We take a look at the off-screen actors who helped define their corner of the genre.
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
So much visual design goes into good sci-fi that it’s sometimes easy to overlook the sounds. World-building doesn't happen in silence though, and the voice actors who record their lines off-set and out of costume have helped shaped the genre into what it is – providing chilling, mellifluous, gravelly, or downright otherworldly vocal performances to some of the most iconic characters in film and TV.
These, then, are the most memorable voices in sci-fi – the growling, lisping, singing, monologuing heroes and villains who made pop-culture history from a lonely sound booth.
Douglas Rain as Hal (2001: A Space Odyssey)

Let’s all hope Hollywood has got this one wrong…
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Back in the old days, paintings, carvings and engravings of Hell were used to shock sinners into mending their ways – promising them an eternity of pain and suffering, usually at the end of a red hot poker. Most world religions have their own ideas about what Hell looks like, but filmmakers have since thrown in a lot of their own ideas too – with movie villains heading everywhere from fiery torture caves and spikey chasms to bottomless voids and empty prison cells.
Personally, we’re hoping for the one in The Good Place (because at least Ted Danson will be there), but almost anything is better than spending any time in any of the Hells on this list…

This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Ever since J.J. Abrams reignited the Skywalker saga in 2015 with The Force Awakens, the Star Wars universe has been in a constant state of flux. Initial plans for a dozen different movies have since been changed for a slightly less explosive approach to world (re)building, with spin-off movies swapped for TV shows and future trilogy news going quiet.
All eyes are currently on what the future holds for Star Wars after Episode IX, but we’ve still got a few months to wait before that film even comes out. Set to tie-up more than 40 year’s worth of plot lines, Abrams’ third trilogy closer will...

The Saint might be headed back to the big screen, with Chris Pratt in the lead role.
Chris Pratt is in early negotiations with Paramount Pictures to take the lead in a new movie reboot of The Saint. According to Deadline, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is aiming to bring Simon Templar back, with Pratt the current frontrunner for the role.
Created by Leslie Charteris in a series of books in the 1920s, Templar is a super-suave, ultra-charming vigilante – sort of like an unofficial James Bond without an official licence to kill. The books were first adapted into a radio series and a string of films in the 1940s, but the character became most well known in the 1960s thanks to Roger Moore’s starring role in the long-running British TV series.
Then came the 1997 Val Kilmer movie… While it wasn’t actually that bad, the film changed...

Rupert Wyatt gives us both sides of an alien invasion in Captive State.
Captive State is an alien invasion movie that carries elements from films like The Purge, Cloverfield, Children of Men, V for Vendetta, colliding with an array of other sci-fi.
Rupert Wyatt returns to sci-fi with the film after he followed up 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes with 2014 crime movie The Gambler. Indeed, Captive State is set 10 years after a successful alien invasion in a world controlled by propaganda. Crime and poverty have been wiped out (apparently) and – per said propaganda – there’s absolutely no reason to fear the giant space rock that hovers above the city.

Lucasfilm hasn't yet announced what's next for Star Wars after Episode IX. We make our best guess at what will follow the Sequel Trilogy...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
If you pay $4 billion for something, you expect to get your money’s worth. When Disney bought Lucasfilm back in 2012, everyone expected the House of Mouse to milk Star Wars for everything it could. Sure enough, multiple new trilogies, TV shows, theme park worlds, games, and cross-over partnerships were quickly announced, and Star Wars production went into overdrive.
Then Solo: A Star Wars Story happened. The Last Jedi split opinion among die-hard fans, but it still made an insane amount of money (currently sitting as the 11th highest-grossing film of all time), but Solo did the unthinkable: bombing at the box-office for the first time since never in the Star Wars franchise.

Once Upon A Deadpool will riff on The Princess Bride and yes, Fred Savage will be there.
Deadpool 2’s new family friendly cut will now be called Once Upon A Deadpool. What’s more, part of the proceeds will go to charity – and that the new framing device will be a nod to The Princess Bride.
Seeing as how Ryan Reynolds spent years trying to make an R-rated superhero movie, the news that he’s prepared to do a big re-edit of Deadpool 2 for children seems a bit odd.
“Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006,” said Reynolds. “I’ve said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said ‘Yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining…”

Will Smith and Tom Holland have lent their voices to animated movie Spies in Disguise.
Spies in Disguise is bringing something new to the (admittedly esoteric) genre of animated spy comedy movies. After all, while we’ve seen plenty of mismatched buddy spy comedy movies, we haven’t seen a mismatched buddy spy comedy movie about a secret agent who gets turned into a pigeon.
The movie centers on the story of super-suave super-spy Lance Sterling, voiced by megastar Will Smith, and what happens when he bumps into goofy scientist Walter Becket, voiced by current Spider-Man star Tom Holland. Studio Blue Sky Studios, the folk who made Ice Age, Robots, The Peanuts Movie and Ferdinand, has produced the film, which will be distributed by 20th Century Fox.

Guy Ritchie’s posh drug lord crime caper, Toff Guys, is corralling an impressive cast.
Guy Ritchie is heading back to his roots with Toff Guys, a British crime caper that he’s squeezing into production before he’s even finished post-production work on his live-action Aladdin.
Matthew McConaughey and Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) were early additions to the cast, eventually joined by Hugh Grant. However, the film has also seen a casting swap, since originally-announced co-star Kate Beckinsale would be replaced by Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey).
Colin Farrell is set as the newest addition to the Toff Guys cast, reports THR. While the film's character details are still vague, it was revealed that Farrell will play "Coach," a trainer of Mma fighters. If Tom Hardy was right about those 40 missing minutes, which scenes didn't make the cut?
A few weeks ago, Tom Hardy caused a bit of a stir by trying to promote Venom by telling everyone that all of his favorite scenes had been cut out.
Talking to ComicsExplained, Hardy said “there are 30 to 40 minutes' worth of scenes that aren't in this movie... Mad puppeteering scenes, dark comedy scenes”. Hardy later had to backtrack a bit when IGN picked him up on it at the premiere, starting off by saying that he’d been misunderstood but going on to make things a whole lot worse.
“What I'm saying is that I had a lot of time improvising and a lot of freedom to play Venom. In honesty, there's probably about seven hours or more worth of footage of me playing as Venom and enjoying myself.”

The legendary 2000Ad artist has passed away.
Carlos Ezquerra, the Spanish artist who co-created Judge Dredd for 2000Ad, has died at the age of 70.
The sad news was confirmed on the 2000Ad website, who posted a photo of Ezquerra at his drawing desk.
“One of the all-time greatest comic book artists, the Spanish illustrator was one of the titans of 2000Ad,” read the tribute.
“Modest and unassuming, Carlos was nonetheless a legend whose contribution to the global comic book industry cannot be understated. His distinctive style - characterised by breathtakingly dynamic, high-energy storytelling and the distinctive ridged thick inking that outlined so many key moments - was instantly recognizable.
“Despite a brush with lung cancer in 2010, he continued to work and, although the cancer returned this year it was believed he was recovering well. His sudden death is a profound loss not just to 2000Ad but to the comic book medium.

Ralph Fiennes eyes the lead role in Matthew Vaughn’s third Kingsman movie
It was a bit of a surprise when Kingsman 3 was suddenly announced for next year – filling the slot that Bond 25 left after all that Danny Boyle business. Director and writer Matthew Vaughn will have to get a move on if it wants to make the film’s November 8, 2019, release date, and we’re now hearing our first big rumors about the plot and cast.
According to The Daily Mail, Kingsman 3 will be a prequel – set during World War One to tell the origin story of the Kingsman. Mixing up comic book lore with real history, the film will blur elements from the (real) Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, which has had a rank known as “Kingsman” for more than a century.

Kenneth Branagh’s next Poirot movie gets its first suspect as Gal Gadot joins the Death on the Nile cast.

Watch the first trailer for Dexter Fletcher's Elton John biopic starring Taron Egerton.
Dexter Fletcher’s fantasy Elton John biopic has given us its first glimpse of Taron Egerton in action – with a teaser that brings us singing, dancing, and a disco full of flying people.
We already know that Rocketman is going to be a less than conventional biopic – with Egerton telling us the film will be a “musical fantasy” that uses John’s songs to “express important beats in his life at emotional moments” – and the teaser already looks like it has plenty of amazing musical set-pieces built around John’s hits.
We also know that the film won’t be holding back on showing the singer’s dark side either. John is producing the film, alongside husband David Furnish, and Kingsman’s Matthew Vaughn, but reportedly told Fletcher to show him, warts and all.

The Rocketman star looks pretty uncanny in costume as Elton John.
The first picture of Taron Egerton in Rocketman has been released, and he already looks pretty perfect for the role. Hidden behind a scruffy wig, giant sparkly glasses and some seriously cool sneakers, Egerton’s take on Elton John looks like everything it needs to be.
Rocketman is pitched as a “musical fantasy” rather than a straight biopic, with Egerton telling The Telegraph that John’s songs are “used to express important beats in his life at emotional moments,” adding that “He’s not the only character that sings.”
Directed by Dexter Fletcher – who already has form with Egerton after Eddie The Eagle, form with musicals after Sunshine On Leith, and form with long-gestating, possibly problematic biopics after replacing Bryan Singer on Bohemian Rhapsody – Rocketman is being produced by Elton John himself.

Tim Allen says "I couldn't even get through the last scene" of Toy Story 4.
The first Toy Story made us cry when Woody and Buzz became best friends at the end. The second one made us cry during Jessie’s song. The third one… don’t even get us started.
According to Tim Allen, the upcoming Toy Story 4 is going to be another emotional ride, with some of the last scenes being “hard to get through."
Appearing on the American chat show, The Talk, Allen weirdly started off by comparing the film to Avengers: Infinity War.
“If you’re at all a superhero fan, because I am, Infinity War didn’t seem like it was going to work but it was a lot of vignettes that all made sense…”
Does this mean the structure of Toy Story 4 is going to follow each character separately?...

With Jovovich taking the lead as a woman named “Artemis”, Harris is playing a sniper named Link and Perlman is “Admiral”, the leader of the group.
Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise is already huge (especially in Japan) and Anderson has a pretty long extensive record other game adaptations already – even if this one is being made for a very ambitious sounding $60 million.
"It’s about a normal American who gets dragged into this parallel world, this Monster Hunter world.
The Capcom game adaptation also nabs Ti Harris.

Expect Bad Santa meets This Is Us meets Dr Phil in the Joker and Harley Quinn movie.
Screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have finished their script for the Joker and Harley Quinn movie, and it sounds even odder than anyone thought
Speaking to Metro Us, the pair said the script feels like a mash-up of Bad Santa and This Is Us – both of which they actually wrote.
“We had so much fun, I don't know if we have had more fun writing a script in our career,” said Ficarra. “It was sort of like, we wrote Bad Santa a couple of years ago, and it was that sensibility mixed with our This Is Us sensibility. We kind of meshed them together… We were doing a relationship movie but with the sensibility of a Bad Santa, f**ked up, mentally deranged people.”
Getting weirder still, Ficarra goes...

Watch the Transformers prequel go back to its retro roots
The full-length Bumblebee trailer is here and it looks like everything a Transformers movie should be.

The sixth film in Michael Bay’s noisy mech-head series, Bumblebee is the first chapter that he’s not directing himself – with Laika’s Travis Knight (Kubo And The Two Strings) stepping in to strip the series back to its retro roots.
As we’ve already seen from the teaser, the film is set in the 80s – with a sweeter, gentler Iron Giant vibe replacing Bay’s usual bombast. The full trailer throws in a lot more action, but it still has plenty of Amblin heart.

Now that a director has been confirmed for Bond 25, we take a look back at the men who made 007.
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Directing a James Bond movie is pretty big deal. Bond 25 was thrown into chaos when Danny Boyle dropped out, and the news that Cary Fukunaga signed on to replace him has made headlines around the world. But it’s only recently that anyone actually cared who was behind the camera on a 007 film.
Partly because big name “auteurs” don’t often make franchise movies, partly because the Bond producers have always aimed for a kind of stylistic consistency to stop anyone putting a particularly big stamp on it, and mostly because 007 has always been more about a dozen other things that don’t have anything to do with the camerawork – most of the men (and they are all...

Disney CEO Bob Iger says the Star Wars universe is moving too fast
When Disney spent $4 billion on Lucasfilm back in 2012, it made a pretty ambitious plan to make the money back as quickly as possible. That meant sequels, spin-offs, new trilogy plans and TV shows – lots of them – and all as quickly as they could be made. But after a (comparatively) lukewarm reception for Solo, Disney have announced that they might have made a mistake.

Best British movies of all time? (Image: a young Michael Caine in 'Get Carter') Ten years ago, Get Carter, starring Michael Caine as a dangerous-looking London gangster (see photo above), was selected as the United Kingdom's very best movie of all time according to 25 British film critics polled by Total Film magazine. To say that Mike Hodges' 1971 thriller was a surprising choice would be an understatement. I mean, not a David Lean epic or an early Alfred Hitchcock thriller? What a difference ten years make. On Total Film's 2014 list, published last May, Get Carter was no. 44 among the magazine's Top 50 best British movies of all time. How could that be? Well, first of all, people would be very naive if they took such lists seriously, whether we're talking Total Film, the British Film Institute, or, to keep things British, Sight & Sound magazine. Second, whereas Total Film's 2004 list was the result of a 25-critic consensus,...

World War Z reviews Several World War Z reviews are in, and for the most part they have been hardly enthusiastic. Directed by Marc Forster and starring Brad Pitt (who also wears a producer’s hat in the film), World War Z has been a troubled production from the get-go: there were financing woes, the budget reportedly escalated from $125 million to $200 million, there were numerous rewrites and quite a bit of reshooting, in addition to a red-alert delay in the film’s release date. Anyhow, here are a few English-language World War Z review snippets. Of note, perhaps it’s only a coincidence, but the American publications have tended to be considerably more welcoming to World War Z than the British / Irish ones: "What a disaster. This end-of-the-world epic — Brad Pitt’s ‘baby,’ which he’s been working on since 2007 — is mostly bland and extremely bloated. It’s Z for zombie,...
