GÖTEBORG, Sweden — Laughs were aplenty at the Stora Theatern, where Göteborg Film Festival artistic director Jonas Holmberg welcomed the recipient of the Nordic Honorary Dragon Award, fresh off his Golden Globe win for HBO’s “Chernobyl”.
“It wasn’t planned. I thought that will be my only award this year, that’s why I said yes!” – joked Skarsgård, before jumping right into discussing his impressive career. Starting with 1960s series “Bombi Bitt och jag”, a still from which was met with delighted giggles. “This little boy? He didn’t want to be an actor, he wanted to be a diplomat” – he explained. “Dag Hammarskjöld was the hero of my childhood and my idea of a diplomat was someone who travels the world to bring peace. I still haven’t decided what I want to do when I grow up.”

No stranger to the world of prestigious film festivals, Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard drew notice almost from the very beginning of his film career when he won the best actor award at the Berlin Film Festival in 1982 for his role in Hans Alfredson’s “Simple-Minded Murderer.” Next stop for the Emmy-nominated star of HBO’s “Chernobyl” is the Venice Film Festival, where Skarsgard co-stars with Harvey Keitel, Barry Pepper, Julian Sands and Udo Kier in Czech writer-director Vaclav Marhoul’s adaptation of the classic Jerzy Kosinski novel “The Painted Bird.”
“The Painted Bird” was an unusual production as Vaclav Marhoul shot across Eastern Europe for several years. Did you know the unorthodox filming plan when you signed on?
Yes and perhaps it’s an even longer project than you realize. Vaclav called me nine years ago when he obtained the rights and told me about his plans and I knew...

Jan Troell knocks us for a loop with his masterful epic of a Swedish farming family in the 1840s, making the big move to the promised green acres in frontier Minnesota. Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullmann are heartbreakingly deserving and hopeful; the dreamers and the devout and the intolerant come too. The two-film, six-hour saga is a faithful to history and politically neutral. Swedish star of the notorious 1967 film I Am Curious (Yellow)
The Swedish actor Lena Nyman has died of cancer aged 66, a day after the death of Maria Schneider. Both actors were instantly associated with a sexually explicit film: Schneider with Last Tango in Paris and Nyman with I Am Curious (Yellow). But while Schneider's career and life suffered consequently, Nyman went on to establish herself as a well-loved performer in her native country.
Cut by 11 minutes in Britain, I Am Curious (Yellow) (1967), directed by Vilgot Sjöman, was seized by the Us customs, pronounced obscene and banned. But a federal appeals court then ruled that it was protected under the first amendment, which allowed it to be released in March 1969 – though only in New York and New Jersey. From today's perspective, it seems much ado about nothing, but the brouhaha helped it remain the most financially successful foreign film in the...

The final chapter of Stieg Larsson‘s crime trilogy is hitting Us theaters this month and we have a new trailer. I’m working my way through the novels and nearly done with this final book. It’s a fantastic read and plan to watch the trilogy back-to-back before we see David Fincher‘s take on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Directed by Daniel Alfredson, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest stars Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Michalis Koutsogiannakis, Anders Ahlbom and Hans Alfredson. Check out the trailer via Yahoo.
Synopsis: Lisbeth Salander is fighting for her life in more ways than one. In intensive care and charged with three murders, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those corrupt government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life. Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now Salander is fighting back.
