Porthwar-based Santram is killed while fleeing from Muslims during the religious riots of 1948 following the partition of Pakistan from India. His wife, Tagpyariye, manages to flee along with their sons, Kartar and Ram, but gets separated from them, and the children end up with her servant, Dukhiya. Shortly thereafter Kartar, too, gets separated, leaving Ram alone with Dukhiya. Three years later, Ram runs away after being physically abused and forced to steal by Dukhiya, and unknowingly befriends Kartar, and the duo go to work with Subedar Varyam Singh. Years later, Kartar is a farmer, while Ram has received an education from the city. Both are still unaware of their relation, until they meet with Dukhiya, who also informs them that their mother is also alive. Before they could be reunited with her, misunderstandings over who is to marry Ajeet Kaur, the daughter of Varyam, tear the brothers apart - so much so that they not only separate - but also take up arms against each other - both determined to marry Ajeet at any and all costs.

When Laali, who loves Shyamu, refuses to marry Kalidas her siblings, Dhanna, and Bhabhi, Bhagwanti, are asked to leave. When Dhanna is unable to grow anything, he decides to take the assistance of Thakara, the Bhagwan Shri Vishnu.

Sathpura-based Kartar, changes his religion from Hindu to Sikh, enrolls as a rebel to fight the oppressive Mughal rule, goes missing even on his wedding day, and ends up getting married in absentia to Shanno. The rebels liberate Khairabad from the lusty Chaudhry Qutb Din, and form a Panchayat led by Ghafoor Khan and Jamal Din only to face the wrath of Subedar Ali Shah who instructs the Mughal hordes to do away with the Sikh rebels, as well as reinstate Qutb Din.

The story revolves around two friends, one good and the other evil, who cannot be seperated by anyone. That is until the wrongdoing Sohan Lal rapes the wife of his friend Dhaymaya's servant.

Jeeto lives a poor lifestyle in Hasalpur along with her widower dad, Baba Bachnia. When wealthy Ratan Chaudhary falls in love with her, she introduces him to her dad, who approves of him, and arranges their marriage. Shortly before the marriage, Baggad Chaudhary visits them, and gives them the devastating news that Ratan is already married to a woman named Julie Cochinwala.

After the brutal slaying of his truck-driver father, Gurmaan lives a life of near-destitution with his widowed mother. He is even separated from his childhood sweetheart, Pali, as her mother, Sarla, does not approve of him, while his mother wants him to locate his father's killers. After he matures, he becomes wealthy as a singer and earns a lot of money. He then decides to become a truck-driver and try to locate his father's killers.

Harwant Kaur and her husband get cheated out of their land by tyrannical and oppressive Zamindar Sardar Jwala Singh. Her husband leaves, and she has to bring up two sons, Jaswant and Gurdeep, on her own. Years later, hoping to avenge the humiliation, she instead must deal with the fact that Jaswant loves Kulwant Kaur; while Gurdeep has befriended abusive and alcoholic Rathore - who are both Jwala's children.

A Sikh by religion, Chandigarh-based Jaswant Singh, invites his father's wrath when he marries a Christian, Rita, and is asked to leave. Subsequently, he gets into trouble and is held in jail. Rita goes to Ajit Prasad to ask for help, but is instead sexually molested. Afraid to show her face to her husband, she re-locates, and gives birth to Sanjay. Years later Sanjay has grown up, is a post-graduate, and re-locates to Chandigarh to get employment. Rita does not know that her son will soon be beaten by Jaswant for sexually molesting a young Hindu widow, Sandhya, who beats up anyone, including elderly women; and is now on the pay-roll of Ajit.

A newly appointed Assistant Superintendent of Police, Ravinder Singh, questions terrorists' related deaths of his dad, Sarpanch Jaswant Singh; his mother; married sister, Satho Kapoor and her husband, Mitha; look after his new-born son, and wife, Jeeto; as well as deal with the fact that his younger brother, Harjinder, had raped and then killed a village woman, and was shot dead while trying to escape from police custody.

Ranjyot, Amar and their widowed mother flee from Rampur after their friend, Karim, informs them that their village is about to be attacked by Muslim shortly after the 1948 partition of India and Pakistan. The threesome manage to survive and end up in Dharampur in Punjab. They are re-united with Karim when both brothers get married to Jeeto and Satwant. The third time Karim comes in contact with them is when he hears of Ranjyot and his son, Dalbir, go mysteriously missing during the 1983-84 reign of Sardar Bahadur Jorawar Singh, corrupt Indian politicians and police officers, and the move to instigate Sikhs against their Hindu brothers.

Kanwal Singh Sidhu, an unemployed slacker, falls for Ladi Kaur. Their fathers, Professor Kang Singh and Sarpanch Gurtej, disapprove. Kanwal departs to prove himself worthy, while Ladi reluctantly accepts her father's marriage choice.
