He wrote gags for The Tonight Show, won an Oscar for Annie Hall – and had a near-miss with the Manson family. As his musical Jersey Boys returns, the writer looks back on 82 years of sex, drugs and jokes
“When you describe it like that,” says Marshall Brickman, “it sounds like I’ve never been able to stick with anything I like!” I had given Brickman a quick run-through of his career highs, from scoring hits with folk band the Tarriers in the 60s, moving into comedy to become head writer on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, then winning an Oscar as co-writer of Annie Hall in the 70s, followed by a Tony in 2006 for co-writing the musical Jersey Boys. “My life,” he says, “is no example of how to plan a creative life whatsoever. “I’ve had the joy of coming to Boston on countless occasions,” Diamond said in a statement, “but one of the most special was my 2013 trip to Fenway where I had the honor of being part of a moment of relief, unity, strength, and love. Next summer, when A Beautiful Noise has its first performance at the Emerson Colonial Theatre, and we’re all able to safely be in the same space together, experiencing the thrill of live theater, I imagine those same emotions will wash over me and the entire audience. Relief… Unity… Strength… Love… I can’t wait to share that experience.”

Nick Jonas In Talks To Play Frankie Valli In Streaming Version Of Tony-Winning ‘Jersey Boys’ Musical
Exclusive: Nick Jonas is in talks to play Frankie Valli in a streaming event performance of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Jersey Boys, sources said Monday. I’m hearing that the event will be produced by Bohemian Rhapsody‘s Graham King and the original Broadway producers the Dodgers, with Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio. It hasn’t been set up yet, but I’m hearing a landing place at a streamer is anticipated, as Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton became an event on Disney+ last year. The package is coming together quickly as a PG-13 undertaking.
Jonas will sing the song catalog that Valli and the Four Seasons built up in a show that traces his origins from Newark to the top of the charts in the ’60s. Jonas is part of the hitmaking Jonas Brothers, who’ve earned three consecutive No. 1 albums and have sold out shows throughout three continents.

Joe Pesci is a performer of all trades — just still don’t call him funny like clown.
While raking in praise and acclaim for his supporting role in Martin Scorsese‘s new crime drama The Irishman, the 76-year-old actor has now released a fully realized jazz album, featuring Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine on two tracks, no less.
Titled Pesci… Still Singing, the album, out now, includes 13 songs that totals just over an hour of Pesci’s musical take on classics like “I’ll Be Seeing You” and “‘Round Midnight.” Levine lends his vocals to “Baby Girl” and “My Cherie Amour,” a 1969 Motown hit by Stevie Wonder.

Here's why the rings of Saturn are constantly changing.
"Many dream of what they would do had they a time machine. Some would travel 100 million years back in time, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Not many, though, would think of taking a telescope with them, and if, having done so, observe Saturn and its rings."

Here's why the upcoming expansion for Magic: The Gathering looks epic.

A Neil Diamond bio-musical, with a score by the iconic singer-songwriter and a book by Bohemian Rhapsody writer Anthony McCarten, is heading to Broadway. Producers Ken Davenport and Bob Gaudio announced today that the as-yet-untitled project is in development.
Michael Mayer will direct.
Diamond – the man behind “Sweet Caroline,” “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” and “Song Sung Blue,” to name just a small few – said in a statement, “I’ve always loved Broadway. The inspiration for many of my early songs came from shows like West Side Story, My Fair Lady and Fiddler on the Roof, so it seems only fitting to bring my songs to The Great White Way. I’m honored and excited to be working with this great team.”

Brian Wilson’s life has been chronicled in countless books, movies and documentaries over the years, but nearly all of them focus either on his 1960s heyday as the creative force behind the Beach Boys or the difficult decades that followed in which he struggled with mental illness, obesity, drug addiction and the pernicious influence of therapist Dr. Eugene Landy. The time period that started 20 years ago when he began touring as a solo artist and creating brilliant new music has largely been ignored, but a new documentary by director...

The internet has come out in force this week with genius parodies of Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” We’ve already seen the Oscar frontrunner mashed-up with David Lynch and The Muppets, and now the Cinefix team has given it an 8-bit video game makeover. The parody is the latest entry in Cinefix’s “8-Bit Cinema” video series, and it manages to be both hilariously clever and rather depressing by the end.

StardustExile can take many forms. Several major filmmakers from Poland famously followed the Chopin route to France—Walerian Borowczyk, Andrzej Żuławski, to a degree even Krzysztof Kieślowski—while their pugilistic peer Jerzy Skolimowski, as well as Roman Polanski, was ranging even further across Europe and beyond. But the comically-oriented writer-director Andrzej Kondratiuk—an early Polanski co-conspirator, who died in June aged 79—found voluntary geographical exile without leaving his own country. He was able to renew his creative energies in rural isolation, seeking, gaining and retaining true independence amid a political system founded upon collective, communal effort. Kondratiuk’s five-decade career is thus a consistently idiosyncratic and enigmatic one, encompassing eight theatrical features, several shorts and five TV-movies. Among the latter is the work for which he’s now best known—at least at home—the raucous and irresistibly-titled black-and-white superhero/comicbook spoof Hydro-Riddle (Hydrozagadka, 1972), which after hostile initial reactions has...

Grr, argh. Sit, Ubu, sit. I made this! What’s the story behind the production company tags added onto our favourite TV shows?
Closing logos have evolved into a TV production company’s tiny stamp of individuality. They’re a single snippet of screen time not at the mercy of network notes, audience feedback or sponsorship concerns.
A closing tag doesn’t need to sell a show, tell a story, or lasso an audience back for the next episode. It’s simply a signature, a few seconds entirely belonging to the creatives, to do with what they will.
As such, closing logos are as self-indulgent or esoteric as the production company wills them. They’re perhaps the only place in television production where in-jokes, family photos, personal homages (or extended rants in the case of one comedy producer) and kid-drawn scribbles usually found taped to the fridge door are entirely welcome.

There are only a handful of movie producers that have ever come to be known by name in the general public, perhaps Jerry Bruckheimer, Avi Arad, Albert Broccoli or Saul Zaentz. One of those iconic producers is Jerry Weintraub, who produced a number of Hollywood features including the original The Karate Kid trilogy, the new Ocean's Eleven trilogy with an amazing ensemble cast, the comedy Oh, God!, the comedy Vegas Vacation, Soldier, the new Nancy Drew, Barry Levinson's Diner. Mr. Weintraub passed away from a heart attack on Monday, July 6th at the age of 77 at his home in Palm Springs, reported via Deadline. He was producing David Yates' Tarzan and was also an executive producer on HBO's new comedy The Brink. Early on in his entertainment management career in The Bronx, a young Jerry Weintraub decided to start his own company and worked with the likes of musicians Joey Bishop,...
