You have to begin by asking yourself, do we really want an origin story for Peter Pan? J.M. Barrie certainly didn’t seem to think we needed it when he first wrote the play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up in December 1904. The book we’re more familiar with, Peter and Wendy, didn’t arrive until 1911.
However, we have been conditioned to expect to understand everything there is about a character and too often we’re given origin stories that dilute the action. So, one has to wonder why Warner Bros and director Joe Wright felt we needed Pan.
The overwrought, over-produced production got bumped from summer to fall only to flop big time and is out now on Combo Pack from Warner Home Entertainment.
The idea of the boy who never grew up, who had wild escapades in Neverland should be sufficient lure for audiences.

This big-budget prequel to the Peter Pan story adds little to the legacy of Jm Barrie’s classic
Like so many revisionist Peter Pan spin-offs, from Spielberg’s dismal Hook to Fernando Trueba’s unfairly maligned The Mad Monkey, Joe Wright’s multimillion-dollar prequel has already proved an unloved progeny, abandoned at the Us box office amid gloating “Pan gets panned” headlines. It’s actually not that bad, although crucially, it’s not that good either. With its piratical blend of Happy Feet-style reconfigured pop hits (Smells Like Teen Spirit, Blitzkrieg Bop), creaky funfair sets and weightlessly ropey wire-work, Pan is hardly timeless fare. Hugh Jackman plays Blackbeard, who steals away children to Neverland, like the bastard son of Johnny Depp and Dick Emery – all teeth, hair and gurning theatricality. He’s fun, but no match for Kathy Burke’s Mother Barnabas, or Adeel Akhtar’s consistently scene-stealing Sam Smiegel.

Everyone knows the story of Peter Pan, but how exactly did the boy who refused to become a man end up in Neverland in the first place? Pan, in theaters today, answers that very question. In the Warner Bros. Pictures movie (rated PG), director Joe Wright introduces audiences to 12-year-old orphan Peter (Levi Miller), who is determined to find his mother Mary (Amanda Seyfried) in the mysterious land. He befriends James Hook (Garrett Hedlund) and Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara), and together, they must save Neverland from the ruthless pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman). Along the way, Peter must fulfill his destiny to become the hero forever known as Peter Pan. Pan also stars Adeel Akhtar as Mr. Smee, Jack Charles as Chief Great...

Warner Bros. has released 4 new posters for their upcoming adventure film, Pan, spotlighting the main characters from the movie. There’s Hugh Jackman (X-Men: Days Of Future Past) as the villainous pirate Blackbeard, Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) as Tiger Lilly, Levi Miller as “the boy who wouldn’t grow up” himself, and Garret Hedlund (Tron Legacy) as James Hook – which is an appropriate name for a guy who will eventually lose a hand and have it replaced with… a hook.
Director Joe Wright (Hanna, Pride And Prejudice, Atonement) has promised fans a very different Peter Pan story, and from what we know thanks to the plot summary below, it definitely seems to be a fresh take on the early days of these characters.

Warner Bros. decided to delay their upcoming Peter Pan feature, Pan, from a July release to Oct. 9, hoping to catch a wider audience later in the year rather than compete with the large amount of summer releases. Not a bad move in my estimation as it seems you either need a big franchise name like Mission: Impossible, a superhero movie or a hard bit of counter-programming, a la Pitch Perfect 2, to really survive the summer movie season nowadays. At least if we're talking a movie with some dollars behind it and word is Pan cost the studio $150 million. Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement), Pan is a wholly original adventure about the beginnings of the J.M. Barrie character with Levi Miller taking on the title role as a mischievous 12-year-old boy who, one night, is whisked away from the orphanage where he lives and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates,...

Giving both the film and the filmmakers some extra breathing room, Warner Bros. Pictures’ action adventure Pan has been moved from its previous July 24th opening to fall and will begin its global launch with the new domestic release date of October 9, 2015.
The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
In making the announcement, Fellman said, “We wanted to give ‘Pan’ the space to extend its theatrical run, so taking it out of the cluttered summer season made the most sense. Moving the film to the heart of the fall will allow us more time to screen the picture, enabling us to capitalize on what we anticipate will be strong word of mouth.”

Hugh Jackman has released short teaser for Joe Wright’s upcoming film Pan, in which the actor plays the legendary pirate Blackbeard. The sneak peak basically welcomes you to Neverland. This movie looks like it has potential to be a great adaptation of J.M. Barrie‘s classic story Peter Pan. I like everything that I've seen so far, and that first trailer really grabbed me. This teaser is just the start of bigger things to come, so stay tuned.
Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, the action adventure follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny—to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.

Director Joe Wright's Peter Pan inspired film, Pan, looks absolutely incredible. We've got the first full trailer to share with you today, and it's really quite magical. This could possibly be the best live-action adaptation of Peter Pan yet. The trailer shows off some very vibrant visuals and impressive looking set-pieces. I have to say, Hugh Jackman looks kind of terrifying as Blackbeard. I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie, but after having watched this trailer I'm expecting great things!
Yeah, it's an origin story, but it's an origin story that looks damn good!

What is it with bald Blackbeards these days? First, we got John Malkovich’s shiny dome on the terrible NBC series Crossbones, and now Oscar nominee Hugh Jackman is shaving his head to play the notorious pirate for Joe Wright’s Peter Pan origin tale Pan.
In all seriousness, Jackman will almost certainly be wearing a wig to play Blackbeard, but it’s still weird to see the X-Men actor without his iconic Wolverine mutton chops. Check out the Instagram image, captioned with “Blackbeard is born. #Pan,” below:
Jackman is just one of multiple talented actors in Wright’s Pan, which Warner Bros. is positioning as a 2015 summer tentpole. Billed as a darker take on the Peter Pan story, Pan also stars Garrett Hedlund as Hook and Rooney Mara as Tiger Lilly. (Cbr) The last major piece of the casting puzzle has fallen into place for Warner Bros.’ "Pan," the Peter Pan origin story directed by Joe Wright. Deadline reports Amanda Seyfried has signed on to star in the film, which tells the story of Peter Pan’s earliest encounters with Captain Hook, before the two became deadly adversaries. No word yet on anyone's roles, but they join Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara, Adeel Akhtar and Levi Miller for the movie that starts shooting next week. Warner Bros. announced the start of production on Joe Wright's Pan, a film said to be an origin story and darker take on J.M. The casting of Mara as Tiger Lilly gained a certain amount of scrutiny, but it would appear the rest of Wright's cast has been filled in with a rather eclectic group of actors, including Australian Aboriginal actor Jack Charles (pictured) playing Tiger Lily's father known as The Chief. Other members include Amanda Seyfried (Les Miserables) as Mary; Taejoo Na (The Kick) as Kwahu; Kurt Egyiawan (Skyfall) as Murray; Lewis MacDougall...

This collection of Indigenous ghost stories from Warwick Thornton is intriguing but less than the sum of its parts
Warwick Thornton's The Darkside was developed from a national callout for Indigenous ghost stories. Submitted by black and white Australians, Thornton narrowed down the more than 150 stories into 13 to make this film. The filmmakers recorded these stories, told firsthand, and the documentary combines three of these original audio recordings with monologues performed by 10 of Australia's leading performers.
The stories Thornton relays are varied: there is a woman who was attacked by a ghost in her bed; a white woman who, when meditating, saw a rainbow serpent and Aboriginal elders; a man who met a spirit through a firefly. There are people who see strangers, and those who see family members; stories of fear, stories of curiosity, and stories of protection.

Ivan Sen's unflinching, insightful film about Aboriginal life in rural Australia features a revelatory central peformance from Aaron Pedersen
Aboriginal detective Joe Swan, returned to his small town after a stint in the city, finds himself investigating the murder of a teenaged Aboriginal girl in this crime thriller by ambitious, independent filmmaker Ivan Sen. As the town's secrets are unravelled, a sometimes awkward plot is eclipsed by Sen's cinematic craft, stellar performances and insights about the intricacies of race relations in rural Australia. This subject matter can be often piously handled but thanks to Sen's deft touch, here the more difficult political messages do not patronise the audience.
Swan's personal choices, which have left him estranged from his daughter and created a complex, bitter relationship with her mother, are also symptomatic of his relationship with the broader Aboriginal community. He has returned to a town in which he is now a complete outsider.

Dunne docu among MIFF fund projects
SYDNEY -- An Australian-produced documentary about Vanity Fair writer Dominick Dunne set against the Phil Spector trial is one of five features to receive funding from the Melbourne International Film Festival's new AUS$1.4 million ($1.28 million) Premiere Film Fund, organizers said.
"Celebrity -- Tales of Dominick Dunne," looks at the American justice system and the cult of celebrity through the eyes of Dunne and the films Australian writer-directors Tim Jolley and Kirsty de Gris and producers Sue Maslin and Daryl Delora.
