The Last Days of Disco. Barely a few minutes into Whit Stillman’s The Last Days of Disco (1998), a young Manhattanite refers to the city’s bustling nightclub scene as a full-blown movement—partying is not a lifestyle nor a hobby, but a kind of mission. His name is Josh (Matt Keeslar), a recent graduate who still cringes at the “social wasteland” of his college years, and evidently thought clubs would fix that overnight. “What I found so encouraging,” he tells a pal, “was the idea that when the time came to have a social life, there’d be all these places where people could go to.” Except the right places are impossible to get into. Ironically, the disco enthusiast has never actually stepped foot inside a disco, and as he sneaks his way into one of New York’s most iconic, he marvels at the neon-lit world as if...

It may feel like throuples are a distinctly modern romantic arrangement – but this couldn’t be further from the case.
In fact, consensual non-monogamy, such as a ménage à trois, goes back centuries. It can even be found in the bible.
Recently, David Haye has been the subject of speculation surrounding his private life, with fans claiming that the ex-boxer is in a three-way relationship with model Sian Osborne and The Saturdays singer Una Healy.
On Valentine’s Day, Haye appeared to confirm the rumours, with Healy also sharing a coy message on Instagram alluding to the relationship.
When it comes to depictions of polyamorous relationships in film and TV, good examples have traditionally been few and far between.
But that’s not to say there haven’t been any – from pre-code classics to modern indie dramas, there are plenty of films and TV series which place the spotlight on...

As Elvis, Austin Butler got a lot of experience being ordered around by Colonel Tom Parker. Now, for his role in 2023’s Dune: Part Two, Austin Butler has detailed his encounters working under someone far more intimidating: a Navy Seal.
“For Dune, there were different challenges; there were certain physical things from the first meeting with Denis [Villeneuve], [knowing] what his vision was,” he said. “I worked with this…Navy Seal [guy] who trained me for months beforehand just to get my body into a place where it was available to not only be an imposing physical presence but do whatever was asked of me.” Butler will portray Feyd-Rautha, a role most famously played by Sting. No official word yet if Dune: Part Two will see Austin Butler in a futuristic speedo.

Denis Villeneuve has found his villain for “Dune: Part Two” as Christopher Walken will play the devious Emperor Shaddam IV in the follow-up to last year’s Oscar-winning sci-fi epic.
In “Dune,” Emperor Shaddam IV had a major off-screen presence as he assigned House Atreides and Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) to take over Arrakis from the Harkonnens, only for that assignment to be a double-cross as the Emperor had anticipated that the Harkonnens would move to exterminate House Atreides, thereby eliminating a potential threat to the Emperor’s rule. The role was previously played by Jose Ferrer in David Lynch’s 1984 “Dune” film and Matt Keeslar in the “Dune 2000” miniseries.
“Dune” won six Oscars this year along with Best Picture, Directing and Adapted Screenplay nominations for Villeneuve. With a global box office total of 400 million, it is also Villeneuve’s highest grossing film in his career.

“Elvis” headliner Austin Butler is in early talks to play Feyd Rautha in “Dune: Part Two,” according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
Feyd is the cunning nephew of Baron Harkonnen (played by Stellan Skarsgård in the first film). The role was previously played by Sting in David Lynch’s 1984 “Dune” film and Matt Keeslar in the “Dune 2000” miniseries.
Denis Villeneuve will return to direct the sequel, which is set for release in October 2023.
As implied by the final scene of the first film, “Dune: Part Two” will see Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) continue to train his powers of foresight and mind control under the aid of his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and the Fremen on Arrakis. Chani (Zendaya) becomes both a lover and a guide to Paul as he slowly grows in power among the Fremen as their prophesized messiah; and considering how Jessica’s role was...

After 20 years, Wes Craven’s Scream 3 currently sits at a 39 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And while Rt scores are hardly the only way to define a film’s quality status, Scream 3 still remains something of a punching bag for fans of the franchise (we get it—Gale’s bangs are weird! Wow!), and I’m here to say that while it’s not the strongest entry in the series, Scream 3 deserves so much more love than it gets, and after two decades, it’s time more genre fans recognized the greatness that is contained within its 116-minute running time.
It may not have the breakout opening that we get at the start of Scream, or the visceral gut-punch of Scream 2's tone-setting theater killings, but I really love how amped up everything feels during Scream 3’s opener. But we open with Cotton Weary...

Whit Stillman on overcoming drawing a "blank" for The Last Days Of Disco: "I was very helped by the fact that a magazine sent me Anthony Haden-Guest's book about Studio 54 to review."
In the final instalment of my conversation with Whit Stillman we go on a "magical" stroll connecting Fred Astaire and Joan Fontaine in George Stevens's A Damsel In Distress to Greta Gerwig and Adam Brody in Whit's Damsels In Distress, Ryan Paris's Dolce Vita, Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Matt Keeslar, Mackenzie Astin, and a Dean Martin song in The Last Days Of Disco.

It hardly needs mentioning, but not all science-fiction is created equal. Even as a term, it’s difficult to pin down exactly what constitutes sci-fi, especially in a medium like TV that can change so much from week to week or season to season. So when we took stock of the best TV shows from the past two decades, we turned to one unimpeachable source as a guide for what we should include in our list.
Thanks, Roman.
That’s not to say that a few of the shows might have an odd sword or two, but most of what we tried to single out here imagines a world markedly different from our own. Some take place in reimagined futures, while others take a sharper focus on the present with some key, otherworldly changes.
Given the wealth of shows in this genre, we opted not to include animated or unscripted series in this particular list.

As part of the ramp up to promote her terrific new HBO series “Girls” -- which we really can’t say enough good things about -- BAMcinematek in Brooklyn invited filmmaker Lena Dunham to program a series entitled “Hey, Girlfriend! Lena Dunham Presents” featuring a diverse slate of films all centered around female relationships. The series features little-seen gems like “Times Square” and “Girlfriends” as well as more established cult films like “Clueless,” “Mulholland Drive,” and Whit Stillman’s 1998 indie-classic “The Last Days of Disco,” which until today had been the filmmaker’s most recent feature (read our recent retrospective on the filmmaker here). If you’ve never seen it, ‘Disco’ stars at the time virtual unknowns (though never better) Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny as friends and roommates in early '80s New York. Featuring an ensemble cast including Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Beals and Stillman regular Chris Eigeman,...

Charlie: Do you know the film, "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise?" When I first saw that title, I though, "Finally, someone is going to tell the truth about the bourgeoisie." What a disappointment. It would be hard to imagine a less fair or accurate portrait.
Cynthia: Well of course, Bunuel is a surrealist. Despising the bourgeoisie is part of their credo.
Nick: (disgusted) Where do they get off?
Charlie: The truth is the bourgeoisie does have a lot of charm.
Nick: Of course it does, the surrealists were just a bunch of social climbers.

C: Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Scott Foley, Parker Posey, Patrick Dempsey, Lance Henriksen, Liev Schreiber, Emily Mortimer, Jenny McCarthy, Deon Richmond, Kelly Rutherford, Matt Keeslar, Heather Matarazzo, Jamie Kennedy, Roger Corman, Carrie Fisher
After a rash of murders on a Hollywood set echoing the events that took place in the first two Scream films, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is forced out of hiding to confront yet another ghost faced killer who is intent on making his own real life trilogy on the set of Stab 3.
The in jokes, the self referential humor, the little jabs, the cameo appearances - they're all here. The concept behind Scream 3 is clever and there's plenty of original ideas floating throughout the entire movie, but the film's main problem is that there is just too many characters, too many storylines, just too much of everything!

With a tagline of "Some secrets are better locked away", it's not too much of a stretch to wonder if 2006's Cold Storage should have remained locked away itself. Nonetheless, thanks to Lionsgate, come May 4th, we'll be able to see for ourselves whether or not that's indeed the case.

A nice companion piece to this news item , Lionsgate Home Entertainment announced it has acquired Cold Storage for a May 4 DVD debut. Synopsis: When a brutal car accident takes place in the desolate backcountry, the only onlooker is Clive, a lonely man who lives nearby in an isolated shack. As he approaches the scene, he sees the girl of his dreams, dead among the debris. Certain that she is "the one," Clive will do whatever it takes to keep her by his side. When the victim's sister and boyfriend arrive, they quickly become unwitting hostages. Joelle Carter (American Pie 2) and Matt Keeslar (Scream 3) star alongside Nick Searcy. Directed by Tony Elwood, the film has been sitting on the shelf since late-'06/early-'07 and has been traveling the film festival circuit....

Whit Stillman hasn't made a lot of films. In fact, there are only three: Metropolitan, Barcelona, and The Last Days of Disco. All filmed in the '90s, his trio of movies morphed from upper-class teen Manhattanites, to heading out into the international working world, and finally to a look into the end of disco. Unfortunately, the last was sadly overlooked because another big disco fest hit the big screen -- 54 -- which may have been terrible, but with the likes of Mike Myers and a big-name cast, it was the flick in the spotlight.
Nestled in the shadows was The Last Days of Disco, starring Chloe Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale as two young book editors who fill their nights with dance and banter while looking for romance. Each night, as they head to the club, they come across a myriad of faces, from the Stillman pro Chris Eigeman, to the likes of Mackenzie Astin,...

I had no idea what to expect from The Last Days of Disco. My experience with Kate Beckinsale began with Pearl Harbor and only goes back as far as Brokedown Palace (a film I don't even remember her in). Chloe Sevigny I didn't really know until 2003's Shattered Glass and have hardly gotten to know her since, outside of her role in Zodiac. On top of all that I had not seen a Whit Stillman feature. So to say I was approaching this one cold is an understatement. Actually, it was as if I was seeing Beckinsale and Sevigny for the very first time as they don't even resemble the actresses they have become, especially Beckinsale. Taking place in the early 1980s, The Last Days of Disco centers on Charlotte (Beckinsale) and Alice (Sevigny), two recent Ivy League college grads working in book publishing and spending their evenings in Manhattan's Studio 54-esque night club.

I had never heard of The Middleman, the comic book it was based on or creator-writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost) before I was given the job of reviewing Shout Factory’s DVD of the complete (and cancelled) series. To be up front, I wasn’t too enthused at the prospect of watching an ABC Family show that required me to view 12 episodes (nine-plus hours), listen to four commentaries and then have to finish it up with an entire disc of special features. In hindsight, well...it Was a tremendous amount of time to dedicate to a DVD review, but time well worth it. The Middleman is an entertaining, engaging, jolly, smile-inducing TV series made by genre fans for genre fans that has more references than the New York Public Library. If you don’t giggle or grin when you see Frank Herbert Junior High School in an episode, then this Isn’T the show for you.

The Middleman missed its target – but only in one way: its audience. Why The Middleman ended up on ABC Family I’ll never understand. Finally a show comes along that caters to the superhero-quipping, sci-fi-obsessed, movie-worshipping crowd and it goes almost completely unnoticed and unadvertised on a family oriented channel. The Middleman will become a cult classic – that much is almost guaranteed by having an episode inciting a “Nakatomi Plaza Protocol” – if word of its greatness ever manages to get out.
A disillusioned Generation Y temp worker has the opportunity of a lifetime dumped on her lap when an experiment at her current job goes out of control and a horrible monster is unleashed. Diving to safety, Wendy Watson (Natalie Morales) keeps the monster at bay until an unnamed man in a plain gray jacket shows up to dispatch the creature from whence it came. He disappears as quickly as...

When it comes to great shows that were canned before audiences got a chance to fully appreciate them, “The Middleman” can easily fight its way to the top of the list. This hokey comedy about world domination and a secret organization that would make S.H.I.E.L.D. jealous is sexy, irreverent and downright fun at every turn. “The Middleman” stars Matt Keeslar as The Middleman, a modern-day superhero tasked with saving the world from the most ridiculous super-villains, aliens, monsters and just about every possible campy-bad guy you can imagine. Natalie Morales stars as Wendy Watson, The Middleman’s trusted sidekick who gives new meaning to the word naughty principal or sexy geek for that matter. Wendy Watson, or DubDub (Ww) as her friends call her, is a comic geek and the show’s version of Robin, The Boy Wonder. From the moment you start watching The Middleman,...

If Joss Whedon and Amy Sherman-Palladino collaborated on a secret-agent/science-fiction/superhero script, then handed it off to be directed by John Carpenter, with cinematography by Barry Sonnenfeld, the results might look a lot like The Middleman, a wonderfully eccentric TV series that ran for 12 episodes last summer on ABC Family before disappearing into the rarefied realm where “unjustly ignored” cultural artifacts await their promotion to “cult favorite” status. Created by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, The Middleman stars Natalie Morales as a lovelorn art student who gets recruited by straight-arrow covert operative Matt Keeslar to join an organization known as “The ...

As TV series have a very short life span these days, such was the case with the shortly ran ABC Family original TV series The Middleman. Debuting in June of 2008, the show ran for a mere 12 episodes; not evening filming the final 13th due to low ratings. Created by Lost writer/producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, the show sparked with originality and absurdness that science-fiction and horror fans alike felt akin to, but still seeming to warm the most typical of teen angst hearts out there.
With a mixture of Men In Black meets Get Smart fathering a mid 60’s The Avengers feel and mothered to The X-Files, Middleman is a breath of fresh air as each episode is a full-hour-chocked-pack adventure! In other words, this explosive plot can also be boiled down best, as stated by the Middleman himself, “We're international consultants that solve exotic problems for corporations, individuals, and even governments.

For many, the day "The Middleman" was canceled was a dark, dark day. I'm one of the many went through Middle-Withdrawal, so when I saw this Thursday (July 23) Comic-Con table read for the episode titled "The Doomsday Armageddon Apocalypse," I think I may have squeed. A loud round of applause from a packed room greeted creator and narrator for today Javier Grillo-Marxuach, cast members Matt Keeslar, Natalie Morales, Mary Pat Gleason Brit Morgan, Jake Smollett, Brendan Hines (wearing an awesome Tron cycle shit), Mark Sheppard (aka TV's Samuel L. Jackson), and writers Sarah Watson, Margaret Dunlap, and Andy Reeser,...

There should be a warning label on the DVD boxed set of "The Middleman": "May cause extreme elation." The ABC Family show depicted a clean-cut hero called the Middleman (Matt Keeslar) and his assistant, Wendy Watson (Natalie Morales) fighting dastardly threats from all corners of the galaxy on behalf of O2STK (Organization Too Secret to Know). This delightful concoction, which comes out on DVD Tuesday, was truly one of those shows that the whole family could enjoy. Sci Fi, the cable network that becomes Syfy July 7, has announced its roster of panels for San Diego Comic-Con, the annual pop-culture fest that begins July 23. However the cast -- including stars Matt Keeslar and Natalie Morales as well as creator Javier Grillo-Marxuach -- will reassemble at Comic-Con to do a table read of the final episode of the show, which did not get made (it was turned into a graphic novel from Viper...

Parting with a favorite television series is hard enough when a show concludes by design, but fans of ABC Family’s “The Middleman” were left high and dry when the series was canceled last year. Fortunately for those attending this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con International, io9 reports the series’ stars are slated to perform a reading of the final, unmade episode “The Doomsday Armageddon Apocalypse.”
Based on the Viper Comics series by writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach (”Lost”) and Eisner-nominated artist Les McClaine (”Jonny Crossbones”), “The Middleman” adaptation was originally planned to run for 13 episodes on ABC Family Chanel, but was canceled after 12.
Fortunately for those with lingering questions, the Comic-Con panel will provide a kind of synchronized multimedia send-off to the entire franchise with Grillo-Marxuach, McClaine and artist Armando M. Zanker releasing the final comic book installment as the television series by Shout!Factory debuts on DVD and the “lost...

Following in the shoes of actors like John Barrymore, Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, Matt Keeslar, and Sean Young, Keanu Reeves is going to tap into his dark side. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is getting a modern re-telling, and Reeves is going to star as the iconic character.
No, this is not the Guillermo del Toro picture -- he's got his hands full with Katie Holmes and hobbits. However, it is being made by the same studio (Universal). They must really love the story. As we all know by now, Stevenson's story focuses on a doctor whose science unleashes a darker and more evil side of himself (although I think it was there to begin with -- Jekyll is a damn creepy name). Obviously, this won't be a gender-bending story like Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde, but...

Unfortunately she hits a bird and is fatally injured in the process, attracting the attention of simple minded mountain man Clive (an astonishing turn by Nick Searcy). Though ABC Family has cancelled The Middleman after a single season on the air, the adventures aren't over just yet.
The Middleman follows a straight-shooter hero (Matt Keeslar), his newbie assistant Wendy (Natalie Morales), and their fantastic adventures together. Other characters are played by Brit Morgan, Mary Pat Gleason, Jake Smollett, Brendan Hines, Drew Tyler Bell and Sean Davis.
Based on a comic book from Javier Grillo-Marxuach and Les McClaine, the TV show aired from June 16th to September 1st, 2008 on ABC Family. As creative as the series content is, the ratings weren't all that fantastic. Due to costs, a planned 13th episode wasn't shot and some of the money was funneled into episode 12.
With mediocre ratings, it was suspected that the series wouldn't be coming back for season two. Last month, ABC Family made it official and announced that the series had indeed been cancelled. Though many viewers are...

You know that geeky t-shirt that was popular some years ago "Joss Whedon is My Master Now"? I should have bought one at the time. We're now 3 episodes into Whedon's latest Dollhouse and even though I'm still not so sure about it I get excited each time. Dollhouse isn't close to the best thing on TV (For me Mad Men and Battlestar Galactica fight for that honor with Friday Night Lights and 30 Rock as honorable mentions) but I'm into it for better and worse. Hopefully for better.

We've suspected it for awhile but the cancellation's now official. ABC Family's freshman series, The Middleman, won't be back for a second year. As a network spokesperson tells PopWrap, "ABC Family has decided not to renew the series for a second season." Fortunately for fans, the story's not over just yet. The characters are returning to their roots.

She lives with her best friend (Brit Morgan) and works temp jobs. While working at a lab, science experiment goes wrong and she's saved by The Middleman (Matt Keeslar). There's not much that I love more than the comedic mind of Christopher Guest. No man, not even retro Mel Brooks, has made me cry with laughter like Guest -- the wacky dancing of Corky St. Clair, the dysfunctional yuppiedom of the Swans, the bleary sadness of Mitch Cohen, and the plastic surgery of Marilyn Hack. But For Your Consideration might be the end.

ABC Family brood growing
ABC has picked up the light drama pilot The Middleman to series. Also picked up to series is an untitled drama project from 7th Heaven creator Brenda Hampton.
Sources said ABC Family also is ordering to series the pilot Roommates, subject to recasting one of the roles.
Meanwhile, the cable network has opted not to renew the drama series Wildfire beyond the current fourth season.
ABC Family also is said to be high on the pilot Samurai Girl and the sophomore series Lincoln Heights, but no decisions had been made by press time.
All ABC Family orders except the Hampton project are said to be cast pickups, with details about production schedules and launch dates in flux because of the writers strike.
Middleman, from writer-producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, stars Natalie Morales as a twentysomething struggling artist recruited by a secret agency to fight comic book-type villains and Matt Keeslar as the title character, a sci-fi superhero who serves as her guide.
The Hampton project is described as a teen relationship series similar in sensibility to Juno. The show is said to have received a six-episode order.

ABC Family's 'Middleman' gets its man, women
Matt Keeslar and Natalie Morales have been tapped to star in ABC Family's light drama pilot "The Middleman".
Mary Pat Gleason also has been cast in the one-hour project, which is based on "Medium" writer-producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach's graphic novels for Viper Comics that were illustrated by Les McClaine. The project was ordered to pilot last month (HR 9/14).
"Middleman" centers on Wendy Watson (Morales), a twentysomething struggling artist recruited by a secret agency to fight comic book-type villains. Keeslar will play the title character, a sci-fi superhero who serves as her guide. Gleason will play Ida, the robotic gatekeeper and veteran assistant to Keeslar.
Grillo-Marxuach, co-executive producer on "Medium", is exec producing "Middleman".
Keeslar recently completed filming the ABC Family movie "Snowglobe", opposite Christina Milian, and next appears in the movie "Deadly Suspicion" for Lifetime. He is repped by Domain Talent and manager Holly Shelton at Precision Entertainment.
Morales' credits include CBS' "CSI: Miami". She is repped by Diverse Talent and managers Ken Treusch and Vincent Nastri at Bleecker Street Entertainment.
Mary Pat Gleason also has been cast in the one-hour project, which is based on "Medium" writer-producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach's graphic novels for Viper Comics that were illustrated by Les McClaine. The project was ordered to pilot last month (HR 9/14).

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas for Christina Milian.
The actress-singer is attached to star alongside Matt Keeslar ("Scream 3") in the ABC Family telefilm "Snowglobe", which begins production at month's endjuly in Calgary, Canada.
"Snowglobe", one of two original telefilms debuting this year during ABC Family's "25 Days of Christmas", follows a woman who finds she can magically leave the real world behind for the Christmas-themed dreamland in her grandmother's snow globecq. Keeslar plays a love interest she encounters inside the globe.

Art School Confidential
PARK CITY -- With broad strokes and the most garish colors, "Art School Confidential" lampoons the poseurs, artistes, druggies, burnouts and assorted other ass-pirants who make up an arts institute. With an "Animal House"-ish deportment, "Art School" likely will entertain a sophomoric audience and etch some winning college-kid figures, but art house audiences will be disappointed by its paint-by-numbers storytelling.
Splashed with almost every genre -- romance, comedy, mystery -- this satirical sendup centers on Jerome Max Minghella), a freshman art school student. Fresh-faced from the "burbs," Jerome aspires to become the "greatest artist of the 21st century." Picasso is his role model -- not in painting or sculpture but in sexual conquests. In fact, he's been inspired to attend the Strathmore Institute by the photo of a pretty nude arts model (Sophia Myles) in its brochure.
The institute is truly an asylum for affected students and pedantic instructors. Compared to his classmates, who are largely depressed, punked-out and hostile, Jerome is somewhat "normal," which, of course, makes his work "inaccessible." Not surprisingly, Jerome's most inspired moments come from painting Audrey, who is somewhat moved by his haunting depiction. Despite a friendly rapport, Audrey totes emotional baggage: Like women who are not in institutes, she rejects Jerome and goes for hunky bad-boy Jonah (Matt Keeslar), who turns out to be an undercover cop.
Dolloped with savagely dark smears against those in the "arts," the satire is so steeped in caricature and so gummed up with stereotypes that its comedic potential is diluted. The character palette itself is dull: The varied art students here pretty much fall into a narrow spectrum of self-centered, untalented egoists.
Still, there are some sharp-witted broadsides in Daniel Clowes' script: Salvos against the pretentiousness of gallery showings, New York Times reviews and professorial pomposity abound. Unfortunately, the satire seems to be spray-painted, rather than intelligently etched, into the film's overwrought fabric.
While it is admirable that John Malkovich and Steve Buscemi have joined the production, which must have made it bankable, they have posed for these character portraits before: One is epicurean and reptilian, while the other is brash and manipulative. Wanna guess which is which? That said, they're both very funny.
Supporting players exhibit some strong showings: Joel David Moore as a smart-ass student, Jack Ong as a burned-out professor and Jim Broadbent as a drunken never-been.
Under director Terry Zwigoff's heavy comic hand, the technical contributions are similarly overarched, including Howard Cummings' high-trash production design.
