Malaise (Don Levy). Courtesy of the artist, The Don Levy Project, and Academy Film Archive. This is the second year in a row that filmmaker / programmer Mónica Savirón has organized a screening of experimental films for the First Look series. Last year’s program, “A Matter of Visibility,” focused on women’s cinema from around the world. This is a subject about which the U.S.-based, Spanish-born Savirón is uniquely suited to illuminate us. Last year’s show was gratifyingly diverse in both style and national origin, the program anchored by a rarely-screened work by then-recently deceased Chantal Akerman, and including other artists whose work is all too seldom seen on these shores. Some, like Lis Rhodes and Cécile Fontaine, are reasonably canonical, whereas others showcased by Savirón were up-and-coming filmmakers such as Nazli Dinçel and Klara Ravat. While I don’t know of any experimental film programmers for...

At first glance, it seems like this is a man who has it all. Belgium's Prince Laurent, 52, shares a beautiful home with his English wife, Princess Claire, and their three children. He's been showered with honors from all over Europe, enjoys high rank as a naval officer, pursues his interest in conservation and receives a generous $342,000 annual stipend from the state. And yet, Prince Laurent admits that, at times, he gets "a little tired" of royal life. The prince, whose elder brother King Philippe, 55, has ruled the nation since their father's abdication in 2013, earlier this month visited Castle Insegotte in Filot,...

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s upcoming untitled Farsi-language project – which is in post-production having shot over the winter in Iran – has been luring buyers.
Paris-based Memento Films International (Mfi) has sealed deals to Benelux (Cinéart), Switzerland (Frenetic), Italy (Lucky Red), Japan (Doma Inc), South Korea (Challan), Poland (Gutek Films), Portugal (Alambique), Ex-Yugoslavia (Megacom), Israel (Lev Cinema), Greece (Seven Films), Scandinavia (Scanbox) and Middle East (Falcon).
Although the fine details of the project are largely under wraps, Farhadi has revealed that it is a contemporary tale revolving around a couple whose relationship turns violent due to societal pressures.
Long-time Farhadi collaborators Taraneh Alidoosti, who played the titular role in About Elly, and Shahab Hosseini, who appeared in Farhadi’s Golden Bear and Oscar-winning A Separation, co-star as the central couple.

ITV Americas has found its new scripted leader. Endemol vet Philippe Maigret has been appointed president of scripted programming at the TV giant's U.S. arm. The news comes just two weeks after ITV Studios America president Orly Adelson exited just 18 months into the job -- and some eight months after her boss, ITV Studios Us Group CEO Paul Buccieri left for a key role at A+E. Maigret stepped down at rival Endemol earlier this year, after a four-year tenure in which he oversaw the creation of its drama production studio, which produced such shows as Low Winter Sun, Red Widow and Kingdom. His appointment at ITV comes as the company has been making an

Adieu au langage - Goodbye to Language
A Works Cited
Introduction
From its bluntly political opening (Alfredo Bandelli's 'La caccia alle streghe': "Always united we win, long live the revolution!") to its hilarious fecal humor and word play—with 3D staging that happily puts to shame James Cameron and every other hack who's tried their hand at it these past several years—Adieu au langage overwhelms us with a deluge of recited texts, music and images, hardly ever bothering to slow down to let us catch our breath. Exhilarating and certainly not surprising—this is the guy who made Puissance de la parole after all!
The release of a new Godard film or video means a new encounter with texts, films and music often familiar from the filmmaker's earlier work—reworked and re-contextualized—as well as new discoveries to be sorted through and identified. This life-long interest in quotation...

It wrecks lives – but it has also inspired art from the poetry of Baudelaire to the music of Lou Reed. In Paris and Berlin, Andrew Hussey traces the path of heroin through modern culture
One of the easiest places to find heroin in Paris is in the streets in and around the Gare du Nord, a stone's throw away from the Eurostar terminal. I know about this place partly because I live in Paris and I am a frequent Eurostar traveller, and partly because this is where Google sent me when I typed in the request "Where to find heroin in Paris". Apparently the most popular spot for dealing is the rue Ambroise-Paré which contains a series of entrances to underground car parks where users can shoot up in relative privacy. The place permanently stinks of piss and is under constant police surveillance, as dealers and clients scurry back and forth between their hiding places.

Arsenal went five points clear at the top of the Premier League by beating nearest challengers Liverpool thanks to classy strikes from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger made one alteration from the XI that started the win at Crystal Palace. Tomas Rosicky replaced Mathieu Flamini. Mikel Arteta served his ban for the red card picked up in that game in midweek. Jack Wilshere missed out with an ankle problem.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers was without right back Glen Johnson again due to illness, so academy product Jon Flanagan deptuized. Brazil playmaker Philippe Coutinho was back on the bench after six weeks out with a shoulder injury.
Czech captain Rosicky worked Simon Mignolet on five minutes after a one-two with Cazorla. Liverpool’s Belgian keeper tipped a shot across goal behind. Jordan Henderson then fluffed his lines as he caught Cazorla in possession and broke for the visitors.

Cardiff City caused a shock last weekend as they came from behind at home to beat Manchester City 3-2. José Mourinho got what he seemingly set out to do on Monday night in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford, leaving Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool as the only two sides with 100% win records heading into this weekend.
Manchester United looked the most likely winners on Monday as Chelsea rarely threatened going forward. Tottenham have relied on two penalties to pick up six points from their opening two games having not been awarded a single penalty throughout the whole of last season.
This weekend sees Liverpool host Manchester United and the North London derby as Arsenal take on Tottenham Hotspur. Manchester City are looking to rebound from defeat with a home tie against Hull City, whilst Everton travel to Cardiff City.

The English Premier League returns on Saturday and we’re excited as ever for the start of the season. Liverpool host Stoke City in the opening game of the season at lunchtime on Saturday before Manchester City under Manuel Pellegrini in a Premier League game for the first time take on Newcastle United on Monday night in the final game of the opening weekend.
David Moyes’ reign at Manchester United begins at Swansea City in Saturday evening’s televised game. Can for the former Everton boss ease the opening day pressure with a win in Wales after last weekend’s Community Shield victory over Wigan Athletic?
Arsène Wenger heads into the opening game of the season with just one new signing and a couple of players missing through injury. They host Aston Villa in one of the five 3pm Saturday kickoffs, who narrowly escaped relegation last season.

An exciting heads-up and major opportunity for young filmmakers: Tribeca Film Festival is collaborating with the Imagination Series: Film Competition for a filmmaking contest in which screenwriters and directors pitch their conceptual take on a short script by Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious). Five ideas will be produced, and the resulting films will be shown at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. With a chance to write and direct an instant-entry at Tribeca, the contest catch phrase makes it sound almost too easy: "No experience required. Just imagination." Whenever depression looms for Joe Queenan, it's time to turn to Johnny Hallyday. What is it about the films of the French Elvis Presley that holds the answer to all life's woes?
The other day I was feeling unusually melancholy, what with the economy in the tank and construction workers building evil McMansions next to my house. One of my friends suggested I watch a Hong Kong gangster movie called Vengeance. He said the film was completely insane and would take my mind off my troubles. I told him all Hong Kong gangster movies were completely insane, but he fired back: "No – this one is really insane."
He was right.

What do you get when you mix a futuristic, time-as-money/life-or-death premise; a cast of pretty young things, including Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Matt Bomer and Cillian Murphy; plus the sound sci-fi sensibilities of writer/director Andrew Niccol ("Gattaca," "The Truman Show") and appropriately stylized cinematography by Roger Deakins ("True Grit," "The Reader")? "In Time" is what, a complex, visually appealing sci-fi thriller that has audiences and critics somewhat divided. (The critical collective over at Rotten Tomatoes is at 36 percent rotten, while its audience rating sits at 76 percent fresh.)

Prince Albert II of Monaco has finally said his "I Do". The head of the House of Grimaldi married longtime girlfriend Charlene Wittstock in a civil ceremony taking place inside the palace in Monaco on Friday afternoon, July 1, before sealing their union with what seemed to be a shy kiss on the palace's balcony.
Some branded the balcony kiss awkward, and body language expert Vincent Harris told Hollywood Life, "This is about as lackluster as it gets. These are the kinds of kisses grandmothers place on the heads of their grandchildren." Unlike the two kisses Prince William and Kate Middleton shared back in April, he said that both Albert and Charlene were not enjoying the kiss.
The awkward kiss aside, Albert and Charlene exchanged their vows in front of Philippe Narmino, president of Monaco's Council of State. His sisters, Princess Stephanie and Princess Caroline, were among 80 family members, friends and...

Actor best known as Paddy, the militant shop steward in the BBC's The Rag Trade
The actor Miriam Karlin, who has died of cancer aged 85, became famous in the early 1960s as Paddy, the militant shop steward of a London clothing firm in the BBC television comedy series The Rag Trade. As Paddy, who was always willing to signal a strike with a whistle and her catchphrase "Everybody out!", Karlin was watched by millions, and quoted by millions. But neither that success, nor her more serious roles on stage, removed the gnawing dissatisfaction she felt at not achieving something more serious. She channelled some of that feeling into promoting broadly leftwing causes as a member of the council of the actors' union Equity, and as a campaigner for the Anti-Nazi League, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Soviet Jewry.

Did French President Nicolas Sarkozy set up Dominique Strauss-Kahn to sideline his top opponent? Is First Lady Carla Bruni pregnant just to boost his popularity? Tracy McNicoll reports from Paris. Plus, the latest news on Strauss-Kahn.
As politicians go, French President Nicolas Sarkozy looks to be having a good week. An especially good week. A sell-the-movie-rights, surreal reversal of fortune, I was lost and now I see especially good week. And this is a desperately unpopular president who, without overstating it, has yet to have a good week this decade. With exactly a year to go before France's next president is inaugurated, Sarkozy's most formidable obstacle to re-election, a rival many believed would declare his candidacy as early as next week, looks very suddenly and emphatically out of the way. And as one of Sarkozy's most influential critics quipped, Dominique Strauss-Kahn facing charges of attempted rape on a New York...

Wrestlers, fighters and boxers may not always make the best actors, but as action movie henchmen go, there.s really no one better. They.re very familiar with hand to hand combat, they.re usually great at making menacing faces and you know if a stunt goes awry, they know how to take a punch. If they can deliver a few lines properly, that.s just an added bonus. Randy Couture made the most out of his lines in The Expendables, as well as his time on The Unit, and in doing so, earned himself another shot. The actor's portion of the list ranged from genre favorites like "Saw's" Tobin Bell to "Avatar's" Zoe Saldana, from "Sopranos" star James Gandolfini, whose film credits include "In the Loop" and "Get Shorty" to rising leading man Ryan Reynolds, who's appeared in "The Proposal" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."
An international sampling of directors made the cut: Among them France's Jacques Audiard, Argentina's Juan Jose Campanella, Denmark's Lone Scherfig and, from the U.S., Lee Daniels and Adam Shankman, the latter of whom co-produced the last Oscar show.

It's the casting opportunity of a lifetime! If you're in Albuquerque or Sante Fe from August 8 to September 12, you can work as a stand-in or extra on Saturday Night Live's feature film version of MacGruber. And of course, jettison into cinematic history! Or more likely oblivion, but at least they're paying! And it's all over at Craigslist.
First, they need stand-ins for the four stars -- Will Forte, Kristin Wiig, Ryan Philippe, and Val Kilmer. If you've got the look, and their exact measurements -- no 6'2" Wiig impersonators or 5'1" Kilmer look-alikes allowed -- you can fill out a talent application and get considered for the honor. But if you don't look like those guys, there are a whole slew of extras required. They're looking for a string quartet, upscale men and women, twenty-something club-goers, tattooed/scarred burly wrestlers and experienced martial artists, "Russian-looking men," and some Native Americans.
