The ruse of connection within suburban domesticity thrown into crisis by your creepy neighbor. I can understand why this isn’t as highly regarded as Kurosawa’s Cure, it is essentially a re-telling of the same story: a police procedural inverted on its head to examine control and interpersonal dynamics within the nuclear family unit. Stunning, one of the best films I’ve watched in a long minute. Sad I hadn’t heard of this earlier, especially with the string of J-horror American remakes that followed in the early 2000’s. Was engrossed with everything about this by the midway point, had to rewatch just a few days after. Kurosawa is clearly a master of drawing out the eerie existential undertones found in our everyday.
