It seems like Netflix's commitment to spending $500 million in Canadian content over the next five years is already starting to pay off for Canadian films.

The streaming giant has announced that they have acquired the award-winning French Canadian horror movie The Ravenous (Les Affames in French) which premiered at Tiff last year, where it won Best Canadian Feature, before making a successful festival run.

Written and directed by Robin Aubert, the movie unfolds in a remote village in upstate Quebec where a portion of the residents are turning into zombies. The remaining survivors take shelter in the nearby woods searching for other uninfected. The movie stars Marc-Andre Grondin, Monia Chokri and Charlotte St-Martin.

Netflix on Thursday picked up the Canadian indie Les Affames from writer-director Robin Aubert after the French language zombie pic bowed at the Toronto Film Festival and earned the best first feature prize.

The feature will be available on March 2 to Netflix subscribers around the world, except for Canada, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Les Affames will start streaming on the Netflix Canada service starting in 2019.

The film was released theatrically in Canada in October 2017. The Netflix acquisition for Les Affames follows the U.S. video streaming giant coming under fire in Quebec for its local investment strategy.

UK genre festival Horror Channel FrightFest has unveiled the crop of 13 feature films that will play during its Glasgow Film Festival offshoot this year (March 1-3).

Ghost Stories

Appropriately returning for its 13th edition, the event will kick-off with Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman’s Ghost Stories, which stars Nyman alongside Martin Freeman, Paul Whitehouse and Alex Lawther in the tale of a sceptical professor who stumbles across three cases of inexplicable hauntings.

Even though Fantastic Fest 2017 was held just a few weeks ago, this writer is still playing catch up after screening nearly 20 different films during my time in Austin. Tiff has come and gone. Masses of Canadians attend the festival which is what gives it such a special atmosphere. In Cannes, only the industry attends the festival; the public sets up chairs and ladders to watch the red carpet galas and take pictures. The industry action which consists of buying and selling of film rights takes place at the Hyatt Hotel on King Street West. The screenings for both public and industry are down the street at the Tiff Bell Lightbox and around the corner at the Scotia Multiplex. The dense mingling of public and industry at these venues and on the street itself which is closed to traffic for the first weekend but is open to pedestrians, photo-op spots, food trucks creates a festive bevvy of activity to the city.

The zombie film will never die, and as long as it’s popular, people from all over the world will take a stab at cashing in on the success of shows like The Walking Dead or films like World War Z. With Robin Aubert’s Les Affamés, French-Canadian cinema tries its hand at tackling the undead, and the results are mixed at best. The problem with taking on such a ubiquitous subgenre of horror is that it takes a lot to stand out from the herd; people have to either reinvent the wheel, or give it one hell of a spin in order to make a lasting impression. Aubert’s film falls somewhere in between those two outcomes by showing off strong technical skills but within a generic story.

Festival brass unveil Rising Stars, Telefilm Canada Pitch This! finallists, and more.

Mary Harron, Kim Nguyen (both pictured above), Ingrid Veninger, and Denis Côté are among the familiar names in the 26-strong Canadian Features slate that Toronto International Film Festival programmers unveiled on Wednesday.

The selection comprises the highest number of feature directorial debutants and films from Western Canada in recent years. More than 30% of the titles are by first-time feature directors.

Festival brass also announced Short Cuts, Tiff Cinematheque, Rising Stars, Telefilm Canada Pitch This! finallists, and the recipient of the 2017 Len Blum Residency.

The 42nd Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 7-17.

At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the annual event will pay tribute to its home country with a number of options that span the past, present, and future of Canadian creativity. Per usual, the fest has unveiled a slew of titles that will make up its Canadian feature slate — 26 in all — with an eye towards advancing not only established Canadian filmmakers, but rising stars as well.

This year’s Canadian lineup boasts one of the highest numbers of feature directorial debuts ever, as well as one of the highest numbers of films from Western Canada in recent years. Over 30% of the titles have a first-time feature director, while seven out of nine are Tiff alumni.

The Scottish star, who unveiled the world premiere of his feature directorial American Pastoral in Toronto, will collect the honour at BAFTA La’s awards show on October 28.

The Britannia Humanitarian Award is presented to someone “who has used the art form of the moving image or their position in the entertainment industry to create positive social change, and actively shine a light on important humanitarian issues.”

McGregor has worked with Unicef to help children in conflict zones in Iraq and Syria.

As previously announced, Ang Lee will collect the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing, Samuel L. Jackson the Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment, and Ricky Gervais the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy.

Xavier Dolan tied contemporaries Philippe Falardeau and Denis Villeneuve by winning his second Best Feature award at the 17th annual Jutra Awards. Quebec’s answer to the Oscars was a rather suspense-less affair as Mommy claimed nine (plus the top box office award honor) awards winning in all major categories with the exclusion of Best Supporting Actor category win, which would only end up going to Dolan’s other nominated film, Tom at the Farm. Pierre-Yves Cardinal was sublime in his predatory type role and as was the case for several nominees, was hard at work on another project and therefore not on hand for trophyware. Ricardo Trogi’s throwback to awkward teen years tale 1987 did win a trio of awards, but if there were any surprises in the Dolan camp it was the acceptance speeches: Dolan delivered a keynote speech type quality for the last win of the night...

Third edition of the international co-production market focused specifically on genre film production to take place in Brussels in April.

Fantasia International Film Festival’s international co-production market Frontières has unveiled the lineup for its third edition.

Taking place at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifff) from April 10-12, the market will feature 12 Frontières projects and 11 Off-Frontières projects.

Frontières is the first and only co-production market to connect North America with Europe in an environment focused specifically on genre film production.

Among the 12 Frontières projects are new works from the likes of Martin Villeneuve (Aquarica), Borys Lankosz (The Chosen Child), Aj Annila (Don’t Come After Me) and Vincent Lannoo (Robin Hood Vs. Zombies).

Meanwhile, the 11 Off-Frontières projects include Beasts from Resolution directors Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead and Warg from Frostbite’s Anders Banke.

Unlike last year's two filmmaker/film horse race between Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique and Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mere, this year it was all "Villeneuve" and "Incendies". Repeating his wins in all the same categories it won at the Canadian Oscars (Genies) this week (this includes Editing, Screenplay, Best Cinematography by the excellent André Turpin, Best Actress in Lubna Azabal (who forced here co-star Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin to give her own thank you speech). Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower The Toronto International Film Festival has added even more films to their line-up today as the complete line-up was announced, which ended up causing the festival's server to crash, but I was lucky enough to get in and get out before missing out on the information.

First off, the festival's Mavericks line-up is quite interesting, which includes a series of guest presentations and this year will see Edward Norton interview Bruce Springsteen, NBA All-Star and native Canadian Steve Nash will present his hour-long film Into the Wind, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk with the audience as his Cannes Palm d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives was just added to the Masters programme, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty will be interviewed by Michael Moore on politics and cinema and Philip Seymour Hoffman will have his own panel. The sophomore film from the director of Ex Drummer, Swedish thriller Bad Faith, Pablo Trapero's Carancho (my personal favorite film from Cannes 2010), Tsui Hark's Detective Dee, Tom Tykwer's Three and a host of others populate one of the more exciting lineups for the Tiff Contemporary World Cinema Program in recent years. The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.

The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.

It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really. We want it to be a challenge to you [the audience] to see if you can sit and watch it."

Yes, Robin Aubert's A L'Origine D'Un Cri is, indeed, another Quebecois film about death. The difference between this one and others, however, is that Aubert's film has a sense of humor, bar fights, toilet sex and grave robbing. Here's the official synopsis:

A young man finds himself forced to travel with his grandfather in search of his father who has fled with the body of his dead wife. This is a trip where confrontation leads to peace.

Raucous, charming and very funny, Jonathan Sobol's comedy A Beginners Guide to Endings follows three sons as they deal with their gambler father's somewhat complicated legacy. Featuring the legendary Harvey Keitel, the film also stars Scott Caan, Paolo Costanzo, Wendy Crewson, Tricia Helfer, Jason Jones, and J.K. Simmons.

The Toronto Int Film Festival have added tons of Canadian content sprawling across several sections and this year's Midnight Madness opener will be a rowdy one in Michael Dowse's Fubar II. Among the notable world premieres we have Jonathan Sobol's A Beginners Guide to Endings grabing a Gala screening and in the Special Presentations we'll have a green carpet premiere for Sturla Gunnarsson's Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie - she follows the 75 year-old environmentalist during his time outs, and Jacob Tierney will make it a back to back years of preeming at Tiff, after The Trotsky he'll show off Good Neighbours which stars Scott Speedman, Emily Hampshire and Jay Baruchel. Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival (July 9th to 27th), one of the most diverse and prestigious genre festivals there is, made its first lineup announcements, and they don't disappoint. A whopping thirty-five Japanese features will be presented, including the highly acclaimed four-hour epic Love Exposure, from director Sion Sono (Suicide Club). The film has already piled on awards, including Berlin's Fipresci Prize. The opening film will be none other than Takashi Miike's latest opus,Yatterman, based on the 1970s TV series. Perhaps most enticingly, the fest will be host to the North American premiere of Chan-wook Park's Thirst, the vampire flick that earned him the Cannes Jury Prize. The Quebec movie scene will be represented once again with the return of the Fantastic Weekend of Quebec Shorts, which runs from July 24th through to the 26th.
