Dark, violent historical epics have a special place in my heart, and the upcoming Mads Mikkelsen film "The Bastard" looks like it will be period-piece perfection. The film, which stars Mikkelsen as a 17th-century soldier charged with taking over a large swath of land for the king of Denmark, looks like the kind of movie that belongs alongside "The Northman" or "Valhalla Rising," which also starred Mikkelsen. The upcoming Danish-language film is still in production, so there aren't many marketing materials to share just yet. Thankfully, there are at least some great behind-the-scenes stills shared by the production company behind "The Bastard," Zentropa.
While it's still early, there are some interesting details available about the film, including the premise, possible release window, and more about the cast and crew. Here's everything we know so far about this moody-looking cinematic slice of Scandinavian history.

“The series deals with some of the biggest political issues of our time, as well the relevance of the Danish Realm in the modern world, the superpowers’ battle for control of the Arctic – and not least, the climate crisis,” said Netflix, which described “Power & Glory” as “a stand-alone continuation of the previous seasons of ‘Borgen.'”

The shadow of a certain massively popular fantasy television show looms large over Charlotte Sieling’s “Margrete: Queen of the North,” a glossy period drama that amounts to a what-if expansion on an incident from medieval Scandinavian history. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing — anyone missing their weekly dose of sumptuously recreated George R. R. Martin will have their itch lightly scratched by the courtly power-plays, passageway mutterings and spies-in-the-bedchamber aspects of Sieling’s well-upholstered film, even if dragons and ice zombies are notable by their absence.
However the “Game of Thrones” comparison also has its downside: Where the show excelled in keeping multiple plotlines running concurrently so even the simplest scene felt rife with subcutaneous intrigue, “Margrete” follows one storyline with dedicated, occasionally leaden fidelity, proceeding at a pace that might be appropriate in a 20-hour season of television, but that feels unusually indulgent in a feature film.

Photo: ‘The Investigation’/HBO The tragic murder of Kim Wall is one the most chilling true crime stories in recent years. Dubbed “the submarine case”, it was a story that dominated headlines in Denmark and even garnered some media attention in other parts of the world. HBO’s ‘The Investigation’, a six-part limited series from Denmark, tells that story entirely from the point of view of those trying to figure out the truth of what happened: chief inspector Jens Møller (Søren Malling) and his detectives, prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen (Pilou Asbaek), and Kim Wall’s parents Joachim and Ingrid (Rolf Lassgård and Pernilla August). The result is a slow and subdued but absorbing entry in the true-crime subgenre, told with genuine sensitivity and respect for all involved. [Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Investigation,” including the ending.]
There’s something conspicuously absent from a large portion of “The Investigation,” Tobias Lindholm’s dramatic retelling of the 2017 death of investigative journalist Kim Wall. It’s hard to imagine another treatment of this story that would span six episodes while omitting any onscreen depiction of eventual convicted murderer Peter Madsen.
Some audiences may balk at the ways the HBO show (now available in full on HBO Max) removes some of these standard elements of biographical crime stories. In staying as close to its title as possible, though, “The Investigation” managed to address a recent tragedy in a surprisingly clear-headed way.
Much of that stems from the way that “The Investigation” handles the passage of time. Though the season spans months, writer/director Lindholm resists putting down easy markers to wring tension out of breaks in the case. There’s a sameness to the way it unfolds,...

Towards the end of the new limited series “The Investigation,” the show’s central police inquiry seems stalled. Nothing is moving in the right direction, and all players seem understandably frustrated. One cop (Laura Christensen) sets things right with an unlikely note of encouragement. “This isn’t a perfect crime,” she tells her boss (Søren Malling). “It’s a clumsy, disgusting crime. So we must have overlooked something.”
This is an unexpected note for the TV procedural — which thrives on the sleuth as genius, seeing through a case that comes as a shock to the viewer. But “The Investigation,” written and directed by Tobias Lindholm and airing stateside on HBO after having debuted overseas, is no ordinary show. For one thing, the outcome will be known already to readers of the news: These Danish-speaking cops, in Copenhagen, are looking into the real-life 2017 killing of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, reported missing...

The reporter boarded a mini-submarine to interview its owner, Danish entrepreneur Peter Madsen, in August 2017. Madsen was rescued from the foundering sub the following day, but Wall didn’t surface. Part of her corpse was later discovered on shore 10 days later.

The BBC and Rtl have bought “The Investigation,” the upcoming drama about the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall. It comes from Tobias Lindholm, the writer-director behind Oscar-nominated picture “A War.”
Lindholm’s TV credits include Nordic hit “Borgen” and Netflix drama “Mindhunter.” Fremantle’s Miso Film is on production duty. Fremantle is distributing and closed the U.K. and German deals, meaning it has pre-sold the series to major free-tv broadcasters in Europe’s two largest markets. It will be targeting more deals on the show at Mipcom in Cannes, next week.
Six-part series “The Investigation” follows the complex investigation carried out by Jens Møller, the head of homicide for the Copenhagen Police, surrounding the murder of Wall. She was a freelance Swedish journalist who boarded a submarine to interview its owner, Peter Madsen. She was subsequently killed and entrepreneur Madsen faced a highly publicized trial and was convicted of her murder.

The international war drama, starring Trine Dyrholm in the lead role, began filming in and around Tartu on 29 August. A new war drama directed by Danish helmer Henrik Ruben Genz is now in the works. Principal photography began this week in and around Tartu, Estonia's second-largest city. Genz's new feature follows his 2017 dramedy Word of God, starring actors Søren Malling and Marie Askehave in the lead roles. In Erna at War, we follow the story of a strong woman called Erna (Trine Dyrholm), who goes to war dressed as a man to protect her intellectually disabled son Kalle (Sylvester Byder), called up to fight. Heading to the front disguised as private Julius Rasmussen, Erna must face not only the enemy but also the love of her life when she meets blacksmith Anton (Anders W Berthelsen) in the trenches. One of the story's antagonists...

Brian De Palma, “sort of”, returns to cinematic screens with Domino after a seven-year hiatus after his Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace starring feature Passion, released in 2012. I say “sort of” because De Palma’s latest hasn’t had the most conventional release. Originally shot in 2017, Domino has had a tirade of troubles during post-production and has ultimately distanced himself from the final product. Leading to a very limited cinema release and landed without a thud on most On Demand services.

Brian De Palma has used the Italian film composer Pino Donaggio on and off for over 40 years, ever since their first (and still greatest) collaboration, “Carrie,” in 1976. Donaggio, with his lushly purple neo-Bernard Herrmann dissonant extravagance, is to De Palma what Angelo Badalamenti has been to David Lynch: a composer of rapturous dread-infused melodies that evoke a kind of meta-romantic Old Hollywood delirium. Yet to hear the unmistakable sounds of yet another lavishly orchestrated Donaggio swoonfest laid over the flat, static expository scenes of the choppy benumbed “international” police thriller “Domino” is to watch De Palma trying to create cinematic fire out of burnt-out match sticks.
There are legendary examples of directors claiming that their work was cut to ribbons by clueless producers: the 1954 George Cukor version of “A Star Is Born”, or Jonathan Demme’s “Swing Shift.” But what are we to make of a movie like “Domino,...

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is dangling off a rooftop. To his left, he can see his best friend through a window, dying from a slit throat. To his right, he can see the murderer, also hanging for dear life. It’s a hell of a scene, a hell of an image, and yet — we feel nothing.
That’s “Domino,” a couple of interesting set pieces in search of a reason to exist, from director Brian De Palma. For most of his career, De Palma has been hailed as a modern master of suspense, or at least a dynamite visual stylist. And although many of his films — including “Carrie,” “Blow Out” and “Dressed to Kill” — are now classics, even misfires like “Snake Eyes” and “Passion” usually have some bravura cinematic showpieces that make them worth watching.

Brian De Palma has a fetish for the histrionic. His films are governed not by the rules of reality, with its rigor and banality, but by the aberrant logic of cinema, that realm where spectacle holds sovereignty. Though a semblance of our world may seep in here and there, like a gelid breeze through a cracked-open window, De Palma’s films are concerned more with opulence that mimesis. They are shimmery and silly exercises in stylish indulgence, populated by lecherous characters who act not in their own best interest but in the interest of cinematic craftsmanship. Emotions and ideas are in service of the art, of that immutable, often imitated style, gaudy, glorious, and mottled with blood, those baroque set pieces around which expository scenes are wrapped like garland. As Pauline Kael wrote in her review of The Fury, “Most other directors save the lives of the kind, sympathetic characters...

You do not have to squint very hard to see Brian De Palma in Domino. Not literally, mind you … he doesn’t usually take his Hitchcock fetish to constant-cameo lengths. But he’s there in the ominous zoom-in to a gun that a Copenhagen cop named Christian (Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has left on a chair in his apartment. He’s there in the sequence of Christian hanging perilously off a tall building’s breaking rain-gutter, chasing after the man who attacked his partner — a Vertigo reference writ large.

"Why don't you do your own dirty work?" Saban Films has debuted the official trailer for Domino, the latest movie made by prolific filmmaker Brian De Palma, who hasn't been making much (in the way of feature films) since Redacted in 2007 and Passion in 2012. The rather generic plot in this involves a police officer from Copenhagen who seeks justice for his partner's murder by a mysterious man, ending up in a cat and mouse chase with a duplicitous CIA agent with his own motives. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars, along with Carice van Houten, Guy Pearce, Søren Malling, Nicolas Bro, Thomas W. Gabrielsson, and Paprika Steen. For those who have been waiting for De Palma's comeback, this doesn't look like it will be that. A bit too unexciting and familiar, with a story that we've already seen many times before. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Brian De Palma's Domino,...

Comedy and tragedy go hand-in-hand in the ironically titled “Out of Tune,” a cleverly executed, perfectly performed Danish dramedy about an absurdist power struggle taking place in a remand penitentiary from talented helmer Frederikke Aspöck. Filled with flawed characters who are both lovable and despicable, this nuanced portrait of universally recognizable human behavior seems ripe for a remake in any country that welcomes social critique. Aided by notable production and sound design and a spot-on score, Aspöck achieves a tricky balance of tone and sets a snappy pace. After well-received screenings in Rotterdam and Göteborg, further festivals and boutique distributors will be singing the praises of this provocative crowdpleaser.
The film’s musical elements are woven into the narrative from the very beginning, as charming but manipulative celebrity entrepreneur Markus Føns (Jacob Hauberg Lohman) enters remand custody for financial fraud while he awaits trial. His off-shore fortune and glamorous Indian...

Miri Ann Beuschel with Anton Honik on Bodil Jørgensen: "They thought that I looked a lot like her." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
Christian Tafdrup's Parents (Forældre) certainly features the most bizarre moment of male bonding this year on the screen. This is a film where doing laundry and raking leaves are the actions that glue together fragile states of mind. Is the white rabbit or the torrential rain to blame for mysterious rejuvenation?
Kjeld (Søren Malling) and Vibeke (Bodil Jørgensen) say goodbye to their son Esben (Anton Honik), who moves out to go to college in the city. Their house in the suburbs feels big and empty and Kjeld has an idea with unexpected consequences. What if they moved back into the city as well?
