“Brosnan Before Bond”
By Raymond Benson
In 1986, Pierce Brosnan almost became James Bond, nearly a decade before he actually did so. He had been cast to replace Roger Moore as the iconic 007, but at the last minute, NBC waved his contract for the television series Remington Steele at him, exercising the option to make another season. Brosnan was out, and Timothy Dalton was in.
And then… Remington Steele’s new season ended up consisting of only six episodes, finishing its run in early 1987. So, Brosnan had been baited and switched. Nevertheless, in the interim years between then and his appearance in GoldenEye (1995), the actor set about establishing himself as a leading man in feature films.
One of these early starring roles was in the 1988 production, The Deceivers, a British picture made by the elite Merchant Ivory Productions, and it was produced by Ismail Merchant himself.

Nicholas Meyer’s ‘other’ fantastic film project was ignored for all the wrong reasons; Pierce Brosnan fills a heroic leading role in a revisit of The Stranglers of Bombay, but filmed on location with great attention to authentic details. An officer of the East India Company detects an incredibly murderous cult of Kali-worshipping Thugs, a criminal underclass of thieves that practice ritual mass murder. The story has roots in history, snarled in colonial injustice and xenophobia. It’s a period picture unafraid to be controversial. Also starring Saeed Jaffrey and Helena Mitchell.

Satyajit Ray is broadly regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time, and his acclaims support the claim. His works are mostly based on the Bengali language movie industry in India. However, he made two movies in the Hindi language, both based on the works of the famed author Munshi Premchand. “Sadgati,” a TV movie, is often considered amongst Ray’s least impressive movies. His first movie in the Hindi language, nevertheless, is a different story. “The Chess Players” is often included in the conversation of the best Ray films and is frequently said to be one of the most calculated movies made by the director.

We now dive into Part 2 of the songs of Bollywood. 90s Bollywood had a hefty past of classic films and songs to surpass. From Dilip Kumar walking along a cliff, Dev Anand comically falling down, Raj Kapoor thinking about death and legacy, to Rajesh Khanna staring out at the sea (on another cliff), Sunny Deol stomping his feet as his gang mates went up the hill and Rishi Kapoor righting the wrongs of his past life through a song. How do you top that and still be the lovable, funky, fun and completely absurd Bollywood we knew and love… Easy! From the soft, easy listening music and some jazz combinations of the earlier films, the music and dance sequences transposed to low budget big band music taking on the blasting of the base club beats Ko-ing the western world with a bigger dose of desi swag. As well as dancing queens and dhak dhak,...

Engaging actor known for his many film and TV roles which included parts in The Man Who Would Be King, My Beautiful Laundrette and Coronation Street
It would have been easy to view the actor Saeed Jaffrey, who has died aged 86, as a playboy and bon vivant. Loquacious, irrepressible and mildly raffish, he recounted his peccadilloes in his autobiography, Saaed: An Actor’s Journey (1998), with rueful charm. But a track record that includes more than 180 film and television roles – including in Gandhi, My Beautiful Laundrette, A Passage to India and The Jewel in the Crown – and almost as many on radio, is not the mark of a dilettante. The image of a roué concealed a man who was conservative, courteous and old-fashioned in his values as well as deeply connected to his Shia Muslim roots.

The actor, who has died aged 86, straddled English-language and Hindi cinema, and brought an urbane wit and seductive charm to everything he did
Saeed Jaffrey was a character actor of enormous accomplishment, urbane wit and avuncular charm, deeply honoured in UK theatrical circles for his groundbreaking Shakespearian tours of India.
His very unparochial career let him straddle two different kinds of cinema – Hindi and English language – and also subsets within these: auteur cinema and Bollywood, British and Hollywood, as well as TV both in high-gloss drama and soapy form. To all he brought intelligence, a lifetime’s accumulation of technique and style, and a seductive, resonant voice.

Just 20 movies.
First starting in the brilliant John Schlesinger film Sunday Bloody Sunday, Daniel Day-Lewis has become arguably one of the greatest and most highly regarded thespians in the history of cinema. And yet he has only 20 credits to his name. For a craft that sees even the biggest of Hollywood stars sign on for just about any project that comes their way, Daniel Day-Lewis has become a genre defining actor on almost a part-time like schedule.
It’s not something new for the actor either.
Look at one of his greatest achievements, Stephen Frears’ My Beautiful Laundrette. 14 years after his debut, this marked his first performance of any real note, taking secondary billing in what would become one of the definitive cinematic achievements of 1980s British cinema.

On Saturday morning, Deepti Naval woke up to the rude shock of hearing that her favourite co-star Farooq Sheikh was no more. Stifling her sobs, Deepti says, "I spoke to Shabana in the morning. We were both simply howling on the phone. My last interaction with Farooq was two months ago at the Sharjah Book Fair. I was invited to read from my books and he was in conversation with me. He was a voracious reader. I woke up to say, 'what a beautiful morning'! And then a friend called and put the phone to the television where I hear Farooq is no more. What do I say? He was not just a constant part of my career, but also of my life. Oh God! It's so hard to believe he's gone. We worked together for the first time in Chashme Buddoor and we did 7-8 films together after that.

Mumbai, April 7: Rubbishing reports that Sai Paranjpye is upset about the remake of her "Chashme Buddoor", David Dhawan says he has done nothing that would offend the director of the old classic.
"How can she be upset without seeing my 'Chashme Baddoor'? I have not taken anything from her film except the idea of three friends, two of whom are 'pukka kaminey' types. That apart, if Sai was to see my 'Chashme Buddoor', she wouldn't recognise it," said Dhawan, a director who is an expert in churning out hit comedies like "Hero No.1", "Biwi No. 1" and "Partner".
The 1981 movie starred Farooque Sheikh, Deepti Naval, Rakesh Bedi, Ravi Baswani and Saeed Jaffery, while the new one features Ali Zafar, Taapsee Pannu, Siddharth, Divyendu.

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

The Mumbai Film Festival (October 18 – 25, 2012) is the largest film festival in India with over 100,000 attending. The Festival is 14 years old itself but Reliance Big Entertainment, the company that backs both Dreamworks and Im Global, one of U.S.’s foremost international sales agents, has backed this festival for the last 4 years and the result is a scaled up festival. It is part of the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image, a not for profit trust founded in 1997 by Indian Film Industry personalities led by renowned filmmaker late Hrishikesh Mukherji. Its 220 films are all free.
Parenthetically, though not part of the festival itself, Mumbai is "'in the news" with the Tiff's City-to-City program focusing on Mumbai. This was organized by Cameron Bailey directly with filmmakers in Mumbai and is not a Mumbai Film Festival program…Also of interest is that Mumbai also hosts India's largest international Queer Film Festival For Everyone which was held in May of this year with the Alliance Francaise de Bombay.
The Mumbai Film Festival also works with Unifance and French Rendez-Vous.
Sections include Discovery, Retrospective - this year to feature 50 years of the Cannes Critics Week, International Competition which awards $200,000 to a first feature.
Three new developments are taking place this year.
1. To celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema, the festival is launching a new competition for Indian films (called 'India Gold') with cumulative cash rewards of around $30,000 Us. The winners will be selected by an international jury to be announced.
2. The festival is moving to historic South Bombay. The festival, previously held mostly in the Juhu and Andheri districts of Mumbai – where Bollywood is located - will now take place in the south of the city, the historic center of old colonial Bombay with amazing Victorian landmarks – train station, court house, with the National Centre for the Performing Arts (Ncpa) and Inox Theatre as the main venues. The retrospective of restored films will be screened in a third theater - a historic art deco theater named the Liberty Cinema – so named because it was built in 1949, the year of India's independence from Britain. For more information on the Liberty see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Cinema
3. The Spotlight on Film Restoration and Preservation. For the first time, a section of the festival (programmed by Ian Birnie, U.S. Representative for the Mumbai Film Festival) will be devoted to screenings of restored classic films with a particular focus on Twentieth Century Fox. Screenings will be introduced by various archivists all of whom are leading experts in the field. A panel will bring together Western archivists and their Indian counterparts and the discussion will focus on the economic challenges and new technologies that are changing the future of film preservation.

Sections of the Festival
Dimensions Mumbai, a short film competition of films dealing with any aspect of life in Mumbai and targeted to the Mumbai Youth below 25 years was introduced in 2008.
An International Competition for the First Feature Film of directors with the award money of Us $ 150,000 (Us $ 100,000 for the Best Film and Us $ 50,000 for the Jury Grand Prize) was introduced in 2009. The UK Film 'White Lightn'in won the 2011 Best Film Award and Austria-Italy co-production La Pivillina won the Jury Grand Prize.
The Audience Choice Award carrying U.S. $ 20,000 for any film participating in the Festival, (excepting the Retrospectives and Tribute sections) was introduced in 09 as well. The Indian Film 'Road to Sangam' won this award.
International Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on the Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos.
A new initiative Mumbai Young Critics was introduced in '09 as well. 24 college students selected from more than 80 aspirants recommended by the colleges in Mumbai went through a workshop conducted by the German writer and film critic Daniel Kothenschulte for three days before the Festival. This group watched the films in the festival, wrote about them in Festival publications and newspapers and also selected a film for the Mumbai Young Critics Award.
Last year the festival showcased over 200 films from 60 countries across various sections at its three venues- Cinemax Versova, Cinemax Sion and Metro Big Cinemas.
The festival hosts a special section ‘4me Rendez-Vous’, in collaboration with Unifrance, Embassy of France in India and Consulate General of France in Mumbai. The section screens the best of New French Cinema, which last year included ‘The Snows of Kilimanjaro’, ‘The Conquest’ and ‘Declaration of War’ amongst others.
Last year's highlight was the special presentation by Lee Yong Kwan, Director, Busan International Film Festival, who presented a selection of the latest Asian Films from Busan.
Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on the legendary actor Morgan Freeman. Olivia Harrison widow of George Harrison presented the documentary film “George Harrison: Living in the material World”.
The Festival strengthened and consolidated its academic activities with an Indo-German Script Development Workshop scheduled from 11th to the 13th of October just ahead of the festival opening. Speakers at the workshop included the renowned directors Dani Levy, Thorsten Schulz, Screenwriters Anjum Rajabali and Sooni Taraporevala amongst others.
This year's Festival continues to facilitate cinema business with the Mumbai Film Mart, created 'by' the industry, 'for' the industry, 'in' the industry hub - Mumbai, the Film Capital of India. The Mumbai Film Mart saw participation from the biggest Entertainment Industry players, both from India and abroad. In the three days, over 2,000 meeting requests were received, 400 meetings were carried out face to face, while an equal number took place among the senior decision makers from leading film production houses, buyers, sellers, festival programmers and independent filmmakers as they milled around and networked with each other.
Among the many firsts, the Mart attracted all the forthcoming big ticket films such as ‘Ra One’, ‘Don 2’, ‘Rockstar’, ‘Ricky Behl v/s Ladies’, ‘The Dirty Picture’, ‘DesiBoyz’ , tabled for acquisition and distribution in the non-traditional markets for Indian Cinema in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, Germany, France and Latin America. The focus on these countries attracted leading buyers that included Huayi Brothers Media Corp. (China), NikkatsuCorp.(Japan), Happinet Corp.(Japan), Showbox (Korea), Apex Entertainment (Korea), Cj Entertainment (Korea), Top Films (Ukraine), Novo films (France), Rapid Eye (Germany), Im Global (USA), amongst many others.
The International Jury will be responsible choosing the winners out of 14 films, all first features of debut filmmakers around the world, awarding them with a huge cash prize. This way we would like to recognize and encourage the first time filmmakers, going in line with the festival theme of discovery.
Apart from the main international section, there are many other sections including the world cinema, Indian Frame, New Faces in Indian Cinema, Documentaries etc. Please do check out their website www.mumbaifilmfest.com for more information. Last year, it screened about 220 films from 60 countries.

Kidulthood director Menhaj Huda returns to UK cinemas this week with Everywhere and Nowhere, another coming-of-age tale focusing on a British Asian teenager (James Floyd, pictured below) wrestling with how to lead his own life, while having to contend with what’s expected of him from his family and culture.
We had the chance to chat with Huda about the film (which he co-wrote) and how he related to the characters in the film when he was growing up.
How much does the film reflect your own upbringing?
The side which wasn’t a struggle for me was my decision to take a creative path in my career (in the film, lead character Ash wants to be a DJ, much to the disapproval of his father).
The double life thing was definitely something I encountered, and trying to keep my love for clubbing/raving separate from my family.
This is another rites of passage tale.

Menhaj Huda states that "this film was born of a need to fill a gap, in film terms, to bring Asian youth in a realistic film with a dramatic story to the big screen in the UK". However, his movie has a plot identical to Ken Loach's excellent Ae Fond Kiss: Asian boy wants to give up his accountancy studies and work in a disco and comes into conflict with his narrow-minded middle-class family who object to him going out with a British girl. In fact almost everything in the film is pretty familiar, the chief differences here being the setting (London, rather than Glasgow) and the girl (Swedish). It does, however, have, a likable hero in James Floyd, though the two best-known actors, Art Malik and Saeed Jaffrey, could both have done with firmer direction.

Director Menhaj Huda’s controversial feature debut Kidulthood was met with mixed reviews upon its release back in 2006. The film, which followed a group of hedonistic teenagers as they ran riot around inner city London, was accused by some of glamorising violence, while others found its sense of realism refreshing.
His latest offering, Everywhere & Nowhere, which he also wrote the screenplay for, once again focuses on youth culture in London. The film follows Ash and his friends Zaf (Adam Deacon), Jaz (Elyes Gabel) and Riz (Neet Mohan), as they each struggle to reconcile their multi-cultural life in Britain with their traditional Asian upbringing.
Ash dreams of pursuing a career in music and discovers a talent for mixing classic Bollywood songs with contemporary hip-hop. When local DJ Ronnie (Simon Webbe) offers him the warm-up slot at his next gig, Ash jumps at the chance. Torn between his...

Film-maker James Ivory explains his lifelong obsession with Indian miniature painting – and how it helped unlock the country's secrets
It was the 18th-century Venetian painter Canaletto who provided the fateful introduction between myself and the art of Indian miniature painting, and thus to India and even my entire life to come. The first film I ever made, in 1956, was a documentary about Venice and the many artists who had painted her. In the course of making this film, I came to admire Canaletto's etchings of the city. Hoping to find one, I went to see a print dealer in San Francisco named Raymond Lewis. I had not been told that he also dealt in Indian miniature paintings.
On the day we met, Lewis had been showing his stock of Indian pictures to a buyer; they were still spread around his gallery when I came in. Years later, when I thought back on that afternoon,...

Seeing the actor in the flesh at Edinburgh's gala screening of The Man Who Would Be King unexpectedly enhanced my viewing experience, and it got me thinking about when fuzzy feelings intrude on films
On Sunday I went along to the gala screening of The Man Who Would Be King at the Edinburgh film festival, and it turned out to be a great event for all sorts of reasons. First of all, The Man Who Would Be King is one of those great popular classics that you see on TV all the time, but rarely, if ever, gets on the big screen. (More good news: it's going to get a full cinema release in the autumn.)
All sorts of nuances and gestures become evident that get lost on TV and Sean Connery's understated acting style really comes into its own – I don't think I'd be alone in having always...

When studios put out themed DVD collections for whatever occasion, the final result rarely does the subject in question justice. When they seek to honor independent flicks they typically just go for the most popular ones and not the best. For foreign films they’ll select the few that actually made ripples and not the underdog that had to fight for every theater screen. However, when MGM compiled its Cinema Pride Collection in honor of June being Gay Pride month they hit the nail on the head – and they hit it dead on. The collection not only features some of the favorites within the gay community but it features a few highly acclaimed heavy hitters as well. This may just be one of the best box sets a studio has ever released that isn’t based on one actor or director’s filmography. It has variety and it has quality in spades.
