Family entertainment specialist Cake has signed a worldwide deal for an animated series based on streaming sensation “Lucas the Spider.” Partnering with Warner Bros. subsidiaries Cartoon Network and Boomerang, Cake will handle international distribution for the show, which has a planned season order of 78 seven-minute instalments.
Produced by Canadian outfit Fresh TV, in association with Toronto’s WexWorks Media, the CGI series will follow a curious little spider as he and friends explore the wider world, introducing new characters and expanding the world of the popular YouTube series that has amassed more than 3 million subscribers and 300 million views since its 2017 debut.

Cannes — “Never predict, especially about the future,” the saying goes. Three of MipJunior’s key speakers and kids industry players – from Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the BBC – took that to heart on Cannes’ Saturday afternoon when addressing the panel subject, “View from the Top: Gazing into the Future of Kids Media.” Rather than addressing where the business is headed – if they knew, they’d have ankled their jobs – Nickelodeon’s Jules Borkent, the BBC’s Jackie Edwards and Adina Pitt at Cartoon Network drilled down on major changes and challenges affecting where the kids media business is today. Watching the trailer for the Canadian-produced TV movie My Babysitter’s a Vampire (making its American premiere Friday on the Disney Channel), the most glaring thing I couldn’t wrap my head around is why a kid that far in his teens still needs a babysitter – a babysitter that looks to be the same age as him.
Is this boy a juvenile delinquent? Is he a total sissy? Are his parents super overprotective? What’s the deal? And is it really a good idea to pair a teenage boy almost assuredly experiencing hormonal overdrive with a really cute girl of an appropriate age for him to engage in the sort of carnal activity the adult film world has taught me always happens whenever an attractive babysitter is hired? Total Drama Island is getting a spinoff as the Cartoon Network has announced the addition of Total Drama Action. According to Variety, the new series, debuting in 2009, will also satirize reality television and was created by Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch of Canada’s Fresh TV.
Tdi first debuted on the network July 8, 2007 and mocks the Survivor-style shows with contestants seen on a deserted island. They have to form teams and complete challenges to win prizes. Since its start, the 27 episodes have been the anchor for the channel’s "Har Har Tharsdays" comedy block.
