A longtime family friend of Torbjörn Lindholm, Ziegler had pioneered a breakthrough in the field of applied nanobiology at a young age. The technology radically improved the treatment of life-threatening illnesses and injuries. It was this expertise that attracted the attention of Overwatch.
Because her parents had been taken by war, Ziegler was opposed to the organization's militaristic approach to keeping global peace. Ultimately, she recognized that Overwatch offered her the opportunity to save lives on a much larger scale. As Overwatch's head of medical research, Ziegler sought to leverage her work for healing in frontline crises. The result was the Valkyrie swift-response suit, which Ziegler herself piloted on many Overwatch missions.
Despite her contributions to Overwatch, she was often at odds with her superiors and the organization's overarching aims. Though she lent her brilliant mind to healing her comrades, Ziegler had dire concerns about the affairs of Blackwatch, specifically pertaining to Commander Reyes and his own medical support, Moira O’Deorain. When Overwatch dissolved, Ziegler sought distance from the agency and re-dedicated herself to helping those affected by war, caring for the broken and dispossessed in crisis areas around the world.
Following the Overwatch Recall, two squad mates she had thought to be dead and gone arrived at her doorstep: Jack Morrison and Ana Amari. Ziegler’s feelings on the return of Overwatch were further complicated, seeing Morrison's obsession with chasing vengeance for the agency’s fall from grace. Yet, when Talon forces descended on Cairo, Mercy appeared without fail, to protect the city’s civilians alongside her old teammates.
Although she, Soldier: 76, and Ana Amari have since parted ways, the events in Cairo rekindled a sense of heroism that Ziegler had thought to be long buried. With Null Sector's targeted attack on Paris, it was clear that Overwatch was needed once again to defend the world from threats to peace. Now knowing her battle is not yet over, Mercy has since returned to Overwatch, and can be counted on to don her Valkyrie suit whenever innocents are imperiled.

- ↑ Developer Notes: Mercy's ultimate is one of the most powerful abilities in the game; however, players would often fly into the fray and die while using it. With this update, Resurrect will now take a bit longer to charge, but Mercy will be a lot safer when activating the ability in the middle of combat.
- ↑ Developer comments: Some quality-of-life improvements for Mercy players, as well as overall improvements to Guardian Angel. We think the changes will help her reliability and survivability when she is the middle of a firefight.
- ↑ Developer comments: Players really enjoyed being able to use Guardian Angel on dead allies, and felt it allowed for more clutch plays and interesting movement options during combat. As a result, we’re reverting the change from a previous patch that removed Mercy’s ability to target and travel to dead allies using Guardian Angel.
- ↑ Developer comments: The change we made to Guardian Angel in the February 9 beta patch (allowing the ability to target the souls of dead allies) was intended to help Mercy get to where her Resurrect may be the most needed. In practice, this change caused problems. We saw a lot of feedback from players noting that they’d accidentally target a dead ally when they meant to target a living ally, or that they’d target a dead ally thinking it was a living ally initially. As a result, we’ve reverted the original change.
- ↑ Developer comments: Mercy is a very strong support hero with a very strong Ultimate, so it’s no surprise that many teams consider her mandatory. We don’t want any hero—or any hero ability—to feel like an “auto pick.” Our goal with these changes is to tone down Resurrect by allowing opponents to counter it, but still make sure it can feel game-changing.
