Starring Martin Freeman, Flavia De Luce will begin production in the UK in October. More on the film below.
Martin Freeman, Jonathan Pryce and Toby Jones are all set to star in Bharat Nalluri’s Flavia De Luce. Based on a series of novels by Alan Bradley, the upcoming film will follow the titular 11-year-old amateur detective and master poisoner as she investigates a murder her father is accused of.
Kftv reports that the film is set to shoot in the Reading/Guildford area this October. The entire film will be shot on location, too, making it a nice change of pace from this summer’s CGI-heavy offerings.
Susan Coyne has adapted the first of 10 Flavia De Luce novels for the film and Protagonist Pictures took their film to Cannes earlier this year to introduce the film to buyers. We hope that went well.

The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival is underway. While this is one of the festivals where a lot of awards season contenders start getting buzz as we head into the fall and winter months, it's also a place where hidden horror gems can sneak up on you as we head into Halloween. Like many film festivals, TIFF has its own genre programming block called Midnight Madness where horror, thrillers, and the wilder side of filmmaking can be experienced. This year, a handful of titles have been getting some decent buzz, ranging from "Stranger Things" star Finn Wolfhard making his directorial debut with the slasher comedy "Hell of a Summer" to "Dream Scenario" putting Nicolas Cage into everyone's dreams and plenty in between.
Let's take a closer look at some of the horror titles drumming up noise at TIFF 2023.

Making a grand entrance into the world of directing, Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard present their feature debut, Hell of a Summer. With the vibes reminiscent of Friday the 13th and Sleep Away Camp, this film delivers nostalgia that captures the essence of the golden age of horror slasher cinema. Each character checks off the 1980s horror trope boxes, ensuring that every campy moment feels both authentic and delightfully over the top. Bryk and Wolfhard also star.
Starts with John and Cathy, owners of Pineway Summer Camp sitting around a campfire drinking beer and playing guitar. When one of them leaves to grab more alcohol, things end very badly for the two of them. Cut to Jason (Fred Hechinger) in the passenger seat while his mom drives him to work as a camp counselor at Pineway for $115 a week. “My plan was to die before the money ran out” has become the anthem and tagline of the Sony Pictures Classics’ French Exit starring Michelle Pfeiffer as a 60-year-old penniless Manhattan socialite – a role that has been earning her plenty of awards season buzz.
Opening in theaters today before expanding nationwide April 2, French Exit is directed by Azazel Jacobs and written by Patrick deWitt, who wrote the bestselling novel on which the movie is based. In it, Pfeiffer plays Frances Price whose life hasn’t gone exactly as planned after her dead husband’s (Tracy Letts) inheritance is gone. She cashes in the last of her possessions and decides to live out her twilight days anonymously in a borrowed apartment in Paris with her directionless son Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) and a cat named Small Frank — who may or may not embody the spirit of her husband.

Azazel Jacobs’ likably odd French Exit is headlined by the that magnetic chill of hers directly in mind. The movie — adapted by Patrick deWitt from his 2018 novel of the same name — is a tale about a classic, monied, New York City eccentric, the kind of person whose status is as obvious, in their utter aloofness to the world, as it is mysterious. Summing this up, somehow, with wonderfully caustic poise is Pfeiffer, who plays Frances Price: a widow on the verge — of going broke.

"Do you know what a 'cliche' is...? It's a story so fine... that it's grown old in its hopeful retelling." Sony Classics has debuted the first official trailer for French Exit, a devious dark comedy from filmmaker Azazel Jacobs that premiered as the Closing Night Film at this year's New York Film Festival. An aging Manhattan socialite living on what's barely left of her inheritance from her rich husband moves to her empty apartment in Paris with her son and cat. That's about it, there's not much more to the plot than that. Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Frances Price, with Lucas Hedges, Valerie Mahaffey, Imogen Poots, Susan Coyne, Danielle Macdonald, Isaach De Bankolé, Daniel di Tomasso, and Tracy Letts as the voice of her husband (as the cat). I was hoping this might be amusing, but it just looks awful - so pretentious and snobby. Who wants to watch someone...

Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance as the quick-witted Upper East Side socialite Frances Price in Azazel Jacobs’ French Exit (the world premiere was the Closing Night selection of the New York Film Festival), is picture-perfect. And so is that of Lucas Hedges (Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester By The Sea) as her son Malcolm. Based on the novel by Patrick deWitt, who also wrote the screenplay, this is the story of a strong-willed widow facing the fact that the endless flow of money she was used to is finally running out. Mother and son, plus a cat named Small Frank, who likely is the reincarnation of her husband (Tracy Letts voices him) embark to an apartment in Paris, lent to them by Frances’s old best friend Joan (Susan Coyne).

At a glance, Azazel Jacobs’ French Exit seems trivial, especially at a time when billionaires exist in droves, and the wealth divide continues to drastically widen. As the director’s second official collaboration with novelist and screenwriter Patrick deWitt, the closing film of the New York Film Festival cannot be confined to its logline: “A close-to-penniless widow moves to Paris with her son and cat, who also happens to be her reincarnated husband.” Opening with a written, serif font title card, the oddly upbeat, piano-heavy score whisks you into a world of lost riches, lost husbands, and lost relationships. Jacobs’ sixth feature is consumed with these oddities, contradictions, and absurd moments, consumed by the idea of a good, hearty laugh based on the melancholy of one’s circumstances.

New York Film Festival closing-night selection “French Exit” is that rare gem of 2020: a high-profile new movie that nobody has seen. Released by Sony Pictures Classics, it is a close collaboration between two old friends, author-turned-screenwriter Patrick DeWitt and director Azazel Jacobs (“The Lovers”). The director lured Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges to star in this comedy confection, adapted by DeWitt from his novel about a once-wealthy widow who leans on her handsome 20-something son for support. When she decamps to Paris with wads of cash after selling off all her worldly goods, it’s understood that her son will accompany her, leaving behind his one-time fiancee (Imogen Poots).
“What’s special about the film,” said NYFF head programmer Dennis Lim at Friday’s virtual press conference, “was its unusual, unpredictable tone. It’s surreal and dark and deadpan, and also heartfelt, as some changes happen moment to moment.

Sony Pictures Classics has scheduled Azazel Jacobs’ drama French Exit for a Feb. 21, 2021 release in time for Oscars.
The pic, which stars Oscar nominees Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges, is making its world premiere as the Closing Night feature at the 2020 New York Film Festival.
Directed by Jacobs and written by award-winning novelist Patrick deWitt, based on the author’s international bestseller, French Exit follows an aging Manhattan socialite living on what’s barely left of her inheritance, who moves to a small apartment in Paris with her directionless son and cat, Small Frank. The feline may or may not embody the spirit of Frances’ dead husband (played by Tony Award winner Trace Letts).
Danielle Macdonald, Valerie Mahaffey, Daniel di Tomasso, Susan Coyne, Imogen Poots, and Isaach de Bankolé also star. French Exit, the novel, was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize.

As Les Standiford’s book would tell it, Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) found himself in somewhat of a creative rut after a lengthy and expensive tour of America post-Oliver Twist. He had published three flops since buying a new London home in need of wholesale remodeling and began watching his pocketbook dwindle along with his confidence. It was as though the autumn of 1843 presented him a make or break moment wherein he wasn’t certain he would ever write again. And then inspiration struck with the voice of a new maid (Anna Murphy’s Tara) telling the children Irish ghost stories before bed. This idea of Christmas Eve providing a doorway of sorts to the spiritual world planted itself in Dickens’ mind. Soon after Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer) was born.

Chicago – The story of Ebenezer Scrooge, as told in Charles Dicken’s classic “A Christmas Carol,” seems to be the one constant that survives the commercialization of the holiday season. The story of Scrooge’s creation is told with expressive sentimentality in “The Man Who Invented Christmas.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Dan Stevens portrays the title character, that of Charles Dickens himself, and the film – directed by Bharat Nalluri (“Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”), and adapted from a book by Les Standiford – is a scattered narrative between Dicken’s chaotic life in mid-19th Century Britain and his creative spirit in producing “A Christmas Carol.” Literature buffs will get a thrill as the characters spring to life as Dickens invents them, and they follow him around for the rest of the process, almost begging to be freed. Less interesting are the particulars of Dicken’s life, with domestic and familial duties that...

MaryAnn’s quick take… There’s charm and wit in its fanciful depiction of the creative process, but the film downplays the social activism that Dickens fully embraced in his work. I’m “biast” (pro): love Dickens and A Christmas Carol
I’m “biast” (con): haven’t been the biggest fan of Dan Stevens
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Did Charles Dickens really invent our modern observance of Christmas? Well… he certainly contributed to it, with his beloved 1843 novella A Christmas Carol bringing to it a spirit of family celebration and togetherness and moving the holiday away from its religious grounding to a more secular one focused on ecumenical kindness and generosity. But we also have Prince Albert to thank, for importing his German Yuletide customs — such as evergreens and Christmas trees — to England when he married...

One of the few benefits of the frenzied awards race is Hollywood’s outpouring of materials associated with the contenders. Perhaps the biggest perk is the release of full scripts one is able to download legally, directly from the studios.
Currently available are The Big Sick, I, Tonya, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), The Lost City of Z, Mudbound, mother!, Okja, and more. Check back for some of our favorites and/or highly-anticipated scripts, such as Phantom Thread, Call Me by Your Name, A Ghost Story, Lady Bird, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Get Out, The Post, The Florida Project, and more.

It’s only been a few short weeks since Winnie the Pooh got the “Shakespeare in Love” treatment in “Goodbye Christopher Robin” — a film that inspired this critic to lament that “we used to tell stories; now we just tell stories about how we used to tell stories” — which means that we’re already long overdue for another saccharine period fable about the creation of another literary icon. Enter Ebenezer Scrooge, who came to Charles Dickens at a moment when both men were at a low point in their lives.
The year was 1843, the great author (a manic Dan Stevens) was 31, and his massive fame was ebbing in the wake of three consecutive flops. With the winter settling in and a certain lifestyle to maintain, Dickens was in desperate need of a Christmas miracle. There was only one problem: There hadn’t been a Christmas miracle in almost 1,843 years. You see,...

Screen International Star Of Tomorrow Morfydd Clark has joined The Man Who Invented Christmas.
The project, based on Les Standiford’s book, imagines how Charles Dickens created his iconic story A Christmas Carol and stars Dan Stevens as the author.
Clark will play his wife and joins Christopher Plummer (as Scrooge) and Jonathan Pryce (as Dickens’ father) in the cast.
Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day) directs from a script by Susan Coyne (Mozart In The Jungle).
The story begins in October 1843 when Charles Dickens was broke. Despite early success, his last three books had failed. Rejected by his publishers, he sets out to write and self-publish a book which he hopes will keep his family afloat. After six fever-pitched weeks, he created A Christmas Carol.

After Sacha Baron Cohen attempted to get it made for many years, it looks like a Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is finally moving forward with a different star. While Ben Whishaw also circled it briefly, the role of the late Queen frontman is now attached to the Emmy-winning Mr. Robot star Rami Malek. According to Deadline, Bryan Singer is attached to direct the film, which is now being scripted by The Theory of Everything writer Anthony McCarten. With a shoot eyed to begin early next year, as much we’d like to see the director step away from X-Men territory, hopefully this one doesn’t turn out to be as by-the-numbers as McCarten’s previous work.

A Christmas Carol, the time-honoured story from Charles Dickens, needs no introduction. First published in the mid 1800s, the supernatural Dickens parable is still very much a cornerstone of the festive season, and many can recite Ebenezer Scrooge’s encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come from memory. But what of the story behind the classic?
Coming off a string of literary duds, Charles Dickens was struggling to make ends meet before fleshing out A Christmas Carol in the space of six weeks, a comeback story that serves as the spine for Les Stanford’s 2008 non-fiction novel, The Man Who Invented Christmas.
It’s now being packaged for the silver screen, according to Deadline, who reveal that Dan Stevens has landed the star role of the young Charles Dickens, headlining a cast comprised of Christopher Plummer and Game of Thrones star Jonathan Pryce. They’ll play Scrooge and Dickens Sr.
