They say, “You can’t judge a book by its cover”, but if you’re watching Yellowstone, it’s hard not to see the plot’s hidden pages—especially those lifted straight from The Godfather. Taylor Sheridan’s hit TV series has long sported its influences like a cowboy wearing spurs, and now, even the most casual viewers are spotting the family feud parallels with Francis Ford Coppola’s legendary mafia saga.

And for those scratching their heads, here’s a nugget of trivia: Sheridan’s original pitch for Yellowstone as ‘The Godfather in Montana’ didn’t exactly knock the socks off HBO executives. But against all odds, the show has transformed skeptics into devoted fans. And just when you thought the drama was at its peak, Sheridan’s gearing up to bring us the fifth and final season by this year’s end.

Kathy Bates has announced she's retiring after Matlock, so here's a look at the highlights of an incredible career!
CBS had announced Matlock in 2023, a reboot of the 1980s NBC series starring Andy Griffith as a lawyer whose charming manner hides his legal brilliance defending people accused of murder. The new version has Kathy Bates as Madeline "Matty" Matlock, a veteran attorney returning to work for a major firm. She uses her supposed scatterbrained persona and age to make sure she's underestimated before pulling off a win.
The 2023 Hollywood strikes delayed the show, but it is ready to premiere this September. Before that happens, Bates announced that she would be retiring after this series, no matter how long it runs.
This is my last dance. It becomes my life. Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent. Because I can't hold it back, and I just want my life. Everything I've prayed for,...

While he may be best remembered for his tough guy roles in classics like The Godfather and (Best Movie You Never Saw fave) Thief, actor James Caan had a soft side. Back in 1976, he did a cameo (as himself) in the underrated Mel Brooks comedy Silent Movie. The role led to an unlikely friendship with the director, helped by the fact that they only lived about a block away from each other. In his fabulous book, All About Me! (Buy it here), Brooks affectionately remembers how, around the time they were shooting Silent Movie, Caan’s dog gave birth to five puppies, and he offered one to Brooks, and his wife, the legendary actress Anne Bancroft.
“Anne and I took him up on that,” Brooks remembered. “We went to his house, and one of the pups left the pack and made his way over to us. So, instead of picking out a pup,...

Carl Weathers was an unknown actor on a cattle call audition for a movie when he was introduced to the screenwriter — also a struggling nobody — and was told to do the scene with him. The writer mumbled his way through the lines and afterwards, Weathers, nervous that he blew his shot, blurted out, “If you get me a real actor, I could do a lot better.”
Turns out the writer was the actor. But fortunately, Sylvester Stallone was not insulted, and Weathers got the role of Apollo Creed, changing movie history, and his life, forever.
“He showed up at the eleventh hour with all the attributes: the body, the skill, the soul and the acting chops,” Stallone said in a video tribute after Weathers’ death in February at the age of 76. “I never could have accomplished what we did with ‘Rocky’ without him. He was magic.”

Michael Corleone in The Godfather, played by Al Pacino, is hailed as one of the finest performances in world cinema. His memorable character transition in the Francis Ford Coppola film is still discussed among worldwide fans. But interestingly, Al Pacino was never the original choice for the role. They had their eyes on another legendary performer, Robert Redford for the role.

The Godfather presented a beautiful amalgamation of popular and lesser-known stars who looked straight out of Mario Puzo’s bestselling novel. However, the 1972 masterpiece had a very problematic production schedule due to an intense conflict between Paramount and Francis Ford Coppola. Paramount wanted it to be a more star-studded affair with better-known stars.

Sure, there’s no shortage of gravelly-voiced icons in Tinseltown, but if there’s one name that rings a bell louder than a Las Vegas jackpot, it’s Alex Rocco. Ever wondered how he got convinced to play a bespectacled Jewish casino owner in The Godfather?
Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather | Paramount Pictures
The late, great Alex Rocco, who rose to fame with his cocky portrayal of Moe Greene in a 1972 Mafia classic, actually just left us with indelible lines like “You don’t buy me out. I buy you out.” Oh wait, he also taught us that sometimes a nudge from a visionary director like Francis Ford Coppola can turn an initial ‘no’ into a Hollywood legend.
Yes, landing the role of Moe Greene wasn’t as plain as it might seem. Initially, Rocco was hesitant to take on the part, especially given the character’s Jewish background.

David O. Russell is in the news again, but not for a new project. The director, who's brought audiences such eclectic films as "Spanking the Monkey," "American Hustle," and "Silver Linings Playbook," has built a reputation as one of the most chaotic filmmakers working today, and on more than one occasion, firsthand accounts have emerged alleging that the chaos tends to veer into verbal abuse -- or worse.
Russell still seems to have support in the industry: In 2022, more than two decades after the first reports of Russell's alleged on-set bullying and violence emerged, the filmmaker released "Amsterdam," a star-studded film featuring the likes of such beloved famous folks as Margot Robbie, Anya-Taylor Joy, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, and even Taylor Swift. The movie starred Christian Bale, a frequent Russell collaborator who extolled the virtues of the controversial filmmaker while doing press for the movie.

It’s the movie that changed the course of his life — and American cinema — but Al Pacino had not seen The Godfather in its entirety in decades. So when he invited me to watch Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 gangster epic with him and some of his friends at a small screening room in Hollywood last year, I jumped at the chance. I was at work hosting a podcast, The Godfather: A Film We Can’t Refuse, which Paramount produced and which Audible will release Aug. 22. The 10-episode series, including conversations with castmembers, filmmakers and critics, grapples with The Godfather‘s legacy on topics like masculinity, power, the American dream — even meatballs, in an episode that features chef Tom Colicchio.

Almost half a century ago, a cinematic juggernaut stormed into theaters, heavily transforming the landscape of Hollywood. Released in 1972, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather swiftly rose to the pinnacle of box office success, sealing its fate as one of the most influential films ever produced.
Also spotlighting James Caan as Santino ‘Sonny’ Corleone, the film catapulted its stars into phenomenal stardom. Yet, it’s a real head-scratcher that, despite the movie’s sky-high acclaim, Caan found himself under a dark cloud of dissatisfaction.

A new take on Stephen King’s Misery has been made, but it can’t find a buyer willing to distribute it. More on the story here.
Back in January we covered a story which claimed that a Misery remake was in the works. Three decades after its release, the 1990 film is still considered to be one of the best Stephen King adaptations ever, thanks in no small part to the brilliance of Kathy Bates and James Caan in their respective leading roles.
Kathy Bates and James Caan memorably played a crazed fan and author respectively, with Rob Reiner directing a screenplay by the eminent William Goldman. Bates would go on to win an Oscar for her performance as Annie Wilkes, a nurse who imprisons her writing idol and forces him to revive her favourite literary character from the ‘dead’.

Zooey Deschanel says she remembers the late actor and comedian Bob Newhart as “kind and generous” from her time working with him on “Elf.” Newhart died July 18, and the pair worked on the 2003 Christmas movie alongside Will Ferrell and James Caan.
“I always say the best actors are very generous people,” Deschanel told Variety on the purple carpet at Sunday’s premiere of “Harold and the Purple Crayon” at The Culver Theater in Culver City. “He was really such a kind and generous man and so funny, but not wrapped up in himself or anything. He was just kind, and sweet and wonderful to work with.”

The comedic legend Bob Newhart has died at 94. You might know him from famous sitcoms like The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart. Or, if you’re much younger, he’s Papa Elf.
Newhart was 73 when he starred as Will Ferrell’s adoptive father in 2003’s Elf. With those adorable mustard yellow tights and that kelly green suit and hat, it’s bizarre that younger generations first became acquainted with Newhart when he was dressed as a Keebler elf, nearly getting squished when Buddy adoringly sat on his lap. Comedies may not get the prestige and glory of dramas when it comes to awards, but the filmmakers behind them would probably agree that they're infinitely harder to make. The hope is that what's being captured on set will make audiences laugh months, sometimes even years, after production is wrapped. In order to determine whether something is funny, you're relying on a much smaller crew of people, from those who wrote the script to the crew behind the camera. If they're laughing, you're probably doing something right. But comedy is extremely subjective, and you never really know if you've got a true crowd-pleaser until those first test screening reactions start rolling in.
But in the case of Will Ferrell and Jon Favreau's modern classic holiday comedy "Elf," which follows an orphan human raised by elves at the North Pole as he tries to reconnect with his estranged biological father...

In yet another example of life imitating art, Will Ferrell irritated James Caan nearly as much as Buddy bugged his biological father Walter Hobbs in the Christmas comedy Elf. In fact, between scenes, Caan would tell Ferrell that he didn’t understand why everyone found the Saturday Night Live star so hilarious.
“He would tease me,” Ferrell confessed on Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s MeSsy podcast. “In between setups, he would be like, ‘I don’t get you. You’re not funny.’ And I’m like, ‘I know. One Shot invites close readings of the basic unit of film grammar.Thief.In a now-iconic scene from Michael Mann's Thief (1981), Frank (James Caan) and Jessie (Tuesday Weld) drink coffee at an all-night diner. He’s dragged her here after letting her languish alone at a local dive where they were meant to rendezvous. They settle into opposite sides of the booth: she’s hunched forward, he’s arched back. Cups and saucers lay before them; bubbles of neon decorate the dark beyond the window. The shot is symmetrical, succinct, and exceptionally Mannian. The immutable diner and its pervasive simplicity come to encapsulate the auteur’s vision and true concerns. Frank is the first in a line of Mann archetypes: solitary bruisers and consummate professionals in their chosen fields leading lives stripped down to their barest essentials. It stands to reason that people in pursuit of a less effortful existence...

Ferrell confirmed there was “a lot of validity to that” and shared a story from his childhood. “You know what’s interesting about that [analysis]? This is like a minor thing—it’s not really even trauma. I remember being so embarrassed because my real name is John. John William Ferrell,” he said.

Ferrell confirmed there was “a lot of validity to that” and shared a story from his childhood. “You know what’s interesting about that [analysis]? This is like a minor thing—it’s not really even trauma. I remember being so embarrassed because my real name is John. John William Ferrell,” he said.

Turns out, James Caan needed some convincing to find Will Ferrell’s “Elf” performance funny.
During Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s “Messy” podcast, Ferrell recalled how his late co-star Caan didn’t “get” his humor at first. Instead, Ferrell drove Caan “crazy” just like his character, who was Caan’s onscreen son, did. Legendary star Caan died in 2022.
“James Caan, may he rest in peace, we had such a good time working on that movie,” Ferrell said. “He would tease me. Christina, you know: I like to do bits but I’m not like ‘on’ all the time. In between set ups, [Caan] would be like, ‘I don’t get you. You’re not funny.’ And I’m like, ‘I know. I’m not Robin Williams.’ And he was like, ‘People ask me: “Is he funny?” And I’m like, “No, he’s not funny.”‘ It was all with love but at the same time…...

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga and Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis have a lot in common if fans come to think of it. Both films have been in development for decades and both directors invested huge money into the films. Costner’s film was released on Friday and it could only earn $11 million, giving clear signs of bombing at the box office.

Comparing box office runs over the past decades is a tricky, because the movie business has undergone so many shifts. Around 40 years ago, a typical theatrical run could be 6 to 12 months, as films typically debuted in large urban centers before eventually being distributed to smaller towns and rural areas. It seems impossible now, but in the time before the widespread adoption of home video and pay cable, it could be years between a film's theatrical run and a home viewing experience. "Star Wars" (1977) was first released on video (VHS and Betamax) in the United States in May 1982, five years after its May 1977 premiere, and it would appear on pay cable nine months later before finally airing on American broadcast TV on February 26, 1984.
These new technologies drastically altered the marketplace, making "I'll wait for it on video" a perfectly reasonable decision. The digital revolution of the 2000s further accelerated this trend.

Jeff Nichols' "Alien Nation" remake is still happening, but it won't have the "Alien Nation" title anymore.
In 2016, the writer/director of films like "Mud," "Take Shelter," and "Midnight Special" was tapped to direct a remake of the 1988 film "Alien Nation" by 20th Century Fox. A couple of years later, Nichols gave us an update about the project, explaining that it was set in his home state of Arkansas, would have a $100 million budget, and he referred to it as "epic." But when Disney purchased Fox in 2019, the movie fell by the wayside and it seemed to be dead forever. In early 2021, Nichols revealed that Disney asked him to expand his screenplay into a 10-episode TV series, and at the time, he was awaiting word about whether or not that version would move forward. Then, a few months later, an announcement came out that Nichols was developing an original sci-fi...

After Megalopolis‘ Cannes premiere proved to be divisive, the top brass in Hollywood was more hesitant to give a home to Francis Ford Coppola’s audacious sci-fi epic, which he also self-financed. But finally, three months after its Cannes debut, the film finally found a distributor in Lionsgate, who signed a deal with the renowned filmmaker to release it in the U.S. and Canada.
But on top of the $120M that Coppola spent to bring his vision to reality, Megalopolis is now set to cost him an additional expense, as Lionsgate isn’t going to do the heavy lifting for its marketing.

We all know Wes Anderson has his repertoire of actors: Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, and on and on and on. And over the course of his career, they have all grown accustomed to – and perfectly fit – his signature style. But that’s really hard to do early on, when none of this has been established and you’re just trying to get that first film completed. Now imagine doing it while a sometimes short-tempered Oscar nominee watches it all unfold.
Wes Anderson recalled that when making his first movie, James Caan didn’t understand just what this rinky-dink, $5 million production was even going for. “I remember James Caan came to the set of Bottle Rocket, and he was really saying, ‘What are you guys doing?’ We were doing things that he thought, ‘This is not how movies are made,’ but he sort of adapted to us.”

Wes Anderson wants to adapt a Charles Dickens story for the big screen. The acclaimed director has previously helmed a stop-motion take on Roald Dahl's 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' and has revealed that he would love to tackle the work of the celebrated Victorian novelist.Speaking at the Annecy Animation Festival on Wednesday (12.06.24), Wes said: "I feel like the writer who I would like to adapt – who I don't know if I can see the opportunity – is Dickens."I would like to do a big Dickens story. They've all been adapted. They've all been done many times. They're so interesting. People keep going back to them. They're so entertaining and so complex."Anderson has been working on his latest film 'The Phoenician Scheme' in Germany and says he was joined by frequent collaborators on the set of the movie – which he puts down to his unique methodology on set.

Fresh off his recent Oscar win, Wes Anderson made his first-ever visit to the Annecy Animation Festival, where he reminisced about his past while also sharing a bit about the shoot for his next feature.
Anderson took part in a conversation Wednesday aimed at giving animation students insight into his upbringing, influences and pre-Hollywood projects. The event began with a montage of animated moments from his movies, leading the filmmaker to note that he didn’t realize he had dabbled so extensively in animation and that he didn’t even have a clear memory of some of those clips from his own work.
During the session, Anderson was asked about the importance of family in his career, given that he has worked with brother Eric Anderson and is also known for collaborating multiple times with various members of his films’ cast and crew. Francis Ford Coppola made one of the greatest crime films ever when he adapted Mario Puzo’s The Godfather. The Marlon Brando-starrer saw the veteran win his second Oscar for Best Actor and was a breakthrough for Al Pacino. Coppola then followed it up with The Godfather – Part II, which became the first sequel to win Best Picture.

De Niro won the Oscar for Best Supporting Role for the film and had a breakthrough with the film. Fred Roos, the casting director turned producer who jump-started the career of Jack Nicholson and collaborated often with Francis Ford Coppola, sharing a best picture Oscar with the filmmaker for The Godfather Part II, has died. He was 89.
Roos died Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills, a publicist announced.
It’s part of Hollywood lore that before Harrison Ford became a famous actor, he was laboring as a carpenter to make ends meet. What some might not know is that it was at Roos’ house where Ford was woodworking when the casting director befriended him, eventually pushing him for roles in George Lucas’ American Graffiti (1973) and Star Wars (1977) and Coppola’s The Conversation (1974).
And it was Roos who convinced Lucas — who had been leaning toward Amy Irving — that Carrie Fisher should portray Princess Leia in Star Wars. (Roos did not have an official role on that film.)

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Al Pacino in the role of Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic crime drama The Godfather. However, Coppola went out of his way to cast the actor after Paramount wanted a Marvel star in the role of Michael. Interestingly, Al Pacino, a newcomer at the time, had a different role in mind. He eyed the role of the hot-headed Sonny Corleone, which later went to James Caan.
