If you’re anything like this TV Fanatic, you’ve already developed an addiction to High Potential and need your fix. How dare ABC keep our favorite eccentric cleaning lady away for a whole week!
All joking aside, this show is phenomenal without resorting to crazy gimmicks or overwrought dialogue and plotting. The strength of the series lies in its level of talent.
High Potential doesn’t just boast the fantastic talent of Kaitlin Olson, but a creator who wrote and had a hand in some of history’s biggest shows and movies.
(Carlos Lopez-Calleja/Disney)
Drew Goddard, creator of High Potential, also wrote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost. If that doesn’t impress you, he also wrote The Martian and World War Z. Still not enough? He directed Cabin in the Woods!

Matthew Gray Gubler is returning to TV!
While that means he won’t be returning to Criminal Minds, I daresay this might be better.
After entertaining us for so long as part of an ensemble, he’ll now headline an upcoming CBS procedural that is currently titled Einstein. That title is subject to change, but the name recognition might work to its benefit.
(Valerie MacOn/Afp via Getty Images)
According to Deadline, Gubler will star in and produce the new show.
The good news with Einstein is plentiful. It hails from Monk creator and executive producer Andy Breckman and director and executive producer Randy Zisk.
This is excellent news for Criminal Minds fans who miss fan favorite Gubler on the small screen.

Whoever said you needed aliens and ray guns to have a thriving space odyssey series? Not The Ark! This show doesn’t need the CGI gimmicks to deliver incredible storytelling with characters who feel like friends.
This was the epitome of a finale. From start to finish, I was on the edge of my seat, fully enthralled. Hats off to Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner. This was a roller coaster of an ending.
The Ark took a lot of chances with the story this season, and despite a few pitfalls, only the episodes and choices that left a lasting impression are remembered.
(Aleksandar Letic/Ark TV Holdings, Inc./Syfy)
This finale perfectly balanced between leaving things open for the future and a soft close in case The Ark doesn’t receive a renewal.
After that finale, though, Syfy would be crazy not to get on board for another season!

The boys are back in space! The wonderful showrunners of The Ark were gracious enough to stop by TV Fanatic for another chat. With an interview before the pilot and another before the finale, we have come full circle!
The series has made incredible strides in diversifying its episodes, and it has paid off. Despite a hiccup or two, the show has maintained its course through character development.
Honestly, the characters are why we signed up for The Ark, right? It’s all about human interaction and how the crew of The Ark One handles finding a home planet amidst all the chaos.
(Aleksandar Letic/Ark TV Holdings, Inc./Syfy)
Not to be a messy viewer, but I think we can all agree that if this story were happening in reality, there would be far more rounds of musical beds.
Thankfully, The Ark is in good hands with Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner!

Yes!! Sugar has been renewed at Apple TV+.
If you haven’t noticed yet, the streamer takes big swings on screen.
Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t. But Apple’s deep pockets allow them to take chances you won’t find elsewhere on TV.
(Courtesy of Apple TV+)
Sugar was one of the two best detective series to air in some time, and Apple TV+ has faith that the story can continue.
Colin Farrell is a very busy man. He’s currently playing Oz Cobb on the HBO series The Penguin, but he’s got enough energy and talent to star in two shows.
In the Apple TV+ series, Farrell plays John Sugar, a private detective who is incredibly compassionate toward his clients and everyone else.

Oh. My. God. Has your pulse slowed down yet? Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 5 just hit us with the most nerve-wracking, heart-pounding hour of the entire season — maybe even the entire series.
If you weren’t on the edge of your seat, screaming at the screen, you weren’t paying attention.
Holy hell. Holy hell. Holy hell.
Whelan’s dirty little secret. Harkness and his ruthless mindgames. Flyte versus the Terminator. Lamb versus David. And Ho versus a bot?
(Apple TV+)
Yeah, there was a bit of humor packed into this relentless hour, but make no mistake — this was Slow Horses at its most intense. And yes, once again, River found himself in trouble!
Let’s catch our breath and break down the madness.
No One Will Miss You, Molly
Within minutes of “Grave Danger,” the tone was set, and it escalated the moment Molly opened the door to reveal Frank Harkness.

They were the slaps heard around the world on Tell Me Lies Season 2 Episode 6! Do people actually play slap-shot? That seems like a surefire way to end some friendships!
Granted, most of these characters are already on shaky ground with each other. It seems like the writers wanted to find the most volatile way to ruin Thanksgiving.
Tell Me Lies is not pulling any punches, and neither is Lucy! This episode was supercharged with high-flying hormones and emotions to the max! It’s no wonder some of these characters are not doing great academically.
(Josh Stringer/Disney)
That said, the series excels at sucking viewers right into the squabbles and underhanded attempts to ruin lives and reputations. It’s a wonder that any of them showed up at Bree’s wedding in 2015.

Roland Emmerich's "Stargate" was a moderate box office success when it hit theaters back in 1994, making almost $200 million on a $55 million budget. The movie was undeniably helped by the presence of Kurt Russell, who played Colonel Jack O'Neill, a U.S. Air Force Special Operations officer who's tasked with leading a team through the titular portal into unknown corners of the universe. Another thing working in the film's favor was its PG-13 rating, which enabled a larger audience to watch Emmerich's sci-fi stylings than if it had been hit with a full R-rating.
While there was talk of a sequel, and indeed an entire trilogy at the time, it seems "Stargate" wasn't quite a big enough hit to warrant such things. Instead, the film received a spin-off TV series starring MacGuyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson, in place of Russell, who refused to return as O'Neill. Thus, series co-creators Brad Wright...

When "Stargate" debuted in 1994, it was a modest hit. Roland Emmerich's film made $196 million on a $55 million budget, turning a decent enough profit and establishing what would become a surprisingly long-running franchise. That franchise would not play out on the big screen, however. Instead "Stargate" spawned a slew of TV shows, which focused on Stargate command sending out various crews to explore forgotten and mysterious corners of the universe using the titular portals.
The first, best-known, and longest-running of these series was "Stargate Sg-1," which tapped MacGuyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson, to play Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil — the role played by Kurt Russell in Emmerich's movie. Show creators Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner also brought in Amanda Tapping to play the United States Air Force captain Samantha Carter — a member of O'Neil's crew tasked with exploring the universe and fending off assorted alien threats.

In Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil (played by a brilliant Kurt Russell) is as blunt as it gets. When linguist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is invited to assist with the Stargate mission, O'Neil is frank about his disdain for an outsider involved in such a top-secret mission and exhibits little empathy when Jackson is forced to deal with an ancient civilization alone. However, when things go south, O'Neil is the first to dive into the jaws of danger, guns blazing, taking the initiative to save Jackson from the clutches of the malicious alien, Ra (Jaye Davidson). "Give my regards to King Tut, a**hole!," he yells before crushing an elevator on top of Ra's men to buy enough time for Jackson to get Sha'uri (Mili Avital) to safety.

When a beloved, long-running sci-fi series is abruptly canceled, like Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner's "Stargate Sg-1," it is natural for the fanbase to feel festering discontent. Premiering on Showtime in 1997, "Stargate Sg-1" aired its series finale in 2007, just a few days after its milestone episode — titled "200" — was released, which celebrated the show's tendency to swerve towards incredibly eccentric ideas that somehow always found a way to stick the landing. Of course, Roland Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi adventure film "Stargate" had sown the seeds for the franchise (despite plans for two more films falling through), granting fans the unique opportunity to unravel the mysteries surrounding the titular artifact through a spin-off series that ran for almost 10 years.
So, what was "Stargate Sg-1" about? The series picks up roughly a year after the events in Emmerich's movie, by which point the titular artifact has become common knowledge among the masses and...

Prepare to board Season 2 of The Ark. Set 100 years into the future where a planetary colonization mission goes awry. After Proxima B exploded in the Syfy show’s finale, whoever is left of the Ark One crew must not only find a way to survive but continue to their mission for a planet to inhabit. At the helm is Lt. Sharon Garnet (Christie Burke), who remained alive during the initial blasts alongside Lt. Spencer Lane (Reece Ritchie), Lt. James Brice (Richard Fleeshman), and Alicia Nevins (Stacey Read). Through the fight for survival, they must depend on the help of Ark 15 and its devious leader Evelyn Maddox (Jelena Stupljanin). Going into Season 2, there are questions of who else from Ark One survived and how they may get back on course to finding a new home to inhabit. Here Burke and co-creators and showrunners Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner tease what’s to come.

This post contains spoilers for the "Stargate" franchise.
Roland Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi drama "Stargate" posits an intriguing premise. An ancient ring-shaped device excavated during an archaeological expedition in Giza turns out to be a two-way portal connecting similar devices on distant plants, using a wormhole as a means to transport people. The film's elaborate plot gradually reveals that extraterrestrial beings enslaved parts of the human civilization, and used the Stargate device to trap them in their home planets across the galaxy. Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner's beloved series "Stargate Sg-1" builds its foundation on the film's lore, expanding a dystopian world where military organizations on Earth use the Stargate to free the enslaved humans and protect the planet from a vicious alien race known as the Goa'uld.

Our journey into the great unknown will continue.
Syfy’s newest original hit series The Ark has been renewed for a second season. Created by Dean Devlin, The Ark takes place 100 years in the future when planetary colonization missions have begun as a necessity to help secure the survival of the human race.
The first of these missions on a spacecraft known as Ark One encounters a catastrophic event causing massive destruction and loss of life.
With more than a year left to go before reaching their target planet, a lack of life-sustaining supplies and loss of leadership, the remaining crew must become the best versions of themselves to stay on course and survive.
Co-Showrunners/Executive Producers Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner said in a statement, "We couldn’t be more excited to get back into space with the crew of the Ark. Syfy continues to be an amazing partner and home for this series.

Ahead of the Season 1 finale, Syfy has renewed its hit original series The Ark for a second go-round. The renewal comes amid strong ratings for the series from Independence Day writer-producer Dean Devlin.

Syfy is remaining aboard The Ark.
The NBCUniversal cable outlet has renewed The Ark — set aboard a spaceship on a planetary colonization mission — for a second season. The pickup comes a week ahead of the show’s first season finale, set for April 19.
“We couldn’t be more excited to get back into space with the crew of the Ark,” executive producers and co-showrunners Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner said in a statement. “Syfy continues to be an amazing partner and home for this series.”
The Ark has been a solid performer for Syfy, with its series premiere in February topping 1 million viewers over three days — the network’s best showing for an original series since Resident Alien in January 2021. NBCU says 6.5 million people have watched at least a few minutes of the show across all platforms (it also streams on Peacock) over the course of the season.

If you want to attract a younger audience, you have to watch what they watch. Not what you think they are watching, says producer Dean Devlin, best known for “Independence Day” and “Stargate.” But he never designs his shows for one market.
“It’s no longer all about gender or age demographic. If you go to a sci-fi convention, they are not just kids, they are not just older people. It’s everybody!”
At Berlinale Series Market Selects, which runs as part of the European Film Market in Berlin, with his latest show, sci-fi series “The Ark,” Devlin continues to pay homage to the kind of stories he loved as a child, from Douglas Trumbull’s “Silent Running” to “The Omega Man.”

Two different types of viewers tuned in to check out The Ark on Syfy last week: those looking for a fun sci-fi adventure and those seeking a cutting edge space epic. While the pilot certainly met the needs of those expecting an enjoyable romp, others may have found any true depth lacking in the premiere, even though judging by a single episode might be considered unfair.
The Ark showrunners Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner admit they were going for familiarity over anything cutting edge. “There was a real desire to make a really comfortable old shoe but to put a new spin on it … bucking the trend lately of these incredibly dark and edgy shows that often are unique for unique’s sake, as opposed to storytelling’s sake,” says Devlin.
Glassner agrees that darker isn’t always better. “[The Ark is] kind of what I wanted to see on...

The Ark opened with impressive effects but a tired story.
The Ark Season 1 Episode 1 told a familiar story of a crew in stasis being woken early unintentionally.
Sadly, the show didn't add anything new to this overused plot device.
Going into the series, there was a sense of familiarity. Passengers waking up from their extended stasis before they're supposed to? A mission to find a new world? A random stowaway? If these tropes feel familiar, it's because they are.
Passengers (2016) is the *exact* plot, while many other forms of media use similar tropes/stories. So, does The Ark add anything to this trope? Not really.
The Ark has a few things going for it concerning the solid female lead and the respectable special effects. It's established early on that Christie Burke's as Lt. Sharon Garnet took control.
Burke gives her all to the role and elevates a lot of the disappointing dialogue,...

If you love shows set in the future, with high stakes and plenty of mysteries, chances are you’ll want to tune in to The Ark, premiering February 1 on Syfy, because series stars Christie Burke (Lt. Sharon Garnet), Richard Fleeshman (Lt. James Brice), and Reece Ritchie (Lt. Spencer Lane) promised all that and more when they sat down with TV Insider’s Damian Holbrook at the Television Critics Association 2023 Winter Press Tour. Space travel used to be romantic, both in real life and pop culture. These days, space travel is kind of a bummer. In the real world, rocketship rides are now most associated with billionaires, for whom such trips represent one small step for objectivism and one giant leap for their egos. Meanwhile, on television, NASA is getting spanked by Russia in the space race, and most shows are about voyagers who only venture beyond the atmosphere out of desperation. Whatever happened to genuine interstellar wanderlust?
If anyone was going to bring back Roddenberry-style space romps about quixotic adventurers for whom exploring the unexplored is its own reward, it would be Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner. Devlinco-wrote 1994’s “Stargate,” while Glassner helped adapt the film into the durable drama “Stargate: Sg-1.” Both are avowed Trekkies who have spent the bulk of their careers making deep space exploration look rewarding relative to its risk.

This article is spoiler-free for The Ark premiere.
Around the dawn of the new millennium, TV shows primarily set aboard spaceships were abundant if not universally watched. The era produced classics like Battlestar Galactica and the Stargate franchise, but it also found niche audiences for shows like Farscape and Andromeda. Even the most low-budget efforts have only become more revered with time, and audiences remember them fondly.
Thankfully, The Ark evokes that same sense of adventure, only with more modern sensibilities and special effects. That shouldn’t be too surprising given that the showrunners of the Syfy series are Dean Devlin, who co-wrote the original Stargate movie, and Jonathan Glassner, who co-created Stargate Sg-1, the successful televised spinoff that itself spawned several other series.

Initially, Syfy’s The Ark is a rough ride — and not only because the premiere episode opens with a catastrophic event that destroys much of the spaceship it’s set on, along with most of its passengers.
Its premise feels borrowed from countless other sci-fi tales. Its heroes seem to have been plucked half-formed from a factory of tired tropes. And its tone is off somehow, as if showrunners Dean Devlin (Leverage) and Jonathan Glassner (Stargate Sg-1) haven’t yet decided whether to lean into the grimness of its survival drama, or into the jarring uplift of its credits theme.
Yet just as the ship’s crew begin to rise to the occasion, so too do their series’ disparate elements. The Ark may never be admired for its thematic profundity, or its brave ideas, or its nuanced character development. But by the fourth hourlong episode sent to critics (of a...

The Ark looks like a throwback to the good old days of sci-fi series on Syfy.
The cable network released the first five minutes of the new drama, and we're convinced.
We pick up with a catastrophic event that awakens Lt. Sharon Garnet (Christie Burke) from her slumber.
Unfortunately, the event could lead to a loss of life, and Sharon is ready to go to any lengths necessary to save as many people as possible.
It's a high-stakes situation and one that requires a lot of attention.
There are tears as some of her colleagues lose loved ones, but Sharon has to think about the needs of the many as she battles to make the spaceship liveable, even for a short time.

"Everybody that was in charge of running this ship is dead… It all falls to us now." Syfy has revealed an official trailer for a sci-fi series debuting in February called The Ark, created for the sci-fi network. It's co-created by Jonathan Glassner, and Dean Devlin, best known as the writer of the screenplays for Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla, and Geostorm. Set 100 years in the future when Earth is sending out its first interplanetary colonization ships. The story follows the remaining crew of a spacecraft known as Ark One, who must become the best versions of themselves to stay on course & survive after a catastrophic event that causes massive destruction and loss of life on the ship. This sounds similar to other sci-fi with this premise like the two films Passengers and Aniara. It stars Christie Burke, Richard Fleeshman, Reece Ritchie, Stacey Read, and Ryan Adams. It has that very cheap Syfy look & feel,...

Of all the places to be lost, space is pretty high up on the list of undesirable locations. Becoming adrift in the near-infinite nothingness of the universe is a provocative concept, so much so that one of the most iconic sci-fi TV series ever just went ahead and named itself after it.
Becoming lost in space isn’t the only thing to fear among the stars, however. For instance: what if you know where you’re going but lack the adequate life-sustaining resources to get there? That is the question at the center of Syfy’s next original series, The Ark.
Premiering Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 10 p.m. Et on Syfy, The Ark brings a simple, yet horrifying situation to the table. Per the official Syfy synopsis: “The Ark takes place 100 years in the future when planetary colonization missions have begun as a necessity to help secure the survival of the human race.

Syfy’s targeting a February 2023 premiere for the new original sci-fi series The Ark from showrunners and executive producers Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner (Stargate Sg-1). The 15-second first teaser doesn’t reveal much about the plot, other than that there appears to be some sort of emergency in space.
Fortunately, Syfy’s synopsis of the series offers much better insight into what’s in store:
“Created by Dean Devlin, The Ark takes place 100 years in the future when planetary colonization missions have begun as a necessity to help secure the survival of the human race. The first of these missions on a spacecraft known as Ark One encounters a catastrophic event causing massive destruction and loss of life. With more than a year left to go before reaching their target planet, a lack of life-sustaining supplies, and loss of leadership, the remaining crew must become the best versions of...

The teaser and first look images, below, hint at a tense bid for survival amidst catastrophe. Dead bodies litter the hall and quick glances at terrified faces indicate the crew on this spacecraft is in for a rough time.
More importantly, it reveals that we can expect this sci-fi nightmare to arrive in February 2023.

Syfy’s SurrealEstate will again see the light of day. The Canadian drama series, which was canceled last year, will return for a second season for premiere in 2023, Syfy has revealed.
The series, which stars Tim Rozon, Sarah Levy, Adam Korson, Maurice Dean Wint, Savannah Basley, and Tennille Read, follows an elite team of specialists at The Roman Agency who handle the cases no one else can — haunted and possessed houses that literally scare would-be buyers away.
SurrealEstate will join previously announced new scripted series Reginald the Vampire, a dramedy based on Johnny B. Truant’s Fat Vampire book, and space-set survival drama The Ark, from writer Dean Devlin, as well as Halloween horror movie Bring It On: Cheer or Die.
Syfy’s latest programming slate includes the return of the #1 and #2 new scripted cable series of 2021, the Alan Tudyk-led dramedy Resident Alien and Chucky, executive produced by Don Mancini.
