Even though Fantastic Fest 2017 was held just a few weeks ago, this writer is still playing catch up after screening nearly 20 different films during my time in Austin. On the docket for today’s review round-up is a documentary celebrating haunted attractions—Haunters: The Art of the Scare—a stunning zombie/road film from Quebec—Les Affamés—and my very favorite film from Fantastic Fest, a zombie-centric Christmas musical called Anna and the Apocalypse.
Haunters: The Art of the Scare: I’m a big fan of documentaries, and I’m a big fan of haunted attractions, which is why I think I enjoyed Haunters: The Art of the Scare, even if it does venture off-topic quite a bit. The title insinuates that filmmaker Jon Schnitzer is looking to do a deep dive into the psychology of scaring people, and just how to set up the perfect scare. And while...

Tiff has come and gone. Masses of Canadians attend the festival which is what gives it such a special atmosphere. In Cannes, only the industry attends the festival; the public sets up chairs and ladders to watch the red carpet galas and take pictures. But here the public is as much a part of the festival as the industry.Tiff Bell Lightbox
The industry action which consists of buying and selling of film rights takes place at the Hyatt Hotel on King Street West. The screenings for both public and industry are down the street at the Tiff Bell Lightbox and around the corner at the Scotia Multiplex. The dense mingling of public and industry at these venues and on the street itself which is closed to traffic for the first weekend but is open to pedestrians, photo-op spots, food trucks creates a festive bevvy of activity to the city.

Another year of Tiff came to a close this weekend, and by all accounts it was another resounding success. A few final premieres lit up Toronto, and the highly coveted (and often highly predictive for further awards contention) People’s Choice awards were announced. Ellen Page and Kate Mara were in attendance for the premiere of My Days of Mercy, which tells the story of two women on opposite sides of a criminal case who fall in love. While Tiff was inevitably coming to a close, Halifax native Ellen Page made sure to step out during Canada's biggest film festival. Tiff 2017 Awards: ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ Wins the Coveted People’s Choice Award
This year’s edition of the Toronto International Film Festival has come to a close, and the winner of the Grolsch People’s Choice Award has been named: Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside, Ebbing Missouri.” Hundreds of movies once again screened at Tiff over the last 10 days, but only one could take home the coveted prize, which is often seen as an Oscar bellwether — previous winners include “La La Land,” “12 Years a Slave,” and “The King’s Speech.”

Writer/director Robin Aubert’s zombie road movie Les Affamés recently premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and is set to make its Us premiere later this month at the 2017 Fantastic Fest in Austin. Daily Dead recently caught up with Aubert, and he discussed the inspiration behind his story, his ambitious approach to creating a compelling zombie film, keeping Les Affamés “all in the family,” and more.
Congrats on the film, Robin. I'd love to hear about what your approach to this story was, and bringing all these different characters together throughout the setting of this crazy outbreak.

The zombie film will never die, and as long as it’s popular, people from all over the world will take a stab at cashing in on the success of shows like The Walking Dead or films like World War Z. With Robin Aubert’s Les Affamés, French-Canadian cinema tries its hand at tackling the undead, and the results are mixed at best. The problem with taking on such a ubiquitous subgenre of horror is that it takes a lot to stand out from the herd; people have to either reinvent the wheel, or give it one hell of a spin in order to make a lasting impression. Aubert’s film falls somewhere in between those two outcomes by showing off strong technical skills but within a generic story.
Aubert structures his film around eight different characters trying to survive the aftermath of a zombie outbreak in rural Quebec. There...

With more brains to munch on than your run-of-the-mill horror flick, Ravenous (Les affames) follows a band of survivors joining forces in the Quebec countryside to escape a deadly zombie invasion. Flavored with surreal set pieces, cleverly staged killings and a dark brand of humor, the latest feature from writer-director Robin Aubert has enough quirks to bust out of Canada into international markets.
The rules here may be the same — zombies have taken over the land, can infect you with a bite and are attracted to sound or movement — but Aubert does things a little differently this time....

While many zombie films are set in rural areas, the characters of such films are usually urban dwellers who have escaped cities in the hopes that the countryside is safer, that any possible survivors might be more welcoming, and remoteness means possibility of survival and rebuilding. But Quebecois director & writer Robin Aubert turns much of these tropes on their head, instead focusing on those whose small-town and rural lives take on new meaning in the wake of the apocalypse. In his latest feature Les Affamés, Aubert looks to the non-stereotypical diverse population of one such area, in the fields and dairy farms of rural Quebec, and takes a distintly anti-pastorial view of the hardships that come with rural living, now amplified by the growing...

Xavier Dolan tied contemporaries Philippe Falardeau and Denis Villeneuve by winning his second Best Feature award at the 17th annual Jutra Awards. Quebec’s answer to the Oscars was a rather suspense-less affair as Mommy claimed nine (plus the top box office award honor) awards winning in all major categories with the exclusion of Best Supporting Actor category win, which would only end up going to Dolan’s other nominated film, Tom at the Farm. Pierre-Yves Cardinal was sublime in his predatory type role and as was the case for several nominees, was hard at work on another project and therefore not on hand for trophyware. Ricardo Trogi’s throwback to awkward teen years tale 1987 did win a trio of awards, but if there were any surprises in the Dolan camp it was the acceptance speeches: Dolan delivered a keynote speech type quality for the last win of the night...

The luxurious banquet hall in Toronto’s Royal York hotel was electric with excitement as Tiff senior programmers including Steve Gravestock and Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo announced the robust lineup of Canadian films (several world preems) at this year’s Tiff plus the 40+ short titles (out of an astounding 840 short films — an increase of over 200 titles from last year) that will screen at the prestigious festival. With features populating almost every section at the fest, among the headliner items from English Canada, Cairo Time‘s Ruba Nadda returns to the fest with October Gale, while also world preeming is Bang Bang Baby — Jeffrey St. Jules marks his feature film debut with a film that is equal parts Rocky Horror Picture Show and early Cronenberg. Starring Jane Levy of the recent About Alex, it revolves around a small-town teenager in the ’60s whose dream of becoming a famous singer is dashed...

Unlike last year's two filmmaker/film horse race between Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique and Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mere, this year it was all "Villeneuve" and "Incendies". Repeating his wins in all the same categories it won at the Canadian Oscars (Genies) this week (this includes Editing, Screenplay, Best Cinematography by the excellent André Turpin, Best Actress in Lubna Azabal (who forced here co-star Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin to give her own thank you speech). These wins more than makes up for his loss last year when Villeneuve won the Best Director honor for Polytechnique, but lost in the Best Film category to J'ai tué ma mere. The predictable 13th edition also saw a Genie-Jutra winner from Barney's Version and in the Animated Film category, the Nfb (naturally) supported Theodore Ushev added a Jutra to his Genie for Lipsett Diaries. Best Film/meilleur film 10 1/2 - Pierre Gendron (Zoofilms) Les amours imaginaires - Xavier Dolan,...

Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower The Toronto International Film Festival has added even more films to their line-up today as the complete line-up was announced, which ended up causing the festival's server to crash, but I was lucky enough to get in and get out before missing out on the information.
First off, the festival's Mavericks line-up is quite interesting, which includes a series of guest presentations and this year will see Edward Norton interview Bruce Springsteen, NBA All-Star and native Canadian Steve Nash will present his hour-long film Into the Wind, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk with the audience as his Cannes Palm d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives was just added to the Masters programme, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty will be interviewed by Michael Moore on politics and cinema and Philip Seymour Hoffman will have his own panel. The sophomore film from the director of Ex Drummer, Swedish thriller Bad Faith, Pablo Trapero's Carancho (my personal favorite film from Cannes 2010), Tsui Hark's Detective Dee, Tom Tykwer's Three and a host of others populate one of the more exciting lineups for the Tiff Contemporary World Cinema Program in recent years. Here's the complete lineup:
22nd of May Koen Mortier, Belgium World Premiere
The director of Ex-Drummer returns with an artful meditation on political violence. A security guard fails to prevent a horrific explosion in a shopping mall, then lives through the aftermath as a series of overlapping what-ifs.
Africa United Debs Gardner-Paterson, United Kingdom World Premiere
Africa United tells the extraordinary story of three Rwandan children and their bid to achieve their lifelong dream - to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Football World Cup in Johannesburg.

The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really. We want it to be a challenge to you [the audience] to see if you can sit and watch it."

Yes, Robin Aubert's A L'Origine D'Un Cri is, indeed, another Quebecois film about death. The difference between this one and others, however, is that Aubert's film has a sense of humor, bar fights, toilet sex and grave robbing. Here's the official synopsis:
A young man finds himself forced to travel with his grandfather in search of his father who has fled with the body of his dead wife. This is a trip where confrontation leads to peace.

The trailer of Robin Aubert's À l'origine d'un cri has finally arrived online.
As for the story, the details that The Cultural Post has are few. It's said on Tva Films's web site that it's about a young man who feels compelled to travel with his grand-father. Indeed, the young man wants to find his father who ran away with the corpse of his ex-wife.
Moreover, the film stars Jean Lapointe, Michel Barrette and Patrick Hivon.
Finally, no release date has been announced for the film.

Ok, so I'm lazy.. I copy and pasted the press release, which is after the break, and we have reviews of quite a few of the films playing, including White Lightnin', Left Bank, Blood River, Cryptic, Deadgirl, The Horsemen, I Sell the Dead.. with Kaifeck Murder coming soon (once I can figure out what to write).
Movies I'm really interested in seeing: French Pa flick Mutants, Smash Cut, Possibility of an Island, Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, and Thirst.
But alas, I won't be there. Instead, a friend of ours will be providing some reviews for the week he is there, so everyone give a big thanks to DirtyRobot! Woop!
Check out the film greatness after the break! Oh, and there's more to come...

Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival (July 9th to 27th), one of the most diverse and prestigious genre festivals there is, made its first lineup announcements, and they don't disappoint. A whopping thirty-five Japanese features will be presented, including the highly acclaimed four-hour epic Love Exposure, from director Sion Sono (Suicide Club). The film has already piled on awards, including Berlin's Fipresci Prize. The opening film will be none other than Takashi Miike's latest opus,Yatterman, based on the 1970s TV series. Perhaps most enticingly, the fest will be host to the North American premiere of Chan-wook Park's Thirst, the vampire flick that earned him the Cannes Jury Prize. The Quebec movie scene will be represented once again with the return of the Fantastic Weekend of Quebec Shorts, which runs from July 24th through to the 26th. - Quebec has a very healthy entertainment industry and perhaps is the only place in North America where the box-office hasn't slipped - this is thanks to many films from several genres. Check out the red carpet pics below. Saints-Martyrs-des-Damnés sees a journalist who finds himself in a place where it's hard to know strange leaves off and the supernatural begins. Before long his own photographer goes missing and he encounters a series of weird characters, among them the ghost of a young woman who died on her wedding day. The journalist is drawn into a mysterious world where the notion of identity, including his own, is put into question. Lead Actor: François Chénier He was present at this year's Tiff as well. Chénier and Isabelle Blais Blais starred in The Barbarian Invasions Director: Robin Aubert This is the director's feature film debut. Photos by Pierre-Alexandre
