- It's the year of 1871 when Damien, a weathered, veteran Texas Ranger is summoned by a band of renegade Apaches to act as bounty hunter on their behalf. The Apaches claim a 'white holy man' has been a curse to them by stirring up hatred against them and has further degraded them by raping one of their young women. Justice is blind, but Damien is not; he has his eyes set on the bounty the Apaches have offered: disclosure to the whereabouts of a hidden Mexican gold stash, which to the Apache way of life is of no value. As down payment the Apaches offer Damien a golden crucifix. Although he is irreligious, Damien has apprehensions about killing a minister, but he ultimately agrees to do it, not being able to turn down the promised bounty. Whenever he rides into town, however, Damien finds two 'white holy men' - a Catholic priest and a Baptist preacher. Damien finds the priest and asks to give a confession. Damien shares his guilt about having no guilt for the many lives he's taken in the 'name and power of the law.' The Texas Ranger secretly wrestles with the question of which of the two ministers to kill. The priest ignorantly gives Damien guidance: 'The lot is cast into the lap, but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord.' Will Damien choose his victim correctly, or is that choice even his to make?
