Pat Patterson, the former WWF professional wrestler, commentator and WWE match producer, has died at 79. When someone as beloved as Patterson passes, it does not take long for the genuine and heartfelt tributes to begin rolling in.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson led the tributes, penning a message to his “father figure” on Instagram, and recounted how Patterson helped him land his first WWE wrestling match.
“He was also responsible for calling Vince McMahon when I was training to become a pro wrestler (my $7 bucks days) and said, ‘Vince you gotta see this kid work in the ring.’ Vince flew me to Raw a few weeks later and I had my first match Ever in Corpus Christie, Texas. The rest is history and years later, here I am writing this post,” Johnson wrote.

Table For Three is back again, with a new episode on the WWE Network. I like this show but like I’ve said before, it’s not really long enough. This time we sit down with Jbl, Ron Simmons and Teddy Long, three guys who have a long friendship in wrestling.
We all know about the Simmons and Jbl history, with the two becoming The Acolytes and Apa back in the late 90s and 00s in WWE. A beer-drinking, brawling, ass-kicking tandem who were all about pounding-ass (remember that t-shirt?). Teddy Long would travel with the two of them between towns and a friendship blossomed between the three. You can see that here, with the three men all obviously comfortable around each other, joking about how cheap Long was during their time as touring WWE Superstars. We hear a lot about this, with Ron Simmons and John Layfield poking fun at the former SmackDown Gm.

Newsweek is reporting that Mauro Ranallo, announcer for WWE Smackdown Live as well as boxing and Mma organizations, has left the company. Last seen on WWE television on March 7th, speculation has run high as to the reason why Mauro had been off the air. Some speculated it was due to his bi-polar disorder, which Mauro has been open about. Dave Meltzer from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, one of the preeminent wrestling news organizations in the country, has been adamant since the story broke that the reason for Mauro leaving was due to bullying from Jbl. Citing the March 13 episode of Bring It To The Table, starring Peter Rosenberg, he cites that Jbl's verbal jabs at Mauro for winning the Best Announcer Award from the Wrestling Observer were cause for Mauro to leave. Mauro had this to say to Newsweek about his departure.

In a move as inevitable as The Rock dropping a People’s Elbow on somebody at WrestleMania, WWE have released the third in their Attitude Era series, focusing this time on previously unreleased content. This gives this volume a slightly different feel to the previous two, but is a little hit and miss because of it.
What does work about this volume is drafting Corey Graves in to provide context and comment between each of the fifteen matches in the main feature. Graves brings an enthusiasm and knowledge to this role that others sometimes lack, namely John Bradshaw Layfield on the recent Us Championship release, and his comments are interesting and enlightening.
The choice of matches, too, is inspired with WWE digging deep to present several previously unreleased matches that are historically significant in the company’s history. The jewel in the crown of these has to be the first...

There were many backstage at WrestleMania 32 who believed The Undertaker had retired from ‘Mania following the conclusion of last night’s victory over Shane McMahon, according to PWInsider.
As has been noted, an interesting moment occurred after the match when The Undertaker took off his gloves and left them in the middle of the squared circle, which led many to believe it was a symbolic meaning over the Deadman’s future.
Although we probably shouldn’t look too much into it given ‘Mania took place in The Undertaker’s home state of Dallas, Taker noticeably had many of his friends and family in attendance for the show, which only fueled the fire of his apparent symbolic gesture.
Interestingly, John Bradshaw Layfield on commentary noted that we should expect The Undertaker back competing again at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando next year. In addition, The Undertaker is already scheduled to compete at the...

WWE have revealed that former wrestling manager Slick will be the man to induct The Big Boss Man into the WWE Hall Of Fame.
A memorable character from the 80s, Slick managed the Boss Man for his first couple of years in WWF. Nicknamed “The Doctor Of Style”, the storyline went that Slick brought the former corrections officer from Cobb County, Georgia to deliver hard times to the World Wrestling Federation.
After a successful run as a singles competitor, Slick would then pair Boss Man with Akeem to form the gigantic tag team, The Twin Towers. Their partnership would come to an end in 1990, when Slick attempted to sell the Boss Man’s services to The Million Dollar Man.

WWE have revealed that former WCW World Heavyweight Champion Vader will be the man to induct Stan Hansen into the WWE Hall Of Fame in Dallas next month.
The connection between the two grapplers is clear. Way back in February 1990, Vader fought Hansen at an Ajpw versus Njpw supercard show where Hansen inadvertently poked Vader’s eye out of its socket with his right thumb, after getting carried away during an exchange of stiff exchanges.
Incredibly, Vader would continue the contest after removing his own mask to push the eyeball back into its socket and holding it in place with his eyelid. The match would continue and eventually end in a no-contest, with Vader eating needing a metal place to be surgically placed under his eye.
Those old enough to remember it can remind themselves of the brutal match below…

There’s an epidemic sweeping the world, and Titan Tower is afflicted as much as anywhere else. Over the last few months, it’s as if various wrestling personalities and affiliated staff have discovered for the first time a) what online trolling is, and b) how to block it.
Like enthusiastic evangelists, fervent anti-bullying campaigners like John Layfield and Taz are spreading the word about these toxic creatures called ‘trolls’ and the amazing invention of the ‘block’ button. No longer does Joey Styles have to sit and suffer the slings and arrows of sarcastic wrestling fans telling him that WWE online polls are worked, when he can simply fire off a sarcastic tweet and shout Blocked! into the aether. Mauro Ranallo, the new Smackdown announcer, has taken to using the hashtag #BLOCKParty, which is actually quite funny.
Of course, some of us are just innocent victims of the anti-troll crusades.

WhatCulture.com has learned that a source high-up inside WWE recently let slip the names of five candidates who have been discussed for this year’s Hall of Fame.
While these can only be treated as rumour until confirmed by WWE – and with anything in wrestling able to change at any time – our understanding is that all of the names below are virtually a lock for a spot to join the already announced Sting in this year’s class.
A couple are a surprise, while others were expected and long overdue. Some are relevant to the state of Texas – the host state of WrestleMania – be it for their history competing in the area or having been raised there.
But it is our understanding the following names will be inducted this year…

The legit tough guys in WWE have always been able to command respect, and were traditionally the most powerful people in any wrestling locker room. It goes back to the early twentieth century, when top-tier wrestlers needed to “shoot” in addition to “working” matches.
That need for shoot ability in the early days of pro wrestling was down to the real dangers of the sport. Fans thought pro wrestling was real, and tensions often boiled over. A heel needed to be prepared to fight back any attack that could come from the crowd. The wrestlers also needed to be legit tough in case their opponent tried to screw or shoot with them.
By the late twentieth century, legit toughness was on the way out. Guys like Hulk Hogan had turned wrestling into a circus show, and fans knew it was all pre-determined entertainment.
But internally, the respect for legit tough guys remained.

Kevin Owens’ Package Piledriver Is In WWE 2K16!
A new video released by 2K Dev shows a triple threat match between Neville, Kevin Owens and Sheamus at WrestleMania Xxxi.
The clip is pretty revealing and shows a number of new details 2K have been working on in action. For example, how cool is it to see that Sheamus clothesline at 35 seconds send Kevin Owens over the top rope rather than not recognising the ropes are even there?
The other main details are that Owens’ package piledriver, seen being hit on The Celtic Warrior at 44 seconds, is included in the game and the rather confusing absence of John Bradshaw Layfield from commentary.
The piledriver, which Owens used as his finisher before he arrived in WWE, is a move that is banned by the powers that be because it is considered to be too dangerous, although the virtual versions of our...

WWE has made more changes to their commentary teams on both Raw and Smackdown following the end of Tough Enough. The new permanent team on Raw will be Michael Cole, John Bradshaw Layfield and Byron Saxton. The Smackdown team will be Rich Brennan, Jerry Lawler and Booker T.
One of the notable moves is Saxton replacing Booker full time on Raw. It’s an interesting choice because Booker was in the seat for most of the year and then he was a coach on Tough Enough for a few months. It was expected that Booker would get his spot back, but WWE decided to keep Saxton there full time. Saxton was on Smackdown before that, so Booker switched with him.
The announce team for pay-per-view events will likely remain Cole, Lawler and Jbl.

When Ultimate Fighting Championship held their first event in November 1993, several WWE superstars took notice. It was a bold new entry on to the sports entertainment pay per view landscape, promising real fights and brutal expressions of mixed martial arts.
The tough guys in the then WWF locker room were instantly hooked. It was great entertainment, familiar in its pro wrestling style presentation, but uniquely captivating in its genuine competition. Shooters and tough guys have always been idolised in pro wrestling circles, so it was only natural that WWF and WCW wrestlers started to take an interest in the world of Mma.
Inevitably, it ended up with pro wrestlers talking a whole lot of talk and displaying tough guy bravado about how they’d fare in the Ufc. John Bradshaw Layfield was one such guy, fancying himself as a bit of hard man. That’s what inspired him...

John Bradshaw Layfield has been employed by the WWE for almost twenty years. It is a career that has seen him go from a cowboy/mountain man, to a barroom brawler, to a Stan Hansen wannabe, back to a barroom brawler and then, finally, to his most successful incarnation: the Jbl character.
It took Jbl a long time to make it to the top. For the first nine years of his WWE career, he was primarily a tag teamer or an undercard singles wrestler. However, having cultivated friendships with WWE power players like The Undertaker, Triple H and Vince McMahon, he was selected for main event stardom in 2004.
Although he was a midcard guy on-screen, off-screen Bradshaw had a very important, self-appointed role in the WWE locker room. Throughout the years there have been plentiful stories of Jbl’s backstage behaviour, including allegations of bullying, hazing and racism/xenophobia.

More often than not, people involved in the pro wrestling industry tend to get a false sense of toughness. Now, backing up just a little, there’s an argument to be made that simply being involved in such a legitimately arduous business requires at least some degree of mental and physical strength, but the fact that wrestling is far more exciting when performers co-operate (as opposed to going into business for themselves) cannot be ignored.
John Bradshaw Layfield – once considered one of the WWF/WWE’s roughest and toughest – had his reputation taken down a notch or two by an extremely unlikely source. Throwing his weight around, Layfield was knocked on his ass by the diminutive announcer, Joey Styles, during a backstage confrontation several years ago, putting paid to his supposed toughness.

There were heavy hearts for WWE fans heading into the 2006 Royal Rumble because of the death of beloved former WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero, who tragically died of a heart attack two months earlier.
Even though Eddie was no longer with us, his name was uttered endlessly in the build up to the match mostly because of his good friend Rey Mysterio was a favorite in the match. Eddie had a long feud with Rey in 2005, but after Eddie’s death WWE had no problem in saying that Rey was one of his closest friends. While everybody else was also mourning Eddie’s death, Rey was wearing “Eg” armbands in tribute to his fallen friend.
This was a period in WWE where they were in a bit of a funk. There aren’t too many Royal Rumble matches where the Rumble match isn’t on last, but this is one of them.

It was a new era in WWE as they headed to the Royal Rumble in 2005. Two years earlier, Brock Lesnar won the Rumble match and was being groomed to be the biggest star in the business for the next decade. Unfortunately, Brock left the company following WrestleMania 20 in 2004, so they had to restart their search to see who would replace Steve Austin and The Rock as the flagbearers of WWE.
Two of the men that were penciled in to step up to the plate were Batista and John Cena. At the time, Batista was still a bit of a heel because he was with Evolution for a couple of years, but the fans knew he was turning against Triple H and Ric Flair by that point. Cena had become one of the biggest babyfaces on the Smackdown brand for about a year, so he was definitely ready to step up.

Tonight’s WWE Raw show is scheduled to be a ‘Raw Reunion’, with several major returns planned. The show will be from Dallas, Texas, and major names appearing will be Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels.
The show will be built around nostalgia and it could feature an nWo and D Generation X face off. All the major talent from the two factions will be there, leading the internet wrestling community to speculate on an nWo vs Dx angle being established. Perhaps it could even lead to a match at WrestleMania 31, as Hulk Hogan continues to talk about competing this year. The nWo vs Dx would certainly be a big money draw.
In all likelihood, any returns on tonight’s Raw will be for one night only. There does seem a very good chance of the nWo reuniting, but it will be limited to this Raw and no further dates.

Last week, WWE announced a reshuffle in their annouce teams ahead of SmackDown’s move to SyFy on Thursday.
Michael Cole, Booker T and John Bradshaw Layfield will commentate on Raw while Cole, Byron Saxton and the returning Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler will handle SmackDown duties. The King, Cole, and Jbl will take the reigns for pay per view events.
The King has been missing from our television screens so far this year after being admitted to hospital with a bout of diverticulitis.
The transfer sees Lawler leave Raw after over 20 years of service. Spending most of his time behind the mic with Good Ol’ Jim Ross, Jerry colour-commentated his way into the hearts of a generation of WWE fans as his comedic utterances and over the top mannerisms took areas of Raw, especially the Diva’s segments, to a whole new stratosphere.

The move of Smackdown to Thursday nights starting on January 15th means some changes to WWE’s broadcast teams. It was announced on WWE.com that both the Raw and Smackdown teams will be changing.
The new Raw announce team will be Michael Cole as the lead play by play guy with John Bradshaw Layfield and WWE Hall of Famer Booker T as the analysts. This past week, Booker filled in for Jerry Lawler and apparently management liked what they heard because they have made them the permanent team. It’s a promotion for Booker, who was doing commentary on the pre-show although he was a commentator on Smackdown a few years ago. Cole and Jbl are in the same positions they were in before.

The most recent wrestling personality to appear on Chris Jericho’s Podcast One show was former WWE Champion and current announcer John Layfield, better known to fans as Jbl. The man formerly known as Bradshaw has had a lengthy career with WWE, dating back to late 1995 when he signed his contract, debuting the following January as Justin “Hawk” Bradshaw, a Texan roughneck heavily inspired by Stan Hansen.
He had a respectable career as a tag team wrestler, most notably as one half of the Apa (Acolyte Protection Agency) with Ron Simmons before a sudden dearth of name talent forced WWE to repackage him as John Bradshaw Layfiend–Jbl, for short–and shove him into the main event scene.
While his matches may not have been lighting the world on fire, he was doing his job in the ring and getting tremendous heat through his promos. The character was great at infuriating the audience,...

It was announced on Wednesday by Canadian broadcaster Arda Ocal that he has been hired by WWE as a broadcaster that will be using the name Kyle Edwards. As we all know, WWE loves to rename their on-air talent when they hire them, so it’s no surprise that they would give Ocal a new name. We’re not sure where the name came from, but perhaps it was a combination of Nascar drivers Kyle Petty and Carl Edwards although it could be totally random.
The news was broken by Ocal in a tweet he sent out on Wednesday where he said: “To quote @TheRock, “Finally….” I’m beyond thrilled to join @WWE as a broadcaster. Dreams do come true… ”

John “Bradshaw” Layfield has been a WWE employee for nearly 20 years. He’s been retired from in-ring competition since 2009 and is probably going to be in WWE’s Hall of Fame in the very near future. These day fans know Jbl as one of the main voices of WWE since he’s been a regular commentator since the summer of 2012. He’s also a one time WWE Champion that is best known for his pompous rich persona known simply as Jbl.
It’s time to take a look at some of the things that WWE wants you to forget about Jbl’s career. These are things that aren’t mentioned when talking about the best moments of his career. Some are storyline related. Other things are behind the scenes stuff.
His WWE career had a few chapters. He started out as a midcard wrestler that was doing a tough cowboy type of gimmick.

Pro Wrestling and the internet have gone hand in hand for nearly two decades now, ever since Dave Meltzer first popularised the web as a place to get the dirt on what was really going down in the WWF.
From the moment that Meltzer unleashed the True story of the Montreal Screwjob online in 1997 we’ve been hooked. It’s almost as interesting to follow WWE these days for the backstage drama that leaks out online, often vastly more enthralling than the scripted drama taking place on television.
In 2014 however a new wrestling internet sensation is taking place, interacting with our WWE heroes on Twitter! There are several WWE superstars who will tweet you back and retweet your support. Others in the locker room come out with hilarious jokes, while some post insider comments and pull the kayfabe curtain back somewhat. Following WWE superstars has became an absolute must for fans.

The Wrestling Observer reports on a worsening of relations between Vince McMahon and Jim Ross.
The legendary WWE announcer recently told an embarrassing Vince McMahon story on the Anthony and Opie Show, referencing that the chairman once went on TV after “sharting” his trousers. The incident was over a decade ago, Vince was in the gorilla position with Gerald Brisco, and as a rib he bent down to fart in Brisco’s face. Unfortunately Vince followed through and even more unfortunately he was immediately due out in the ring for a Mr. McMahon segment. He had no choice but to go to the ring with a brown stain in his khaki trousers, which none of the production team dared to show.

When the Punk chants start, WWE announcer Michael Cole commented saying “oh there ya go, that’ll drown out soon.” Then he followed it up with: “How about go away.” Should the fans go away or Cm Punk? Please clarify for us, Michael.

Nxt begins with the Raw General Manager, Brad Maddox, talking with Cj Parker and Tyler Breeze, he pairs them up to team together later in the night.
We head to the ring for a tag-team turmoil match to determine the number one contenders to the Nxt Tag Team Championships. Enzo and Colin Cassidy make their way to the ring, Enzo is a riot on the microphone and the “S.A.W.F.T…Sawft” line is over. Very over. The first team out to face “Big Caz” and Enzo are Breeze and Parker, the hippy and the selfie. We get a “Breeze is Gorgeous” chant. Parker and Enzo have a nice few moments before Cassidy tags in and nails Parker for the three-count. The next team out are Rusev and Dawson, along with their manager and friend, Sylvester Lafort. The team is now named “The Fighting Legionnaires” Some solid power stuff from Cassidy and Rusev.

It all used to be so simple. What worked for the territories would work for the WWF: crown your biggest draw the champ and feed him a succession of supporting players from further down the card. Don’t worry if the challenger isn’t particularly over; the rub from the champ will make him look like a star for the couple of months he spends above his regular place further down the card. It’s a model that made Hulk Hogan the biggest thing the sport had ever seen. But that was back in the day of television squash matches and only a handful of Pay-Per-Views a year.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has announced on his personal blog that he will join former announce-partner Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler this Saturday to deliver an announcement regarding WWE’s latest video game, WWE 2K14.

WhatCulture.com can actually confirm this announcement as we will be attending the reveal.
WWE 2K14 will be the first of WWE’s video-game series to appear under the 2K Sports banner. The series was previously published by Thq from 2000 until their bankruptcy earlier this year. Although J.R. hasn’t specifically stated what the announcement will relate to, we can assume that it will be to confirm the game’s full roster. J.R. joined The King and Lilian Garcia...

On this week’s (4/8/2013) edition of WWE’s Monday Night Raw, the WWE received a huge wake-up call. The East Rutherford, New Jersey crowd packed into the Izod Center (15 minutes from my hometown of Jersey City) and blew the roof off of the place. For every and any thing. While Vince McMahon will not figure out why for another few weeks, let us examine the reactions garnered through the night.
In the shadow of possibly the worst Wrestlemania of all-time, 29, New Jersey was fed-up. Done with the Cena-Rock “Once in a Lifetime” rematch, the “No one cares, Triple H, just go away forever” almost-retirement match and the “Please Let Cm Punk beat Undertaker So It Doesn’t Wind Up Being Cena or Hhh” match, as well as other lackluster matches, New Jersey decided it was going to voice its opinion.

Vince McMahon loves the Fandango gimmick so it was no surprise to see him win his debut match against Chris Jericho. What was surprising though was just how poor the match actually was. Jericho is usually the go to guy when Vince wants to make someone look better than they could ever make themselves look but tonight just wasn’t his night. That’s not to say Y2J wasn’t fine in the ring it was more that the two men just didn’t mesh well together and in fact delivered a match that would have looked equally poor on an episode of Raw or Smackdown.
John Bradshaw Layfield’s commentary was the highlight of this match as he lambasted Fandango for being so poor but still played up how impressive Curtis’ win was considering Jericho is a former six time World Champion. If only Curtis had managed to...

I wonder if I can convince Virgin Media to refund me my £14.95 after last night’s Royal Rumble proved to be a monumental waste of money?
After what can only be described as a weak build up, the Royal Rumble finally hit out screens last night, leaving many WWE fans lost for words – and not in a good way. The show opened with the World Heavyweight Title match between Alberto Del Rio and The Big Show. This was nowhere near their previous match in terms of excitement and urgency, and would have been a much better fit for an episode of Smackdown, or better yet, a house show. After a sloppy back and forth, the match ended when Del Rio’s Bff Ricardo Rodriguez taped Show’s feet to the ropes preventing him from standing before the 10 count. Oh, and Bret Hart appeared and called Del Rio the Mexican Hitman.

Last night’s WWE Super SmackDown results live from Pittsburgh. Josh Matthews, Michael Cole and John Bradshaw Layfield are on commentary.
The show opens with MizTV and his guests Dolph Ziggler and Aj Lee. They come out together with Big E Langston. They stop and kiss before heading to the ring.
Miz asks why Aj screwed John Cena and she asks why did Cena play with her heart. She thought their kiss was the start of something beautiful together but she was wrong. She says Cena was just messing with her heart and emotions. The crowd chants “Aj’s crazy” and she gets upset. Aj says Cena wanted to keep her hidden away like his dirty little secret. Aj says in the end he was no different to Cm Punk and Daniel Bryan, others who broke her heart. Miz asks Ziggler if he’s aboard the crazy train and Langston steps in between them.
