If you were interested in importing Japanese games in the late 80s, or if you're just into far-eastern retro games today, you may have stumbled on Kato-chan & Ken-chan - a platform game released for the PC Engine 30 years ago this month. Released in America as Jj & Jeff for the TurboGrafx-16 (the console's name on those shores), it quickly vanished without trace, largely because the system only sold in relatively small numbers.

The Episode | “Serious Mothering” (Feb. 26, 2017)
The Performance | Oh, how we’ve missed this Reese Witherspoon. The living and breathing firecracker from the Election/Legally Blonde era who would toggle from bitchy to emboldened to entitled to vulnerable in the span of seconds. The one who could deliver a well-crafted one-liner with Bette Davis-like precision before melting your heart with a simple glance.
Luckily, with HBO’s Big Little Lies, the Oscar winner has triumphantly returned to her darkly comedic wheelhouse, and that was especially so with Sunday’s second episode.

Two couples got their swerve on in this week’s Nashville. One was a foregone conclusion. The other was an abomination.
Yeah, you heard me, Layla. Abomination! I could maybe get behind your plan to seduce Juliette’s ex-husband if you… had an actual plan to seduce Juliette’s husband. But your to-do list seems like an endless loop of mope, sulk, stalk off and then glom onto Avery’s lips whenever they’re within smooching distance. Even worse: This trajectory seems to be working for you.

Amour Fou (Jessica Hausner)
An ecstatically original work of film-history-philosophy with a digital-cinema palette of acutely crafted compositions. Amour Fou seamlessly blends together the paintings of Vermeer, the acting of Bresson, and the psychological undercurrents of a Dostoevsky novel. It is an intensely thrilling and often slyly comic work that manages to combine a passionately dispassionate love story of the highest order with a larger socio-historical examination of a new era of freedom, and the tragedy beset by...

The cast of "Community" has come a long way from where they were when the comedy premiered on NBC in 2009 to where they are now as "Community" begins its latest rebirth on Yahoo. Not to take anything away from the career arcs of Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi or Alison Brie, but Jim Rash's journey from comic day player perhaps best known for a resemblance to Moby to beloved supporting performer, Oscar-winning screenwriter and acclaimed indie director seems like the biggest leap. As the cast of "Community" has shifted in recent years, Rash's Dean Pelton has become increasingly central and as Rash's creative profile has grown, thanks to "The Descendants" and "The Way Way Back," he was able to write an episode in The Lost Dan Harmon-less Season. The sixth "Community" season begins on Tuesday (March 17) on Yahoo and Rash has been able to add TV directing to his...

Community comes back January 2, and in typical Community fashion, the latest teaser is a meta spoof of another show's teaser style. If you thought Mad Men's promos were maddeningly vague and impossible to parse — and they are, by design — then you will enjoy this equally informationless yet very intense Community promo. Letting Jeff be Don Draper seems sort of weak, though. We already know Abed does a killer Draper! We'll assume for these purposes that Troy is Ken Cosgrove, because who else at Sterling Cooper and Partners would care about staging a robot fight?...

In Bad Milo!, Ken Marino has a problem. The stresses of his life and constant stomach issues manifest in the form of a pint-sized creature living inside of his intestines. And when Ken's complications worsen, said creature introduces itself to the world by crawling out of his ass and destroying anyone who poses a threat.
The film - a ridiculous and hilarious tale - is the spawn of director and co-writer Jacob Vaughan, an assistant editor on Mark and Jay Duplass' Cyrus and Jeff, Who Lives at Home and the editor of Black Rock. And, thanks to his previous collaborations with the Duplass brothers, Bad Milo! was able to become a reality.
Tonight, the film is going to be screening at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal and in our continuing coverage of the fest, we spoke to Vaughan about his creature feature debut which also stars Gillian Jacobs,...

Today sees the limited release of Rob Zombie's The Lords of Salem, which means we've reached part five of this five-part retrospective which began with Zombie's 2003 feature House of 1000 Corpses. I hope you've enjoyed this look back at Zombie's career as much as I enjoyed interviewing him and writing about it. If you haven't already, please give the previous installments in this series a look, I've included all the links at the bottom of this final post. The Lords of Salem Zombie's newest film is The Lords of Salem, an exceedingly moody slice of psychedelic blasphemy. Never one to make the same film twice, Zombie's latest opus represents an evolution toward more cerebral, yet equally visceral scares. Relying less on hulking or twisted degenerates to deliver the shocks, Lords has a decidedly feminine bent to its particular brand of creeping menace. It also is his first film to...

Cambridge, Mass. — Sean Penn remembers smelling dead bodies when he arrived in Haiti after the earthquake.
But now there's music in those same streets even as the country faces many years of rebuilding, the Academy Award-winning actor said Tuesday.
Penn said "extraordinary" changes have happened since the Jan. 12, 2010, natural disaster killed more than 300,000 people and left about 1.5 million homeless.
He also called the Haitian people resilient in his remarks in a forum at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
The actor is an ambassador-at-large for Haiti's president and CEO of aid group J/P Haitian Relief Organization, which started with a goal of bringing painkillers to earthquake victims. It became an agency that manages a camp for displaced people and works to resettle them. It also does other aid work such as clearing rubble, repairing damaged homes and running a community center and clinics.

Two new biopics of the master of suspense depict him as a bully who abused his leading ladies. But where does the truth lie?
The appearance of two new films about Alfred Hitchcock, widely considered to be the greatest of Britain's filmmakers, is a reminder that there was a time when he was also considered lovable. His unmistakable profile, his deadpan, Droopy Dog style, and his sense of humour helped make Hitch a star as well as a director.
Then, in 1983, came Donald Spoto's biography, The Dark Side of Genius. Spoto revealed that Hitchcock had harassed actor Tippi Hedren on the set of 1963's The Birds to the point of physical and psychological collapse. During the filming of the followup, Marnie, Hedren claimed that he also "made an overt sexual proposition", and when she resisted "became threatening", saying he would ruin her career. He never forgave her for turning him down,...

Rob Zombie’s Rob Zombie's The Lords of Salem (review) made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and as soon as the credits rolled, fans couldn’t stop talking about the film that managed to raise more questions than answers!
The solid performances from Rob Zombie’s wife, Sheri Moon Zombie as doomed DJ, Heidi and co-star Jeff Daniel Phillips (last seen getting butchered in Zombie’s Halloween 2) as follow DJ, Herman Whitey.
Dread Central was lucky enough to get an opportunity to talk to the affable stars about their roles, their own reactions about the premiere and if they themselves understood what Rob Zombie was setting out for in his ambitious and abstract horror film about the Salem witches.
It was a pleasant surprise to discover that Sheri Moon Zombie is nothing like the characters she plays onscreen and despite what horror fans may believe,...

The actor hated the attention-seeking celebrities in Haiti. Which is why, this week, he told Vanity Fair all about his time there
We end on a personal note today. A while back, word came through on the LiS hotline that Sean Penn was in Haiti (above, with Ban Ki-Moon) and had banned Twitter because he was so sick of attention-seeking visiting celebrities Twittering photos of themselves with cute little brown children (so thin!) instead of, you know, doing anything. LiS was extremely taken with this story: a celebrity working for charity who appeared more focused on the charity than the publicity potential? It's like encountering a Republican Us senator who has never visited www.hotrentboys.com.
So we asked if we could have more details and Sean's people, to use the medical term, "flipped out". Penn didn't want any media attention for his hard work in Haiti. As Groucho Marx feels about club membership rules,...
