It took an extra year (thanks to the pandemic), but the inaugural cohort from the Netflix Series Director Development Program is finally celebrating its completion.
Nine directors hoping to expand their opportunities in episodic work — nominated by a creative executive at the streamer and ultimately selected by Netflix exec producers — have spent the past two years participating in a part-time program that involved weekly classes and a dozen training sessions as well as hands-on experience and directing assignments on a Netflix show. Three participants did not direct an episode through the program as a result of the pandemic and what Netflix described as other “unforeseen circumstances,” but all were paid DGA scale, and also received stipends, travel and accommodations for shadowing assignments.
“The Netflix Original Series Directors Development Program aims to be the gold standard in the industry,” said the workshop’s director and lead mentor,...

Cinematographer Eric Koretz was deep into work when the 2022 Emmy nominations were announced, and had no way of learning that he’d received a bid — his career-first — for shooting the fourth and final season of “Ozark.” “I was actually on set with no internet,” Koretz revealed to Gold Derby in a new webchat (watch our exclusive video interview above). “I found out a couple hours later — but it was over text, basically, when all the texts started coming in.”
One of three DPs to work on the 14-episode fourth season of the Netflix drama — which was split into two parts that debuted on January 21 and April 29, respectively — Koretz didn’t even board the show until halfway into its farewell installment, but went on to shoot a quartet of episodes from Part 2: “The Cousin of Death” (Ep. 8), “Pick a God and Pray” (Ep. 9), “You’re the Boss” (Ep. 10) and his nominated episode,...

Chicago – Ken Follett’s “The Pillars of the Earth” is in the great tradition of old-fashioned adventure serials. The line between good and evil is clearly drawn and there is little doubt which side of the line each character belongs. This story is a battle between heart and hierarchy, nobility and debauchery, light and darkness. It’s fraught with clichés, melodramatic in the extreme, and entertaining as hell.
Follett’s best-selling 1989 novel must’ve been daunting material for this German/Canadian co-production to tackle. Taking the form of an eight-part miniseries, the film runs over seven hours without commercials, yet still manages to feel somewhat rushed, particularly in its initial episodes, as dozens of characters and story threads are breathlessly set up. Yet once the series settles on its primary subject: the construction of a cathedral in Kingsbridge, England, during the 12th century, “Pillars” becomes an engrossing portrait of how...

With so much fuss being made about J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot, it's easy to forget that there is another successful franchise out there with Star... in the title. That would be Stargate, which is due for its own sort of makeover later this year with the premiere of Stargate Universe. This is no sign that the concept is struggling, though. Indeed, the slew of awards that Stargate productions won at the recent Leo Awards in Vancouver, British Columbia (the home base of CinemaSpy) shows that it continues to be admired.
The Leo Awards are presented by the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of B.C.. They were established in 1998 to celebrate excellence in film and television productions that are made in the province. Stargate series and movies are largely filmed in Vancouver. At this years Celebration and Gala Ceremonies for the Leos, which took place on May 8 and...
