Back in 1994, long before he was cast to play Jaime Lannister in the hit series Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau made his feature film debut in writer/director Ole Bornedal’s thriller Nightwatch, where he played a character named Martin, a law student who takes a job working as a night watchman at The Department of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen just as the place starts filling up with the bodies of a serial killer’s victims. The Göteborg Film Festival has unveiled the 53 Nordic Films that will take part in the latest edition of the Nordic Film Market, running February 2 – 5. Scroll down for the list.

The line-up consists of 17 completed feature films, 15 works in progress, 11 films in development presented at the market’s co-financing platform Discovery, and another 10 features in development from up-and-coming Swedish creators at Talent to Watch.

The 2023 edition of Nordic Film Market will comprise a full on-site event in Göteborg alongside digital screenings on the festival’s dedicated industry platform. This year the festival has said close to 500 invited buyers, distributors, sales agents, producers, festival programmers, and other key industry delegates from 32 countries are expected to attend.

Elsewhere, the 17th edition of the TV Drama Vision summit will run February 1–2.

Göteborg will run January 27 – February 5. As previously announced, Holy Spider breakout Zar Amir Ebrahimi will head the jury of the festival’s Nordic Competition.

TrustNordisk has closed North American deals for its two animated features, “Just Super” and “Little Allan — The Human Antenna.”

Both feature have sold to Viva Pictures Distribution for North American distribution. “Just Super” has also sold to Pack Magic for Spain.

“Just Super” is directed by Rasmus A. Sivertsen, who previously directed Berlinale-screener “Louis & Luca — Mission to the Moon” as well as Shanghai Festival player “In the Forest of Huckybucky.” The feature comes from Scandinavia’s biggest animation studio Qvisten Animation and was produced by Åshild Ramborg (“The Ash Land”) and Stian Tveiten (“Congo”). Carter Goodrich (“Coco”) did the initial character design for “Just Super.”

TrustNordisk has sold animated features Little Allan – The Human Antenna and Just Super to multiple territories on the eve of the Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm).

South Korea’s Entermode has picked up Little Allan – The Human Antenna, which has also sold to Hungary (Ads Service), Benelux (In The Air) and the Middle East (Oceana Studios). It was previously acquired for France (Kmbo), Albania and former Yugoslavia (Investacommerce), Poland (Vivarto) and the Baltics (Estin Film).

The flick started shooting in Denmark earlier this week and is a sequel to Bornedal’s 1994 Nightwatch film, which followed a student who took a job as a night watchman at a morgue and begins to discover clues that implicate him as the suspect of a series of murders. The film played a host of international festivals, including Cannes, Toronto, and Berlin. A US remake was also made with Ewan McGregor and Nick Nolte.

The sequel will also follow a young student called Emma who has taken the job as the night watch in a forensic department and tries to investigate the dark past of her parents.

The original Nightwatch had more than 465,000 admissions in Denmark and played in Cannes Critics’ Week, Toronto and Berlinale. A US remake starred Ewan McGregor and Nick Nolte. “Little Allan – The Human Antenna” marks Danish film Amalie Naesby Fick’s follow up to her commercially successful debut “The Incredible Story of The Giant Pear,” which premiered in the the Generation Kplus section at Berlin in 2018. She also had her drama series “Sex” selected for the Berlinale Series.

The film takes place during summer vacation, when introverted, 11-year old Allan starts acting as a human antenna for his old neighbor, who thinks a huge invasion fleet from the outer space is on its way. When the antenna construction collapses, Allan is only barely saved by the alien girl Britney, who is doing a school project about the primitive human race.

Oscar and double Palme d’Or winning director Bille August is attending the Göteborg Film Festival for a Director’s Talk and the gala screening of his psycho-drama “The Pact”.

He will also pitch at the adjoining Nordic Film Market (Feb. 3-6), the work in progress of his upcoming Danish pic “The Kiss”.

August spoke exclusively to Variety about “The Kiss,” his enduring interest in the complexity of human beings, book-to-screen adaptations and his belief in the big screen experience.

Loosely based on Stefan Zweig’s novel “Beware of Pity and transposed from an Austrian to a Danish setting, “The Kiss” is a romantic drama set in 1913. The helmer has reunited with “A Fortunate Man”’s lead Espen Smed, cast as cavalry officer trainee Anton. Introduced to Baron von Løvenskjold’s daughter Edith, a wheelchair user following an accident, Anton is attracted to her, but unsure if his feelings are of pity or true love.

Starring BAFTA winner Sofie Gråbøl (The Killing), the Danish-language film is set over the course of one week and follows two sisters, Inger and Ellen, and how their relationship is challenged on an anticipated coach trip to Paris.

The Nordic organisation has set aside a total of 17.159 million Norwegian crowns (circa €1.57 million) in production, dubbing and distribution bursaries. Yesterday, the Nordisk Film & TV Fond announced the beneficiaries of its latest slate of funding. On this occasion, the Oslo-based body has set aside 16.8 million Norwegian crowns (circa €1.53 million) in production support and 359,000 Norwegian crowns in dubbing and distribution grants. In total, the organisation will back two features and five high-end TV series. Copenhagen-based LevelK has acquired world sales rights for the Danish TV documentary series Scandinavian Star.

The six-part series examines one of the largest unsolved crimes in recent Scandinavian history: the catastrophic fire on board the Ms Scandinavian Star ferry in April 1990, when it was sailing from Norway to Denmark. Some 159 people died. Investigations have pointed to arson – but many questions remain unanswered.

The series will use archive material, new interviews and reconstructions.

LevelK has closed a number of deals on Christian Tafdrup’s buzzy Danish relationship story A Horrible Woman.

The film has now sold to China (Lemon Tree), Taiwan (Encore), Australia (Palace) and Czech Republic (Film Europe).

The dark comedy has been a local hit in Denmark, where it has crossed 167,000 admissions. It won two Robert Awards: best female in a lead role (Amanda Collin) and best script.

The story is about a woman making life miserable for her boyfriend (played by Anders Juul), as seen from the man’s point of view.

LevelK has now sold the film to more than 150 countries, including recent deals to the UK and Ireland (Kaleidoscope), Turkey (FilmArti) and Portugal (Films4you).

The film, a hit at the Danish box office with more than 230,000 admissions, won two prizes at Denmark’s Robert awards for Best Children’s Film and Best Adapted Script. It also has a market screening in Berlin on Saturday 16.

Ahead of Cannes, LevelK has closed a raft of deals on the upcoming Danish 3D animation The Incredible Story of the Giant Pear.

The film has been acquired for more than 20 territories including France and Benelux (Ninety-Seven Film Production), Korea (Yejilim Entertainment), Hungary and Romania (Ads Service), Poland (Vivarto), Middle East (Empire Networks), Estonia (Estin Film), Bulgaria (Pro Films), Croatia and Slovenia (Radar), and Iran (Century 21).

At the Cannes market on Friday (May 19), LevelK will host director Philip Einstein Lipski to discuss the project in two exclusive events at the Scandinavian Terrace.

Ruben Ostlund got buyers and festival programmers hopping with excitement in Goteborg as he presented the first footage from his forthcoming fifth feature The Square during the festival’s work in progress pitches.

Ostlund screened about seven minutes from one scene of the new film, during which a controversial performance artist (played by Terry Notary) makes guests at a black-tie art gala very uncomfortable. “You know I love awkward situations,” the director said.

Goteborg’s audience of industry experts commented that they were impressed by the confidence of the unnerving scene, which showed Ostlund working on a bigger scale even than his last hit, Force Majeure.

At a festival session later for the public, Ostlund previewed a second clip from the film, in which a museum director (Claes Bang) delivers a self-centered video apology to a boy he had accused of being a thief.

The film, which LevelK launched sales on at Efm in Berlin last month, has been sold to Korea (Yejilim Entertainment), Iran (Century 21), Hungary and Romania (Ads Service Ltd.) and Estonia (Estin Film).

The Incredible Story of the Giant Pear is based on a children’s book by Jakob Martin Strid, which will be published in China later this year having previously been published in eight languages, selling sold more than 100,000 copies.

The Danish Oscar committee has shortlisted three films, one of which will be submitted as Denmark’s official entry for the 87th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

They include Niels Arden Oplev’s Speed Walking, Pernille Fischer Christensen’s Someone to Love You and Nils Malmros’ Sorrow and Joy.

The films were chosen from a longlist of 18 features and four documentaries. The committee is expected to name the final candidate on Sept 18.

Denmark has had a strong showing at the Oscars in recent years, with two nominations and a win for Susanne Bier’s In A Better World in 2011.

The announcement of the five foreign films nominated for the Oscar will be made on Jan 15, 2015. The awards ceremony will be held on Feb 22, 2015 in the Dolby Theatre, Hollywood.
