Best remembered as Paddy Fleming, the shop steward from the popular sitcom The Rag Trade (1961), frequently yelling her catchphrase "Everybody out!". In real life, she was an avid Equity trade unionist and member of the Labour Party.

The first woman to play the traditionally male lead in "The Caretaker" by Harold Pinter.

Awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1975 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her union and welfare work.

Made a film called "Liselotte in the Palace of Versailles" which was of one of Miriam's one woman shows with the audience made up of many of Liselottes relatives. Due to this and an inexperienced crew, when something went wrong with the sound recording she was just allowed to continue with her performance instead of cutting and restarting. She was called back the next day to do it again only the whole thing was done badly so consequently the film was never released.

Spent the last part of 1964 and most of 65 working in Australia where she went blonde.

Her father was a barrister on trade union law and died on 1976.
