Boelsen was an office furniture salesman with a BA in theater when the producer of "The Hazing", Dick Davis, came in to make a purchase. They struck a deal where Davis could get the furniture delivered the next day if Boelsen were allowed to read for a part. That part was Barney, which would ultimately go to Charles Martin Smith. Boelsen subsequently landed the part of Phil.
