Chain of Events 1958 Region 2 DVD Review: Directed by Gerald Thomas, Starring Kenneth Griffith, Susan Shaw, Dermot Walsh, Freddie Mills and Joan Hickson. Released November 2nd 2015
A taut 1958 crime melodrama, Chain of Events features noted actor and film-maker Kenneth Griffith as a bank clerk whose attempt to dodge a fare has devastating consequences; a powerful cast includes Rank "Charm School" starlet Susan Shaw and future Richard the Lionheart lead Dermot Walsh. Chain of Events is also directed in sharp, pacey style by the ‘Carry On’ legend Gerald Thomas.
Rather curiously, Chain of Events was adapted from a radio play written by the late Australian character actor Leo McKern. John Clarke (Kenneth Griffith), an uninspiring sort of gentleman, one day boards a bus on his way home from work and foolishly “forgets” to pay his fare. He is caught by an inspector, but instead of owning up to it,...

Wendy Hughes and Norman Kaye star as the odd but appealing couple in Paul Cox’s early career-defining and AFI-award-winning film
The latest film from veteran Dutch-born writer/director Paul Cox, Force of Destiny, stars David Wenham as a lovesick artist who finds soul-revitalising romance late in life, after being diagnosed with liver cancer. Known for his naturalistic, character-oriented and occasionally improvisational style, Cox explored similar themes – albeit in softer and more humorous ways – in an early career-defining work: 1981’s deeply memorable romantic drama Lonely Hearts.
Co-written by Cox and comedian John Clarke and produced by Phillip Adams, the film is about two social misfits who connect via a dating service. Peter (Norman Kaye) is an oddball fellow, a piano tuner pushing 50 who has never married and walks around in a slight daze, belying a sometimes scheming personality. He wears a new Hong Kong-imported rug on his head, a flamboyant...

Though it has been covered well in documentaries and books, there hasn’t been a film that specifically targeted the musical movement of Northern Soul that swept the north of England in the 1970s. Elaine Constantine’s film aims to change that, and the trailer is now online.Northern Soul follows John Clarke (Elliot James Langridge) and his friends, who dream of cornering the market for this exploding musical style in their small town. Rejecting a future slogging on the production line, the friends dream of going to America in search of the ultra-rare records that will help them to become the premier DJs on the Northern Soul scene. But it won’t be as easy as that, with parents and teachers against them and the police none too happy about the wilder fringes of the movement. Northern Soul also features Steve Coogan, Lisa Stansfield, Ricky Tomlinson, John Thomas, Antonia Thomas,...

The turning point for him in cinema was the formation of the independent company Beaver Films with his friend Richard Attenborough in 1958. The results of the first ever Encore Score, an on air talent ranking designed for marketers and TV networks, were announced at the Mumbrella360 conference this morning.
By far the most popular Australian personality is Hugh Jackman with an Encore Score of 426 while Kyle Sandilands was the least popular with a score of -299.
The survey quizzed 2965 members of the public about 738 personalities. Survey respondents were asked which celebrities they recognised and how much they liked or hated each personality.
The intention of the Encore Score is to provide an indicator to brands and programmers about which personalities are most bankable with audiences.
Each respondent saw 100 names and images. Each celebrity was seen by an average of 360 respondents. A formula was then applied to the results that took into account how many people ‘liked’ them, ‘hated’ them and ‘recognised’ them, resulting in the Encore Score ((%favourite – %hate x level of...

About three weeks ago, I wrote an article announcing Shadowlocked's involvement in this year's Telluride Horror Show and my role as 'Master Host'. Some of you have been wondering what films will be on tap for those in attendance, and lemme tell ya, there are some real doozies. Whether their horror tastes lie with the moody and atmospheric or with over the top fountains of gore, fright fans will find that the Horror Show has something for everyone this year.
Back by popular demand is the extremely popular horror/comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, one of last year's Horror Show crown jewels returning for a repeat performance. Also on tap is The Tunnel, an Australian horror in the 'found footage' genre. Director Carlo Ledesma and producers Enzo Tedeschi and Julian Harvey will be in attendance. Making their United States debuts are shoot-o-rama The Scarlet Worm and tournament-style gorefest Monster Brawl.

When it comes to selecting which movies you are going to put in your film festival, some organizers are better than others. Judging by the announcement of first wave of films to be screened at the Second Annual Telluride Film Festival in Telluride, Colorado, these guys know their shit!
With a schedule that will boast over 20 features and 20 shorts, this is just the beginning, but I'm impressed already…Chillerama, Helldriver, a killer baseball pitcher film And Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Yeah, I'm impressed.
And not only are you getting a killer film line-up, Telluride itself is amazing! A former silver mining town set in a box canyon in southwest Colorado, it's the perfect Shining-esque, Overlook Hotel setting for a horror film festival. To-Hell-You-Ride, Colorado. Oh yeah!
I know it's a full schedule when the ol' carpel tunnel syndrome starts acting up while I write and format the film list.

The BBC has denied allegations of plagiarism relating to its comedy Twenty Twelve. The series, which began on Monday, stars Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes as members of the organising team preparing for the Olympic Games. Australian writers John Clarke and Ross Stevenson have now told the Sydney Morning Herald that they believe the show is based on their series The Games, which ran in 1998 and 2000. The pair also pitched the format to the BBC with the help of Kath And Kim producer Rick McKenna. Clarke and Stevenson alleged that Twenty Twelve writer John Morton had been given DVDs of their series and suggested that the claims of plagiarism are "very sound". "We haven't seen Twenty Twelve so it would be unreasonable of us to make an accusation of copying, but it's pretty clear where they got the format," Clarke said. "It (more)...

Bob Ellis looks back at this year’s Sydney Film Festival.
We are forbidden urination after a three-hour film and herded bursting out into the rain and pushed in front of speeding traffic by big Tongan guardians of the Red Carpet while inside, in the ever-gorgeous art-deco foyer, barmen and pie vendors gazed on its lovely emptiness planning their bankruptcies and other careers and cursing, like all of us, the Clare Stewart Effect on world cinema.
Audiences entering successive sessions without hellish incident these last 113 years have not educated this woman; clamour, ticketless offices, caffeine deprivation, pissed trousers and lack of a chance to chat between sessions (or even sit on the marble steps) have characterised her Cromwellian rule for years now and several deaths, I calculate, from the pelting rain and it is wrong for her to preen her ghastly dress sense in golden spotlight just because certain films...

A rap about the H1N1 virus has reached the final of a competition for the best swine flu public service announcement from the Us Department of Health and Human Services. The track by John Clarke is the latest "health hop" song by the doctor, who has previously penned rhymes about asthma, teen pregnancy and diabetes, the New York Daily News reports. Clarke said: "When I found out, I was like wow. This is really cool, that the Us government is actually endorsing a hip-hop video! "I try to just find a clever way to present the topic to make it interesting. The beauty of rap is (more)...

Love it or hate it, the Ufc knows what they're doing. With professional boxing fractured and star-less, the Ufc has stepped in as the de facto leader in dudes-pummeling-dudes entertainment. A big reason for this is Ufc President Dana White, who has masterfully shepherded the sport of Mma into the big time. The Ufc is packaged so precisely that it's hard not to be entertained by the product. One large feather in the cap of Dana White and company is The Ultimate Fighter, the SpikeTV Ufc reality show which features established Mma stars coaching up-and-comers in a season long tournament. The seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter debuts Wednesday, April 2 on SpikeTV and features a brand new format.
This season will feature middleweight fighters (171-185 lbs.), though the coaches are both light heavyweights. Current light heavyweight belt holder Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will coach one team, with contender Forrest Griffin coaching the other.
