- To the St. Andrew's Church in Rome comes a fugitive - Cesare Angelotti, former consul, who was sentenced to death for taking a part in a conspiracy against tyranny that rules the country. In further escape helps him his friend, young painter Mario Cavaradossi. A bit later the chief policeman Scarpia reaches the church. He notices the similarity between the portrait of Maria Magdalena, Cavaradossi has been working on, and Rome countess named Attavanti. Scarpia shows these details to Cavaradossi's beloved - singer Tosca, what makes her jealous. Tosca gets to Cavaradossi's house with Scarpia's men. Chief of the police believes he will find the prisoner there, and... seduce Tosca he fell in love long before.
- Story of a doctor, vet, Colonel of the Army (Tognazzi) who starts screaming anarchist and antimilitarist phrases in his sleep; because of his fitful sleep, he must sleep standing up. Now on the threshold of retirement, after a number of denied promotions because his brother is an anarchist, he is transferred to a "teaching hospital" in Florence. When his "frenemy" is promoted to the rank of General, the Colonel decides to write a book about his army career and reveal the many "contradictions" of the army during the war. This document alarms superiors who want to prevent its publication, which would cause serious image damage, so they offer him his desired promotion in exchange for his silence.
- Paolo and Carlo are good friends. The first is introverted, disillusioned and intellectual, while the other one is happy and shallow. Despite their differences, they share accommodation. Paolo runs an "alternative" kind of library with a colleague. Carlo plays the violin in a little band. Their lives go on peacefully until suddenly Paolo falls in love with a customer of his own library - Lili, an amateur actress - whom he decides to take home. Carlo doesn't react well to the fact he's got to share the same space with a third person, so he comes up with a weird idea. He flirts with the new girl and manages to seduce her. Paolo thinks his best friend is now guilty of a real betrayal, while Lili is undecided: she's attracted by both the culture of Paolo and the physical attractiveness of Carlo. This love triangle comes to an end when Paolo tries to commit suicide, Carlo feels remorseful and Lili leaves them both, returning to her previous life and still hoping to find her one true love.
