Bourne film could be done given the finale of the original trilogy. Much of the first three movies followed Jason Bourne slowly uncovering new layers of his past that he couldn’t remember. Ultimatum saw the character recovering all of his lost memories, giving a fitting conclusion to the overall story. It was wrapped up so tightly that Damon wasn’t...

Universal’s movie adaptation of the hit musical “Wicked” is flying into theatres this year and brings with it a flurry of stars including Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh. But those stars aren’t the only ones who may shine bright in the film as the movie’s trailer displayed a dazzling array of designs that could mean it’s set for Oscar attention. In particular, it could be a key player for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Paul Tazewell is on costuming duty here. He was nominated for Best Costume Design in 2022 for another musical, “West Side Story.” Although he lost to Jenny Beavan for “Cruella,” musicals are often nominated in this category. Along with “West Side Story,” movie musicals such as “Cyrano,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “La La Land,” “Cinderella,” and “Into the Woods” have...

Stanley Kubrick's 1964 classic "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" remained depressingly relevant. We live on a planet wherein humans have invented single explosive devices powerful enough to eliminate all life on Earth, and yet they are being handled by whiny, insecure, clownish politicians and violence-obsessed military wonks with impotence and delusions of grandeur. It's telling that one of the biggest hits of 2023, Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," was also about how petty egos tend to take precedence over the profound immoral invention of the nuclear bomb.
1964 was a time when phrases like "balance of power" were bandied about in the news, all while politicians and pundits argued about the moral righteousness of every major global superpower possessing the ability to destroy the world with equal skill. If everyone on Earth can blow up the planet, surely, then, everything is in perfect balance.

When it comes to raking in the big bucks, Robert Pattinson’s net worth in 2024 is as stratospheric as his famously tousled hair ever could be. The British heartthrob made his mark in the Harry Potter film series and then took over the world by playing Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga.
His foray into offbeat roles—a term he humorously embraces—has paid off handsomely, leading to his engagements in landmark films like Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending Tenet and donning the cape as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. From dating tabloid darling Kristen Stewart—a relationship that spectacularly fizzled out—to tackling one spine-tingling role after another, Pattinson has climbed the ladder of success.

Actor Josh Hartnett has been around for quite awhile, breaking hearts as a teenager in films like "The Faculty" before going on to have a prolific career with quite a bit of range. One might imagine that because of that amount of experience, he's heard every bit of acting advice out there. However, it turns out that Matt Damon had some new advice for him when they worked together on Christopher Nolan's historical drama "Oppenheimer," and it came at the worst time possible.
While on "The Tonight Show" (via Entertainment Weekly), Hartnett shared a story about filming with Damon and revealed that the "Good Will Hunting" actor had some advice that came a bit too late, which made it pretty darn moot. Thankfully, he said that Damon also gave him plenty of great acting advice and that he learned a lot from their time working together -- except, again,...

In a film where character depth is paramount, even the acclaimed actor like Dustin Hoffman found himself struggling with one sequence.

This article contains spoilers for both versions of The Crow.
The Crow (1994) is one of those seminal touchstones that help define a generation. Gothic, mournful, and haunted by the nigh literal ghost of Brandon Lee, every frame of the film can feel like it’s projected from another world. So it has always been a bit of a mystery why anyone would dare remake the cult classic, including in the mind of the original’s director, Alex Proyas. When it comes to iconic directors, no superhero franchise has had more top-tier directors than the Dark Knight.
Over the years, DC has managed to lure in some of the most talented directors in the game to oversee its many Batman movies with the likes of Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton, Matt Reeves, and Zack Snyder all lending their talents and visions to help bring Batman to the big screen.
These directors are responsible for some of the greatest superhero movies in the entire genre, each bringing their own unique style to create unique worlds and spins on the iconic characters from DC Comics. While there have been some misses along the way, the Batman movies are some of the most talked about and beloved films in the superhero genre and have given DC some of their biggest hits at the box office over the years.

The work of British filmmaker Christopher Nolan, past and recent, merits even greater appreciation when compared to Chinese director Chen Sicheng’s ambitious but saccharine and mostly dull “Decoded,” an adaptation of the 2002 novel of the same name by Mai Jia. This cradle-to-grave portrait of fictional character Rong Jinzhen (Haoran Liu), a prodigious orphan turned valuable government asset in the 1940s, chronicles how his unique skillset ultimately helped clear the path for China to establish its own nuclear weapons program.
While the magnitude of his task and its global repercussions might immediately induce comparisons to Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” if one takes “Decoded” as “China’s answer” to the recent best picture Oscar winner, the moniker must come with the caveat that this means it’s a toothless film as it relates to moral ambiguity. It’s not a dissident work of art made to question the pursuit of such armament,...

Jennifer Lawrence’s ex-flame and the mastermind behind Black Swan, Darren Aronofsky, once toyed with bringing his own dark vision to Gotham. Per the American filmmaker himself, his take on Batman would’ve been oh so gritty than Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy. Pretty hard to imagine, right?

As she accepted the Democratic nomination Thursday night, Kamala Harris played up her attorney-general past. “As a prosecutor, when I had a case, I charged it not in the name of the victim, but in the name of the people,” she told the United Center crowd.
This follows a strategy she has pursued since ramping up her campaign. As a Law & Order-themed ad that aired Monday had it: “We need a president who has spent her life prosecuting perpetrators like Donald Trump.”
On one hand, such a tack relies on simple logic. Harris ascended politics on the ladder of her prosecutor reputation. With her opponent convicted of a felony — and him staking his candidacy on the Democrats’ alleged softness on crime — “successful career prosecutor” makes for a stellar defense.
But while perhaps a sound political strategy, Harris’ embrace of her previous job runs her into an unexpected roadblock: Hollywood has...

This month marks the 15th anniversary of Batman: Arkham Asylum: the universally acclaimed video game developed by Rocksteady Studios that started an entire gaming franchise. Loosely inspired by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s best-selling graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, the 2009 game has DC Comics’ iconic superhero take on the Joker and a whole host of escaped inmates when they take over Gotham City’s asylum for the criminally insane. Over the course of a single, long night, Batman moves to stop the supervillains and their private army from wiping out the personnel trapped on the island as he moves to stop the Joker’s most dastardly plot yet.

Batman is undoubtedly one of the greatest superheroes ever created. An ordinary man relying on his physical strength, intelligent mind, and wealth to be one of the most significant comic book figures never fails to attract his fans. However, there is a major aspect of his character that is often subjected to debate among comic book enthusiasts, his philanthropy.

Robert Downey Jr. could be about to join an exclusive actors club by becoming just the fourth person to win both an Oscar and an Emmy for acting in the same calendar year.
Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Oscars for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer.” That Christopher Nolan biopic, which also won Best Picture, followed Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and depicted the scientist’s creation, and later guilt, of the atomic bomb. Downey Jr’s Strauss was a politician who was once an ally of Oppenheimer only to become his rival. Downey Jr’s portrayal of Strauss, the film’s villain, made him the obvious choice for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and that remained throughout awards season. He won the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG awards before he eventually won the Academy Award, beating fellow Oscar nominees Sterling K. Brown...

It’s easy to forget a time, not so long ago, when Joseph Gordon-Levitt seemed like one of the brightest rising stars in Hollywood. A slew of acclaimed supporting roles in Christopher Nolan movies ranging from the “Dark Knight” trilogy to “Inception” made it seem like the former child star was destined to dominate the next few decades of moviemaking with a halo that rivaled Nolan’s. But it never quite materialized that way, as Gordon-Levitt spent the late 2010s and early 2020s lying low and popping up in forgettable cameos that seemed more interested in cashing in on his celebrity status than expanding it.
It’s forgivable to have wondered, in recent years, whether his talent was overstated in the first place —but a quick viewing of Potsy Ponciroli’s “Greedy People” should quickly rectify that. Gordon-Levitt’s electrifying buffoonery is an easy highlight of the ensemble crime comedy.
