Mrs Brown’s Boys creator Brendan O’Carroll is headlining a new sitcom called Shedites, written by his co-star Paddy Houlihan.
Like it or not, Mrs Brown’s Boys has consistently been one of the top rated sitcoms on the BBC since its debut in 2011. Brendan O’Carroll’s foul mouthed Mammy has sharply divided audiences and critics, but there’s no denying the comedy appeals to a lot of people, selling out multiple arena tours and transferring to the big screen in 2011 with Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie.
It is perhaps surprising that it’s taken until now for O’Carroll to headline another sitcom for the BBC. He wrote an Army sitcom called Lebanese Outpost, which was in development at the BBC in 2021, but nothing has been produced.
According to the British Comedy Guide, Shedites comes from the pen of O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown’s Boys co-star and co-writer Paddy Houlihan. O’Carroll stars alongside Tommy Cannon,...

Germaine is in love with local buffoon Lee Bacon, while Aretha studies Carl Jung and Barack Obama. The pair are constantly at odds but look out for one another.

Based on the novel by Anthony McCarten (who also penned the film adaptation), Death of a Superhero follows Donald (played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster), a teen who is losing his battle with cancer, during the final weeks of his life. Donald is encouraged by his doctor (Andy Serkis) to find solace in art, and his drawings, which contain angry and graphic images of violence and death, help the audience to understand the inner workings of his mind. These are uncharted waters for director Ian Fitzgibbon, who decided to enlist the services of visual effects magician Alessandro Cioffi and Trixter, a German animation company, to make his vision come alive. They are able to create a rough and wild artistic style for Donald that would undoubtedly be the work of a teenager with a vibrant imagination and raw talent. While highly stylized drawings serve as the visual centerpieces of Death Of ...

Well, people, it’s here. Each year, starting around Memorial Day and continuing through the early weeks of summer, we find ourselves knee-deep in a period marked by the release of monstrously large popcorn flicks, movies that show off stars and special effects while raking in the dough. That’s right: it’s the season of the terminal illness drama-comedy. Oh, wait – just kidding. It’s Summer Blockbuster Season! And we’re off to a great start with Marvel’s superhero team up this weekend. Buckle up.
Let’s just get right to it. “The Avengers,” from writer-director Joss Whedon, unites almost every superhero under the Marvel banner in a fight against time and evil, in this weekend’s biggest movie (by far). Whedon, only several weeks out of receiving critical acclaim for his penning of “The Cabin in the Woods,” has created another masterpiece here. Death of a Superhero
Written by Anthony McCarten
Directed by Ian Fitzgibbon
Ireland/Germany, 2011
Why is it when we see the word “death” in a movie’s title, we still hold our collective breath, cross our fingers, and hope for a happy ending, knowing upfront the story will most likely deny us that possibility? There’s a temptation in this case to keep an emotional distance to ameliorate any inevitable heartbreak the title forecasts, and that reservation resembles in a way the same conflict experienced by the protagonist in Death of a Superhero.
Fifteen year-old Donald (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) has stopped living before he even dies. How can he find something to love about life when he knows his days are numbered, and that number is dismally low? So he starts to exhibit risky behavior, playing chicken with oncoming trains and tempting fate on the ledge of a highway overpass. Fearing...

In Irish director Ian Fitzgibbon's Death of a Superhero, teenager Donald's creativity, active imagination and innate talent combine to make him a highly talented comic book artist. His future would be bright were it not for one thing: Donald, 15, is dying of leukemia. With a cast that includes Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Donald, a non-mocap Andy Serkis as his unconventional psychologist and Michael McElhatton and Sharon Horganas his struggling-to-cope parents, Fitzgibbon has managed to direct a film about a teen with cancer that manages to be inspiring but not melodramatic, sad and poignant but not unrelentingly grim. With his film coming out on VOD tomorrow courtesy of Tribeca Films, Fitzgibbon took the time to chat with MovieMaker about what initially drew him to the script and how he crafted his own approach to the material.

In the New York Times, Stephen Holden notes that the new programming team (Frédéric Boyer, former artistic director of the Directors' Fortnight, Sundance vet Geoffrey Gilmore and Genna Terranova) have slimmed the lineup down to 90 features from 150 just two years ago: "As a result Tribeca is no longer a catchall basin for middling stray films seeking a showcase." What's more, "for the first time [the] world narrative and world documentary competitions have official opening-night films":

Ian FitzGibbon was an actor for ten years, training at Rada and appearing in "lots of English TV," including "Prime Suspect," before becoming bored and craving a challenge. So he began making short films and directed for TV, before making his first feature, 2008's "A Film With Me In It." And now, "Death of a Superhero"... What it's about: A teenage love story featuring a kid who pushes life to the max. FitzGibbon, on his challenges: "The rewrite I did with my friend Mark Doherty was pretty extensive. Originally the story was set in New Zealand. We transposed it to Dublin. The animation was very challenging and time consuming. But I loved every minute of it." What do you want Tribeca to get out of the film? "I hope they laugh and cry." What's next? "Some TV stuff. A Comedy Central series, a BBC series. I'm looking for a movie though!

A devil's bargain to ponder: more mo-cap-free, starring roles for Andy Serkis, but all of them in maudlin teen cancer dramas that make “50/50” seem like the underrated romp it isn't? Okay, okay, the recently released trailer for Ian Fitzgibbon-directed “Death of a Superhero” actually looks halfway interesting, but still it's a quandary to be considered.

Yesterday it was announced that Tribeca will simultaneously premiere some films on VOD as well as during their festival. One of those features is Death of a Superhero, from director Ian Fitzgibbon, who last helmed the fun crime comedy Perrier’s Bounty with Cillain Murphy and Jim Broadbent.
We reviewed his latest, which stars Andy Serkis and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, at Tiff and loved it, calling the drama a “touching story of heartbreak.” Movieline now has our first trailer below and shows a movie I personally can’t wait to check out. Many films dealing with death, especially of a child, can prove to be cloying and melodramatic, but this seems to insert a great whimsical touch. Check it out below.
Death of a Superhero will play at Tribeca 2012 and hit VOD on April 17th and limited theaters on May 4th.

As is customary of most festivals these days, we’ve been informed (via Deadline) that four Tribeca titles will see a spring VOD release through Tribeca Film. In this grouping, we can look forward to Death of a Superhero (which we loved at Tiff), The Giant Mechanical Man, Sleepless Night (my most anticipated of the lot), and Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story — all of which festival director Geoff Gilmore feels “embody the exceptional artistry and personal resonance that filmmaking at its finest can provide.” The lattermost of those will begin its VOD run on April 26th, while the other three can be expected on various platforms beginning April 17th.
You can read a synopsis of these four films below:
Booker’S Place: A Mississippi Story, directed by Raymond De Felitta. (USA) – World Premiere in Tff’s Spotlight section. In 1965, filmmaker Frank De Felitta made a documentary for NBC News...

2012 Tribeca Film Festival announced the World Narrative and Documentary Competition film selections
HollywoodNews.com: The 2012 Tribeca Film Festival (Tff), presented by American Express®, today announced the World Narrative and Documentary Competition film selections, along with selections for the out-of-competition Viewpoints section—the program established last year that highlights personal stories in international and independent cinema. Forty-six of the 90 feature-length films were announced. The 11th edition of the Festival will take place from April 18 to April 29 at locations around New York City.
The Festival was curated by a new programming team this year. Frédéric Boyer has joined Tff as Artistic Director, having most recently served as Artistic Director and Head of Programming for the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Geoffrey Gilmore, Chief Creative Officer of Tribeca Enterprises, has expanded his role in overseeing the Festival program. Genna Terranova has been promoted to Director of Programming and Cara Cusumano returns as Programmer.

The Tribeca Film Festival announced half of this year’s movie showcase, the 11th edition of the New York celebration set for April 18-29. James Franco’s behind-the-scenes General Hospital feature, Francophrenia, will have its North American premiere in the Viewpoints section – the program established last year that highlights more personal stories. “He’s kind of constructed this really interesting and well-crafted film about that experience that plays with the boundaries of documentary,” says Genna Terranova, Tribeca’s director of programming. “It’s a bit tongue in cheek, as James himself can be. He’s a bit enigmatic and the film is as well.

With The Five-Year Engagement set as the opening title for the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, they’ve announced more of the line-up today with World Narrative & Documentary Features as the Viewpoint titles. We’ve got the next film from The Exploding Girl director Bradley Rust Gray, Jack and Diane (as well as a first look about featuring Juno Temple, thanks to Styd).
There is a new Harmony Korine short as well Kate Bosworth‘s While We Were Here and The Girl, starring Abbie Cornish. James Franco also has his latest film, Francophrenia, featuring footage from his performance on General Hospital. Nothing sticks out too greatly yet, but if I see something as interesting as Beyond the Black Rainbow or Magic Valley like last year, I’ll be a happy man. Check it out below and come back Thursday for the rest of the announcement.

SXSW kicks off later this week, but once your done slurping the BBQ sauce off your fingers, pack your backs and head north to Manhattan as the Tribeca Film Festival is gearing up to unspool in April. To whet cinephile appetites, organizers have dropped the lineup for the World Narrative Feature Competition, World Documentary Feature Competition and Viewpoints lineups and there are plenty of titles to take note of.
Among the narratives, the anticipated "Jack And Diane" from Bradley Rust Gray will make its world premiere. Starring Juno Temple and Riley Keough, the film takes a teenage lesbian love tale and twists the formula, with one of them revealing she's a werewolf. Add to that a cast rounded out by Dane DeHaan, Jena Malone and pop star Kylie Minogue (as a tattooed lesbian, of course) and you can see why this will be one of the hottest tickets at the fest.
